Bio: I have been collecting Asian cinema since I was 14. I Have been watching kung fu movies since 1985. I am now 26 and threw the years of buying kung fu movies wherever I could find them I have accumulated over 1000 DVDs in my collection(no exaggeration). I'm not a film critic, but I do know a thing or two about kung fu movies.
Tsui Hark creates a wild and wacky world of warriors, wizardry, and more special effects than you can shake a straightsword at. But is all this eye-popping imagery a case of style over substance? Sadly, yes.
Golden Harvest roped in Hark and a bunch of Hollywood effects guys to create this impressive spectacle of a fantasy flick, boasting a great cast and groundbreaking visuals for HK circa 1983. But somewhere between the flying fairies, fireballs, lightsabre duels, and all the other bells and whistles, the story and the characters got lost.
I mean, the actors are fine, and all do a good job--Yuen Biao, Meng Hoi, Moon Lee, etc.--but I feel that they are kinda' pushed into the background by all the special effects stuff, stifling their otherwise fine performances. And the already complicated story drowns in there as well. I've watched this movie a number of times and still have absolutely no idea what it's about. Sure, it keeps throwing crazy, flashy stuff at you, but it doesn't really go anywhere.
For the international version, a whole new plotline, involving Yuen Biao as a modern day fencing champion who goes into a coma and lands in an alternate reality, was shot and tacked on. The original fantasy stuff, being that reality, was recut, and the whole thing was sold as a slightly different movie. The modern day stuff is pretty fun. And I would like to see that full version some day.
I think the movie is a bit of a letdown in the action department as well. It is certainly competent. But I'm just not a big fan of fantastique wire fu. And the fact that there is so much visual effects stuff going on around it also distracts from the physical stuff.
In the end, I can enjoy this film as more of a curiosity than a fully fledged piece of cinema. To me, this is a good example of the dangers of big effects movies: if you lose the story and the characters, then all you are left with is bright lights and big bangs. And that in itself is not filmmaking.

Good points! I liked this film but the acting does get lost in the special effects.
You totally nailed it. I completely agree that this feels like an empty movie that disregards substance in favor of style. It seems that there are quite a lot of mediocre to bad movies that self sustain completely on hype.
I would love to see the full movie. I felt Biao especially was more tied down by wires than enhancement. The plot is as you said is lost. Too much special effects really hurts in this one.
The film is about inner chaos in which is manifesting outer chaos. Or it's about these warriors trying to subdue some Blood Demon. And can't agree cuz technically this wasn't meant to be a kung fu film but a strict fanasty film.
Shaolin Kung Fu Mystagogue (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This old classic is one of the films with the famous flying guillotine-like weapons. Referred to as "The Bloody Birds", Chang Yi's weapons of death are really the star here.
The production values are definitely on the low end, however the actors more than make up for that. There's the usual convoluted plot, with Shaolin once again at the center. Carter Wong, Chang Yi, Kam Kong, and the lovely Hsu Feng all make this little gem worth repeated viewings.
Showdown At The Cotton Mill (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I am feeling charitable and giving this film 3 stars. The editing was criminally bad, entire conversations were missing, and important chunks of fight scenes! On the plus side, it has Chi Kwan-Chun, playing Hu Huiqian as usual. The fight scenes that aren't totally chopped up are good, with Chi demonstrating his signature Hung Gar five animals to good effect. Nothing new in the plot or acting department, but worth a watch.
Legendary Assassin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure [Spoiler review.] The movie is all right, but I don't like how Wu Jing died. It makes me cry.
Oldboy (product link) Thriller / Action/Adventure A truly chilling and haunting film by director Park Chan-Wook that leaves dark echoes imprinted in the mind.
Choi Min-Sik portrays Oh Dae-Soo, a character that is kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years. Upon being freed by his kidnapper, Oh Dae-Soo is taunted with clues as to the why. Thus begins the journey filled with many disturbing plot twists before reaching the ultimate climax! The plot keeps you guessing, the action is great, and the acting is excellent. This is one cinematic experience that if anything, will stay on your mind long after viewing.
Masked Avengers (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A film about a group of masked avengers running around and raping and killing and stealing for self-preservation.
THE BEST VENOM FILM EVER (except "Five Deadly Venoms")! This film hits the nail on the head with its excellent conception, costuming, story, and kung fu action. I just love any kung fu film where the villains wear masks. It just looks cool.
The kung fu action is dead-on tight and probably the best out of the Venoms series. The final fight is just so eye-popping and amazing than anyone who found it talentless is a dingleberry, flat-out.
Highly recommended if you know what good filming is all about!

