During the early nineties, a lot of wire-fu features were produced in HK cinema. Jet Li, as we know, starred in some of the best wire-fu flicks like the "Once Upon A Time In China" films and "Tai Chi Master"! This film is no exception! Jet Li portrays the early life of Chinese folk hero Fong Sai Yuk. Unlike the Shaw Classics starring Alexander Fu Sheng, we get a Fong Sai Yuk full of fun and mischief. The story begins lighthearted but soon turns serious as Fong Sai Yuk and his mother (portrayed by Josephine Siao) discover that Sai Yuk's father is secretly a rebel.
This leads to Jet Li fighting the governor (portrayed by Chiu Man Cheuk) for his father's life in the grand finale. Granted there is a lot of wire-fu, but I loved the comic performances of Jet Li and Josephine Siao. Josephine Siao makes this movie with her comic portrayal as Sai Yuk's kung fu mama! Great movie for wire-fu lovers, comedy lovers, and Jet Li fans! The Dragon Dynasty version does have the original language version, which I recommend!

"Josephine Siao makes this movie with her comic portrayal as Sai Yuk's kung fu mama!" OH YEAH, SHE DID! But I will give this movie 5 because it was well-written flick.
Fong Sai Yuk (product link) Martial Arts / Comedy Not really a serious attempt at telling the real story of Fong Sai Yuk, this is a superior action showcase tacked onto an ordinary comedic script. The tradition is that Fong Sai Yuk was a precociously adept fighter who was firmly devoted to his mother. To this framework, slapstick, wirework and amazing physical abilities are grafted. There is little of the blind rage traditionally ascribed to this wild fighter who fled to Shaolin Temple after committing murder, nor is there any inkling of his eventual tragic death.
Take the superior martial arts choreography by Yuen Kwai and add the tremendous master of wushu, Jet Li, and the result is superior, if lightweight, entertainment.
3 Iron (product link) Drama / Crime This is one of the best modern love stories I have seen in awhile. The movie is unique and the two main characters are utterly brilliant in their silent roles. I absolutely adore this picture and the filmmaking is magnificant. This is a must-have for anyone that wants an original love story or a picture that would make you think about your own personal life.
Iron Monkey [1993] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
"Iron Monkey" is a superb wire-fu flick starring Donnie Yen and Yu Rong Guang. A lot of people call "Iron Monkey" a Chinese Robin Hood, which is a fair assessment, but I also see a comparison with Zorro. That is largely based on Zorro and The Iron Monkey both having a fairly civilized relationship with a police chief that is a kind hearted individual. Another comparison is that both characters came from a noble or respected family.
I'm usually quick to criticize wire-fu choreography, but some of the scenes in "Iron Monkey" were amazing. I still think that some parts were a bit excessive, but the choreography from Yuen Wo Ping, Yuen Cheung Yan, and Yuen Shun Yee was, for the most part, incredible! Donnie Yen was tremendous in his role as Wong Kei-Ying and really showed his great fighting abilities. Even Yu Rong Guang was convincing as the Iron Monkey, handling his duties admirably. Tsang Sze man was also impressive as a young Wong Fei-Hung, especially since the character was played by a girl.
It's a shame that "Iron Monkey" was a box office flop because it is certainly one of the best martial arts films of the 1990's. With that said, "Iron Monkey" has thankfully gone on to receive the respect and admiration that it deserves, even becoming well known in the West.
If one wanted to sample a wire-fu film for the first time, there is no better place to start than "Iron Monkey".
Highly recommended!

I'm real picky about the wire fu that I like but you are totally right about the qualities of this film. It is definitely a wire fu classic with a great cast and crew. I also agree with every response I've seen so far.
Wire fu used tastefully is not a problem: "Iron Monkey" usually stays close to that, and the quality of the performers is extremely high. Yu Rong Guang is eclipsed by Donnie Yen, but is still quite nimble.
Ichi The Killer (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure There are a lot of people who love this movie and a lot of people who hate this movie. I love this movie. It is one of my favorites. People who hate it just call it mere explotation, but I think they just can't get past the violence. A must for Miike fans.

