Ip Man (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure 2007 was a great year for martial arts movies. Not only did we get this film but we also got "Black Belt". I've had to rearrange my top five martial arts films to include both of these films. Everything about this film is top notch: acting, story, fight choreography, etc. If you only buy two martial arts films this year, it should be "Ip Man" and "Black Belt".
Black Belt (product link) Martial Arts / Drama One of the best martial arts films of all time. If I had a chose a top five in the martial arts genre, this film would be in it. Many times with martial arts films we sometimes let things like bad acting and bad story get a pass as long as the martial arts on display is great. Tony Jaa films are good examples of this. "Black Belt" is top notch in every aspect. I'd wager that even viewers that aren't into martial arts films would also love this movie.
Enter The Dragon (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I agree with the CityOnFire.com reviewer that gave the film 2 stars on most of his points. The reviewer hit the nail on the head with this film and I don't want to just retread what he already said, but I'll just add a little bit.
Don't get me wrong, I love Bruce Lee. I still believe that to this day nobody has been able to match his presence and ability. Watching documentaries about him and clips are a really great time, but his movies are quite boring as a whole to watch. He has changed the genre and popularized it to western audiences and martial arts fans are truly indebted to him for that. It's just too bad that he died so young, because I believe he would have been a part of much more enjoyable films that stand up even to the best of classic and modern martial arts films.
