Three (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Three different stories, by three different directors, from three different countries.

COMMENTS
I thought the concept of this film was very sweet. Putting three leading directors, each from different countries with their own ideas and differences into one film. Very cool. I knew right away that I wouldn't like all three stories, but I had to appreciate the way they were told and directed and that's what I enjoyed most about the film.

--
Lets first start with the Chinese film by director Peter Chan called Going Home.

This was my favorite story and also the longest in the movie, being about an hour. What I liked most about it was the story. It wasn't meant to scare, but tell an interesting tale about love and devotion between two people.

The story is about a cop and his son, who move into an old apartment building, where barely anyone else lives. The only neighbor he has is a man and his wife who is bound to a wheelchair. One day the son turns up missing, so the cop asks his neighbor if hes seen him. The neighbor acts suspicious, so the cop investigates and learns the man's dark secret.

This story was actually so popular that it actually has its own DVD that is loaded with extras. I purchased the 3-disc DVD set that contained all three stories, so I wasn't able to see what extras it may have had. If I were to rate it on its own I would have given it a 7-rating. Very beautifully directed, good music that fit well with the story, and an excellent story.

--
The next story is called Memories by Korean director Ji Woon Kim.

I thought this was a pretty decent story. It was the only story that actually had some focus on scares, but I wasn't too into the story itself. It was a bit predictable, but interesting.

The movie basically tells the story from two point of views - the husband and wife. The husband's POV is basically just him waiting for his wife to return from wherever she is, where the wife's POV shows her waking up in the middle of the street not knowing who she is or where she's going. Pretty interesting concept, but rather predictable.

The directing was good and I liked the two POVs. It wasn't scary to me, but it did have a couple decent scares for the audience. I'd probably give this story a 6-rating.

--
The final story is called The Wheel by Thailand director Nonzee Nimibutr, who actually directed another film that I liked called Nang-Nak.

Now this story was a bit weird and I wasn't into it as much as I wanted to be. It's probably the worst in the three only because it's the most boring. I really liked the directing and dark atmosphere it had, but I just didn't like the story.

This is about a puppets legend, where its said that certain performers make their own puppets and if someone tries to use their puppets for themselves they are cursed. That's basically what happens here. A man finds a puppet left behind by a previous performer and he tries to use it as his own and he ends up getting cursed.

The story tries to scare the audience in parts, but fails in my opinion. I liked the directing and the story itself was decent, but the final result wasn't as I expected it to be. It was very well directed, but it was just too boring and it left me a little confused in the end. I was fairly disappointed by this. I'd give this one a 5-rating - it was just too boring for me.

--
So is this film worth it? I believe so. It shows the talents of all three directors and I felt my money was well spent, even though I didn't like one of the stories all too much. I'd give the film an overall 6-rating.

OVERALL
A good set of three different stories from three very talented directors. A couple of the stories weren't as good as they could have been, but it's still worth a look at least once.

Murder (product link)
Mystery / Horror

PLOT
A ruthless lawyer goes into a coma and awakens to find that she remembers nothing about her past.

COMMENTS
I read a bit about this film over at HKFlix and it sounded pretty interesting. It was described as having a hitchcock-feel to the directing and that's pretty much what sold me to get the film and see for myself. I'm glad I did, cuz this is a pretty good movie.

The story is about this ruthless female lawyer that nearly gets killed by her husband after they fight over a large amount of money. She awakens from her coma to find that she doesn't remember anything about her past. The ironic thing is the nurse that is supposed to take care of her is a client of the lawyers that was screwed over and she's back to get revenge.

The husband realizes his wife's state and instead of finishing what he set out to do, he keeps her alive only because she is the only one that knows where the money is hidden. She apparently hid the money they were fighing over before her "accident" occured. The husband hires the "nurse" to continue to take care of her and hopes she regains her memory.

As time goes on she realizes from people that knew her just how bad of a person she was and as she starts over with her new look on life, she and her husband end up falling in love all over again. Eventually she gets bits and pieces of her memory back and then has to choose whether to get revenge on her husband or forget it and be with him for the rest of her life.

I really wanted to describe a lot of the story, because I just think it's a very good and ironic premise for a film. The guys at HKFlix were right, the movie does have a hitchcock-feel in the way it was directed and that made the movie all-the-more enjoyable. I also liked the comedy that was thrown into the film. Normally comedy doesn't work too well in movies like this, but it actually fit.

There's nothing really meant to scare the audience in this film. It's more of an enjoyable thriller than anything. Sometimes I bend the rules on UHM to review a movie that isn't quite horror.

Good acting, directing, story, good movie overall. I would have given a higher-rating, but I felt that a 7 was most fitting for a movie like this. I liked it, but not as much as other films. Still a good watch.

OVERALL
A HK movie that has a good story and directing. If you like asian films then I suggest you check this underrated gem.

Another Heaven (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
A series of bizarre killings involving the eating of brains turns out to have a supernatural twist to it.

COMMENTS
I had the chance to see this Japanese film a long time ago, but I never took it, because I was dubious about whether it would actually be good or not, but I figured, what the hell, and checked it out and I'm glad I did, because it ended up being a pretty cool film.

The story is about this series of recent bizarre killings where the killer apparently likes to cook and eats its victims brains. Two detectives are assigned to look into it and they end up finding that the killer may have some supernatural power.

The movie really hooks you from the start and it's really fast-paced, but since it's about two hours it loses its pace after the first hour to tell the story about the killer and what he or she really is. The movie had a lot of potential of being better than it was, but I thought when they revealed what it really was that it kind of got silly. I guess I just expected something better.

It had a lot of good gore and a lot of sweet scenes for the first hour. The problem with this is it was just too long and they couldn't keep the pace of the first hour in the second. I thought a lot of scenes could have been disposed of, because they were a little too long and unneeded.

I really wanted to give the movie a higher rating, but it couldn't keep the fast pace it had in the beginning and when more of the story was revealed it got a little too "out there".

I believe Fangoria Magazine has the American rights to the film and will be distributing in the US sometime this year, so most likely you might see this film in your local Blockbuster. If you do get this film, enjoy the first hour of it, cuz the second wont be as good.

OVERALL
A good Japanese horror film that really hooks the audience in the beginning, but fails to keep the fast-pace in the beginning through the rest of the film. I would still recommend it for a good watch.

Audition (product link)
Horror / Art

PLOT
An audition is held to help a producer find a wife and a new actress for a movie.

COMMENTS
It's hard to say that this is a horror film, when it really has little to no horror in it. The first half of the film is like a slight comedic-romance. I thought the film was good, but was left with many questions towards the end.

The movie is pretty much about this lonely man who decides that it's time to remarry. He sets out to find a new woman when a friend holds an audition for a film they're working on. The man meets a girl and everything seems perfect, until the truth behind her slowly unravels to the shocking conclusion.

The ending of the film is very shocking indeed. It was confusing and looked incredibly painful. It's hard to explain it really without giving anything away, but lets just say it'll stick in your mind.

About half the film it's just about the lonely man and a woman he showed a liking to at the audition. It shows how he gradually begins to fall in love with her. This movie is very very slow, but it somehow kinda keeps you hooked. I knew something was gonna happen with the girl at the end and that's what kept me watching.

The acting in this film is excellent and very believable. The directing was also very well done. I think I was expecting too much from this movie and was a bit let down by the end result. Not by much though. This was more of a plot and actor-driven movie. It wasn't a slash'em up horror film. It had a very good plot.

My one real complaint about the movie, aside from it being slow and long, was the confusing ending. It just shows a bunch of stuff that just doesn't make sense. I dunno, maybe I need to watch it again. Anyway, that's really the only reason why I gave the film a 6-rating.

OVERALL
Good film, but not something you'd really expect. More of an actor-driven movie with a very good plot that leads to a whacked out ending. Not really recommended unless you don't mind waiting an hour for the horror to start. Might be a good film for all you plot lovers though.

Bio-Zombie (product link)
Dark Comedy / Horror

PLOT
A contaminated soft drink has the ability to turn people into zombies. Someone drinks it and ends up at a local mall.

COMMENTS
Many people have said that this film was funny and I have to agree that it was pretty funny. Some scenes were hilarious, while others will give you a slight chuckle. Also the dubbing made it all the more comedic.