Wow! The people who hated this film sure are "special".
This is a must for Miike fans, a breed of movie fan that insists gore for its own sake is an irrefutable mark of incredible genius. Everyone else will see this for the crap that it undeniably is.
Bow down and show some respect for one of the top ten all time greatest kung fu flicks. Lower. Let me start of by saying that I just really wanted to write a review for this movie but I acknowledge that Jay Lee probably wrote the best review for this movie already. Just giving props to those that are deserving. Now to my insane ramblings of blather that are often misinterpreted and in some cases incomprehensible due to my heavy use of logic and honesty.
This one doubles as not only my favorite Gordon Liu movie but also as my favorite Shaw Brothers movie. I know there are so many to choose from and you think that one is the best and dude over there is all like "what about the '36th Chamber'?" Well, chill, we're talking about my favorites now, not yours. We talk about your favorites in your review, sucka.
Lau Kar Leung crafts this movie and its fight scenes with inspired perfection. Gordon Liu dishes out the goods with the jack-of-all trades fu by demonstrating that old school multiple proficiency that pretty much died in the 90's when everyone could just have a single gimmick and still get by. This movie is not only arguably Gordon Liu's best martial arts performance but also Yasuaki Kurata's as well. You have to wait all the way to the end to see Yasuaki finally get down; but when he does, HOLY SHIT, he's a fuckin' smokin' now! (Maybe, just maybe, there is one "Family Guy" fan out there who got that reference. Probably not.)
Anyhow, this film has got one of the best complilations of variety in martial arts styles and weapons put to use. The Japanese performers and characters are all straight-up bad-asses, and really Japanese, unlike many other Chinese films that used Chinese actors and portrayed the Japanese as bitch-made predatory miscreants. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'. Well, I guess to truly complete a review for this movie I got to give up my favorite fight. Damn, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one favorite I would cheat and say the entire end fight with Gordon and Yasuaki, which is basically like 3-4 fights in one. I don't mean to beat a dying horse (unless it's called for or I'm bored or something), but Mr. Kurata is so frickin' slick it's unreal. The man handles a ninja-to like he was born holding one, and his crab style is one of the dopest, slickest and most creative things I have ever seen. This movie has everything for martial arts lovers including a tough chick.
I also got to say Buddha bless Dragon Dynasty for releasing these perfectly digitally remastered fu classics with the original subtitles and dubbings while including all kinds of sweet bonuses like interviews with the legends that made these movies possible. Make sure this is in your collection. Essential and severely enjoyable.

the ratings and the reviews say it all. a must have for any collector
If HKFLIX had higher star rating, this movie would be up there. The movie is amazing, it had no blood, & no finishing movies but it entertains. Plus it's a great history lesson too.
Shaolin Master Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure this got to be the most over rated film ever, i don't know why people rated so high, it's got very slow and boring action, slow storyline, i felt to sleep half way of the film, i reckon this is gorden liu's worst film, watch the invisible pole fighter instead!

I wish every cop was like Harry Callahan. And Andy Robinson is creepy as fuck!
Escape From New York (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime Oh please. Come on. One of Carpenter's best films. What impresses me most about this film is that it was a low budget film. "Escape's" cinematography is outstanding, with a dilapidated outlook of New York City.
Where the film also succeeds is in characterization. Kurt Russell is THE SHIT! He perfectly portrays the Snake character so f@#$in' perfectly that I might shit with exuberance. I love the Snake character with such a passion that I might consider converting to being gay and having posters of Snake on the wall. Eh, you don't need to read my perversion. Besides, it's personal. The other characters are great, with their hobo-like structure and cyber-punk attire and so forth.
The action is great. The...GODDAMN IT, THIS MOVIE RULES!!!!!! AAAAAARRRGH! THE END! CAN'T REFUTE ME, SUCKAZ!!!!!! :)

I nearly agree with the rating, and will leave the review alone.
I love almost every Capenter movie from Assault On Precint 13 up to and including They Live. But I just don't dig on this one... don't know why. I like Adrienne Barbeau's boobs though!
I agree with everything you and Choco said plus your review is LOL funny. Other great aspects include John Carpenter music, Ox "hairy ass back" Baker as Slag, and Maggie`s hooters.
Submerged (product link) Action/Adventure This movie is best suited to be submerged. Preferably into a deep and swift moving body of water and tied to a rock. No, no, wait that will not do because of contamination in the water. Just send all copies to the EPA-approved landfill.
I confess I wandered around a bit while this was being watched. I also confess I do not like Seagal. He cannot act, his martial arts skills are poor to none, and did I mention he cannot act? This crap was even worse than usual, with all plots and subplots stolen from recent films. Gary Daniels is a much superior fighter, which is why he was on the screen for 53 seconds.
There are many better movies. Hell, there are even better Seagal movies. Just skip this one.
Armor Of God (product link) Action/Adventure / Comedy Pure Jackie Chan fun, a movie that is created for Jackie Chan, propelled by Jackie Chan, directed by Jackie Chan, starring Jackie Chan, and probably catered by Jackie Chan, too. The fun energy of the making of the film really translates through to the finished project. True there isn't a great deal of martial arts until the end, but the end more than makes up for it with over-the-top energy and awesome, bone-crunching fights. Hong Kong's answer to "Indiana Jones", if Indiana Jones was a martial artist.
Armor Of God 2: Operation Condor (product link) Action/Adventure / Comedy As much as I love the first "Armor Of God", I have to admit I like this one a little more. It takes less time to establish itself, the plot is a lot less loopy, with good, simple Nazi buried gold. Jackie goes to get the gold and beats up baddies along the way. With the signature breezy charm that made Jackie Chan a worldwide star, you can't go wrong with him in his element.

