Another Public Enemy (product link)
Drama / Crime

This is the sequel to the successful 2002 South Korean film Public Enemy. In this movie actor Kyung-gu Sol returns to his role as prosecutor Chul-jung Kang -- a man who’s bent on putting a corrupt public official (Jun-ho Jeong) in jail. The prosecutor's memory of the public official goes as far back as high school, where it was apparent that he'd get out of punishment due to his rich and powerful father.

I haven't seen the first film in years, but I remember it being darker and more involving than this movie. Although, it does prove to be an interesting watch for the 2 + hour running time, it does drag on at times, leaving the viewer to wonder when it's gonna get to the point already. I say this because for almost the whole two-hour time-span all we really get is the prosecutor trying his hardest to put the man in jail, despite his seemingly flawless record. Of course the movie is filled with clichés and predictability.

Regardless, I enjoyed it. It had a decent script, good actors, and a lot of interesting elements. Had they trimmed it down 30-or-so-minutes then maybe things would have seemed less time-wasting.

A Night To Dismember [1983] (product link)
Horror / Thriller

A woman is released from a mental institution only to be terrorized by her attention-jealous siblings when she returns home.

COMMENTS
Its been a long time since I last gave a movie a 1-rating [out of 10], but A Night to Dismember certainly deserves it. With its horrible editing, script, directing, acting, and even dubbing, exploitation director Doris Wishman surely exceeds herself when it comes to making crappy films. Born in 1920 Doris Wishman didn't hit the film scene until the 60s with cheesy nudies and eventually exploitation flicks. Though, by the time Dismember was released the exploitation scene went more mainstream, leading this mess without proper distribution. Doris has been considered the "queen of exploitation" and the "female Ed Wood", but when it all comes down to it, unless you're big on incoherent storytelling, a lot of shots of people's feet, and dubbing not far off from an 80's Kung-Fu film, you're going to hate this dung pile. According to Doris, someone destroyed some negatives of the film, leaving her to make use of what was left, which would explain the 69-minute run-time and the re-use of certain scenes (like running up the stairs!). Either way, I'm sure what was destroyed probably wouldn't have been much better than what's presented.

So the "story" (written by Doris Wishman's niece -- probably when she was 12-years-old) follows a young woman named Vicki (porn star Samantha Fox) as she's released from a institution after murdering a couple people. Hoping that the trip home and time-spent with the family will do her good, Vicki is instead subjected to various scares by her siblings in hopes of making her crazy again and get sent back to the institution. Things take a turn for the worst when people start turning up dead, and naturally Vicki is to blame, but is she really the killer? Honestly, who really cares? This movie sucks. I know by the time the killer was revealed I thought back to that hilarious picture of child-actor Gary Coleman shruggin his shoulders with the words "who gives a shit?" above him. This movie is bad for many reasons -- namely the horrible editing, which may or may not have been due to the missing footage. Not only do we get some of the same scenes used-over, but a lot of annoying and nauseating fast-paced close-up shots of various people or objects.

Also, not only do we have to sit through an annoying narration by the detective character in the film (who sounds kinda like the narration guy from A Christmas Story), but all the actors had to dub their own voices. In fact, only 5% of the film is actual dialogue, and most of the time we'd hear someone talking while seeing the back of their head or a shot of their feet or some other inanimate object. Oh, it doesn't stop there! We also get to listen to old-school elevator-type music in the most inane scenes, leaving the audience to wonder whether they should laugh at the girl running away from the knife-wielding maniac while happy elevator-music is playing in the background, or to cower under the covers because knives are oh-so horrifying! A couple of the most comedic scenes in this film have to be one instance where someone's head is crushed and instead of hearing the appropriate sound effect, we get someone doing a squish-type sound with their mouth; classic! The second instance is a scene where instead of using slow motion, we get the actors actually mimicking slow motion as one of them gets stabbed with an axe; pure gold!

Now we're to expect that with exploitation there is at least some decent gore. It does have a fair amount, I'll give it that, but given its no-budget we witness some of the worst in make-up effects, like when one person gets their fingers chopped off, we clearly see them simply making a fist while hot-dog-lookin' "fingers" are spread over red paint. On the DVD cover it says something about the film having one of the most "entertaining commentary tracks ever" and I have to agree that the constant jabbering back-and-forth by Doris and cinematographer Chuck Smith is hilarious! It reminded me of one of those movies where the whole family gathers together around a Thanksgiving meal and we get the bitter grandma snappin' at the youngins for making too much noise.

OVERALL
The perfect example of everything that could possibly be wrong in a movie. As I stated above, if you like incoherent storytelling, a lot of shots of people's feet, and dubbing not far off from an 80's Kung-Fu film then feel free to subject yourself to this crap.

Burial Ground: The Nights Of Terror [Uncut] [Italian Shock] (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Group of people get invited to a scottish mansion only to be eatin' by the dead.

COMMENTS
Man, what the hell was going on in that film. I see these people going at on the grass behind some mansion and the next thing you know it the dead start to rise outta no where. What I don't get is why they are rising and why so many dead people are buried in the garden.

Anyway, the lameass film starts out with a group of people who are invited to spend the night at some scottish mansion, which is occupied by someone known as "the professor" and a few of the workers there. There's a lot of mindless sex in the beginning then the dead start walking around and attacking everyone. The zombie effects were very crappy. They all looked the same and they all looked like they were burnt to hell. They looked like friggin' burnt toast.

The plot makes no real sense at all. There's no explanation as to why they got invited to the mansion and why no one really seems to ask questions. The acting was horrible and they added this twisted incest sub-plot in the story between the mother and son, which also didn't make any sense or had a point to it.

There was an interesting nipple bitting scene though. Which brings me to the gore. I guess there was a lot of gore, but it was the same old stuff over and over again. The zombies attack someone, then the next scene shows them eating the person's guts. It was done at least 3 times in this film. They could have at least come up with someone more original than that. The guts looked real though, I wouldn't be surprised if they came from a pig or something.

The directing was pretty crappy and the lighting was even worse. I could barely see what the hell was going on through half the film. It was all mainly in the dark. I was incredibly bored with the film and all the zombie action that was going on. Normally I like to see a horror flick with loads of zombies, but the zombies were obviously guys in burnt up masks and it just didn't do much for me.

One thing that seperates these zombies from other ones you might see in other horror films is that these zombies used weapons and their skulls would crack like eggs. I thought that was kinda funny. There's nothing suspenseful, mysterious, or scary about this film. It's just a lame Night of the Living Dead wannabe. The only thing I liked about this movie was the ending. That was decent, but the rest of the film was just crap.

OVERALL
Another pointless zombie flick from the 80s. Don't bother with this film. It's just nudity and dumbass zombies, with a little incest thrown in.

The Chilling (product link)
Horror / Thriller

I didn't really know much about this movie before seeing it except for the fact that it had zombies in it, so I figured I'd check it out. I'm glad I got this film for free, because I would have been pissed had I paid to rent it. It looked like it would be decent at first, but then the low-budget and dumb plot came in.

It's basically about this cryogenic lab that has many frozen customers already inside little capsules. One night during a power-outage and while it's raining two security guards decide to bring the capsules out in the open. As expected, they get struck by lightening and then become the undead, which end up looking more like green space aliens than anything. The movie started off like it would be serious - talking about how cryogenics is being worked on and how the movie would depict what could happen if it went wrong - but then after watching the terrible acting and viewing the unrealistic gunfight shared between bank robbers and cops, I realized that it was gonna be pretty bad.

