Well, I'm familiar with the true story and I've seen the film in which Elaine Paige plays Sylvia. It's a good film with great performances, but it made me feel so bad I don't think I'll bother with this other version of the same horrible story.
Wow, I didn't realize there had been other film adaptations. But anyway, it sounds like you and I basically had the same feelings about this story: that it's powerful and tragic, but not something that's necessary to revisit any time soon. I'm a bit unclear as to what the point was of making the film, it's simultaneously a cautionary tale of sorts and gross voyeuristic exploitation. Kinda' left me saying "huh?"
I absolutely loved this film, but it made me feel like crap and I would never recommend it to anyone, nor will I likely ever watch it again. I love f***ed up movies like nobody's business, but this one really made my insides hurt.