High adventure along with some truly very funny scenes! One of Jackie's best ever!
I like Anthony Anderson: occasionally, now, but not in this heap of garbage.
I like Tom Arnold: never, ever, under any circumstances.
Once again, Joel Silver has taken Jet Li's Beijing-style wushu and forced it down the throats of the American public, interspersed with third-rate hip-hop and tenth-rate writing. Jet Li is marvelous to watch, even in trash: this is trash.

I think my review has more effect because of the AIDS comment but yes this garbage but should of been a zero rating.
Danny The Dog (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure First rate English language work from Jet Li. He had to wait for French producers filming in Glasgow. He plays a mentally-stunted physical adept working as an enforcer for a vile loan shark (played by Bob Hoskins), isolated from civilization and adult thought until he is drawn into normal life and forced to fight to protect his new family. The action has a real-world immediacy and practicality I have seen in none of Li's previous work, and the quality of his co-stars is much higher than what he has previously endured in the West.

Horrible, self-indugled piece of butt. Completely boring with an incredulous story. The list goes on.
Fearless [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
He he he he ha ha! Slave strikes again! Apparently he does not care for overhyped kung fu films of today 'cause they are ridiculously ludicrous. Oh sure, you could refute me with this unintelligible comment: "A 2 1/2 rating? But the film had great kung fu action." Great kung fu action does not justify a great film. You know it and I know it. Even a mentally handicapped person knows it. This is just another example as to why kung fu films have sucked and that is due to its self-absorbed art film idiocy and uninteresting story about some moron who learns about humility, narcissism, and hypocrisy throughout his existence due to a precarious personality issue and then becomes a Chinese patriot. God!
Maybe it's me--maybe I just get sick of new movies being cranked out the butthole to only reveal the same old shit. The stories and conceptions for today's kung fu films are soooooo worn out that this could have been an unintentional remake of a movie from the 70's or 80's; but who knows, really. To be perfectly honest, I think you're just looking for any excuse to give films like this any credibility when in truth you are in a state of denial.
The kung fu action was okay. JUST OKAY! I'll always have issues with wirework unless it fits with a film's level of insanity and/or absurdity, like "Tai Chi Master" or "Iron Monkey". But with a film like "Fearless" that's supposed to be consistent and well told (HA!), no wirework is required. It does not work. As far as the movements of the actors go, it feels a bit sloppy, but overall it's...eh, nice.
Probably the main reason why I didn't like this film is because of Jet Li. He is just not a convincing bad-ass. His martial art skills are 99% consummate but his screen presence is just weak. He's just a sissy Mary. The only films I've ever liked with him were "Tai Chi Master", "Fist Of Legend", "Martial Arts Of Shaolin", and for some odd reason "My Father Is A Hero". And perhaps "Once Upon A Time In China" 1-3, only because I like Tsui Hark films.
If you liked this film, fine. I don't care. But in the words of a great reviewer: "Nothing special here." It's just another everyday ordinary kung fu movie. Whoopee-do. Now I await your inflictions with elation.
AND THE ACTING WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!