It was funny to watch how after someone got shot by a shotgun we'd see what looked like a ketchup stain on their t-shirt, which I guess I would assume to be their wound. I figured since Linda Blair was in the movie that it would be decent, but she didn't have a very big role and most of what she did was run and hide. Not only was the story bad, but the also the character development. It was obvious that the makers of the film just wanted to make a zombie film and they just threw a bunch of crap together to make it seem like it really had a plot.

Despite all that, I enjoyed watching the "undead" go about killing people in the lab, but it seemed like whatever they did, they just couldn't escape their limited budget and the actor’s horrible performances. I also thought the ending was just stupid. It reminded me of those romantic-teen comedies from the 80s, where they would put a picture of the character at the end of the film and showed a caption below saying what they went on to do or become. It was just too damn silly to be used in a horror film. Bah! I would have given the movie a lower-rating, but it was interesting in parts and it wasn't as bad as other horror films that I have seen.

OVERALL: A wasted zombie movie, if you'd even call it that. The zombies in this film were basically just green space aliens with glowing eyes, in my opinion. Don't bother with this.

The Laughing Dead (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
A group goes on a trip to an archeological dig and end up with the living dead.

COMMENTS
With a title like "the Laughing Dead" one would assume that the movie wouldn't be good and that's exactly right. The movie sucked.

Starts off with a priest setting up a trip to an archeological dig and somehow a bunch of strangers join. They go to mexico for the dig and once they get there a bunch of weird stuff happens. The priest ends up getting possessed by some "god of death" or something and kills off some of the people in the trip. They are all then locked in a small motel with the guy.

I guess the director wanted to save the best for last or something, but towards the end of the film the people end up playing some kind of basketball game with the zombies . They really don't play bad in my opinion, but that's besides the point. The movie is very badly written and has many plot-holes.

We get to see the zombies later on in the film, but they are nothing special. They look really dumb and we don't get to see them much anyway. I don't know why this movie was even called "Laughing Dead". I expected a lot of laughing zombies or something when I first heard it.

The only thing I liked about this was the fact that it had a decent amount of cheesy gore and was fun to laugh at sometimes. I have no idea if this was meant to be somewhat of a comedy too, but most of the movie was funny. I guess I was just laughing at the plot and the acting.

Would have given the movie a lower-rating, but I liked some of the gore.

OVERALL
Hardly even a zombie film. The movie has a really silly plot and lots of the scenes are quite laughable. Don't bother checkin' this.

Doll From Hell (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT: A girl gets killed by a bunch of strangers only to be resurrected as a doll.

REVIEW: Ikenie or Sacrifice, as it is called when translated to English, reminded me of the many slasher films to come out of the 80s, because the beginning of the movie took place in the woods and there was lots of sex, which is common in 80s slashers. What drew me into the film was reading about the girl coming back as a doll. I like those movies where it's a doll killer or something, and that's why I wanted to check this film out. I was very disappointed.

I knew I wasn't going to expect much from this movie, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. The acting was horrible and so was the plot. The death scenes were dull and there was way too much sex and nudity than the movie needed. It all just became pointless. The doll that the girl came back was a life-size doll that looked somewhat creepy, but that didn’t help anything, considering there's nothing scary or tense about this film at all.

I'm still left confused as to what really happened in the movie, because there were many plot-holes. I've seen many Japanese horror flicks and they all pretty much have a lot of originality and good acting, but this movie has neither. The only reason why I gave the movie a 2-rating instead of a 1 was, because it was interesting in some scenes and it isn't a crappy film to me, but it is a bad one. I was hoping to see some kind of twist or something at the end of the movie, but instead I got some dumbass scene of the doll getting emotional and walking away and I'm left thinking, this better not be the damn ending or I'm gonna be pissed. Bah to that!

OVERALL: A Japanese horror film that doesn't offer the creepiness and original story-line that many others have. I'm sure you've never heard of this movie other than today, so lets just pretend you never read this review, because the movie sucks.

Splatter University (product link)
Horror / Mystery

A killer stalks the grounds of an iny league university.

COMMENTS
This is yet another relatively unknown slasher film that blended itself into the 80's mold. Bringing nothing original to the table, Splatter University faded into the shadows of the slasher decade, never to be heard from again. That is until it got a recent re-release on DVD. The movie pretty much plays out like any other movie -- a killer is loose around the campus and no one knows who it is. The only difference is we deal more with our leads investigator and searching for clues rather than following a group of young punks as they get picked off one by one. With no gore and little blood, the movie has no actual redeeming qualities except for the many unintentionally funny scenes. The story revolves around an Ivy League campus that gets a string of murders after a patient from a local asylum escapes. Deaths occur on and off campus, leading a young student to take it upon herself to investigate. The fast-paced killings in the beginning are notable, but sadly, that and some decent deaths are the only thing worth mentioning. Despite the incredible predictability and unoriginality, the movie still fairs off being a typical slasher -- nothing more; nothing less.

OVERALL
This is your typical 80's slasher that bares the average clichés and predictable that you've seen a dozen times before. Not recommended.

Route 666 (product link)
Action/Adventure / Thriller

PLOT
US Marshals go out to the desert to pick up a witness who ran from the mob. They eventually have to go through the infamous Route 666 and end up finding trouble.

COMMENTS
This film doesn't come out 'till around Halloween, but I somehow got my hands on a screener copy. I had high hopes for this film, but was eventually let down with the end result. I thought the premise sounded rather cool, but whoever did the scripting did a very poor job at it, because the plot had many holes in it.

This movie had a lot of potential, but with poor scripting, it just fell apart. It had some interesting action scenes, but nothing spectacular. The marshals are really lousy shots. Anyway, the story behind Route 666 is just silly. In the film they said there was this massacre of four criminals on the road and whoever goes to the road and bleeds on it or something the four undead criminals return to feast on their blood. I think that just sounds silly.

In one scene, star Lou Diamond, gets in an accident and meets up with some indian chief, who had nothing to do with the plot what-so-ever. He only said a few "guiding" words to Lou and sent him on his way. That was just pointless.

The undead criminals looked pretty cool and there were a lot of fimilar faces in this film. It's sad to see so many somewhat famous actors in such a poor film. Oh well.

Would have given the film a lower rating, but it did have some interesting moments and a litle to make things go a little faster. I guess I was expecting too much from it and was just let down.

OVERALL
A film with potential, but had many plot-holes and a silly script. Nothing special, not really recommended.

Zombie Holocaust (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
A mad scientists, who lives on an island with cannibals, brings the dead to life with his experiments.

COMMENTS
Didn't know much about this film before seeing it, but judging from the pics on the back of the DVD cover it looked really gory. The funny thing is this movie has like 9 other titles. It's like they kept changing their mind on what they wanted to call it.

Anyway, the story is about a whacked out scientist who lives on this small island that is inhabited by cannibals. He does some weird experiements which bring the dead back to life. An expeditiong goes to the island and not-long-after they are hunted down by the crazy cannibals and zombies.

The look of the zombies were okay. They are better than some zombies I've seen in other films, but it isn't anything to brag about. Some of them look pretty funny. Like most films, you don't get to see the zombies until towards the end of the movie.

The best thing I liked about this movie would have to be the gore. A movie about cannibals and zombies would HAVE to have a lot of gore. The directing was okay and the acting was sucky in parts. Would have given the movie a lower-rating, but I liked all the gore and excess nudity. Other than that it's nothing too special.

OVERALL
Not a very good zombie film, but a good movie to watch if you're looking for a lot of gore. The zombies looked funny and most of it was really just about the cannibals on the island. Check this if you want gore.