Great flick, especially in the weapons department!
One Armed Swordsmen (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A really cool idea executed to perfection by Wang Yu and David Chiang. Throw in a minor performance by the always great Lo Lieh and you have a movie that doesn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

I WANT A WIDESCREEN RELEASE! And I HATE VIDEO ASIA! :)
Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I'm surprised more people haven't seen this, because it's very good! I love when Sammo cuts back on the comedy and tweaks up the action instead. There is some wirework but it doesn't detract from the story. If you can find this, get it. You won't be disappointed.

This was a good movie .I particularly enjoy the desert setting.
A film about a hormonal bitch who hires some black magic wizard to cast a love spell on some construction worker so she can screw him for a longevity.
Oh my, was this film sickly. Well, anyways, yes this film is a bit retarded. The only thing really worth commenting on in this film is the final battle between good wizard and bad wizard. My god. How truly incredulous the special effects are. The lasers are flat-out stupid, along with the background shots with the actors implemented. It is so bad. But I did laugh at it so I found it entertaining.
Other malignant things to expect are blood worms, tits, ass, crappy sex scenes (maybe I should start getting into porn), crappy decay effects, and some bleeding.
I could only recommend this film to insane crackheads or people who are lovers of the absurd. I follow "lovers of the absurd", of course, but this film is the pinnacle of trash cinema. Not recommended to serious film lovers.

not one of my personal favorites from this era but can be a fun film if your brain is feeling kind of warped and demented and dont mind a few boring scenes
Dressed To Fight (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A film about some tool who meets some chick called Ce Ce. Since meeting this chick, constant assassination attempts threaten his very existence. He finds out some White Cloud Clan filled with KKK members is behind this and he must deal with this idiocy for the love of Ce Ce. Warning: not an accurate review, but close enough!!
"Uhs"! There is nothing much to say about "Dressed To Fight". It's a simple Taiwanese low-budgeted wuxia pian film. The good things for me were the fights, which feature mostly sword with some bare-handed kung fu and maybe a few weird weapons. The guys in white robes and masks looked like the KKK, except their heads weren't cones and it was funny. Bad things about the film are the crappy story and slow pacing.
Only recommended to the irrational kung fu/wuxia pian enthusiast.

This film was a victim of some shitty English dubbing.
The Elimination Pursuit (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A film about three constables killing a lot of people from the Devil Clan for different resolutions.
I have a distinct feeling that this film was paying homage to "Lone Wolf And Cub". Or maybe it's a hallucination. Regardless, this is yet another shitty yet entertaining film starring yet another misunderstood talent, Roc Tien. Yes, I find myself infatuated with the worst talents in film history, so take that!
The fights were great. The film sort of has a slight pertinence towards samurai films, but it's pointed mostly at Roc Tien's character and his fighting simulations. Overall it's just your basic wuxia pian action.
Recommended to those who are looking for simple and fun wuxia pian films, and this one delivers in spades. I loved it 'cause it's insane, but honestly it's nothing special.

I am strangely drawn to Roc Tien films . I agree he was a unique talent.
Bloody Fight [1972] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Pretty weak old school chop socky with a tired Chinese school vs. Japanese school story, and below average martial arts.
Most of the fights consist of people randomly swinging their arms, and there is very little diversity among the boxing styles.
The Twins Effect 2 (product link) Science Fiction / Horror I wish more movies were like this one. Beautiful girls, awesome actors, comedy, action, love, good special effects, this one's got it all. Bright costumes, so pretty and lavish.

Wow, 5 stars? Maybe I need to give it another chance , It was so boring I turned it off after the first 30 mins. and haven't looked back .
New Police Story (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Most people have compared this to the previous "Police Story" movies and have found it lacking in one way or another. I found this to be a very good action/police drama.
Jackie Chan and the supporting cast did a fine job in this story of failure and redemption for an arrogant police inspector, portrayed by Jackie Chan.
The film was entertaining and emotional. It was probably the most dramatic role for Jackie since "Crime Story". Again, this is a police drama and not a martial arts film. If you view this with that in mind, you will probably enjoy it for what it is. However, I am a little biased as a Jackie Chan fan and a police officer.
Recommended for drama fans!

The worst thing one can do approaching "New Police Story" is to expect it to be a continuation of the earlier series - in characters, plot or genre. It doesn't try to achieve the same ends: What it does, it does very well.
Sukiyaki Western Django (product link) Action/Adventure / Western Just a bit too grim for me. A nice idea, though. At times a Spaghetti Western in Japanese, but never a Western.