What I didn't like about the movie was the b-movie effects and the silly plot, but I have to keep reminding myself that a film like this shouldn't be taken too seriously. I couldn't really follow the beginning for the film well, because it didn't quite make much sense. All I know is that some guys ordered a new bio-chemical weapon in the form of a soft drink that turns people into zombies and all hell breakes loose.

A lot of the movie was just silly, but some scenes weren't bad. I remember one scene where we get to see a zombie fight a group of other zombies because he likes this girl and he was trying to protect her from getting eatin. I didn't like that whole idea much, but the fact that zombies were fighting each other was pretty cool and you really don't see zombies do that in any other films. I always wanted to see something like that.

The directing was pretty good, but the acting could have been better. Like I said before though, can't take the film too seriously. I was hoping for a lot more zombies, so I was a bit let down when I didn't see that many. Some people compared this to Dawn of the Dead because of the whole being trapped in a mall with zombies thing, but really that's the only thing that's similar between the two. I guess I was hoping for a comedic Dawn of the Dead and was a bit let down.

The reason for giving the film a 6-rating was because of the let down and I didn't much liked the look of the zombies. You can't expect much from a film with a low-budget, which I'm sure this one had.

OVERALL
Basically this film had some cool moments here and there and delivered a lot of good comedy. If you're looking for a good zombie film though, I don't really recommend this. If you want something silly you should check it.

Dark Water [2002] (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
A mom and her daughter move in an old apartment, where water leaks from the their ceiling and a strange girl appears wherever they go.

COMMENTS
I heard about this movie a long time ago and I knew I wanted to see it, because of the director Hideo Nakata, who also directed Ring and other supernatural films.

The story is just about a mom and her daughter moving into and old run-down apartment building. Everything seems to be working for them, then the mother notices the leak on the ceiling. She doesn't think much of it. Things start to get a little strange from there. The mom begins noticing a little girl in a yellow raincoat every now and then and in the midst of it all, she is going through a custody battle for her daughter.

The movie has its creepy moments, but when you've seen all Hideo Nakata's work with the horror genre, then you realize that the same old stuff gets a little repetitive. I never got scared in any scenes, but that's mainly because I don't scare easy and I've seen all this kinda stuff before. No gore or blood, it's just story-driven, with some tense and creepy moments thrown around.

I thought the story was pretty interesting, but predictable. The ending wasn't too bad, but it wasn't too good either. The movie had its moments and it kept my interest, so I thought a 7-rating was most fitting. I guess I just expected a lot more from this. Either way, it's not Hideo Nakata's best work, but still a good film none-the-less.

OVERALL
Good Japanese film, but I expected more. Has some creepy moments, but nothing that the director hasn't already shown us before in the Ring trilogy. Worth a look if you're a fan of Hideo Nakata.

Cross Fire (product link)
Horror / Action/Adventure

PLOT
A young girl has the power of pyrokinesis - the ability to start fires with the mind - and she uses it for vengeance.

COMMENTS
I liked this film, but I felt there was something missing in it, which is why I gave it a 6-rating. I guess I was expecting maybe a little more or something. Oh well.

The film is kind of like an updated version of Stephen King's Firestarter, only with better graphics and more than one person with powers. The main character has the power of pyrokinesis, but later on in the film we meet up with two more characters with similar powers. One guy has the power to control peoples minds with a touch of his hand and a young girl has similar powers to the main character.

Towards the end of the movie we get to see a nice battle between the three, with the guy controlling the young girl. The effects in this movie were amazing. The way they used the fire was very appealing to the eye and I just wished they used more of it. Some of the deaths by fire looked wicked painful.

The directing was good, since most japanese horror directors are good at what they do, and the acting was also well done. The plot is simple - A young woman, who has been outcasted throughout most of her life, meets up with a guy and his younger sister. They grow a special bond quickly in the beginning of the film, but it later breaks when the sister gets murdered by local teen killers. The young woman then gets revenge by taking out those who killed the man's young sister.

The cops are later called in to investigate and eventually learn about the woman and her powers. Towards the end of the movie you get to see a nice stand off between the woman and a bunch of cops and snipers. Was pretty exciting.

The only reason why I didn't really give the movie a higher rating, was I guess I was expecting too much from it and was kind of let down. I also thought some of the movie was a little slow. Other than that it was rather good.

OVERALL
A nice update on Stephen King's Firestarter. I expected too much from it, so was let down a bit at the end. Still not a bad film. Had a lot of good effects.

Evil Dead Trap (product link)
Horror

PLOT
A reporter her some of her crew go into an old military base to check into a case only to be killed off by a mysterious killer.

COMMENTS
I never really heard about this movie until it was mentioned somewhere on my board and then I was kindly offered a chance to view it. I didn't expect much from it and so I wasn't surprised that I didn't like it as much as I could have. Don't let the name fool you; it has nothing to do with the Evil Dead trilogy. This is a japanese horror film with english subtitles.

This is a very strange movie. A lot of scenes just didn't make sense and I think that's why I gave it a 5-rating. It just had too many plot holes and just got silly towards the end. First you think it's a slasher film, but then all of a sudden it turns supernatural on you. I think the movie has an identity crisis where it doesn't know if it's a slasher of a supernatural flick. It's good to mix the two sometimes, but I dont think it felt too well in this movie, because it just made things confusing.

What I did like about the movie was the death scenes. They were very innovative and painful looking. Gotta love that. As for gore, it had a moderate amount, except at the end when things really got weird.

The acting was okay and so was the directing. There weren't any real scary scenes, which dissapointed me. I've seen a lot of creepy japanese horror films and I was hoping this would be one of them. I guess not.

OVERALL
Not as good as other japanese horror films. Confusing, but keeps you a bit interested. Check this movie if you're into strange flicks.

Freeze Me (product link)
Thriller / Horror

PLOT
A woman gets raped by three men. Years later she has regained her life until the men return for more.

COMMENTS
I heard a lot of mixed reviews on this, but I decided to give it a try since some people said it was somewhat similar to I Spit On Your Grave. It ended up being decent at best, but I was hoping for more, especially towards the end.

It's basically about this girl that is raped and videotaped by three men. They let her go and she goes on with her life and never speaks of the incident to anyone. Years later her life is going good until the three men return to make a new video, but this time she wont just walk away.

I thought the story wasn't very original, but it had potential of being good. I thought the concept of her freezing the men's dead bodies so they dont rot was interesting. There's not much for gore or anything that would make you cringe your teeth to. It's a predictable film, but it kept my interest and I found the directing and acting to be pretty decent, which is why I decided on a 5-rating.

Just a small little known fact that the woman in the film is a famous Japanese nude model.

OVERALL
A decent movie, but I expected more. Unoriginal plot, but it had potential of being good. Check this if you're a fan of Asian films, but don't expect too much.

Horror Hotline...Big Head Monster (product link)
Ghost / Horror

PLOT
A television crew for the US goes to a Hong Kong radio station to do a behind-the-scenes report on what they do. What they do is let listeners call in to tell ghost stories. One of the stories ends up being all too real.

COMMENTS
Despite the fact that this film has a very strange title and a silly looking cover, it's actually a bit of a good movie. It's interesting how they build up the legend of the "Big Head Baby" as the film goes on. The TV crew and the guys behind the radion station end up checking into the legend and find more and more clues as time goes on.

It has some creepy moments here and there, but nothing scary. The directing was pretty good and so was the acting. I liked how TV crew spoke english to each other. It was a bit of a shock to see that in an Asian film. Especially with as much english as they spoke. Makes it easier though.

What I didn't like about the movie was the ending. It was too much like Blair Witch, with the screaming and running away after seeing something and the audience seeing what goes on through the TV-camera's point of view.

I got the DVD so it was actually loaded with a few extra stuff. One of that being two endings. The theatrical ending that ripped-off Blair Witch and this other ending that took place inside a someone's house. Wasn't as creepy as the other ending.

I thought it was very sweet how towards the end of the movie the movie lets you choose which ending you want. I've never seen a movie do that before, so I was quite pleased. I wish more DVD-movies had interaction like that. Would be cool to pick out a character's fate by a simple click.

We never really get to see the "Big Head Baby", but during one scene we get to see a scope of how big the head on the baby really is. The whole legend kind of reminded me of the legend of the Jersey Devil, where a witch gave birth to a baby with a goat head and wings and shit. Pretty wicked stuff.

Would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I didn't like the Blair Witch ending, even though it was a lot better than the other ending. Good movie though.

OVERALL
Good horror film to come out of Hong Kong. Had some creepy scenes, but a whack Blair Witch-ripoff ending. Check this out if ya can.