Devilman (product link)
Action/Adventure / Fantasy

Based on the anime series about a half-man-half-devil, whom fights for good against demons on earth.

COMMENTS
This is the live-action version of the Devilman OVA (original video anime) and manga series in Japan. The manga dates back to the early 70's, which also spawned a year-long animated series. It wasn't until the late 80's and early 90's that we saw a rebirth of the series in OVA form. It also spawned a Devillady spinoff in '98. I've seen the two early OVAs and the Devillady series, but I don't believe I've seen the short OVA that came out in 2000, nor have I desired to see the original 70s' series. I can't say that I'm a fan of the anime, but I did find it quite interesting. When I heard they were making a live-action version I was curious to see how it'd turn out. Though, when I first viewed the trailer I questioned whether it was even live-action since most of the footage shown was jam-packed with computer effects. Now having viewed the film I have to say that they should have spent more time on the script, because it's a mess.

The film combines many elements from the OVAs that I've seen, and even hinting at a Devillady, although we don't actually see her. The story basically follows a skinny dweeb who becomes a half-demon or "Devilman" after the accidental release of some sort of supernatural force within the Antarctic. This virus somehow spreads throughout the rest of the world, turning normal people into demonic beings and causing amok among society. Now it's up to the Devilman to attempt to put a stop to the madness. The movie has a lot of small sub-plots, like how normal people become paranoid of others when they show sign of something different. This eventually leads to unruly mobs and vigilantism. The government also creates a place to quarantine supposed "demons". All of this is shown, but never fully explored or explained, but then there are a lot of things in this film that were never explained.

The biggest problem I have with the movie aside from the numerous plot-holes would be the hacky acting by the leads, who just happen to be teen pop-idols in Japan. Actually, most of the lead cast are either teen idols or models. Speaking of bad cast-choices, who do we get as an American newscaster but six-foot-five-inch, 250+ lb former NFL player-turned-actor Bob Sapp, whom you may have seen in films like Elektra and The Longest Yard remake. This film really tested his acting abilities by forcing him to use more than the usual "looking tough and mean" form of acting, like when it was called for him to look scared, he made sure to move his eyes around a lot and say "oh my god" a couple times. Why most of Japan would even broadcast an American news station is beyond me, but I guess that was the only way director Hiroyuki Nasu was able to show how the virus spread through the globe, and very poorly so.

The story is just plain cluttered and loaded with scenes that don't make sense. Like for one instance when the lead Fudo (Hisato Izaki) and his love interest go to a church (while demons are still popping up over the world) only to talk about how they want to spend their futures together. What the hell? How does that benefit the story? Then in the end we're treated to a final showdown between the Devilman and his best friend, whom also got special powers the same time Fudo (Devilman) did. I have to admit by this point I dozed off a couple times, but from what I saw it looked like a great cinematic from a newly-released PS2 game. Good work on the CGI guys (sarcasm). I have to admit that even though the movie had a lot of problems, I still liked the plot of demons popping up over the world and causing society as we know it turn upside down, and eventually leading to the end of the world. After everything's said and done, the flick fails; leaving fans of the anime rolling their eyes; appalled by this live-action addition to series.

OVERALL
After the long wait I had to endure after its release in Japan back in October of '04, I am severely disappointed. Not only was the story a huge mess, but the acting and leads were horrible. Casting a former NFL player as a news reporter? What a waste. See this flick if you like video game cinematics, because that's what it feels like you're watching when witnessing all the lame computer effects.

Acacia (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT:
A couple adopts a boy, but after having a child of their own, the boy becomes uneasy and even murderous.

COMMENTS:
Ah, where should I begin? Well, I wasn't sure what exactly to expect from the movie since I couldn't find much info on it, but I generally had an idea that I'd end up with mixed feelings. Well I was semi-right. The movie ended up just being a complete and predictable bore. It's a sad thing, coming from the same director of Whispering Corridors, which I thought was a fairly decent ghost flick. The movie started out interesting, but immediately goes into bore-mode until the last 20-or-so minutes of the film.

The story is basically about a couple that decides to adopt a young boy after failing to have a child of their own. They pick out a seemingly nice boy that they discover is a bit of a trouble-maker. A year passes and the couple discovers that the wife's pregnant. Fast-forward another year and the baby is out and about, which obviously displeases the troubled boy. After noticing a loss of attention and failed attempts of killing the child, the boy runs away from home and never seen again. This creates a downward spiral for the couple, as they start to care less and less about things, and eventually go mad, and lash out on each other.

So what the hell does the title mean? Well Acacia is apparently the tree that's in the back yard of the couple's home. When the adopted boy first moves in, the wise grandfather tells the story of rare tree and how it can grant wishes, but sadly the tree has no leaves and seems almost dead. That is of course until the boy disappears, and the tree somehow springs to life, and hell ensues soon after. The first 25 minutes of the movie is somewhat interesting with the family adjusting to their life with the boy, and gets even more interesting when the new child is born. Then after the boy runs away, it just consists of the couple slowly going crazy. That is until towards the end when the "scary" truth is revealed about what really happened. The twist at the end of the film came as no surprise to me, since I had a hunch as to what happened to the boy earlier in the film.

While watching the movie I was thinking we'd see some cool ghostly occurences happening to the couple, but we get nothing more than few images here and there and maybe an interesting death by ants. The movie really doesn't turn horror until towards the end. The rest of it is just a drama of sorts. Normally I don't mind movies that have the story and actors performances leading it, but this movie was just too damn boring. The story essentially leads nowhere, and just consisted of a lot of long and drawn-out dialogue. No scares, predictable ending, too much talking. What a waste. So why just a 5-rating? Well it had its moments here and there, and despite it being boring, it was well directed.

OVERALL:
A boring South Korean "horror" flick. Too much talking, with an incredibly slow pace. Don't bother.

The Majorettes (product link)
Horror / Thriller

Someone's killing the young members of local cheerleading squad.

COMMENTS
Based on the novel by Night of the Living Dead '68 co-writer John Russo, The Majorettes is an interesting, but failed attempt, at changing the usual 80's slasher fare. Originally Effects artist Tom Savini was going to work on this film, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, so instead they got a newbie named Jerry Gergely to work on the effects for the kills. This explains why all we see are lame slashes to the throat by the same-old bowie knife. Had Savini not dropped out then maybe it would have been a better movie, but regardless, the film still proves to be slightly different compared to the usual 80's slasher half-way through when more details are revealed.

So the story is your typical one about some masked killer going about killing off the local cheerleading squad. The finger is pointed at a number of the stereotypical people, like the weird pervy maintenance man and the disgruntled and prone-to-violent-outbursts ex-boyfriend. Sadly, when the killer is revealed it fails to be remotely shocking since anyone who’s watched the genre long enough would have known within the first 10-minutes. Although, it is around the time that the killer is revealed that the story takes an interesting turn, making it stand-out among the rest of the slashers sub-genre. Greed and revenge is played out through the last 30-or-so minutes, stepping the story-line and action up a notch, when a boyfriend decides to take matters in his own hands and goes through his father's gun collection.

OVERALL
The flick starts off as an incredibly dull 80's slasher, but half-way through takes an interesting turn into greed and revenge, making it stand-out among the standard 80's slasher. A decent rent, but don't expect a lot.

Hitcher In The Dark (product link)
Horror / Thriller

A young man goes around abducting women in his rich daddy's camper.

