The Legend Of The Evil Lake (product link)
Action/Adventure

It's hard to put this movie in any one category, being as how it has elements of just about everything from horror, war, romance, drama, martial arts, and a touch of sci-fi. How a movie like this can be so good is truly amazing. The fighting, from large scale battles to the one-on-one encounters, is done very well. Although there is some flying, it's not done over the top. This movie is truly well done and a must-see for any fan of Asian cinema, wuxia or horror. I deducted points only for the water CGI effects that don't look to good.

But other than that everything in this movie is top notch filmmaking. But be warned it's very sad. so pull your girlfriend close and grab a box of Kleenex, 'cause it's not every day that a movie has enough to satisfy everyone's taste, male or female.

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman [1989] (product link)
Martial Arts / Drama

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. its pacing is near perfect, the story though simple suits the movie just fine, Zatoichi is an incredible fighter when you see the first fight scene in this movie your jaw will drop. I was totally caught off guard by just how cool Zatoichi is he's blind, he's old, he seems out of shape you would never think this man could be so deadly. but when he takes out that cane sword limbs are gonna fly it's a must have for any martial arts fan.

Kung Fu Hustle (product link)
Comedy / Action/Adventure

This movie's strongest point is the humor; it definitely had some very funny moments.

There are a good number of fight scenes and are done well, though I've seen better.

The CGI which is used liberally throughout the movie are a mixed bag. Some scenes are just too fake, and they tend to really go overboard with it. When they made this movie, they must have been big fans of Looney Toons, because many scenes in this movie are straight from the acme vaults. But just when I was gonna turn the movie off something cool would happen and I'd stay to watch it.

So as I said this movie is a mixed bag. You'll either love it or hate it. Don't watch it expecting amazing kung fu action, watch it for a good laugh and you may actually enjoy it.

Seven Swords (product link)
Martial Arts / Swordplay/Sword(s)

First let me start by saying crouching tiger hidden dragon is a terrible movie with terrible acting with one or 2 decent fight scenes the only good in the movie is the cinematography and barely even that, hero was an incredibly slow paced boreing movie that could easily put you to sleep even dureing its fight scenes which were very few and far between with an even dumber premise behind the story, the only good was the cinematography and scenery, house of daggers was the best of the three in terms of story and paceing cinema and though again there were few fight scenes they were done with better style though not as well choreographed as the other movies. Now if you agree with what i said of these movies than read on for my review of seven swords. I never liked tsui hark films i always thought they were poorly written with long drawn out scenes that reward you with quick 5 second mediocre fights filled with gore example of that would be the remake he made of the one armed swordsman an absolutely terrible movie called the blade. So naturally i bought the seven swords with much doubt that i would get anything even remotely satisfying from the man who started it all, my only reason for buying it was to see donnie yeng in action. Sadly we dont see much of donnie doing what he does best in this movie only at the end and by than you are a bit tired from all the plot twist and scenes which are supposed to be moving that turn out to be rather empty and silly like the scene with the stubborn horse "joy lucky".

The fights again are few and far between and again they are not done very well and seem a bit disjointed the fight choreography is not great but not terrible neither its just that they dont have the same energy or intensity that you would find in say a woo ping movie. As you sit there watching it you will be interested as the chracters are introduced and the villian will keep you further interested, and the various plots as well. The story is well written and of course there will be 2 other parts but from what i hear without a decent budget it may not happen this film did not recieve good criticsm when it launched and i can see many reasons why. For one thing tsui should have employed another fight choreographer even ang lee has the ability to make the fights more interesting than tsui, about the only thing tsui is good at is gore all his movies have body dismemberment and this one is no different, and he should probably think about just producing movies like he did for iron monkey which was an exenllent movie until the end of it anyway. So in closeing expect a long story driven movie with plot holes supposedly to be fleshed out with 2 other sequels that may or may not be made, fight scenes that although decent you would have definitely scene better in other movies and donnie yeng unfortunately not being used well, and with little screen time, cool villains that turn out to be cannon fodder for the swordsman, and some very interesting swords. Considering there is little to no great wuxia films as of late house of daggers remains the best one made and seven swords follows close behind.

Arahan (product link)
Action/Adventure / Comedy

This movie could have been good but falls flat on its face. The humor is ok at best with some funny moments. The story about the powers of chi and how this misfit may be the one is ridiculous, and a rip off of the core stories found in "The Matrix", and "Star Wars". 7 masters one of them evil you would expect tons of action, but none ever happen until like after an hour into the movie. By the time the fighting does start you've been so bored out your mind that the fight scenes just don't deliver the punch needed to wake you up. The last fight was good but the girl ruins it with constant spinning around and posing. If you like movies heavy on story, with a story that you've heard before but done way better, and action scenes that are few and far between, and mediocre at best with a touch of decent CGI, then you'd probably like this movie.