You know that I couldn't agree more! This garbage was just recycled rerun stuff. I don't understand how so many people can hold this movie in such high regards when it is nothing more than average.
Gotta disagree my friend. Frankly Jet does some of his finest acting here. I agree that we have seen better martial arts action, but I enjoyed this for the good acting performances from Jet and the whole cast!
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Just finished this minute and I felt I had to write this quick ditty on my thoughts on CHOCOLATE. Here it is:
Simply amazing!
It once again gave me the feeling the first time I watched FIST OF LEGEND, ONG BAK, BANLIEUE 13, and all those great instant classic martial arts flicks!
Anybody I mean everybody will love CHOCOLATE. Period.
Jeeja Yanin is a breath of fresh air. A wonder to behold. Poetry in motion. I can't wait for her next action flick.
You have to see CHOCOLATE for yourselves! Jaw dropping stunts, awesome storyline, highly recommended! AAA+++ and 2 thumbs waaaaay the **ck up!!!
I don't get art films and I never will or want to. This film is completely overrated and stupid. Just because this was the first, quote unquote, kung fu film that hit the mainstream portion of American society (or so I heard) does not make it authentic or original.
The story went nowhere as we delve deep into the bowels of a chick called Zhang Ziyi, whose rebellious nature gets her in trouble with a crappy sword. Then she screws some bandit and starts fights. Meanwhile, Chow Yun-Fat is on a never-ending quest to find the Jade Fox and kill her to avenge his master. Yes this is the story and moronic art film lovers cry over this crap.
I've heard there was a saying pertaining to the floating scene with Zhang and Chow: "their bodies are doing what their hearts cannot." What does this mean, exactly? This is exactly why I hate art films. Nothing makes sense. Oh sure, one must figure out the complexity in order to justify its meaning, but the question remains, does one even care? I can only get psychological stuff when come to perplexities. Art is just nonsensical to me and I am an artist. An oxymoron I am and proud of it.
The action is good with Yuen Wo Ping's brilliant choreography, plus the music implemented with each fight scene with drum banging mayhem, but it doesn't save the movie because of its extremely tedious pacing.
COMPLETELY INCOHERENT AND OVERRATED!!!!!! How a film like this can be loved is beyond my comprehension. 2 stars is too kind coming from me because I can't stand art films, but regardless, the film deserves credit for the action and music. The story goes nowhere and the pacing is like turtles having sex.
Big huge thumbs down to your review. Sorry. If you think this story is stupid then I don't know how you tolerate the "stories" of most kung fu films. Someone has to try something different once in awhile.
Took me awhile to finally check out this flick. It was completely worth it.
"Cloverfield" is packed with high energy thrills and unyielding momentum. The story told is very simplistic, but that may add to the classic qualities of this feature. This is the best monster movie that I have seen in years. It even trumps "The Host", which is no small feat. You got a little something for everybody: action, excitement, drama, and humor. I know the whole shaky-cam thing did bother a lot of folks, but honestly I thought it was a very good device for the whole movie as it added to the frantic nature of the film while grounding it in a gritty and realistic manor that almost seems to give the monster that much more credibility.
FINAL SUMMATION: This flick is more fun than you can have with a German shepherd, a hooker, and a whole jar of peanut butter. Go check this one out. Highly entertaining, you won't be let down. Now, I got to bolt. I have to fly a 747 to England in 20 minutes and this whiskey isn't going to drink itself.

4 1/2 stars is a stretch but this is a clever and entertaining film that is worth more than just an assortment of special effects like some other movies
When Cloverfield came out, everybody was so hyped out about it. I saw the picture and it's not that great. I admitt it's a better version of Godzilla US version. This movie is just plain stupid & really bad.
Hold onto your hats, sports fans, and try and keep your knickers dry. We have an excellent treat here for all you film lovers. This is one of those movies that can either make or break your Asian film collection. If you don't own it, stop reading right now and purchase the shit. I'll be here when you get back. Now, for the rest of you folks that still aren't sure, "Battle Royale" is monumental entertainment. It combines a deeply probing psychological survey on the effects of extraordinary stress and survival/primal extincts that manifest under extreme (and shady) circumstances in the under-developed minds of children--as well as the media-frenzied constantly escalating bloodlust. Don't be mistaken, folks, this is a story that could one day take place in our world and possibly during our lifetimes. "Battle Royale" draws from many themes of film, books, and short stories that came before it, but it molds these themes into something that winds up feeling truly original. Raw, graphic violence is mixed with stirring emotion and remarkable performances for maximum effect. While I have not read the book, I have every intention of doing so because this story holds the boldness and potency of the classics of literature such as "I Am Legend" (survival against odds),"1984" (society's dystopian circumstances) or even the "Hagakure" ("The Way of the Samurai is in desperateness...Simply become insane and desperate."-page 45 1983 ed. paperback). The film is powerful on so many levels. I did read the entire 15 volume manga though and that rocks, so you should probably go get that too. Now, understand that you will cringe a few times during your first viewing because the action is so raw and the kids are young; so this may provide slight sensory overload, but you'll get over it. You're a big kid now. This movie was everything that "A Clockwork Orange" tried to be. I personally think that Stanley Kubric failed to capture the emotional content of the book I keep hearing about (never read that book either). While one of my dudes on this site does hold that film in high regard I can't help but feel that it came off as meaningless whereas this film ("Battle Royale") comes off as profound and powerful.
If you don't have it, I would give it my highest recommendation; and if you do have it, you should probably watch it at least once every year to keep good company with a well crafted story. Thanks for the time, campers, I got to peel.