COMMENTS
Italian director Umberto Lenzi has made dozens of horror films from cheesy gore flicks to slow-paced giallos, and I (not particular a fan of his work) still haven't found one movie of his that I actually like. Hitcher in the Dark, although is an interesting change from his usual work, proves to be no different. The story follows a spoiled young rich boy, who likes to circle the roads of Virginia Beach in hopes of picking up a female hitchhiker in his daddy's camper. Instead of dropping them off at their desired location, he takes them to the woods, where he kidnaps, tortures, sexually assaults, and eventually murders them. All thanks to his sick desires towards his deceased mother. He eventually meets a young girl who has a striking resemblance to his mother, and decides to keep her around longer than the others, even cutting and dying her hair to look more like her. Aside from avoiding the police, the man has to take care of the girl's troublesome boyfriend, who takes it upon himself to search for her after she goes missing.

Most of the movie is just a confusing slow-paced little game between the young man and the girl. There are a lot of incredibly long and drawn-out scenes that would have been better off on the cutting room floor, but instead we're subjected to witnessing such boredom. Luckily, that's why the fast-forward button was created. Not all of the film is boring, however -- there are some scenes that were fairly interesting when it seemed like the young man was going to be caught. Sadly, all the scenes within the camper were way too long, and that's where most of the movie seemed to take place.

OVERALL
Fans of Umberto Lenzi will probably be disappointed since it's a change from his usual cheese, while others may just not like the movie because it's just too damn slow. Either way, avoid.

Before director Mike Newell brought us films like Donnie Brasco and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he mostly worked on made-for-TV movies, until he stepped up in the early 80's and started making feature films, this little horror movie being one of them. I never thought I'd see Charlton Heston's name before a horror movie, but after seeing the movie, I can see why. This is probably the first time I watched a mummy movie with no mummy! Throughout the film there's talk about the resurrection of the mummified Egyptian queen, but when the time finally came (the last 5-minutes) all we see is a possessed chick with a smirk on her face! What a waste of time.

The story follows a work-a-holic archeologist, whose bent on being first to discover the tomb of a mummified Egyptian queen. The time finally comes around the same time his wife is about to give birth. Naturally his work comes before his family, so while his wife is busy giving birth, he's busy dusting sand off an old tomb. Sadly, the baby is DOA... that is, until the tomb is finally opened, then the baby miraculously returns to life, but is it really a miracle or a curse? We learn 18-years-later when the daughter is all grown up and decides to visit her archeologist father that the spirit of the queen is within the young woman and plans of her resurrection through a ritual is underway.

I was expecting to watch a nice little underrated mummy movie, but instead I get Heston freakin' out over things as usual and a whole lot of slow-pacing and dialogue. The only redeeming quality the film offers is it's above-average kills, which I have to admit were pretty cool. Had it not been for the kills I probably would have kept the DVD player on fast-forward until the last 10-minutes. I suppose those who are interested in a mummy movie with more story than-mummy, then maybe this will be up their ally. I for-one was not impressed.

OVERALL
As far as mummy movies go this is a stinker -- we don't even get an actual mummy! Instead we're treated to a lot of mysterious (but cool) deaths. Check it if you're lookin' for more story-than-action when it comes to your mummy movie fix.

The Ring Virus (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
The korean remake of the first RING film.

COMMENTS
Okay, a lot of people didn't know there was a remake of the first RING film already, but like I said up top, this is the Korean remake of the original Japanese film. Looks like the Koreans beat us Americans to remaking the film, but does it really hold up to the original? I don't think so.

I thought this film was trying too hard to be creepy. The first 30 minutes just seems to go by really fast. All the events in the original RING kind of happened slow, but in this film everything seemed a bit rushed. In this remake they changed the story around a bit. I think that's where they went wrong. Sure it's good not for a remake not to be exactly like the original, but when you mess with an innovative story like the original RING has, you're just gonna end up screwing everything up.

In this movie the characters are changed around a bit. They changed the story behind the cursed tape as well. I just didn't get into this movie. Everytime I watched it I would reach the point of just passing out, because it was just boring. The acting wasn't bad, but the directing needed a lot more work.

The ending was a huge dissapointment. In the original RING, the ending was the best and creepiest part, but in this remake it was just lame. I didn't find it creepy at all. Like I said before, they were just trying way too hard to live up to the original.

I would have given the film a lower-rating, but it did have its interesting moments. It's not exactly a BAD film anyway. It's okay on its own, but as a remake, it just doesn't live up.

I'd like to see how we remake the film. I'm sure it'll be better than what the Koreans did with it. Hopefully they wont load it all up with computer generated images or anything. I dont know when the US remake is coming out, but I'm guessing maybe 2003 or so.

OVERALL
A rather disappointing remake. They tried too hard to make it live up to the original and failed.

Mother's Day [Uncut - w/Bonus Disc] (product link)
Horror / Comedy

PLOT
Three girls go on a camping trip in the woods, but gets more than they bargained for when they meet up with a mother and her two twisted boys.

COMMENTS
Even though I haven't seen the movie I Spit On Your Grave, I know what the plot is about and apparently these two movies are very similar. From what I know from the I Spit movie is a woman gets raped a few times by a bunch of hicks in the country and gets left for dead. She then gets revenge on the guys and kills them very brutaly.

In this movie three women go on a camping trip in the woods and get captured by two siblings and their mother. They are then brought to an old house in the woods where they torture and rap one of the women while the others watch.

I don't want to give too much away, but eventually the women escape and get revenge on the siblings and their mother. When I rented the movie it said it had "Extreme Violence" on the cover. I can sorta see why they would say that since a guy gets his head chopped off and another gets an axe to the nutts, but there wasn't as much violence as I had expected.

The effects were a little cheap, but I expected that since it was a cheap 80s horror flick, I mean what more can you expect from the 80s? Anyway, the acting was good in some parts, but could have been better. The mother wasn't as twisted as I wanted her to be, which kinda dissapointed me. There werent any good scares in the film either.

What I liked most about the film though was the ending because they bring in a totally different character and it kinda leaves a question mark. The reason why I gave this movie a five was because I thought it was an "okay" film where it's not good and also not bad.

OVERALL
So, basically overall rent this movie if you've seen I Spit On Your Grave just to compare the two films. The rape scene in this movie isn't very graphic so if your a lady, don't worry about being desguisted.

Brainslasher (product link)
Horror / Science Fiction

PLOT
In a post-apocalyptic world people are seperated from those who lurk underground and those living in the main-land that spend all their time hooked up through virtual reality.

COMMENTS
I was sent this film a while back and the title didn't ring a bell, but the actors, Bruce Campbell and Angus Scrimm did. I didn't know they were in it and I figured since they were that it would be good. Well, I guess not even cool actors can save a movie, because I found it to be rather bland. Some people may also know this movie as Mindwarp.

The movie started out weird showing a girl and her mother hooked up to this computer system that feeds virtual reality images into their brain. The girl gets fed up and wants to do something different. The main guy behind the virtual reality gives her, her wish to be set free into the real world and she finds out that the world has turned into a wasteland because of the war.

This movie is basically a ripoff of the Omega Man and Road Warrior. The only thing I really liked about this movie was Bruce Campbell's character. He was the "road warrior" type of character; surviving in the wasteland alone fighting off deformed canabalistic human beings.

We don't get to see Angus Scrimm's character until later on in the film. He turns out to be the main bad guy. Cool to see the two horror icons in the movie. You all may remember Angus as the TALL MAN from the Phantasm films. You can expect to see the duo in Phantasm 5.