Junk (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Thieves meet up at an old military facility and end up fighting off a bunch of zombies.

COMMENTS
This has to be one of the best zombie films I've ever seen, along side Dawn of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, and the remake of Night. It has lots of John Woo-style action and lots of zombies.

Starts off with three thieves robbing a jewelry store. They make away with a billion yen worth of jewelry and have to meet up with their contact at some old military facility. The rest is pretty much already known - One of them ends up getting bit by a zombie and a bunch more zombies rise and so on.

This movie is what most US zombies movies should be like. It has lots of excellent action and guns and a bunch of zombie killing. You can see a little Night of the Living Dead influence here and there, but the movie really reminded me of the game Resident Evil, from the military facility down to a zombie boss. Very cool.

The zombies in this movie are slow and predictable, except one main zombie - the dead wife of one of the scientists who worked on the government project to raise the dead. Apparently the scientist couldn't handle his wife being dead so he created a formula to make the dead rise and used it on his wife. She's different from the other zombies because she was the first to get the formula and she is able to think freely and seems to have super-human strength to boot.

It's just so much like RE and me being a fan of the game is what made me really enjoy this movie. The effects were average and there was a lot of gore, since we see zombies munchin' on human intestines a lot.

I was hoping to see the zombies escape the facility and go into a local town or something, but no such luck. It was interesting to see some english in the movie because lots of Japanese films I've seen naturally have no english. Just be sure you can read fast because it's subtitled. I think if you're a fan of the Resident Evil games, like I am, you're certainly enjoy this movie.

I would have given the movie a higher rating, but I was dissapointed that it only took place in the facility and no where else. Other than that the movie is good.

OVERALL
One of the best zombie films I've ever seen. Those japanese people really know how to make a good horror film. If you're a fan of the Resident Evil series, you'll love this movie.

Kairo (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Ghosts begin seeping into the real world through computers.

COMMENTS
I heard about this movie a while back and thought the trailer for it looked pretty cool, so I decided to go on a hunt for it. It took me a while, but I finally got my hands on a VHS copy of this. You might think that the plot is nothing original, but this film has a lot of originality in it. I guess it's so good that Hollywood wants a Wes Craven to do a remake of it under the american-translated title PULSE.

To go more into the plot, it's basically about the ghost world actually being so full of ghosts that it has run out of room to hold them all so some ghosts are left going into our realm of existence. That would explain why ghosts would get to us by computer, because they travel through the internet. It sounds silly at first, but when you actually see the movie it's actually quite interesting and original. The concept is also similar to the saying in Dawn of the Dead - "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth."

In order for the ghosts to stop from people dying and more ghosts being created and overflowing their already-filled up world they would make living people dissapear into their own lonliness. They would show themselves to people which would somewhat make them go crazy and eventually turn into nothingness. Eventually towards the end of the movie the whole city is pretty much gone and it closely resembles that of the end of the world. I didn't really expect the ghosts to get that far, but it was damn cool that they did.

I liked how the director made the movie focus on different people and how the ghosts affect their lives. Later on the people meet up, which I thought was also cool. The movie has a lot of creepy and suspenseful scenes, though it's rather long so it does have its slow points.

I also liked how the director made the scenes even creepier by blocking out all sound except the faint whipsers of "help me" that certain ghosts would echo. I thought that was a VERY good way to freak out the viewer.

There are some small similarities to RING in here, but nothing big enough to consider it a ripoff. I liked how the ghosts would appear and dissapear through scenes of the movie. I decided to go with a 7-rating because I enjoyed it and thought it had a lot cool scenes and special effects. I would have given it a higher rating if there more going on. Still a good movie though.

So the question is would it make a good remake? I think it would. It has a cool concept and a lot of good scenes that would scare the audience. I'm not much of a Wes Craven fan, so I can't really say if Wes can pull off the effectiveness of the original. We'll have to wait and see. It's good to see Hollywood finally noticing that the audience wants scares and not the regular teens getting killed by a masked maniac.

OVERALL
This is yet another good horror movie to come out of Japan. It has a lot of innovative and creepy scenes. The concept is also very good. It's almost 2 hours so it has a lot of slow moments, but if you're into it as much as I was you'll enjoy it. Check this out if you can or just wait for the US remake.

Kakashi (product link)
Horror / Fantasy

PLOT
A girl searches for her missing brother which leads her to a strange village that has a fixation with scarecrows.

COMMENTS
Kakashi means Scarecrow in Japanese, so that being the title and having the plot about a strange town full of scarecrows makes for an interesting story. It's just too bad it wasn't that good of a story.

Like I stated above, the story is basically about a girl searching for her brother who has turned up missing. She searches his room to find a letter from a girl located in a small village. She goes to the village and meets up with a lot of the strange villagers. She notices a lot of scarecrows everywhere and eventually finds out that the people have a celebration of some sort that deals with the scarecrows.

This was a pretty decent film. I strayed away from checking it sooner, because of the negative reviews I read, but a few people I knew recommended me to check it, so I decided I might as well. The movie kept my interest and I like movies that deal with scarecrows and such, so that was a plus. I also like movies that deal with people going to strange towns for some reason.

My main complaint about the movie would have to be the fact that not much goes on. It goes on a rather slow pace and there weren't any decent scares. Some parts might have seemed slightly creepy, but having seen many good asian films as I have that have so many genuinely good scares, this just pales in comparison and I wasn't impressed.

The story gets a little weird as time goes on and despite the incredibly slow-pace of the movie, I was never really bored. There's not much for gore or even blood in the movie. I think there's actually a PG-rating for this, although I could be wrong.

The directing wasn't too bad and the movie had a nice dark atmosphere. I would have given this a lower-rating, but I found it to be a decent watch, at least once anyway.

OVERALL
A very slow-paced film. A decent watch if you're a fan of asian horror films.

Nang Nak (product link)
Horror / Ghost

PLOT
A man goes out to war and leaves his pregnant wife behind. When he returns home things seem a little odd.

COMMENTS
This is a winner of four awards at the Pan Asia Film Festival including Best Picture. This is also actually based on Thai urban legend, which supposedly happened back in the late 1800s. My mom, being Thai, told me that they taught her the legend back in school.

The legend is about a man who goes off to war and leaves his pregnant wife behind. While he was in war she gave birth, but had problems with the pregnancy and ended up losing her life along with the baby. Now supposedly her love for her husband was so great that even SHE wouldn't accept death, so when her husband finally returned home she made him believe that she and the baby were still alive, so seemingly everything was perfect.

After a while the husband notices the villagers acting funny around him and try to warn the husband that his wife is a ghost. He refuses to believe it and his wife ends up harming the villagers who tried to warn her husband. After a while he starts believing it and towards the end of the movie he is chased down by his wife and held up in a Temple, which is the same as a church.

Around that part of the movie we finally get to see the horror aspect of the film. The movie for the most part seemed to be somewhat of a love story, but towards the end we get to see the wife's true power. There were a couple creepy scenes in the end.

What I really liked about the movie was the story. I thought it was very good and it was interesting to see that in the movie they immediately stated the fact that the wife and baby were both ghosts in the beginning of the film, where as in most movies leave that for the "twist" ending. I guess there's no point in that since it's based on a legend anyway.

The acting was very well done and the directing was pretty good. They made the film look as though it was filmed in the 80s, when it was really only filmed in '99, so it was weird when I saw some good special effects in the movie. You tend to forget the actual age of the film.

This movie might be rather boring for some, but if you really pay attention to the love story behind it you'll really get into it and feel for the characters. Besides, it all pays off in towards the end anyway.

I would have given it a higher-rating, but I felt that, although it was a good movie, it didn't have enough stuff going on for me and I figured a 7-rating was best fitting. Still a good movie none-the-less. After watching the movie it proves that love really is stronger than death and if this stuff really happened then, geeze

Most likely the only way you'd be able to catch this film would be to purchase it online or catch it at a film festival. If you'd like to purchase it, you can do so by clicking here.

OVERALL
Good Thai horror film, with an excellent story. Don't bother looking for this unless you're really only seeing it for the story behind it and not the horror aspect, cuz then you'll end up disappointed.

PLOT
Group of friends are hunted down my one of their old friends who supposedly committed suicide.

