This is one old skool classic that should not be left out of any kung fu enthusiast's collection!!!
In my opinion Billy Chong should have been up there with the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. His kung fu ability is amazing and is showcased to perfection at the latter half of this film.
"Super Power" came out around the time of the "Snake In The Eagle's Shadow" / "Drunken Master"-imitated films explosion. This is just one of the better films that came out around this era!
Nothing different here in a typical old skool plot. A shamed Manchu kung fu master on his deathbed requests his students to get revenge on the Chinese masters who defeated him years ago. One by one the masters are found and killed with expert kung fu techniques.
The next master up for a lesson in humilation and death is Billy Chong's father. To prevent the Manchu Horse Fist Clan succeeding, Billy learns and develops the Nature Fist style. This lines up for some great training sequences.
"Super Power" didn't have much of a budget, with most of the interior being shot on outdoor locations. What seperates this film from others that were released around this period is the excellent fight choreography. This is nothing short of pure genius. As mentioned before, Billy is an extrodinary talent. Other Billy Chong films that are highly recommended are: Crystal Fist (AKA Jade Claw), Fistful Of Talons, Kung Fu Zombie and Kung Fu Beyond The Grave. All get the 4.5 stars, thumbs-up approval.
Born To Fight [2004] (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts
If you are hoping to see an "Ong-Bak" or "Tum Yum Goong" martial arts fest, you might be a little disappointed! This film was made purely to showcase Panna Rittikrai's Stunt Team. Yes the stunts are great and well executed. But for me personally I also like to see some top notch martial arts ass kicking!! Dan Chupong makes most of his role with some death defying stunts, especially falling in between 2 moving trucks and being hit repeatedly with burning logs. The downside is he is not in the same league as Tony Jaa. In saying that this film is far better than his next film - "Tabanfire".
The storyline is cheesy and not much plot... Gym school visits a Thai village that gets taken over by a Mad Military General who is bent on causing Nuclear Destruction, which causes a series of rebellion against the unwelcomed Military regime. Thus some pretty cool action sequences. Overall it's not bad, but I was expecting a little more.
If you are looking for a more cool 2k films with action then check out "Sha Po Lang" (AKA "SPL", AKA "Kill Zone"), "Banlieue 13" (AKA "District 13") for top notch action and fight scenes.
One of the greatest action/martial arts flix to come out of Hong Kong from the 80's!! It contains some of the best fight/action scenes from this genre! With Corey Yuen (Yuen Kwai) in the director's chair and also action director alongside Yuen Biao, need I say more??? If you're a fan of this genre with the likes of "Yes, Madam", "In The Line Of Duty", "Tiger Cage" series, then do not miss this gem at your peril.
This is what Hong Kong action cinema is all about. It is also a shame that this type of actioner will never be repeated. Yes, we have recent gems like "SPL", "Flash Point", and the likes of Tony Jaa to carry the action flag going forward, but this for me is the essence of true Hong Kong action.
Pantyhose Hero (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A bizzare plot for a kung fu flick, but if you can get past that... I'm sure all 80's modern martial arts/action enthusiasts will love this flick. Plenty of top notch fight/stunt scenes that only Sammo Hung can produce. Watch this guy at the end of his heyday in action.