Well anyway, the movie had a good amount of blood and gore. The effects were cheesy but affective. My complaint is the lack of originality and the fact that it seemed like they could have done so much more for the plot. Would have given a lower-rating, but I liked the beginning and Bruce's character to consider this an "okay" movie.

OVERALL
Sweet to see two horror icons in one movie. Just too bad the story-line wasn't good enough. Good amount of gore, but not enough action. Check this if you're a fan of Bruce or you got nothing else to see. You might find it other it's Mindwarp title.

The Record (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
A group of high school students pull a prank on a fellow classmate and end up killing him. Now they have to cover it up.

COMMENTS
When I first read about this movie I thought it was gonna be supernatural, like the dead student's ghost or something haunts them. I mean, you'd get the impression from the plot and the cover of the movie that, but I was actually way off. The damn movie turned out to basically be a Korean remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer. 10 minutes into the movie I realized that and boy was I pissed. I watched it all anyway.

The movie is interesting, but it's all aready been done so many times in the US, so I was bored in parts, because it was just the same thing we've all already seen. I was amazed by the close similarities it holds to I Know. The teens kill the classmate on accident so they tell each other that no one will know and they try to cover it up. Apparently a year goes by and for some reason they start dying off one by one by a mysterious masked killer with an oversized red raincoat. Sound fimilar?

The movie had its moments and that's why I figured I'd give it a 5-rating [out of 10]. It's not THAT bad of a film, but the lack of originality really hits it hard here. The acting was okay and so was the directing. I thought it had some cool music though. Had a nice mixture of slight techno here and there. Wasn't too bad. I think that's one of the only things I really enjoyed while watching this movie.

The death scenes were nothing special. No good scares either. Maybe an occasional pop-up. Oh well. I'll make sure to do more research before purchasing a movie next time.

OVERALL
Pretty much a korean remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Had its moments, but wasn't anything special. Don't bother with this.

The Horror Game Movie (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Group of friends are hunted down my one of their old friends who supposedly committed suicide.

COMMENTS
Read a little about this film before actually deciding to purchase it and from what I read it seemed like it would be a good movie. Too bad I still don't exactly know what the plot is even after viewing the movie. All I gather from what I saw was some crazy ghost-chick dressed in black was chasing around a group of friends ends up killing them one by one.

The main cause of all the confusion for me was the fact that it had so many plot-holes. It would be showing one thing then something else would come up, which would just confuse my ass. I thought I had it figured out towards the end of the movie then all this other crap happened..

The good points about the movie was it did have a few cool scenes and effects. One scene I liked was when a guy was viewing a film he recorded with his video camera and while he was checking the LCD screen a hand comes out and reaches for him. I liked the effects for that scene. The ghost chick in this film reminded me of the one in Ring.

When it comes to scares this movie really doesn't have any. It has some interesting or somewhat creepy scenes, but nothing really too good. The acting and directing was okay.

Main flaw in this film is the plot-holes and that's why I figured I'd give it a 5-rating [out of 10]. It had a lot of cool scenes, but it wasn't enough to make it a good movie. If it had a better story and a good twist ending then I'd give it a 7-rating [out of 10] or something, but it just didn't have what it could have had.

OVERALL
A confusing Korean supernatural horror film. Nothing really scary. A few memorable scenes because of the neat special effects, but nothing else. A really confusing plot. Nothing special here.

Freeze Me (product link)
Thriller / Horror

PLOT
A woman gets raped by three men. Years later she has regained her life until the men return for more.

COMMENTS
I heard a lot of mixed reviews on this, but I decided to give it a try since some people said it was somewhat similar to I Spit On Your Grave. It ended up being decent at best, but I was hoping for more, especially towards the end.

It's basically about this girl that is raped and videotaped by three men. They let her go and she goes on with her life and never speaks of the incident to anyone. Years later her life is going good until the three men return to make a new video, but this time she wont just walk away.

I thought the story wasn't very original, but it had potential of being good. I thought the concept of her freezing the men's dead bodies so they dont rot was interesting. There's not much for gore or anything that would make you cringe your teeth to. It's a predictable film, but it kept my interest and I found the directing and acting to be pretty decent, which is why I decided on a 5-rating.

Just a small little known fact that the woman in the film is a famous Japanese nude model.

OVERALL
A decent movie, but I expected more. Unoriginal plot, but it had potential of being good. Check this if you're a fan of Asian films, but don't expect too much.

Evil Dead Trap (product link)
Horror

PLOT
A reporter her some of her crew go into an old military base to check into a case only to be killed off by a mysterious killer.

COMMENTS
I never really heard about this movie until it was mentioned somewhere on my board and then I was kindly offered a chance to view it. I didn't expect much from it and so I wasn't surprised that I didn't like it as much as I could have. Don't let the name fool you; it has nothing to do with the Evil Dead trilogy. This is a japanese horror film with english subtitles.

This is a very strange movie. A lot of scenes just didn't make sense and I think that's why I gave it a 5-rating. It just had too many plot holes and just got silly towards the end. First you think it's a slasher film, but then all of a sudden it turns supernatural on you. I think the movie has an identity crisis where it doesn't know if it's a slasher of a supernatural flick. It's good to mix the two sometimes, but I dont think it felt too well in this movie, because it just made things confusing.

What I did like about the movie was the death scenes. They were very innovative and painful looking. Gotta love that. As for gore, it had a moderate amount, except at the end when things really got weird.

The acting was okay and so was the directing. There weren't any real scary scenes, which dissapointed me. I've seen a lot of creepy japanese horror films and I was hoping this would be one of them. I guess not.

Red Eye (product link)
Horror / Thriller

Let's not get this confused with Wes Craven's latest theatrical effort starring Cillian Murphy. This is South Korea's latest stab at the ghost sub-genre, only this time the ghosts are set on a mysterious train, which is sadly the only remotely original thing in this film. Director Dong-bin Kim returns to the genre after his failed South Korean remake of "Ringu" in '99 entitled "The Ring Virus". Using the same old scare tactics we've seen time and time again, we follow a young stewardess as she takes a new nightshift job on an old train, that's on its last run. Strange things begin to happen as we come to realize that this train is inhabited by the ghosts of the passengers who died many years prior while on the same route. I admit that the film does succeed to entertain, as I thought a ghost-train theme was rather interesting, but since the scares we're given aren't anything we haven't already seen, it fails when it comes to being scary or creepy for that matter.

The movie also has an unusual amount of silly coincidences that tie into the film's plot, leading to a number of "twists" into the storyline; although it's not too hard to predict ahead of time. The film could have used its train setting more to its advantage, capitalizing on its claustrophobic setting and the use of a pitch black night drop. I could think of a number of ways it could have been scary, but director Dong-bin Kim decided to go towards the more mainstream, and clichéd way around things. The film does have its moments though, with the interesting twist of past and present, and some use of lighting in the train, adding little to a wannabe creepy atmosphere. Either way, with all its predictability and clichés aside, it's a mediocre watch for fans of Korean horror.

OVERALL:
This is yet another clichéd ghost-effort from South Korea. Although it manages to entertain, it fails in the scares department. If you're not stranger to Asian horror, then you'll probably find yourself rolling your eyes more than hiding under the covers with this one.