COMMENTS
Read a little about this film before actually deciding to purchase it and from what I read it seemed like it would be a good movie. Too bad I still don't exactly know what the plot is even after viewing the movie. All I gather from what I saw was some crazy ghost-chick dressed in black was chasing around a group of friends ends up killing them one by one.

The main cause of all the confusion for me was the fact that it had so many plot-holes. It would be showing one thing then something else would come up, which would just confuse my ass. I thought I had it figured out towards the end of the movie then all this other crap happened..

The good points about the movie was it did have a few cool scenes and effects. One scene I liked was when a guy was viewing a film he recorded with his video camera and while he was checking the LCD screen a hand comes out and reaches for him. I liked the effects for that scene. The ghost chick in this film reminded me of the one in Ring.

When it comes to scares this movie really doesn't have any. It has some interesting or somewhat creepy scenes, but nothing really too good. The acting and directing was okay.

Main flaw in this film is the plot-holes and that's why I figured I'd give it a 5-rating [out of 10]. It had a lot of cool scenes, but it wasn't enough to make it a good movie. If it had a better story and a good twist ending then I'd give it a 7-rating [out of 10] or something, but it just didn't have what it could have had.

OVERALL
A confusing Korean supernatural horror film. Nothing really scary. A few memorable scenes because of the neat special effects, but nothing else. A really confusing plot. Nothing special here.

Horror / Mystery

PLOT
A group of high school students pull a prank on a fellow classmate and end up killing him. Now they have to cover it up.

COMMENTS
When I first read about this movie I thought it was gonna be supernatural, like the dead student's ghost or something haunts them. I mean, you'd get the impression from the plot and the cover of the movie that, but I was actually way off. The damn movie turned out to basically be a Korean remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer. 10 minutes into the movie I realized that and boy was I pissed. I watched it all anyway.

The movie is interesting, but it's all aready been done so many times in the US, so I was bored in parts, because it was just the same thing we've all already seen. I was amazed by the close similarities it holds to I Know. The teens kill the classmate on accident so they tell each other that no one will know and they try to cover it up. Apparently a year goes by and for some reason they start dying off one by one by a mysterious masked killer with an oversized red raincoat. Sound fimilar?

The movie had its moments and that's why I figured I'd give it a 5-rating [out of 10]. It's not THAT bad of a film, but the lack of originality really hits it hard here. The acting was okay and so was the directing. I thought it had some cool music though. Had a nice mixture of slight techno here and there. Wasn't too bad. I think that's one of the only things I really enjoyed while watching this movie.

The death scenes were nothing special. No good scares either. Maybe an occasional pop-up. Oh well. I'll make sure to do more research before purchasing a movie next time.

OVERALL
Pretty much a korean remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Had its moments, but wasn't anything special. Don't bother with this.

Ring 0: Birthday (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
This is the prequel to the popular RING series, which follows the girl behind the infamous video.

COMMENTS
I was sadly disappointed with this film. When comparing it with the other two movies, it just doesn't match up. This one focuses more on the girl that is on the cursed video tape and how she really was in life and such.

This film doesn't have as much creepiness as the other two movies. I think it's mainly kind of a tragic love story. One small scene somewhat reminded me of the climactic events in Carrie. Just a small similarity, nothing more. I was hoping for a better ending, but was let down a bit. It's interesting to see how the girl was in real life though. She was always an outcast it seems. I guess that's what leads up to where she is now.

There's an interesting twist that is brought up towards the end of the movie, but it fails to do anything real major to help the film. It just draws more confusion. Would have been better off without it in my opinion. I did enjoy the movie though. It wasn't really boring and I was always curious about the girl. This movie pretty much answered all my questions.

The acting was very well done. Especially done by the lead actress who plays the girl on the tape. I didn't expect this movie to be so much of a love story. I was expecting some really creepy stuff showing the events before the actual video tape came about. Oh well. I wouldn't be surprised if a Ring 3 came about sometime in the near future. It started with the book, then the television series, then went to the big screen. Now Hollywood wants a piece of it by making an american version. This is a big series. I just hope they end it with a BANG!

If you ever want to see the american version, I suggest you check out these japanese versions first. Can't wait to see how us americans top the japanese in the creepiness factor. Probably not by much.

Anyway, would have given this film a lower rating, but it's a good movie on its own, but not as good when compared to the other two films.

OVERALL
A somewhat of a let down in the RING series. Expected a lot more, but ended up with a tragic love story. If you're a fan of the series, then check this one out just so you can see that you've seen them all.

Troublesome Night 3 (product link)
Horror / Comedy

PLOT
The lone surviver of a mass-suicide cult gives birth and dies. Twenty-years-later the child is now a woman, who begins to see strange things.

COMMENTS
I didn't know too much about this film aside from it having some cool special effects and such. I figured it wouldn't be anything too special and that's pretty much what it was. It had its moments, but overall it was just another movie with a anti-christ theme to it.

It starts off with this swat team raiding an old building, only to find many dead bodies, which were apparently people in a cult, who killed themselves for one reason or another. They find a pregnant woman on an alter about to give birth. She gives birth, but dies immediately after.

Fast-forward twenty years and the baby is now a woman. It doesn't take long before strange things start to happen. A small group of religious warriors band together to protect her from the evil that is after her.

This is one of the better anti-christ-type films thanks to the asian touch with martial arts and superior special effects. It's enjoyable for the most part, but the story dwindles down as the film goes on. Some of the story somewhat reminded me of the movie Lost Souls, which isn't necessarily a good thing. The acting and directing is pretty decent. No scares or gore. Would have given the movie a lower-rating, but it was interesting and not as bad as a lot of other films I've seen.

OVERALL
Decent watch. Has some good special effects and starts off pretty interesting, but the story starts to die out a bit as it goes on. Predictable, but not as bad as other anti-christ movies.

PLOT
A girl helps create art for a game and she visits an old house she inherited to scope out the landscape and also use it in the new game.

COMMENTS
I could have seen this film a long time ago, but I kept putting it off, because I heard a lot of mixed reviews and it just didn't really interest me too much, but in the end my curiousity got the best of me.

The plot is somewhat original, but also predictable in parts. It's about a girl who helps create art for a new video game. One day she and one of the other creators of the game decide to use an old house she inherited for the game, but before they can do that they have to go into the house and map it out. Once in there they discover more and more about the girl's past and secrets are revealed.

This movie is strange, but good. The directing is very original, using different colors for the background in the film and during scenes it feels as though you are playing a video game. Once they entered the house it reminded me of something like Resident Evil, with keys being left around the house that open locked doors and secret doors hidden behind objects. That gave it another video game feel.

In the movie they bring a home video camera, so we see what they see through the camera in parts as well. That made you feel as though you were there with them, which was another thing I liked. What I didn't like about the movie was the fact that it was predictable as time went on, but it's not as bad as other films, so that didn't bother me too much.

It had its share of decent chills and scares here and there, but nothing special. I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I wasn't too into the twist towards the end of the film.

OVERALL
An interesting movie that has an original way of being directed. Predictable story, but worth a look once if you're used to strange Japanese horror films.

PLOT
A small town gets cursed by something known as uzumaki, which is translated to "vortex".

COMMENTS
I heard about this movie a long time ago and many times I questioned whether to purchase it or not, and I always seemed to pass it up, but finally gave in a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did, because this is a sweet movie. It has some freaky scenes and a great story.

This is now one of my favorite movies. It's original and has some excellent special effects. Better than I thought it would. Some of the stuff in this movie I've never seen in any other movie before. One of my favorite scenes is a part where a man spins his eyes around and around creating a vortex to prove a point to his family. The script to this movie is very innovative and original. I've never seen a movie based on vortex's before. Though I do remember seeing a scene in Dark City that reminded me of a scene in this movie.

There's nothing really scary in this movie, but there are some chilling parts. It has some small humor now and then like most Japanese movies. The directing was very well done. I liked how the director would create a spiral with the computer that would follow the main characters in certain scenes of the movie. It was cool to look around for it while watching the movie. Never seen that done before either.

The movie keeps you interested and entertained from start to finish. I would have given it a 10-rating, but decided to hold off on that and settle with a 9. It's still a great film. The problem is it's only on Region 3 DVD, so unless you have a DVD-rom or an all-region DVD player, you will most likely not be able to catch this film. Hopefully someone will distribute this in the US in the near future.

Hollywood is already remaking two japanese horror films, RING and PULSE, so I wouldn't be surprised if they remake this movie too. I rather they not though. I think it's better left alone.