Your being too nice 3 stars . Lets be honest this movie sucked.
OH MY GOD! This is one of the best kung fu films ever made...
This film is not only a kung fu film but also a slasher horror film at that. In this movie there is this chick who gets raped constantly, and every time she gets raped, the rapists are stalked by a creature elusive from the screen, making ambient screeching sounds then killing the rapists vehemently. Then it is revealed that the chick is the killer, but subconsciously, 'cause she transforms into a mutant mantis and she can't control the beast within her. She appears in full mantis attire near the end of the flick. It's silly but it works very well and is quite entertaining I MIGHT ADD!!!!
The kung fu action is actually quite good; a mixture of weapons, hand-to-hand, and some bizarre crap like the porcupine character with spikes on his back of the She-Mantis.
This film will not please everyone. I mean maybe the concept of a mutant mantis will not please those who take their (kung fu) films more seriously. This film will only please cult, b-movie, exploitation film lovers in general.
So, if you like a lot of rape, a mutant she-mantis, good kung-fu action, and a somewhat consistent story this film will interest thee. Not recommended to serious film lovers.
Also Shek Tien is in this as a lead villain and he plays a serious role (gasp!). More insanity for this film.

This is the only movie I could stand to see Dean Shek for more than 5 minutes! Strange film but in a good way!
Oh Philip, how could you? Well, he could, and he did...many times over. One cheap-ass, mindless, uninspired Filipino flick after another. And this one is no exception.
It really pains me that the once mighty Philip Ko Fei, a name that to me use to meant quality, chose this path for himself. I also feel bad for poor Yukari Oshima, who he dragged through more B-movie schlock than I care to remember. And I doubt this would have happened had the two not been an item at this time. But I guess "the Osh" was just standing by her man, and I admire that.
This movie is as about as cheap as it gets. Well, maybe not, but it's pretty damn cheap. Philip, Yukari, and Sharon Kwok are the only known actors in the entire movie. The rest (including the male lead) are just Filipino no-names who look like they just stepped on the set in whatever clothes they were wearing, and whose sole motivation seems to be the paycheck at the end of the day. Forget the story, forget the characters. At this point, Philip had just stopped caring, so you don't have to either.
But at least the action delivers, right? Wrong! Yukari was one of the best female screen fighters of all time, and I love that little snaggletoothed Japanese tomboy to death. But not even she could save this clunker. There are odd moments of halfway-decent choreo. But for the most part, it is just a messy mix of awkward, acrobatic gunplay, retarded use of slo-mo, poorly edited fight scenes, and wonky wirework. What a waste.
But the silver lining here is the final showdown, which is pretty damn awesome! Actually, no, it's not, I'm lying. It's just more of the same crap, set to the theme from "The Terminator" and complete with a blatant rip-off of the car jousting battle from "Bullet In The Head". And they couldn't even get that right.
To sum up, this movie is piss poor, and a complete and utter waste of time. I wouldn't even recommend this for Yukari completists, 'cause this would be a shitstain on any movie collection; and I will in fact go and throw out my copy right now.

It was so bad I couldn't even bring myself to watch the second film. I watched the first 10 min. and had to end the torture.
The story is about Ricky, who is subjugated for punching a guy's head in (literally) over an incident that affected the life of Ricky's girlfriend. Ricky, with supreme kung fu, now must survive within a very corrupt prison system with five malignant gangster leaders, the warden who can metamorphose into a silly monster, his gluttonous fat son and also help the inferior prisoners.
The reason why this is one of my all time favorite films is because it portrays what I like in cinema: a film that acts serious but doesn't take itself seriously at the same time--an example being that the film's story is very dramatic but the action is overdone in terms of sarcasm, asininity and over-the-top gore. The fact that someone can punch a hole in someone else's body is downright funny and entertaining. And the fact that some of the FX are evidently facecious give it its prime enjoyment. The gore level in this film is at "Dead Alive's" level. Nam Nai Choi, one of my all time favorite directors, could have been the next Herschell Gordon Lewis or Lucio Fulci, but unfortuantely his film carrer ended with the all so entertaining film THE CAT which was made after RICKY.
Gore film fans will like it, but people who are infatuated with anything relevant towards Hollywood and big budget films will hate it, as well as people who prefer films to be fast-paced, because this film sort of lacks pacing. But then again who cares? BEST FILM EVER!!

The movie is just a hell of a lot of fun - probably for the reasons you cite.
Definitely agree with you "The Story of Ricky" is a cult classic that has high replay value, and could be enjoyed by non martial arts fans. Great date movie ... for me anyway ?
Fatal Needles vs. Fatal Fists (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Excellent movie. I loved the story and the plot to this movie. Great fight scenes. This movie was action-packed from the beginning to the end. I watched it a second time back to back. Very good movie.
Killer Clans (product link) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Martial Arts Buy this movie and you won't be disappointed. You will watch it over and over again. Lots of suspense and mystery, plus better-than-good fight scenes from known stars.