Good review. I can understand that someone wouldn't like this film for its controversial nature and content, but saying it is hyped up and not a well made film is ridiculous
Everyone should see this movie, as a test: Those who like it should be heeded; We need not listen to those who do not. It's great (so...you should heed me...really).
Great review. You definitely nailed some of the better points. I'm still trying to work-up what I want to say in my review. You handled it well. 5 stars, hands down.
Battle Royale is a hyped up movie and it's really not that great, kids killing other kids on a remote island- I guess somebody ripped off Lord of the Flies.
def. agree this is an awesome flick about kids goin wild! And agree with your point on a clockwork orange & kubrick- the novel had a much better narrative than the film. The message of the film is powerful- I love this film.
Battle Royale (product link) Horror / Thriller This movie was...interesting, to say the least. It seems to be a movie of stylistic extremes. For every well-executed gunshot/crossbow hit, etc., there's a terrible blood-knife swipe. Every harrowing, tension-soaked kill scene is immediately followed by a sappy but-I-loved-you-all-along dramafest. While the premise of the Battle Royale tournament is intriguing, the story around it seems tacked on and convoluted. The ending was also highly anticlimactic and really killed the movie for me. Worth a rental for the gore and tension, but you won't be watching it again.

I may of watched this movie more times than any other in history and still enjoy it especially when i'm drunk.
It may be that this film hasn't aged well for certain viewers. But when it came out it was totally revolutionary, and for me that's what it remains. Bummer you didn't enjoy it more. :(
I have to admit I like this movie. It isn't as good, stunning, or visually appealing at the original (Leatherface's first appearance from behind that huge metal door in the original still gives me the chills when I see it), but on its own it isn't half bad. It manages to straddle a line that pretty much every other remake misses: the line between updating the movie and not losing complete touch with what you are remaking in the first place.
The original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" is a cinematic steak, while this is a good fast food hamburger: both satisfy but you can't confuse one for the other. This movie scores points in the gratuitous department: you have lots more chainsaw killings, actually turning it into a chainsaw massacre, buckets more gore, and lots of Jessica Biel running around in a tank top and low rise jeans. It is junk food cinema, no doubt about it, but it never infuriated me in the ways, say, the "Friday The 13th" remake-reboot-reimagining managed to do by sucking all the fun out of the movie.
In the world of remakes, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is king simply because it didn't completely botch the job. I will totally understand how people will not like this movie for its gratuitous nature and simply because it lacks the artistry of the original, but as Platinum Dunes films go, this is about as artistic as they will ever get.

Devil's Backbone (product link) Drama / Horror I didn't know anything about this movie, so I was totally surprised as to how good it is!
It's very well made, and it's somewhat surprising, considering the recent focus on Spanish horror films (e.g. "Rec", "The Orphanage"...), that this didn't receive that much attention! Anyhow, this is very highly recommended.

