The Hand Of Death [1976] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

The Hand of Death (1976) was John Woo's third feature film. Shot in South Korea and in the Golden Harvest Studios, this tale tells the story about the extermination of the Shaolin students. Dorian Tam stars as one student who makes his way across enemy territory to find safe haven and to escourt a scholar (John Woo) along the way as well. One person, a Manchu turncoat (James Tien) and his lieutenant (Sammo Hung) don't want to make his journey pleasent. Dorian is aided on his mission by a lone sword's man and a young warrior (Jackie Chan). Can he make it or will the leegacy of Shaolin be lost forever?

The film was directed by John Woo and the action scenes were directed by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Yuen Wah and Yuen Biao have small roles in this film. The four would later go on to much greater sucess in the late seventies and early eighties. A lot of Woo's trademark scenes debuted in this film. He would perfect a lot of these scenes and reuse them ad nauseum in the future.

Overall it's not as bad as people say it is. You have to take it for what it's worth. Woo is not an action director per say and Hung and Chan were just perfecting their craft.

Recommended for old school kung-fu fans and John Woo followers.

The Time You Need A Friend (product link)
Comedy / Drama

"The Time You Need A Friend" was a remake of the "Sunshine Boys". John Woo's film follows the lives of two aged comedians who haven't spoken to each other in years. They're convinced to perform one more time for a charity event. But there's one huge problem, they can't stand the sight of one another. Can these former friends put aside their differences for one night and give it all until it hurts?

A change of pace for John Woo, this was made during his tour of duty with the folks at Cinema City. He also made a children's film during the same time. After this production he made a film that would change his life forever.

Highly recommended.

The Super Inframan (product link)
Science Fiction / Action/Adventure

This classic production was one of the few attempts that the Shaw Brothers made to go international. They also wanted to capitalize on the children's market and benefit fiancially from the Ultraman film and t.v. series. Although they never made a series of Super Inframan films, it'll always be a part of the Blank Generation's pop culture.

Danny Lee stars as Super Inframan, a science techician who decides to go through with an experiment that'll make him into a super powered human. The experiment is put into full swing when an alien craft is found near the secret laboratory. When the space craft is discovered, an evil entity known as the Dragon Mom threatens the destruction of Earth if it the craft is not given into their hands and the surrender of Earth. Will the Dragon Mom and her co-horts force the people of Earth to cave into her plans or will Super Inframan save the world? Find out!

Money Crazy [1977] (product link)
Comedy / Crime

"Money Crazy" is a humorous delight. Richard Ng stars as a swindler who blackmails rich people. Ricky Hui co-stars as a schmo who works hard and gets trampled by his wealthy employers. His bosses also have bad luck around him. He's a sort of a jinx who never has any luck either. After his latest firing, Ricky and Richard meet each other under bizarre circumstances and decide to team up with one another and pull off a major scam with Ricky's current employer. Can the two do the gig without killing each other in the process?

This film was made during John Woo's comedic period. He was a sort of a Woody Allen type of filmmaker who filmed a lot of slapstick comedies with Ricky Hui as a frequent collaborator. The two meet when he was an art director on the Hui brothers comedy classic "The Private Eyes". The action scenes were director by another Woo collaborator, Hark Fung-On. Lee Hoi Sang (another Woo regular) as a part as a hired goon who dresses up as a Golden Shaolin Warrior! Lam Ching Ying and Dick Wei have small parts as well.

This is a very funny film that has to be seen. One of the highlights of this movie has to be the homage to Rififi (also replayed in Mission Impossible)--in ordered to avoid detection from an elaborate burglar alarm, Richard Ng has to hang upside down with his feet bound from the celling in order to steal a diamond broach!

Classic stuff, highly recommended!
