 JUST NOT A VERY GOOD MOVIE (330 views)AUTHOR /

I should say not a very good Jackie movie. Jackie's injuries were a problem but even worse was the triplets always ready to say "Jackie help me!" The Hong Kong version was considerably more tolerable.Cinema!

#2 The HK version I thought was good. Fighting, maybe not his best. Entertaining, very. Plus, there were hot chicks :-)YoMama

#3 Yeah, it has serious flaws, but the action is totally fun. Richard Norton is a badass. I stand by this Jackie Film, as well as "The Protector", another one of his films that most people seem to hate. I still say a bad JC flick is better than a good most-people's flick. :)Choco

#4 While the Hong Kong version was indeed better and demonstrated a real plot I just could not say this was an okay movie. The *help me Jackie* stuff gets old quickly. City Hunter was a much better movie when it came to Richard Norton and Jackie's fights. I also am not a fan of either Protector, the one released in the US or the one Jackie took back to HK and added more and better fights. I do not ever want to see a mostly naked Danny Aiello again!!Cinema!

#5 I actually haven't seen the U.S. version of "The Protector", only the HK version. But I've always enjoyed it and "Mr. Nice Guy". Oh well, more Jackie (and naked Aiello) for me. (Blech!) :)Choco

#6 i thought i was the only person who thought this was a bad movie. love Jackie Chan but not in this film. it just didnt work. the elements were there but somehow it just didnt come together. Richard Norton just didnt do it for me as a satifactory bad guy. the film is strangly lifless. ive watched it several time, ususally after someone writes how good it is, and it doesnt get any better. chanfan

#7 No CL52372, you are not the only Jackie fan to think this was a bad movie, but I have received a lot of grief from a few. Some really get extreme and act as though it is some form of betrayal to not like any Jackie movie. The comments here are polite though most folks seem to disagree.I have most of Jackie's movies and there are only a few that are plain not good and a couple are just bad. I have a difficult time explaining exactly what was wrong but much of it came from Richard Norton, who wasn't given much to work with and he can fight. He worked with Sammo for years and has worked with Jackie before including City Hunter. Instead of the big truck there should have been a fight between Norton and Jackie. I don't know what Sammo or Jackie thought but it was a dismal failure IMO. Jackie is amazing but even he has made a few lousy movies but for the most part very good quality. Maybe that's why movies like NG are so hard to take because we know he can do better.Cinema!

#8 Choco #5 DO NOT WATCH THE US VERSION. Okay now you have been warned. It is abysmal. The end fight with.. dang forgot his name but the entire fight scene was re - filmed and comes out much better in the HK version although that isn't saying much, lol. The US version also features about 300 naked women going up a ladder - wait I just remembered the women wear wearing a hairnet kind of thing. It went on and on and on......maybe guys wouldn't mind but geez it's just a tad surprising in a Jackie movie and it went on seemingly forever looped. Jackie also filmed more fight scenes including a couple in a gym. It's still weak in the HK version IMO,but oh so much better than the US version.Do yourself a favor and skip the US version.Cinema!

#9 Yeah, the US version is supposed to suck. But I always liked the HK version. I wonder how many people who "hate" this film are only familiar with the butchered US version...Choco

#10 Choco you ask a very good question. Most movies I saw were sliced, diced and generally destroyed but they were the only ones, hell we didn't know there WAS another version!

I know it has to color the viewer's perception even if they later watch the full version. The only absolute complete versions I have are VHS tapes of the Japanese cuts. Jackie's movies were always intact for the Japanese audience. But the movies were very expensive so I have several. They have footage not even the re - mastered HK DVD's have. They do not have any extras, but just seeing the whole movie is a pretty big extra! It wasn't until I saw the Japanese version of Police Story that I realized that Jackie was a genius! The butchered movies I was used to left huge plot holes and less and shorter fights. An example - my frustration with the women being helpless. In the "real" movie they scream less and are not nearly as helpless. Does the version seen first set the primary opinion?

Cinema!

#11 You're right about Japanese versions. The sad part is that they often cost upwards of $50 and have no English subtitles, either of which is generally a deal-killer for most of our customers (or me, for that matter).

I don't think that the first version seen has to necessarily be the decision maker. I seem to recall several situations where seeing an uncut version after seeing a cut version maybe improved my opinion more than if I had just seen the uncut one first...