OVERALL
One of my favorite japanese horror films. Very original story. Has some freaky scenes and stuff that I've never seen before. Check this out if you can view Region 3 DVDs. You wont find it on VHS.

Visible Secret (product link)
Ghost / Romance

PLOT
A young man meets up with a girl who is supposedly able to see ghosts with her left eye.

COMMENTS
The plot for this movie may sound a bit silly, but it's far from it. The film has great visuals and haunting music. I loved the atmosphere and the directing. It also has a really cool opening scene.

Starts off with a bunch of people waiting to cross a busy street. One guy gets pushed and accidently falls into the street where there's oncoming traffic. Next thing you know it, he gets his ass decapitated and he's walking around the street without a head. I thought the effects for that scene were sweet and it was funny to watch the guy stumbling without his head.

This movie had a mixture of smart comedy, which I liked because it brought more life to the film at times when it would seem to get a little slow. This movie has many similarities to the Sixth Sense, because the main female actress in the film can be compared to the little boy in Sixth Sense since they are both able to see ghosts and are sort of forced to help them.

There really aren't any scary scenes, but some nice tension-filled ones. I really don't think this movie was necessarily meant to be scary, but more-so entertaining with an interesting love story thrown in the mix.

What I didn't really like about the movie was the somewhat confusing ending. It was a nice ending with an interesting twist, but it totally defeats some of the events that happened throughout the film, so then the viewer is left wondering what the fuck the ending is really supposed to be. Never-the-less it was a good ending, but a somewhat predictable one.

I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I didn't quite understand how it ended, so I had to just settle for a 7, which is still a good rating. Even though Hollywood is already making 2 remakes of Japanese horror films, I doubt they'll do one on this.

An interesting fact is that apparently the poster for the movie, which you can see on the top left, was banned by in Hong Kong as being "too scary." I don't see what's so damn scary about it, but the tagline "What's that sitting next to you?" is very sweet.

OVERALL
Good movie with haunting music and great visuals. Had a weird plot, but a good story behind it. Lots of nice humor to lighten up the mood. Bad thing about the movie is the confusing, and somewhat predictable ending. Check this Hong Kong horror film if you ever find it.

Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Rockers, zombies, aliens, guns!

COMMENTS
Haha, what a fun movie. I really enjoyed this film. There are many plot holes, but you forget all of them because of all the whacked out shit that's going on.

From what I gather aliens are taking over the world. They turn local townspeople into zombies and some rock n' rollers are left to fend off against them. It's a silly plot, but who needs a good plot when you got a bunch of zombies and loads of guns.

There's a mixture of sci-fi, comedy, horror, action, and yes, even romance! There's a funny scene where these two zombies come together and kiss. Haha, they were lovers in life and now lovers in death. This film reminded me of some of the Troma films we have in the US. I think if you're a fan of Troma you might enjoy this movie.

Other stuff I thought was cool was how they used computer effects to create the exploding zombie heads when someone would shoot them. It looked pretty sweet at first, but it gets a little old fast. Still cool to see though. There were good graphics in most of the film, but for the effect used in the climactic ending it just got a little silly and unrealistic.

For the zombies themselves - They reminded me of the ones from Dawn of the Dead. They were rather blue and incredibly slow. I think the director was inspired by such classic Romero films as Dawn and especially Night, because they even make reference to the film in this movie.

There's a lot of comedy in this that made it fun to watch. Kind of like with the comedy in Evil Dead 2. There's just so much weird shit going on in this movie, it's hard to name it all. Some of it reminded me of a comic book because some of the characters seemed to have some magical powers. They don't really explain anything, but I don't think an explanation was needed. I was surprised that in all the chaos they had time to throw in a little tranvestite romance in the mix *gags*

Anyway, I thought the directing by Tetsuro was unique and fast-paced. I really enjoyed this. Would have given the movie a higher rating, except I didn't really like how the zombie acted and looked and I thought the ending could have been a lot better.

OVERALL
Very cool Japanese flick. It's got it all - tits, zombies, rock n' roll, magic powers, alien takeovers, gore, comedy. If you're a fan of Troma or of zombies in general, check this film out!

Dead And Buried (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
A series of murders happen in a small town and the local sheriff gets to the bottom of it, only to find a dark secret of the dead returning to life.

COMMENTS
I heard very little of this movie before actually seeing it, so I watched it not knowing much about the plot or anything. Judging from the title and the plot you would think that it's pretty much a zombie movie, but it's actually not really a zombie film at all. Despite the fact that the dead do return to life due to some voodoo the "zombies" look like normal people. They are what you would call a "voodoo zombie" where they look normal and aren't as viscious or have the same zombie characters we've seen in other movies.

I actually enjoyed the movie and especially the ending. The ending is a bit predictable, but it caught me off guard, so I was actually rather surprised by it. I believe the ending is what I really enjoyed most about the movie.

The movie starts interesting enough with a guy taking pictures of a beautiful woman when out of no where a mob of townspeople surround him. They end up taking pictures while killing him. Through most of the beginning you are left a bit confused as to why the townspeople are killing any new people who wander into their town. It all falls together towards the end.

I was surprised to see Freddy Krueger star, Robert Englund, in the movie. He had a small role as one of the crazy murderous townspeople. Very cool to see a fimilar face in the horror industry in such an old film. The directing wasn't bad and the acting was pretty good.

I would have given the movie a higher rating, but I wanted the people to be more zombie-like and if the movie had more action going on in the middle I would have enjoyed it more. I really liked the movie either way. I believe this movie is out of print so it'll be hard to find.

OVERALL
A good underrated horror film to come out of the 80s. Somewhat of a zombie movie, but it's not your typical zombie film. These zombies are far different from the brain-eaters you usually see. Check this movie out if you can find it.

Drama / Horror

PLOT
In the middle of a cival war in Spain, a boy constantly sees the ghost of a little boy in the orphanage in which he lives in.

COMMENTS
I heard a lot of positive stuff about this Spanish movie and I've been greatly anticipating it since I first saw the trailer last year. I'm glad I finally got to check it and way before its video release here in the US. Although I expected a little more than the movie offered, it still had a very good story and some creepy moments.

It takes place in 1939, where a boy who moves into an orphanage, because his father's part of a cival war that is going on in Spain. Being the new kid, he deals with the occasional bullying and frequent encounters with a ghost of a little boy named Santi. As the story goes on we learn more about Santi and what his true intentions are to be haunting the orphanage.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a bit slow, but it's interesting from the start. It has a great story and it's original compared to many other films that deals with ghosts. There are some sweet special effects and some creepy scenes involving Santi. It wasn't as scary as I had hoped, which disappointed me a little.

It was said a long time ago that the ending was supposed to be something really controversial, but it was nothing out of the ordinary. It was actually a bit predictable, but still very cool. The story for this movie just basically explains the meaning of ghosts. The acting was good and the directing was excellent.

I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I felt that I was a little let down with all the hype it got before hand. I expected more scares and a more controversial ending. I should know better. None-the-less it was still a good movie with a great story.

I believe this movie will be released in the US in September of this year, so be sure to rent this mofo when it hits video shelves.

OVERALL
A good original story. Expected more scares and a better ending, but still enjoyable and interesting. Check this when it hits video in September.

Burial Ground: The Nights Of Terror [Uncut] [Italian Shock] (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Group of people get invited to a scottish mansion only to be eatin' by the dead.

COMMENTS
Man, what the hell was going on in that film. I see these people going at on the grass behind some mansion and the next thing you know it the dead start to rise outta no where. What I don't get is why they are rising and why so many dead people are buried in the garden.

Anyway, the lameass film starts out with a group of people who are invited to spend the night at some scottish mansion, which is occupied by someone known as "the professor" and a few of the workers there. There's a lot of mindless sex in the beginning then the dead start walking around and attacking everyone. The zombie effects were very crappy. They all looked the same and they all looked like they were burnt to hell. They looked like friggin' burnt toast.

The plot makes no real sense at all. There's no explanation as to why they got invited to the mansion and why no one really seems to ask questions. The acting was horrible and they added this twisted incest sub-plot in the story between the mother and son, which also didn't make any sense or had a point to it.

There was an interesting nipple bitting scene though. Which brings me to the gore. I guess there was a lot of gore, but it was the same old stuff over and over again. The zombies attack someone, then the next scene shows them eating the person's guts. It was done at least 3 times in this film. They could have at least come up with someone more original than that. The guts looked real though, I wouldn't be surprised if they came from a pig or something.