Zatoichi [2003] (product link) Drama / Swordplay/Sword(s) Most movies really don't require a remake. "Zatoichi" is definitely one of them. The odd computer effects and odd plot detract seriously from the film. There were already 26 fine Zatoichi films starring Shintaro Katsu before this was made. Takeshi Kitano's sequel is good on its own terms and does nothing to erase Shintaro Katsu's work: His 26 films are still there, and this sequel is no outrage.
I don't have a problem with remakes unless they have nothing to say. This is a great example where the filmmakers really DID have something new to say with an established story/character. A fresh and enjoyable re-imagining IMO.
Zatoichi [2003] (product link) Drama / Swordplay/Sword(s) Absolute masterpiece. Beat Takeshi weaves a wonderful satirical tale in a world full of memorable characters all the way down to the workmen who keep time with the soundtrack. The two actors' physicalitis and acting styles are quite different from each other's, but Takeshi Kitano does nothing to detract from Shintaro Katsu's excellent films. This is a good film on its own terms.
I think the two actors have totally different takes on the character. What impressed me about the 2003 film was how creative and original they were with things while still remaining true to the classic character.
CONTROVERSIAL REVIEW WARNING: What I got to say ain't nice. To be fair this review is for the American version of the film as I have not seen the uncut version. I would like to remind you that the exits are on both sides of the aisles. Should any danger above water present itself, the person sitting next to you can be used as a flotation device. Now just relax and enjoy the ride. Please assume crash positions.
I was cheated. I was robbed. Just about any amount of money you paid to see this movie that exceeds four U.S. dollars is a vicious ripoff. Was the fight sequence with the ladder phenomenal? Absolutely. Was that pretty much the only thing worthwhile in this flick? Absolutely. This movie brings shame to the immensely entertaining "Police Story" series by skimping on the fu and fight scenes. Of course there is an underwater fight at the end--meaning slow and lacking the type of dynamic aesthetics we have come to expect from a Jackie film. "First Strike" basically is a meandering, through-the-motions, on auto-pilot Jackie film. Perhaps I was mildly entertained at random throughout, but for the most part I just can't justify giving a movie that I only appreciated for one fight scene more than one and a half stars. Sorry but this is only for strict Jackie completists. I love Jackie just like you folks. That's why this film doesn't do it for me. He's better than that.
Do me a favor: at the next wedding you attend slap a bridesmaid on the ass during the ceremony. If you are questioned on this just tell them you got the idea from a bastard. Enjoy your movies, kids.

Speaking only of the Dimension release, this is correct.
I'm a big JC fan but the American version is a mess, but a 2 star mess for me. Try the uncut version and you'll like this film better, the problem with Dimension film releases of JC movies is the constant cutting of scenes deemed not worthy! Shame!
I saw the American cut in theaters in the late 90's. I finally got to see the original version a few years after and it was worth it. The American Cut works though it's still fun for any Jackie Chan fan.
This Jackie Chan feature has terrific stunts & a nice fight scene thrown in the middle. The action was really impressive. Though it is cheesy, it has the Mr. Chan charm. JC antics are always impressive, he's funny & fun- the film is a blast.
"Police Story 4" has a wild set-up, the movie was good. It had nice stunts, a classic ladder fight, & the under-water fight was clever. The movie was fun, and it still manages to entertain.
Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai (product link) Art / Drama You people need to get aware. There was only one review for this and it sucked. Pay attention, folks, damn. Anyhow, this flick has cult king written all over it. I rarely disagree with the HKFlix evalutation of a movie but they were unreasonably hard on this one. This movie is actually quite brilliant and probably tied with "Throw Down" for best adaption of the samurai code and methodolgy to a contemporary setting in films.
"Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" is evenly distributed entertainment that is filled with great performances from a diverse and talented cast, timeless quotes from the "Hagakure" (the book of the samurai), laugh-out-loud humor and good portions of gunfire. You won't be bored for one minute if you have any kind of an attention span at all. Intelligent, provocative, funny and highly entertaining I would recommend this film to anyone.

I'd rate this slightly lower, but you are basically correct.
JJ is a director you either love or you get put to sleep. I was expecting an action flick, to my first viewing was a disappointment. Once I removed my expectations and gave it more viewings I saw what it was doing. A cameo from RZA to top it off.
This movie tried to hard to explore a character's mind set. The movie didn't not go anywhere, 4 an art picture is was just bland. The movie as a whole was not clear on wht kind of story it wanted 2 tell-therefor the actors we're distracted in their roles
The film does entertain but it's mostly for the people that are into the samurai pictures. I love samurai movies but when they modernize it, I just can't get into that stuff.
The movie was all right, I think the performances were good- I just couldn't get that much involved with it though. The movie is not for everyone, I guess I came with high expectations going in. Tht is 1 mistake tht nobody should do in a pic such as this.
Hey thnks for the comments, your right I only had one review. I thought "Ghost Dog" was an entertaing pic but it's not my taste. The film is well shot but compared to "Throwdown" that was amazing.
i just read the comment you left kungfumaniac and i'm totally with you on that one i think the reviewer in question is fubar if you dont know what that means watch tango and cash.
I agree man. This is Jim Jarmusch's vision of the samurai code, the film is entertaining. Check out Jean-Pierre Melville "Le Samouraï" it's a 1967 hitman film, the guy follows the code too. It's Johnnie To's fave film, & John Woo models his films from it.
Immortal [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Thriller Well I have to admit I was a little reluctant to check out this indie film from the STUNT PEOPLE. If it wasn't for their films "Contour" and "Undercut", I might not have tried this one out.
They've (THE STUNT PEOPLE) done it again, produced a feature film that is fun and entertaining. Co-star Eric Jacobus is a hidden gem, and should be contending for leading man roles in Hollywood soon!
Now, I must say the production values aren't top Hollywood standard, however, this production team is up and coming. The story, dealing with immortality, good and evil, is sometimes hard to follow; however, it's paced good enough to keep you intrigued. But don't forget this film is about the martial arts and the action is top notch and entertaining. Great camerawork and choreography!
IMMORTAL is a fun alternative to mainstream action films and, if graded with a curve, is very enjoyable.
Halloween 3: Season Of The Witch (product link) Horror / Thriller I have never understood the vitriol aimed at this lean, imaginative North American horror classic. After the gore bore "Halloween 2", this was a refreshing change of pace--one which dared to give fans something different. Plus we have Tom Atkins hauling ass through any-town USA, killer masks, and creepy men in suits...
Well, to each their own. Clearly the same mentality who despise this are lapping up "Saw VIII" or whatever base excuse for horror is being churned out across mutiplexes this Winter.