Battle Royale 2 (product link)
Horror / Thriller

The first "Battle Royale" is easily one of my favorite films, because of its originality and message about violence in society. When I heard word of a sequel being made, I was overjoyed; and after reading the plot about the survivor from the first film attempting to take over, I had high hopes. Sadly, after seeing the movie I wasn't impressed, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It's far from being anywhere as good as the first movie, but it does tackle some interesting issues, and at least it wasn't just a rehash of the original. The story is about a new group of students that are thrown into the new BR2 act, which was set up to take care of Shuya Nanahara, who was the survivor of the first BR, and who is now a known terrorist. The movie starts off with some huge buildings in Japan being blown to the ground, which is an eerie reminder of September 11th. Then it shows a clip of Nanahara and the "Wild 7" talking about how they declare war on the government and "all adults." This is where the guys behind the first BR act decide to start a new act and throw in some more students to take care of Nanahara instead of using their own men.

The students are taken and thrown into an area where a white line is drawn in the middle and they are given a choice whether to participate in this war against the "Wild 7" or not. The catch is if they refuse, they die, so it's not really much of a choice. Around this time we see those pesky collars again, but naturally the rules are different since it's a new act. This time the students must travel in pairs and are given 72 hours to successfully kill Nanahara. If one of the pairs die, the other dies; if they don't kill Nanahara within' the desired time, they all die. They are also given "danger zones" much like the first movie, so that they keep moving to their goal. Nanahara and his group of terrorists are all reportedly held up in a remote island, so the students from the new act are sent there to take him out. This is where the film begins to resemble "Saving Private Ryan" a bit, with all the gunfire, gritty images, and shaky camera shots. Sending students to take care of the job obviously wasn't a good idea, considering a good portion of them die within minutes of the attack on the island. Eventually we see Nanahara after the remaining students meet up and join forces with him, which I thought was a predictable, but interesting twist. When Nanahara's first introduced to the students he goes on a rant about war and how he even found happiness in a country thats been in war for 20-or-so years, I.E. Afghanistan.

The United States was discreetly referred to as "that country" when talks of war was going on. It was obvious who they were attempting to put the blame to without actually saying anything. There are lots of flaws in this movie and it maybe due in part that original director Kinji Fukasaku sadly died in the first days of filming and his son Kenta Fukasaku had to take over. It seemed as though a lot of the characters in the movie were put there just to be killed off and more blood be shown on screen, because a lot of the students had little-to-no character development, unlike the first film where almost all the students had their own personality. An interesting plot-twist in this movie is that the daughter of the original BR-teacher, played by Takeshi Kitano, is in this film and actually joins the BR2 act in order to exact revenge against Nanahara, who killed her father in the first movie. Sadly that key plot-point isn't really fully played out, because after half of the film we are thrown in a plot where it's everyone against the guys behind the new act. On a plus side the movie does have some good battle scenes and it's fair share of blood. I also liked some of the new characters we were introduced to. Sadly the chick that survived with Nanahara at the end of the first BR isn't even mentioned in the movie until towards the end of the flick.

I'm not quite sure how to react to Riki Takeuchi's performance to replace Takashi Kitano as the teacher in charge of the operation. His performance seemed way too over-the-top and over-dramatic to the point of being silly at times. On a plus-side, Takashi Kitano had a cameo in a flashback that his daughter has, and the smiling girl from the opening scene from the first BR has a small role in this film. Cameos are always cool in my opinion. In the end I decided on a 7 [out of 10] rating, because I enjoyed the movie, but not as much as the original. It has many faults, but it was good to see some BR action going on again--but sadly a lot of that was drowned out with sappy sympathetic moments and rants from Nanahara. Damn him! I loved the ending to the first BR, but I really didn't like how this one ended. It seemed like the message that they were struggle to get across throughout the movie was all for nothing. Bah. Be sure to look out for the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ripoff towards the end.

OVERALL:
A sad disappointment compared to the original. It has interesting elements, but they are shadowed with plot-holes and over-dramatic and silly-sympathetic scenes. There's good action, but it fails to have the same brutality or impact as the first did. See this if you're a big fan of the first movie, but don't get your hopes up like I did.

My Wife Is A Gangster 3 (product link)
Action/Adventure / Girls With Guns

I caught this flick earlier after anticipating it since the ending of the second film. Sadly, there's no Zhang Ziyi or any of the old cast members from the previous films. Instead, we follow a totally new story involving Shu Qi as the daughter of a triad boss, who's forced to leave Hong Kong after she causes trouble with another gang. She goes to South Korea, where her mother is, and bunks with some henchmen from a Korean gang. Expect a lot of mis-translations and antics from the goofy henchmen, which is the majority of the film.

The comedy is actually pretty funny for the most part, which is good since the flick doesn't offer much as far as action goes. There's a little in the beginning, and in the middle of the film. The end has the biggest chunk of the action. This is definitely the weakest of the trilogy, but it's still an entertaining movie.

If you haven't seen any of the films, I'd recommend at least checking the first for the comedy and action; and if you like it, check out the sequel, which brings back most of the characters from the first. Avoid the third unless you just want to see a Korean comedy.

Thriller / Ghost

PLOT
A girl sees ghosts so she is sent to see a psychologist to prove that it's all in her head.

COMMENTS
I didn't really know much about this film except that it was another one of those supernatural asian films. The plot kind of reminded me of The Eye so I figured I'd check it out...

The plot is about a girl who sees ghosts. She ends up visiting a psychologist about it and he proves that it's all in her head and in the process falls in love with her. After she is cured the psychologist himself begins seeing these ghosts.

The movie was interesting, but it really didn't have any good scary or creepy parts compared to The Eye or Ringu. I did like the plot a bit, because it starts off pretty unoriginal but once more is revealed it starts to get a lot more interesting. The twist towards the end was a little predictable, but good. I didn't really like the ghosts in this film. They looked a little funny and not as scary as the ones I've seen in other films.

The main ghost towards the end made unusual door-creaking noises whenever it moved its joints, which I thought was quite odd and sometimes funny. The directing and acting wasn't bad. It had good atmosphere at times. I would have given it a lower-rating, but it wasn't a bad film it just needs more work with script. If you're looking for something more in terms of tension and scares see the films I mentioned above.

OVERALL
A decent HK film. Interesting, but not as scary or as good as other Asian films I've seen. Check this if you're a fan of any Asian horror, but not recommended.

The Ghost [2005] (product link)
Horror / Thriller

An amnesiac college student discovers that her forgotten past is slowly coming to her as she begins to realize that those she associated with in High School are now winding up dead.

COMMENTS
This is another one of South Koreas attempt at a horror film that just so happens to be very similar to the Japanese Ringu (no surprise!), down to the ridiculously-long-hair-covering-half-the-body-and-face-only-leaving-one-weird-looking- eye-to-scare-the-audience technique. The movie is just oozing with originality! (Obvious sarcasm). Though, even with the lack of anything new I did find the flick to be rather interesting and I thought the ending was the only thing that saved it from getting a lower rating. The climax that reveals the truth behind all the weird stuff that has been going on (although it is somewhat confusing) is probably the best part of the movie.

The story for this flick revolves around a young female college student who has recovered from a serious accident, which led her to have amnesia. As she attempts to put her past together and get her current life straightened out, she slowly comes to realize that those she associated with in high school are now turning up dead and all are keyed to water. Hmmm, weird. As fragments of her memories and the people she knew come together, she experiences weird visions of a girl drowning and what she thinks is a ghost following her around. Could there be a connection?

If you put two of Japanese director Hideo Nakata's films Ringu, and Dark Water, and a little bit of Memento Mori together you've got yourself Dead Friend. The movie is seriously lacking in originality (like stated above), but somehow makes it up towards the end? Although the movie isn't spectacular, I did enjoy the "twist" and I honestly didn't really see it coming as I'm usually able to do. If you're experienced with Asian horror cinema already you won’t find the same-old scares effective enough to scare you, much like it hasn't for me and other veterans of the genre.