The directing was pretty crappy and the lighting was even worse. I could barely see what the hell was going on through half the film. It was all mainly in the dark. I was incredibly bored with the film and all the zombie action that was going on. Normally I like to see a horror flick with loads of zombies, but the zombies were obviously guys in burnt up masks and it just didn't do much for me.

One thing that seperates these zombies from other ones you might see in other horror films is that these zombies used weapons and their skulls would crack like eggs. I thought that was kinda funny. There's nothing suspenseful, mysterious, or scary about this film. It's just a lame Night of the Living Dead wannabe. The only thing I liked about this movie was the ending. That was decent, but the rest of the film was just crap.

OVERALL
Another pointless zombie flick from the 80s. Don't bother with this film. It's just nudity and dumbass zombies, with a little incest thrown in.

Brainslasher (product link)
Horror / Science Fiction

PLOT
In a post-apocalyptic world people are seperated from those who lurk underground and those living in the main-land that spend all their time hooked up through virtual reality.

COMMENTS
I was sent this film a while back and the title didn't ring a bell, but the actors, Bruce Campbell and Angus Scrimm did. I didn't know they were in it and I figured since they were that it would be good. Well, I guess not even cool actors can save a movie, because I found it to be rather bland. Some people may also know this movie as Mindwarp.

The movie started out weird showing a girl and her mother hooked up to this computer system that feeds virtual reality images into their brain. The girl gets fed up and wants to do something different. The main guy behind the virtual reality gives her, her wish to be set free into the real world and she finds out that the world has turned into a wasteland because of the war.

This movie is basically a ripoff of the Omega Man and Road Warrior. The only thing I really liked about this movie was Bruce Campbell's character. He was the "road warrior" type of character; surviving in the wasteland alone fighting off deformed canabalistic human beings.

We don't get to see Angus Scrimm's character until later on in the film. He turns out to be the main bad guy. Cool to see the two horror icons in the movie. You all may remember Angus as the TALL MAN from the Phantasm films. You can expect to see the duo in Phantasm 5.

Well anyway, the movie had a good amount of blood and gore. The effects were cheesy but affective. My complaint is the lack of originality and the fact that it seemed like they could have done so much more for the plot. Would have given a lower-rating, but I liked the beginning and Bruce's character to consider this an "okay" movie.

OVERALL
Sweet to see two horror icons in one movie. Just too bad the story-line wasn't good enough. Good amount of gore, but not enough action. Check this if you're a fan of Bruce or you got nothing else to see. You might find it other it's Mindwarp title.

Brotherhood Of The Wolf (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

PLOT
Two men are sent to help a king find out whats been killing his people.

COMMENTS
I first saw this film when it was in limited release at theatres, but at the time I didn't review it. After my second viewing of the 3-DVD Director's Cut I decided to give it a review. I remember when I first heard about this movie I thought it might have something to do with werewolves or something because of the title, silly me

The story is basically about two men who are sent to help a king track down a "beast" thats been killing off many of the kings people. This director's cut is only released in Canada for some reason and contains about 10 mins of extra footage. It's nothing too special, they were just cut for time, because the film was nearing the 3-hour mark.

I really enjoyed this film. Its beautifully shot, has great atmosphere, good action sequences and Mark Dacascos is da man! He's a very underrated actor in my opinion. Great martial arts skills. The plot for this film isn't too original, but it's not a typical "horror" film, especially since its taken place in the 18th century.

There aren't any real scares in this film, but it's obvious there really wasn't meant to be. It's mainly story driven, which causes the film to drag on a bit sometimes, especially since it's so long. When the action does pick up it becomes very entertaining. I liked how the slow-motion that we usually see in action scenes are sometimes used in typical scenes for this film. There was a lot more nudity than I expected which isn't a bad thing

I would have given the movie a higher rating, but it felt too long at times and slowed down a bit. It's still a very well done film either way. If you do get this on DVD try to get your hands on the Canadian 3-DVD version.

OVERALL
Cool horror film with beautiful shots and atmosphere. A little long, but enjoyable. Check this if you haven't already.

The Laughing Dead (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
A group goes on a trip to an archeological dig and end up with the living dead.

COMMENTS
With a title like "the Laughing Dead" one would assume that the movie wouldn't be good and that's exactly right. The movie sucked.

Starts off with a priest setting up a trip to an archeological dig and somehow a bunch of strangers join. They go to mexico for the dig and once they get there a bunch of weird stuff happens. The priest ends up getting possessed by some "god of death" or something and kills off some of the people in the trip. They are all then locked in a small motel with the guy.

I guess the director wanted to save the best for last or something, but towards the end of the film the people end up playing some kind of basketball game with the zombies . They really don't play bad in my opinion, but that's besides the point. The movie is very badly written and has many plot-holes.

We get to see the zombies later on in the film, but they are nothing special. They look really dumb and we don't get to see them much anyway. I don't know why this movie was even called "Laughing Dead". I expected a lot of laughing zombies or something when I first heard it.

The only thing I liked about this was the fact that it had a decent amount of cheesy gore and was fun to laugh at sometimes. I have no idea if this was meant to be somewhat of a comedy too, but most of the movie was funny. I guess I was just laughing at the plot and the acting.

Would have given the movie a lower-rating, but I liked some of the gore.

OVERALL
Hardly even a zombie film. The movie has a really silly plot and lots of the scenes are quite laughable. Don't bother checkin' this.

PLOT
Three girls go on a camping trip in the woods, but gets more than they bargained for when they meet up with a mother and her two twisted boys.

COMMENTS
Even though I haven't seen the movie I Spit On Your Grave, I know what the plot is about and apparently these two movies are very similar. From what I know from the I Spit movie is a woman gets raped a few times by a bunch of hicks in the country and gets left for dead. She then gets revenge on the guys and kills them very brutaly.

In this movie three women go on a camping trip in the woods and get captured by two siblings and their mother. They are then brought to an old house in the woods where they torture and rap one of the women while the others watch.

I don't want to give too much away, but eventually the women escape and get revenge on the siblings and their mother. When I rented the movie it said it had "Extreme Violence" on the cover. I can sorta see why they would say that since a guy gets his head chopped off and another gets an axe to the nutts, but there wasn't as much violence as I had expected.

The effects were a little cheap, but I expected that since it was a cheap 80s horror flick, I mean what more can you expect from the 80s? Anyway, the acting was good in some parts, but could have been better. The mother wasn't as twisted as I wanted her to be, which kinda dissapointed me. There werent any good scares in the film either.

What I liked most about the film though was the ending because they bring in a totally different character and it kinda leaves a question mark. The reason why I gave this movie a five was because I thought it was an "okay" film where it's not good and also not bad.

OVERALL
So, basically overall rent this movie if you've seen I Spit On Your Grave just to compare the two films. The rape scene in this movie isn't very graphic so if your a lady, don't worry about being desguisted.

Horror / Thriller

PLOT
A madman carrying a chainsaw is loose on a college campus.

COMMENTS
This is one of those cheesy 80s slasher movies that you either love or hate. It has a lot of sweet gore and the death scenes are quite interesting. You can't go wrong with a chainsaw.

The story is quite simple - there's a killer going around the campus killing off people with a chainsaw. The killer takes part of the victims body for reason's unknown, only to leave the rest for the police. A woman is sent in to investigate and find out who the killer is, while a student helps her. What could the killer want with the taken body parts? Hmmm..

I got to view the unrated version, so there was a lot of sweet cheesy gore. I think this is a bit of an unrated slasher flick to come out of the 80s. Sure it's nothing original, but it's fun to watch and that's what made me decide on a 6-rating.

The ending of the film is one of the funniest I've seen. It made really no sense what-so-ever, but it was just so funny that I didn't really care. The killer and story is very predictable, so I wasn't surprised by the climax of the film.

OVERALL
Small underrated cheesy slasher film. Lots of gore and a chainsaw killer. What more could you ask for? I don't expect many to like this, but if you watch it, do so with an open mind. This is for those die-hard 80s slasher fans.

Route 666 (product link)
Action/Adventure / Thriller

PLOT
US Marshals go out to the desert to pick up a witness who ran from the mob. They eventually have to go through the infamous Route 666 and end up finding trouble.

COMMENTS
This film doesn't come out 'till around Halloween, but I somehow got my hands on a screener copy. I had high hopes for this film, but was eventually let down with the end result. I thought the premise sounded rather cool, but whoever did the scripting did a very poor job at it, because the plot had many holes in it.

