| I finally had a chance to watch this film this weekend. I'd been looking forward to it for quite awhile. I enjoyed it, but I'm really not quite sure what to make of it.
It was great to see Karen Mok on the screen again, I don't know where she's been lately. She plays the role of a nightclub hostess/prostitute whose leg is broken in a car accident. She doesn't have much to run with in this character, but she fleshes her out enough to make her feel human and yet still oddly mysterious.
The settings used in the film are really effective. There are just a few locations that are used repeteadly, and for good reason. The most memorable location was the one with the half-finished bridge in the background. It was amazing to see this huge, eery bridge to nowhere. And it was a good metaphor for the film as well, since it seems to be largely about people who are missing certain puzzle pieces in their lives and can't quite get where they're going until they find them.
As much as I enjoyed watching the film, I was still a little frustrated at the end when things weren't tied up neatly. Maybe that's lame of me, or too "American" of me, but to spend so much time patiently waiting for people to make their intentions clear, and for mysteries to be answered, it felt like a bit of a cheat in the end when things didn't reach a satisfying sense of conclusion. I was still unclear as to the characters' feelings about each other, and their motivations.
However, I'd recommend people give this one a look. In particular it should appeal to fans of Wong Kar-Wai and Jim Jarmusch, it's one of those films with long passages of people just being people and not much else. Sometimes it works splendidly, sometimes not. Your call.
I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this one... |
