SPL: Sha Po Lang (product link) Crime / Drama I finally got to see this and I was not disappointed. This dark and brooding action thriller has good characters all shaded in grey. The action is impressive too, and I was certainly not expecting it to end the way it did. Great film. I'm sure I will be watching this again soon...
The Hand Of Death [1976] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Early film to feature the three brothers, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (Although he is hard to spot.), is a very enjoyable old school kung fu adventure. John Woo directs in the days before he became the king of Heroic Bloodshed. Tan Toa Lang is on hand with some great foot work. Love Sammo's teeth too.
New Police Story (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts At last. A Jackie Chan film made in the last ten years with something to recommend it! The story may have a few holes, but we have some nicely choreographed fights, some frantic gunplay and some of the best stunts done by Jackie in a long time. (The bus sequence is a real highlight for me.) Most of the fights may be short and sweet, but they all carry more power than the majority of his Hollywood efforts. My one quibble is that Jackie is trying so hard to play it serious and give it genuine emotion that he spends just a little too much time crying. He plays drunk quite well though. I haven't seen "The Myth" yet, but at least this film gives a little hope for future Chan projects in Hong Kong.
Pedicab Driver (product link) Martial Arts / Comedy One of Sammo Hung's finest films has something for everyone. It mixes comedy with action with a tragic love story thrown in for good measure. Well worth watching for the action alone, this is more than just a film for fight fans.