This movie had a lot of potential, but with poor scripting, it just fell apart. It had some interesting action scenes, but nothing spectacular. The marshals are really lousy shots. Anyway, the story behind Route 666 is just silly. In the film they said there was this massacre of four criminals on the road and whoever goes to the road and bleeds on it or something the four undead criminals return to feast on their blood. I think that just sounds silly.

In one scene, star Lou Diamond, gets in an accident and meets up with some indian chief, who had nothing to do with the plot what-so-ever. He only said a few "guiding" words to Lou and sent him on his way. That was just pointless.

The undead criminals looked pretty cool and there were a lot of fimilar faces in this film. It's sad to see so many somewhat famous actors in such a poor film. Oh well.

Would have given the film a lower rating, but it did have some interesting moments and a litle to make things go a little faster. I guess I was expecting too much from it and was just let down.

OVERALL
A film with potential, but had many plot-holes and a silly script. Nothing special, not really recommended.

Zombie 2 (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
A woman, a reporter, and a couple set sail to discover the truth behind a man's dissapearance.

COMMENTS
Well I was quite surprised by this film. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about it and I figured that it wouldn't be that good, but I actually enjoyed it. Had a lot of excellent rotting zombies and a very cool ending.

Starts off with this unknown boat washing ashore New York city. Couple cops sail out to check into it and discover that there's no one there, or so they thought. Eventually one of the dumbasses gets bit by a fat zombie that was stored in the bottom of the boat. The next day the daughter of the owner of the boat is called in to be asked questions. Eventually she gets let out, with unanswered questions about the where her father really is.

She meets up with this reporter guy and they make a deal to find out what happened to her father by going to the island that he was staying at. The hitch a ride with this couple on their vacation and the rest is, zombies, zombies zombies. Oh yeah baby!

Anyway, this is my third or so film by Lucio Fulci, also known as the "Godfather of Gore," so I knew what I was getting myself into, with all the gore and stuff, which there was plenty of. I thought the begining of the movie, with the boat coming to New York, was pretty damn cool, because we all know that there's gonna be a zombie inside there and since it's in a big city, it's gonna be one hell of a feast. We don't really get to see something like that in zombie films. It's mainly taken place in small towns and such.

This movie did mostly take place on an island, but some scenes were in New York. This film mainly focused on the whole voodoo-theory of how the zombies came about, instead of the usual goverment coverup or some radioactive explosion, like we've seen in other zombie films. I thought that's what made this movie somewhat original and more interesting.

There's really nothing much I didn't like about the film, aside from some bad acting, and a lack of zombie action, but a lot of movies could use more zombie action. I would have given it a higher rating, but I thought a 7 was good enough, because I liked it, but not as much as I could have. Still fun to watch the guys shot up some zombies though.

I guess if you're a zombie fan, then you won't be dissapointed with this. The main reason why I liked it so much was the ending. It was predictable, but still very cool to watch.

After the credits at the end of the film, there was a notice saying something about a barf bag being handed out to the people of the theater audience if they needed it. Man, those people must have been really weak-stomached, cuz sure the film is gory, but not to the point of throwing up. I thought that was rather funny.

OVERALL
A good film to watch if you're a zombie fan. I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet, or if you're into those gore flicks.

The Ring Virus (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
The korean remake of the first RING film.

COMMENTS
Okay, a lot of people didn't know there was a remake of the first RING film already, but like I said up top, this is the Korean remake of the original Japanese film. Looks like the Koreans beat us Americans to remaking the film, but does it really hold up to the original? I don't think so.

I thought this film was trying too hard to be creepy. The first 30 minutes just seems to go by really fast. All the events in the original RING kind of happened slow, but in this film everything seemed a bit rushed. In this remake they changed the story around a bit. I think that's where they went wrong. Sure it's good not for a remake not to be exactly like the original, but when you mess with an innovative story like the original RING has, you're just gonna end up screwing everything up.

In this movie the characters are changed around a bit. They changed the story behind the cursed tape as well. I just didn't get into this movie. Everytime I watched it I would reach the point of just passing out, because it was just boring. The acting wasn't bad, but the directing needed a lot more work.

The ending was a huge dissapointment. In the original RING, the ending was the best and creepiest part, but in this remake it was just lame. I didn't find it creepy at all. Like I said before, they were just trying way too hard to live up to the original.

I would have given the film a lower-rating, but it did have its interesting moments. It's not exactly a BAD film anyway. It's okay on its own, but as a remake, it just doesn't live up.

I'd like to see how we remake the film. I'm sure it'll be better than what the Koreans did with it. Hopefully they wont load it all up with computer generated images or anything. I dont know when the US remake is coming out, but I'm guessing maybe 2003 or so.

OVERALL
A rather disappointing remake. They tried too hard to make it live up to the original and failed.

The Phone (product link)
Horror / Mystery

PLOT
Mysterious deaths occur after recieving strange phone calls.

COMMENTS
I heard a lot of mixed reviews on this film before seeing it, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The movie was directed by the same guy that did Nightmare, which I thought was a total IKWYDLS ripoff, but at least he tries to put a little more originality in this film.

The movie is basically about a reporter-chick that did a case on men who sleep with underage girls. She gets many threatening phone calls, so she decides to change her phone number. Immediately after she recieves her new number she begins to get strange phone calls. She investigates the source of the calls and learns more than she bargained for.

This was a pretty decent film, but I thought the sub-plot of the stalker was rather pointless and confusing. It's like the director tried to mix two different films together - one being supernatural and another being a slasher. The supernatural elements all have to do with the calls and the things the girl sees after she recieves them. Then there's this sub-plot of a guy stalking and wanting to kill the girl, which I thought just made the story confusing. It's like the director can't get away from the cliched slasher genre.

There weren't any good scares, it was a bit predictable, and there were some scenes that were obviously ripped off from Ringu, but it kept my interest and I've seen a lot worse, so I figured a 6-rating was best fitting. The ending had an interesting twist, but it was predictable like the rest of the film.

I also liked the two-disc DVD that came with the movie. It actually contained deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes stuff, that is actually kind of rare when it comes to asian dvd releases. At least from the ones I've seen. Hopefully the next film the director puts together just sticks with one genre.

OVERALL
A decent Korean horror film. Kept my interest and had its moments, but don't expect to get any good scares out of this. Worth a check if you're into asian horror.

The Unholy (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT:
A demon called "the Unholy" has a thing for killing priests who sin.

COMMENTS:
Read a little about this movie before seeing it and from most of what I read it seemed pretty positive. It's an underrated supernatural film in my opinion.

The story is basically about these priests who are murdered by a demon who makes them sin then kills them. Later on in the movie it's revealed that a single priest would be chosen to battle the demon known as the Unholy.

The film has some good creepy moments and maybe a scare or two, but it does fall apart a bit towards the end compared to the pace of the rest of the movie. It seemed out of place, like it was a bit rushed and I think it would have been better if we didn't see the demon the way we did. They ended up showing the whole demon and it's somewhat silly looking.

Other than that the film has good acting, directing, a decent plot and special effects. You may even learn some interesting stuff about religion. Also has an average amount of blood and gore and even a little T&A. The story is good, but predictable, especially at the end. I would have given the movie a lower-rating, but I really felt that it was a good movie, despite the ending.

OVERALL:
An underrated supernatural film. Check this if you're looking for something a little different than the regular horror film.

Battle Royale (product link)
Horror / Thriller

PLOT
Teens have pretty much taken over and the adults are sick of it. The adults make a new law where the kids are forced onto an island to kill each other, until ONE is left standing. Let the game begin!

COMMENTS
This has to be one of the best films I've ever seen. It was enetertaining from the start. I liked how it tackled some things like trust, friendship and love when put in that situation with so many fellow peers.

The plot is very innovative - Teens have practically taken over the schools and adults are mocked by them. The adults have lost control so they form this law where certain classes are forced to go into this game of battle to the death called Battle Royale. The teens are put on a deserted island where each one has to fend off against others in order to be the last person standing, which then wins their freedom home.

Judging from the plot there is obviously a lot of death. It was interesting to see how each one of those teens would come up with a way to kill one another. Some were lucky to have guns while others weren't so lucky and had object likes a trash lid and binoculars. A movie like this wouldn't last in the US because of the stupid MPAA and shit. What a waste that is, because this is truly an entertaining film that can't be too far from the truth considering we have a lot of these reality shows where people are forced to survive.

