Batman(1989) does a good job restoring Batman's dark, gothic, noirish, violent, detective noir roots. Jack Nicholson gave an over the top performance as The Joker. Michael Keaton gave a sincere perfomance as the brooding, depressed Bruce Wayne/Batman. Although, he does channel some "Beetlejuice" when he yells, "YOU WANNA GET NUTS?! LET'S GET NUTS!" at The Joker. The campy Batman TV show from the sixties is fun, but it hurt Batman's image. Batman was followed with Batman Returns in 1992. It was dark and violent, albeit not as focused as the first. Batman had to play "second banana" to Catwoman and The Penguin. Then again, the 90's Batman movies degenerated into camp with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Recent installments such as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight restored that "back in black" tone.
I have Batman on DVD. I wonder what the quality is like on this Bluray disc?
Though I loved the recent Batman movies, this Batman movie stands out as the movie that put comic based adventures on the map! Producers began to take notice and finally started putting together a more polished product. You still had a lot of mistake movies like Steel, Captain America, and the shelved Roger Corman version of the Fantastic Four. However, Batman 1989 reinvigorated comics, and paved the way for some of the better super hero movies on the market today ( Iron Man, Spiderman, Dark Knight, and the eagerly anticipated WATCH MEN )