OVERALL
The same-old thing we've seen done before. The only thing I liked about the movie was the interesting and somewhat unpredictable ending. Only worth a check if you've got extra money to blow and if you're really into Asian horror.

The Clown (product link)
Action/Adventure / Crime

Based on the German TV-series with the same name, The Clown is the big-budgeted feature film, which doesn't shy away from your stereotypical action flick and paper-thin plot-line. In fact, they try to take it up a notch by adding a gratuitous amount of explosions. I've never seen the series, but from what I've gathered, the film and series aren't much different from each other. Either way, this film was made for action junkies; or more-like junkies who like a bunch of big explosions, inconsistency, and a horrible screenplay. Oh, and a chick with fish lips (she obviously wasn't thinking clearly when she told the surgeon to fill her lips).

The film basically follows a man who was once a criminal named "The Clown" because he wore a clown mask while pulling heists. Now years after a colleague killed his woman during a routine heist, he's the local mall security, whose seemingly leading a fairly simple life. That is until his old group resurfaces to pull another big heist involving tons of gold. This calls for the "clown" to make his triumphant return.

Despite all the negative, the movie is an interesting and sometimes entertaining no-brainer, but only if you look past many of its faults, most importantly the lacking character development. I suppose it might be wise to watch the series before viewing this, but for those of us who haven't seen it, all we get are brief flashback sequences.

Horror / Thriller

A group of teens pull a prank on their nerdy teacher and get more than they bargained for.

COMMENTS
Whether I've actually seen this movie before or not will forever remain a mystery to me, but while watching it I kept thinking I've seen it before. That happens when you've watched way too many horror movies over the years. Anyway, this is the DVD-release of one of the last slasher flicks to come out of the 80's and it's actually not a bad one either. It doesn't use the same basic formula that we're used to seeing -- you know the one where the teens go camp somewhere or "party" in a a far-out and empty location only to get killed off by some shadowy or masked killer and in the end discover it's one of them that's killing everyone. Nope, this movie is a little different and that's what makes it unique and interesting.

In this movie we follow a group of teen friends -- the "tough" no-rules guy, the nice guy, the overweight doofus, and of course, the slut -- as they attempt to pull a prank on their nerdy female teacher. There's a local legend in the town of a couple killings that occurred in a swamp in the outskirts of town and so they decide to get some of the mud from that area and throw it on the windows of the teacher's home in attempt to scare the hell outta her. Little do they know that the teacher had something to do with the murders when she was a child and the prank only causes her to snap and take matters in her own hands.

I liked this flick -- it's a little slow in the middle, but I liked how the plot wasn't the same old routine, so it kept my interest. Of course most of the deaths don't occur until towards the end, but if you can sit through the movie without being bored then you'll get a decent pay off towards the end when the teacher gets her revenge on the whack students. If you look passed the plot-holes and slow pick-up of action sequences, then you'll probably dig the flick like I did. If you get the DVD you'll get to check a nice intro from critic Joe Bob Briggs, whom adds a little trivia and background on the film -- cool stuff.

OVERALL
A decent little slasher that breaks the mold of the typical theme we're all used to seeing from the 80's. Worth a check if you can sit through the story, but don't expect a lot of deaths or gore.

Shut Up! (product link)
Comedy / Crime

International stars Gérard Depardieu and Jean Reno star together in a French film called Tais-toi!, which roughly translates to Shut Up! for us English speakers. In this movie Jean Reno plays "Ruby" a man who's sent to prison after attempting to make off with a gangster's money (who just stole it from someone else) only to be busted by the cops. In the same prison Gérard Depardieu's character "Quentin" is a troublesome slow-witted man who never shuts up; ultimately leading his cell-mate to attempt to kill him, but Quentin has a gift to somehow always win a fight. The duo eventually shares a cell together, and with Quentin constantly talking, and Jean Reno's character never speaking, they make the perfect duo! In no time the two escape from the low-security prison and not only have the cops on their ass, but the gangsters who are after Ruby.

This is a very light-hearted movie that tries really hard to be funny, but sadly, it fails. Sure, it does have some funny moments, but overall it was a disappointment. I also couldn't get into either Jean Reno or Gérard Depardieu's characters. With a pencil-thin storyline and a lot of unrealistic sequences, the movie ends up more as a brainless time-waster, with an occasional chuckle here and there, but nothing more.

Strange Behavior (product link)
Horror / Thriller

A research facility is blamed when local teens are key to recent murders.

COMMENTS
Finally here is a semi-original early-80s horror film that I haven't already seen or heard of. Instead of dealing with the usual who-done-it slasher, we're introduced to a science facility that's doing research on the effects of mental conditions with the local teens. As a side effect (although never mentioned to the subjects) turns them into violent and murderous beings. The plot is somewhat similar to the 1998 theatrical film Disturbing Behavior (which also bears a similar title) if you consider experimenting on teens resulting in them killing a similar theme. Surprisingly, this is actually a smart little underrated horror film that doesn't let it fall into the 80's slasher mold that seemed dominant at the time. As a downside we're shown very few deaths, and the film drags on in parts since it mostly just revolves around the mystery behind the killings that eventually lead to the experiments conducted at the facility. It still manages to be original and interesting with its performances and storyline, resulting in a slightly above-average horror entry.

OVERALL
This is a decent film that somehow manages to reframe from being the stereotypical 80's slasher. Worth a check for a little something different, but don't expect a lot of deaths.

The Doll Master (product link)
Horror / Thriller

A group of people are invited to a doll musuem and get their likeness into a doll, but the doll master has other plans.

COMMENTS
Ah doll movies, why did they ever stop? I suppose people don't find'em scary anymore thanks to Chucky's weed-smoking ass, but I'm still a fan of the sub-genre. This film is a little different than the usual doll movies, where the dolls are these tiny things that run around killing people. The dolls that do the killing in this movie are life-size and you don't fully see them move until towards the end, so a lot of times you'll see a hand moving towards the actor or their eyes would be moving. I think it's actually quite effective; seeing those freaky-looking dolls move their eyes will surely send shivers down certain people. Sadly the movie just turns into a huge mess towards the end, with its plot-holes and predictability.

So the story is about a group of people, ranging from a high school student, to a photographer, who are all invited to go to a secluded doll museum and get their likeness turned into a doll. Now according to the legend in the movie if someone cares a lot for a doll it will somehow get a soul. With that in mind things start out perfect for the group, until a doll-obsessed girl in the group hangs herself due to someone ripping her beloved doll apart. Then the deaths begin one after the other, until it's revealed that the strange dolls around the house are committing these crimes. My biggest complaint about the movie would have to be the fact that the photographer seems to know it all about dolls. He goes into detail about how dolls can get a soul and even how to kill a doll if it turns bad. How or why he knew so much was never explained. Actually, a lot of stuff in this movie was never fully explained.

I think if the movie had a better script that it would have worked. I actually liked the flick in the first 30-minutes-or-so, but once I realized all the plot-holes my opinion slowly began to change. The movie is decent otherwise, except for the fact that the last 5-minutes has absolutely no subtitles! But by then you pretty much get the gist of everything that's going on.

OVERALL
A decent flick that had potential, but falls apart as more of the story is revealed. It has some fairly decent scenes involving the dolls that are somewhat freaky, but it's nothing scary otherwise. Worth a check if you're desperate for a new Korean horror flick.