If this were a movie of itself, maybe it would of been nice, but without Mike Meyers, this film sucks. Same way with Friday the 13th part 5. It's stupid and pointless.
I didn't enjoy this film, even pretending that it wasn't part of the "Halloween" series. But the fact that it was made it even more irritating. Subsequent entries in the series have succeeded, though many haven't. This one is just totally irrelevant.
Iron Monkey [1993] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Let's compare the wire-fu era to the steroid era in baseball. There were some great players during the nineties, however their accomplishments will always be tied up in the steroid era. During the very late eighties and early nineties, wire-fu reached a peak birthing the wire-fu era.
"The Iron Monkey" is one of the top wire-fu movies of its time. The special effects were great and the plot was top notch. Yu Rong Guang gives an excellent portrayal as the masked hero Iron Monkey, who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Donnie Yen also gives an excellent performance as Wong Kai Ying, who inexplicably tries to bring the Iron Monkey to justice, but then battles a corrupt government official (traitorous ex-Shaolin monk) by his side.
Last but not least is Tse-Man's portrayal of young Wong Fei Hung. Considering that she is a girl, she gives an outstanding performance. The action is sped up in places, but on the whole this is one of the best wire-fu films for its time period. A must-have for all collectors!

Definately a must-have! Good to hear you trusted my review and checked out Protoge and enjoyed it.
Black Belt (product link) Martial Arts / Drama Great semi-realistic karate choreography. Decent plot. Finale was a little underwhelming; choreography got a little sloppy. If you like Sonny Chiba karate films, you'll probably like this.

I really enjoyed the final fight. It just felt real and gritty and desperate. A masterful blend of physicality and emotionality. 5-stars for me.
The Foot Fist Way (product link) Comedy / Martial Arts A pretty funny parody of martial arts instructors who take themselves way too seriously. I know guys just like Danny McBride's character. The ending is sorta' cliche and it drags a bit in the middle, but there's lots to enjoy here if you like McBride's style.

I think I'm a bigger Danny McBride fan than you, but yep. It's two for one crab legs--at Captain Orlander's!
This is Alfred Hitchcock's first truly Hitchcock film. He made two films before this but this was the first one to set out his signature trademarks: blondes as damsels in distress, fear of the police, and an innocent man out to clear his name.
It is a silent film and I have found it takes a certain type of person to really enjoy a silent film. It is much more of a visual medium rather than a multimedia experience of modern film. "The Lodger" does run a little long for a silent movie, I've found the best silent movies run an hour to an hour twenty, but this one goes the feature length distance at an 108 minutes, which will be a tough row to hoe for many--especially those who've never seen a silent film before. But what it lacks in dialogue and soundtrack it makes up for with amazing visuals and some great trick effects. My favorite scene in the movie is when the lodger is pacing about his room and the floor dissolves to a clear plate of glass so the audience and the people below can watch him pace about.
Not for everyone, but I've found that I can really sink my teeth into a good silent movie, and this is one of the greats.

