If You Are The One (product link) Romance / Comedy This is a witty, romantic film with dark overtones. But the romance is contemporary and complex, making you wonder how anyone ever gets paired up and married. The main character, turned instant millionaire, now pragmatically seeks a wife. But he gets more than he anticipates when one of his blind dates keeps coming back into his life. When he succumbs to the chase, he finds out that she is darkly troubled by a previous affair and he discovers how much he truly loves her.
Ichi (product link) Martial Arts / Drama I was biased to the previous Zatoichi brought to the U.S. by Quentin Taratino...but this remake of the blind swordsman stands on its own. A couple of the characters seemed a little shallow (bad guys), but there's only so much time in a film and the focus is on Ichi. Well done.
Black Belt (product link) Martial Arts / Drama Beautiful, powerful, and simple. No wonder it won the 2007 Montreal Film Festival. This is real karate...or as close as you could get without heading to the dojo yourself.
Azumi 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A different twist to the character than the first "Azumi". Still a well done movi if you enjoyed the first one. I watched it more for the sword and fight scenes than the drama.
Mongol (product link) Action/Adventure / Drama Very powerful film about precursory events which placed Genghis Khan as ruler. Rich landscapes, incredible love story (non-chick flick type) and outstanding acting by Tadanobu Asano.
Azumi (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is the equivalent of the American comic strip "Elektra". While the acting may be a little weak, the action is awesome and the character depth is sufficient to keep you engaged to the end. If you like karate and sword flicks, you must see.
