Silmido (product link) Drama / War "Silmido" is a tremendously well made and exciting film. Modern Korean history is filled with tales of demented, politically motivated military action directed against The South's own citizens. "Silmido" is the story of a group of criminals collected into a military unit. The men are chosen for their ruthlessness and violent nature. They receive insanely brutal "training" from the army, and then the army decides to scrap the mission and slaughter the men. The men respond with a plan of their own.
Lifeline (product link) Drama / Action/Adventure Great early film by Johnnie To, plainly inspired by Ron Howard's "Backdraft", but with the excitement of "Wages Of Fear" thrown in for good measure. The actors were all required to do scenes where they were actually engulfed in flames, and the result is a fabulous film. There is no "gore factor" to this film at all--some traffic accident victims are shown bleeding moderately, but it's in the name of realism, not gore.
The House Of 72 Tenants (product link) Comedy "The House Of 72 Tenants" is presented as an elaborate stage-play in multiple acts. The action centers on the immigrant tenants living in a tenement overseen by the pompous and arrogant couple who own the rundown building. The tenants repeatedly foil the landlords' scheming to get the better of them. The acting is wonderful, and the movie is an enjoyable peek at a Hong Kong long gone.