House Of Fury (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

The Chinese pop group "Twins" are back with Stephen Fung's House of Fury. In this movie we follow an ex-special agent as his past catches up to him, which gets him captured, leading his two kids (Gillian Chung & Stephen Fung) to save him. I have mixed feelings on this flick. It tried to be a solid action/comedy, but I had a hard time believing the action and a lot of the comedy was rather stale. I like the idea that their father was once a secret agent and he spent most of his years telling stories to his kids about his younger days on the job. Of course they never believed one word of it. That is until later on when he's captured.

The action (much like a lot of Chinese Martial Arts Cinema) relies HEAVILY on wire-work, leading the characters to do a lot of gliding, and other unrealistic martial arts. I have a hard time watching this now, as I'm used to the more realistic and gritty fights like in Ong-Bak and other films of the like. When I see a guy practically flying from one building to the other, I just can't help but roll my eyes.

I felt the character development is too brief since the story tries to get into gear when Anthony Wong's character is captured. I actually thought the vilians were more interesting than the leads. Like the lead bad-guy, who was once a skilled sniper, but now is confined to a wheelchair. Odd thing is that if you look at the guy on the very left of the DVD art you can see him in a stance, and with claws no less. As far as I remember his only weapon was that strangely-fast wheelchair. I don't remember any claws? Also, 95% of his dialogue was in English, which seems to be the "norm" in a lot of mainstream chinese cinema, at least from what I've seen; they always like to mix English in there somewhere.

A lot of his thugs were fairly interesting, although they didn't get a lot of spotlight. Like for instance his son Nelson, who spent most of his screentime behind a video game, until towards the end when he picks up a stick and does all kinds of damage on our lead. All-in-all, the flick tried to be a hit by putting a bunch of familiar faces, and mixing a bunch of martial arts. Though, in the end it was nothing more than a predictable and uninteresting piece. Although, I have to admit that when they weren't flying around, the fighting was pretty decent.

Who's Got The Tape? (product link)
Comedy / Crime

My Wife is a Gangster director Jin-gyu Cho returns with another comedy entitled Who's Got the Tape? The story follows a group of petty gangsters as they come into position of a video tape showing a political figure accepting dirty money. The gang steals the tape in hopes of bribing the politician, but loses it in an incident at a video store. They track the tape down to a young punk whom took the tape thinkin' it was porn. As they bribe and threaten the guy, it's soon revealed that he doesn't even have the tape, but he believes his roommate does. The search continues!

I wanted to like this movie more, but I just couldn't. It seemed too long and a lot of the comedy didn't work enough for me. I liked the characters, especially the two lackeys of the lead gangster since they brought in most of the comedic elements. Also the sub-plot involving the young punk getting pointers on how to score with a girl he likes brought in some funny moments. There's a nice cameo by My Sassy Girl star, Tae-hyun Cha, as a criminal making a statement to an officer while in jail.

And of course there's a small blend of action, as most South Korean comedies I've seen usually do, but the majority of that doesn't happen until towards the end. Overall it's a decent comedy, but it the script needs a lot of work. 6/10

Spooky Encounters (product link)
Ghost / Martial Arts

PLOT
A brave man is dared to spend the night in a haunted house.

COMMENTS
This film is also known as "Encounters of the Spooky Kind", which I think is even more silly than the title that is used now. This is said to be a Hong Kong Evil Dead, because of it's cheesy effects, zombies and plot. After reading about that I had to check the film out and so I did.

The movie has a lot of small sub-plots and such as to how the town hero encounters all these ghosts and zombies. The first encounter is after the hero has a nightmare. Later on that day his friends tell him a trick where if you peel an apple in front of a mirror your dreams will come true. Naturally since the character is supposed to be courageous he does it. Soon after the first encounter starts.

The second encounter is when he is dared to stay the night in a haunted house for some money. He reluctantly accepts and stays the night. Little does he know that his wife has been going around behind his back and the lover she's with has a plan to kill him in the haunted house with the help of a sorcerer. The hero gets help from the sorcerer's younger brother. He teaches him how to avoid being killed.

That second encounter is pretty much the main one. The rest are just little ones that are just added within the movie with really nothing that has to do with the plot. The movie is quite cheesy and silly, but has a nice mixture of humor and sweet martial arts and wizardry. We get to see how powerful the brothers are towards the end of the film in a very cool battle.

This movie has a mix of good and bad parts. Good being the martial arts, weird zombies and humor. The bad mainly being the plot. It has a very simple plot, much like that of Evil Dead. Now when people say it's like a Hong Kong Evil Dead, I'd have to somewhat agree. They are quite differen't, but also have some subtle similarities.

I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I didn't quite like the plot, but the rest of the movie was fun and entertaining. There's a sequel to the film, but I probably won't be checking it out. I hear it isn't as good as the first, but it does have better effects.

OVERALL
Doesn't actually live up to some of the hype, but still an entertaining film to watch. Check this out if you wanna see zombies, martial arts and wizardry all in one movie, but remember to watch with an open mind.

The Unholy (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT:
A demon called "the Unholy" has a thing for killing priests who sin.

COMMENTS:
Read a little about this movie before seeing it and from most of what I read it seemed pretty positive. It's an underrated supernatural film in my opinion.

The story is basically about these priests who are murdered by a demon who makes them sin then kills them. Later on in the movie it's revealed that a single priest would be chosen to battle the demon known as the Unholy.

The film has some good creepy moments and maybe a scare or two, but it does fall apart a bit towards the end compared to the pace of the rest of the movie. It seemed out of place, like it was a bit rushed and I think it would have been better if we didn't see the demon the way we did. They ended up showing the whole demon and it's somewhat silly looking.

Other than that the film has good acting, directing, a decent plot and special effects. You may even learn some interesting stuff about religion. Also has an average amount of blood and gore and even a little T&A. The story is good, but predictable, especially at the end. I would have given the movie a lower-rating, but I really felt that it was a good movie, despite the ending.

OVERALL:
An underrated supernatural film. Check this if you're looking for something a little different than the regular horror film.

The Phone (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
Mysterious deaths occur after recieving strange phone calls.

COMMENTS
I heard a lot of mixed reviews on this film before seeing it, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The movie was directed by the same guy that did Nightmare, which I thought was a total IKWYDLS ripoff, but at least he tries to put a little more originality in this film.

The movie is basically about a reporter-chick that did a case on men who sleep with underage girls. She gets many threatening phone calls, so she decides to change her phone number. Immediately after she recieves her new number she begins to get strange phone calls. She investigates the source of the calls and learns more than she bargained for.

This was a pretty decent film, but I thought the sub-plot of the stalker was rather pointless and confusing. It's like the director tried to mix two different films together - one being supernatural and another being a slasher. The supernatural elements all have to do with the calls and the things the girl sees after she recieves them. Then there's this sub-plot of a guy stalking and wanting to kill the girl, which I thought just made the story confusing. It's like the director can't get away from the cliched slasher genre.

There weren't any good scares, it was a bit predictable, and there were some scenes that were obviously ripped off from Ringu, but it kept my interest and I've seen a lot worse, so I figured a 6-rating was best fitting. The ending had an interesting twist, but it was predictable like the rest of the film.

I also liked the two-disc DVD that came with the movie. It actually contained deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes stuff, that is actually kind of rare when it comes to asian dvd releases. At least from the ones I've seen. Hopefully the next film the director puts together just sticks with one genre.

OVERALL
A decent Korean horror film. Kept my interest and had its moments, but don't expect to get any good scares out of this. Worth a check if you're into asian horror.