The fact that these are mere teens killing each other makes the film controversal, but also very interesting. You don't see that kinda stuff often. You have to admire the fact that the director would actually have the guts to put out a film like this, but apparently it works well since it was #1 at the Japanese Box Office for three weeks.

The acting was very well done and so was the directing. I noticed in most parts of the film it was during the night, which made things a lot more intense. Certain of the teens played special rolls like, you have the badass and then you have the wussy guy. I really wasn't dissapointed by any of the film aside from the fact that I couldn't exactly make out everything that was said because of the subtitling on the video. I still got pretty much everything down though.

I would have given the movie a higher rating, but I'm really picky when it comes to 10-ratings and this film came very close to getting one. I think this movie is a MUST for anyone who is tired of the boring shit the MPAA hands out here in America.

OVERALL
Has to be one of the best films I've ever seen. Very innovative and controversal. You have got to see this movie.

Versus (product link)
Martial Arts / Horror

PLOT:
A portal in the "forest of resurrection" makes the dead come back to life and grants great power to those who can open the gate to the other side.

REVIEW:
I remember reading about this movie over at aint it cool news a while back and thinking that it sounded very cool. I never once thought that I'd be able to get my hands on it, but I'm sure as hell glad that I did, cuz this movie kicks ass. I was going to give it a 10-rating, but decide to just go for a 9 instead, because I'm very picky with giving out tens, but this is one of the only movies that came so close to getting one.

This movie is pretty much perfect in every way. It has zombies, great martial arts fighting, lots of wicked guns, cool characters and a shit load of blood and gore. The only thing this movie doesn't have is nudity, which isn't bad because nudity usually ruins a film. American movie-makers should take notes from this japanese film. The zombies were unique. They were able to use guns and also able to jump. That's what made the film all the more original and they were really hard to kill.

The action sequences in this movie were amazing. There was this one zombie killing scene that lasted a good 10 to 15 minutes; Guys were just blasting away at the zombies and at each other. Gotta love it.

I don't wanna give away too much of the story, but it's basically where these mob guys are set to meet with two recently escaped convicts at a forest. They finally meet and end up fighting each other because they seriously don't get along. Next thing you know it, one of the mob guys turns into a zombie and all hell breaks loose. The best thing is the mob guys used the forest to bury their past victims, so now they gotta deal with all those dead guys too.

This film isn't strictly just a zombie movie. There are supernatural elements too it that also kind of turns it into a fantasy film. The forest is able to open the gate to the other side to grant great power. That's not necessarily a bad thing because it makes the movie even more interesting. I enjoyed every minute of this. It's two hours of pure enjoyment. The acting was good, there was a little humor here and there to lighten up the mood and the directing was very well done. There were many slow and face-paced shots when needed.

This film is like a John Woo movie with zombies. Some parts of the film reminded me of many japanese animes because of some of the fighting and the way they would spit out all this blood from their mouths. I'm going to add this movie to my favorite films list. I wasn't dissapointed by anything in this movie. I thought that maybe it would be lame towards the end, but was happy to see that even the ending is good.

OVERALL
One of the best films I've ever seen. Two hours of pure entertainment. Has some sweet ass action sequences with loads of gore. If you're a fan of zombies and John Woo action films, see this!!

Windstruck (product link)
Comedy / Romance

I've posted about this movie before, but I thought I'd re-post it with...more info. I got a hold of the director's cut thanks to the guys at HKFlix, which is seemingly only a few minutes longer (according to the running time). This is the third film by My Sassy Girl director Jae-young Kwak. He made a romantic drama prior to this called The Classic, which was another good film, but didn't have the cute humor that Sassy Girl did. It seems that he tried to emulate some of the feel of Sassy Girl with this movie, but does it work? It some ways yes.

The movie stars Ji-hyun Jun, who you may remember as the lead chick in Sassy. She plays a very similar character in this film (overbearing; rude), but this time she's a police officer. It starts off with her mistakenly arresting the wrong guy (Hyuk Jang - Volcano High) after a woman gets her pursed snatched. Of course that's not the last they see of each other, as they become friends and more-so as the film progresses.

Although the movie tries to be another Sassy Girl, it didn't quite capture the feel and humor. Despite that, being a fan of Sassy and Jae-young Kwak work as a talented writer/director, I have to give the film a solid 8/10. It falls in the category as another successful romantic comedy from South Korea (in my opinion).

The Evil Dead (product link)
Horror / Thriller

A group of friends fight for their lives against the evil spirits of the forest.

COMMENTS
Before director Sam Raimi tackled the $130-million dollar web-slingin' Spider-Man, he was just a man with a dream, a camera, and a group of friends. Before Evil Dead, there was Within the Woods -- a short 30-minute pilot that featured Bruce Campbell as a man who becomes possessed by evil spirits and murders his fellow comrades in a secluded cabin. The film was made with a $1,600 budget and Sam hoped to strike interest from possibly investors. He succeeded and collected an estimated $375,000 to shoot The Evil Dead. I saw this movie many years ago after doing research online for horror flicks I hadn't seen. I rented this flick the first chance I got and I've enjoyed it since, even after countless viewings, it never gets old and the reactions from those who I show it to always makes the experience worthwhile. The film is a cult hit amongst horror fans and turned the Ash character into an icon.

For those of you who may not have seen this (*slap*), the story follows four friends as they vacation at a small secluded cabin deep in the woods. Once there it's apparent that the cabin was once inhabited as some items were left over, one of which is an old book called "The Necronomicon" A.K.A. "Book of the Dead". Naturally some of the pages are read aloud, and well, you can guess what happens next. Thus begins all the gore and mayhem that is The Evil Dead. This is a film that's known to those that may have seen it at the theaters to be one of the "scariest films ever made". Next to the Exorcist, I'm sure, but they were right about one thing -- it is a film that will stay in your mind after the first viewing.

Next to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre films and the Friday the 13th series, the Evil Dead trilogy is one of the most copied themes in the genre to-date. Many movies over the years were inspired by this film and its sequels and I don't blame them. Hell, they're even doing a remake. I suppose there's just something about an eerie abandoned cabin in the woods that really sucks people in. This film is the darker of the three films and some say the "scariest" as well. You'll later see in the next two films that the tone is lightened and the action is kicked up a notch, but I'll get to those in my other reviews.

OVERALL
The darker film of the three and possibly also the scariest. A good movie that every horror fan must view at least once in their lifetime.

Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn (product link)
Horror / Thriller

Ash returns in this sequel that what some may consider to be a remake of the first film.

COMMENTS
Six years after the success of the first film, Sam Raimi returns with a bigger wallet (thanks to more investors) in the sequel to the infamous Evil Dead. Upon first viewing one would think that the story doesn't make sense since the central character "Ash" returns to the cabin with his girlfriend unknowing of the events in the first. It's as if the first film never happened. Well apparently Sam couldn't get the rights to the original, so since he couldn't recap the intro he ended up having to shoot a new begining the way it was originally intended. Thanks to more know-how and a bigger budget, Sam was finally able to achieve what he set out for. Thus fans are left scratching their heads as to whether the film is a remake or a sequel. I personally consider it to be both (if that's even possible). Regardless it's still my favorite of the trilogy and with good reason.

In this film the once-cowardly Ash of the first film is now a wise-crackin' hero with a badass chainsaw to replace his hand (which he cut off due to it being possessed) and a double-barrel shotgun in the other. The deadites don't stand a chance now. We're also introduced to a more comedic tone to the film, compared to the more serious tone of the first. So let’s brush over the story this time 'round. Unlike the first movie, it starts off with only two characters -- Ash and his girlfriend. The movie really kicks into gear very early on, as within the first 15 minutes the girlfriend dies; re-animates; and Ash attempts to flee from the demonic spirits that chases him around the woods and cabin. Of course we're introduced to four other characters later on that also attempt to fend off against the deadites.

So in the first movie the group find the Necronomicon and read it aloud, which unleashes the spirits, so how do they get released in this film? Well Ash discovers an old tape recorder laying about and plays it, which naturally has some professor-type reading passages from the book and then uh-oh. You really can't go wrong here, with its gallons of blood, silly humor, badass hero, and gore-galore. Evil Dead 2 definitely ranks high among horror fans lists (mine included).

OVERALL
A brainless fun ride from start to finish. Another MUST if you're a horror fan.