This is an excellent film. Those put off by silent films are missing something worthwhile.
Hitchcock's forte was visual storytelling. Even after he made the leap to talkies, you can still see his command of the visual medium. You can watch any of his films with the sound off and it still works just fine.
Ip Man (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Two words: My God! The story is so well written that it would have still been good with mediocre fight scenes, but the fight scenes are ridiculously good. Donnie Yen outdid himself on this one. This performance should catapult him to the top, along with the other greats such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li, etc. It's well deserved.
Set in the 1920's China this is a very entertaining movie, don't worry about plot too much just watch and enjoy!
Chin Kar Lok and his father travel to the city to find a better way of life. Chin's father wants him to have a good education but Yu Shu prefers to imagine himself in a fantasy life where he is the good guy saving damsels in distress. Don't worry about the first few scenes it gets a lot better! Enter 'better' known as Kim Won Jin! This man is at the top of the kicking world! And his Scorpion form, as he scuttles across the floor or ground is the best I have ever seen! It's truly a different kind of fighting that's for damn sure! If you haven't guessed by now Kim Won Jin steals the show. His first fight gives you an idea what this guy can do. Those who refuse to watch wire fu do not bother but you are really going to miss one hell of a good time! The laws of physics cannot be changed even by the bad guy. You can't make a movie like this without wires but it doesn't matter! It's great entertainment and not all is wire assisted. Kim Won Jin kicks like no one else and I mean No One!
Yu Shu (Chin Kar Lok) is young and has a temper. Most of his time in high school he is getting into trouble for drawing his hero comics or beaten up by the police chief's son. In a series of coincidences he befriends a lovely young girl in servitude to a nasty guy (the Scorpion's father) who sells women locally and abroad. Unfortunately that leads to his father getting beat up and Yu Shu is looking for some help. He finds a temporary refuge with a group of body builders at their school. Yu Shu is so impressed, especially by the instructor Little John he decides he must become his student. That is one of those nicknames that use the opposite. Little John is anything but little!
Yu Shu, his father and the ex-slave go to stay with an old friend, Lo (Lau Kar Leung) at his noodle shop and Yu Shu makes tentative steps at romancing . It must be remembered that Yu Shu's character is supposed to be high school age and cannot be expected to be super talented since he has never had any training other than in his imagination. Although Yu Shu attends a few lessons with Little John his real training begins as every day work for the restaurant.
Knowing his helper wishes to learn Kung Fu Sifu Lo uses everyday items and tasks to train the impatient Yu Shu.
Things grow worse when Yu Shu's friends maid is sold into a prostitution ring by her mother and Yu Shu and his friend get Little John to help them get her back. The big man versus the thin guy with legs that seem to go in 360 degrees is excellent. The gauche riches of the gangsters is shown well as the two square off and Little John breaks a number of things including a wall. At first Little John is quite the opponent but the villain uses his Scorpion (damn he is good!) and amazing kicking skills. The only hope now is to run away. Yu Shu and Little John make it out but the girls are trapped.
It's obvious Lau Kar Leung did a lot of the choreography and some damned good fighting as well especially his fight with the scorpion. Lau being in his fifties didn't look like he had lost a thing since the hey day of the Shaw Brothers. A truly amazing man. But of course Yu Shu needs to try out his skills against the villain and it takes everything he has been taught plus a form of his own creation, the Eel style.
Chin Kar Lok is at a decided disadvantage. No matter how much he could train or do quality acrobatics there is no getting away from the kicking Master. It's difficult to watch anyone else unless he is tearing their head off at the time. And with Lau in the film it leaves the "hero" in third place. Chin is underrated and does have martial arts skills worthy of being on film. But the star is Kim Won Jin, no one will argue with that!
There is humour added naturally but it does help lighten up the story considering it is built around selling girls/women into slavery and prostitution. But as I said earlier don't worry too much about the plot. It's there to add some comedic filler into what could have been a very dark and depressing film.
Back to the Master of kicking - he needs to make more films! I can't say enough about how astounding he really is, just wish there was more of him. I have seen every kicker anyone could name and none of them are better than Kim Won Jin. I'm familiar with wire work and using tubing. I don't think he is on any wire as the Scorpion. And there are other instances where it certainly looks like pure talent.
My only real complaint is that some scenes were shot in a hand held and the fights too close up in places. The finale fight is too dark, visually. It is supposed to be night but it makes some action difficult to see. But after you watch it a few times, and then a few times more with friends you will get the full effect.
Buy it, it's a keeper. Maybe buy two in case it wears out. : )
A great one to own and share with friends who love awesome kicking. To be honest I think that's really everybody. Some of us just don't talk about it as much.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of the best martial arts film I've seen. Non-stop action and great fighting scenes.
