Bio: I like Asian film more than is good for me. Golden Harvest is good, but Shaw Brothers holds a special attraction, particularly Chang Cheh, with Ti Lung or the Venoms, or Lau Kar Leung, with or without his brothers. I'm learning more about South Korea, and find it the best cinema of the past two decades. Thai film is entertaining, but I don't have the critical apparatus to go beyond "That elbow strike was cool!"

New Police Story (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Those expecting a continuation of the highly successful "Police Story" series will feel short-changed, but this is a pretty good film if one can get past those genre expectations. It has much more in common with "Crime Story", also from Jackie Chan, than the "Police Story" series.
Chan plays a veteran hotshot police detective whose bravado led to the death of his previous team and his own descent into shame and abject alcoholism. Now he finds himself facing the same master criminals with a new, smaller group.
Nicholas Tse is a less dominant presence than Jackie Chan, and the other co-stars are less prominent still. That is the weakness of much late-period Jackie Chan cinema: he is much too large an eminence for the balance of the films. When the spotlight leaves him, it finds very little of interest.

I agree, JC carried this film. However it was a good police drama.
I love this movie! And you're right, don't think of it as PS flick. Cuz in many ways it's not. It is however, better than the pile that is First Strike!
After Police Story 4 (first strike) we did not really need to reboot the franshice. The film downfalls due to it's cliche buddy cop films & no thrill attitudes among the stars.
Drunken Master (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a very great film. If one thinks of the quintessential early-stage Jackie Chan film, this is it, although it is much better than all but a handful of his work from that period. He plays the young Wong Fei Hung as a mischievous boy forced to grow into his great potential. The training sequences and stunts are amazingly good.
Once Upon A Time In America (product link) Crime / Drama Sergio Leone made at least three masterpieces: "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly", "Once Upon A Time In The West", and this. This is better than the others--more psychologically deep, more excellently scored, and much, much better acted. In its initial U.S. release, this great film was absolutely castrated: restructured into a much shorter chronological sequence rather than moving back and forth in time, and leaving out the introductions, youth, adulthood, and deaths of important characters.
This is not a film to approach literally: it is Noodles Aaronson's (Robert De Niro's character) story told as he knows it, remembers it, or thinks it was. I can't say what "really" happened. Neither can Noodles. Do not step away from the picture or turn it off before the final image: it is important. I think I may know what really happened, but maybe not.

Love the childhood part. Like the 1933 part. Hate the 1968 part. To etheral and artsy for its own good. It pains me to say this, but Leone dropped the ball on this one!
No & yes. The film does have it's unforgettable moments but due to the fact I felt a little short handed by the ending. I felt it ended when they crashed the car.
And do not forget to mention Leone's " Duck, You Sucker" which is originally apart of his "American trilogy". I agree with your review. This is one of those films that will stay with the viewer forever.
The Fearless Hyena Collection [2-Disc Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Part 1 is a first-rate bildungsroman-train hard and take revenge story, showing Jackie Chan's genius-level originality and flexibility. Part 2 is an insulting hodgepodge of outtakes compiled by producer-director Lo Wei to cash in on the superstar he had driven away. There's a reason Jackie Chan left these bits out of the first movie: they're not good enough.

5 stars for Fearless Hyena 1. But for the whole collection it's just not worth it if the second film is there.
Lo Wei was pissed Jackie finally left and used everything he could find from Jackies earlier four films. Do yourself a favor and never watch the second side.
Danny The Dog (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure First rate English language work from Jet Li. He had to wait for French producers filming in Glasgow. He plays a mentally-stunted physical adept working as an enforcer for a vile loan shark (played by Bob Hoskins), isolated from civilization and adult thought until he is drawn into normal life and forced to fight to protect his new family. The action has a real-world immediacy and practicality I have seen in none of Li's previous work, and the quality of his co-stars is much higher than what he has previously endured in the West.

Horrible, self-indugled piece of butt. Completely boring with an incredulous story. The list goes on.
Dead Or Alive: Final (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure Riki Takeuchi and Sho Aikawa have more or less switched characters from the first "Dead Or Alive", and there is, if anything, even less connection to real world physics, anatomy, or storytelling. What can Takashi Miike do to exceed the pure energy of the first two films? This is the answer: emoting, constant action, sight gags, and dick jokes. I don't think it's actually any good, but I love it anyway.

Didn't care for this one either. The ending was funny but overall a stupid cyber punk film.
yea, this one was really out there and I didn't like everything about the film, but it was still fun. The image of a bullet being shot into a L-shaped pipe resulting in a dead bird will stick with me forever.
Dead Or Alive 2 (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime Riki Takeuchi and Sho Aikawa face each other again after the gale force which was "Dead Or Alive (1)." They are different characters in a very different world from the first film, but they both have their emoting, fighting, and shooting amped up to 12.5. There is not one believable event in the whole film, and it doesn't matter. Takashi Miike takes us on a wild voyage into his twisted mind, and it is good.

Kagemusha: The Shadow Warrior (product link) Drama / War This is a brilliant, heartfelt, perfectly realized tale of unavoidable loss. Tatsuya Nakadai, who was not Kurosawa's first choice to star (Shintaro Katsu, whom I cannot imagine giving such a performance, walked off the set), plays the dual role of the great late 16th Century warlord Takeda Shingen and a lowly thief who is his perfect double. When the warlord is severely wounded, the double is tasked with keeping the clan's spirits up by pretending to be the great lord. Without Shingen's wisdom to preserve it, the clan is thrown into the savage warfare of the era.

Extremely slow paced and the story went nowhere. Not the worst thing I've even seen but very horrid.
Shaolin Prince (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Frenetic fun with more wirework than is to some people's taste. The choreography is lovely, the plot moves along at a gallop, and the comedic passages with the insane monks are not enough to make me think less of this delightful film.
Hey, it has Ti Lung. That's enough to counteract a large number of flaws.
The Wu Tang Clan Presents Kung Fu Series #1 [5-Disc Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is not rated a full four stars not because of the intrinsic quality of the five films, but because of the low priced availability of flicks which might otherwise be unavailable. All five films are the English dubs, and four--all but "Fists of Legend 2," which is by far the least enjoyable--are pan-and-scanned to a 4x3 format. With the one clear exception, these are entertaining and fun.

Shaolin Chastity was good but all else was wretched and cruel to the optics. Avoid like the plague peoples! :)
Martyrs (product link) Horror / Thriller This film is not for everybody. It may not even be for me, but it is extremely well made and without question the most horrifyingly violent film I have ever seen. I have no intention of giving away the REAL plot, but anyone who chooses to watch it knows the initial premise. An adult woman who escaped from her torturers as a child takes a friend along with her when she seeks vengeance. It would appear that she does find her torturers. After that, things become more complicated and more horrifying.
If one can tolerate the extremity of the violence and pain depicted in "Martyrs", it is possible a lesson may be learned: it may be something about the psychological/moral/theological/mystical results of torture, or it may be nothing more than "I am NEVER going to France, as long as I live. What's WRONG with those people!?" I'm undecided.

I was really looking forward to this film, but I hated it. I think the violence was totally pointless and mean-spirited and I don't think there was a "real plot" anywhere.
This is a troubling film. While some could dismiss Takashi Miike's previous "Full Metal Yakuza," "Ichi the Killer" and other films as cartoonish winks at the audience, his intentions are quite serious here. Izo Okada was a real-life money-strapped ronin recruited into the pro-Meiji Restoration Hitokiri killers by Takechi Hanpeita. The same man was portrayed by Shintaro Katsu in Gosha's "Hitokiri" (1969). Crucified for the many murders he had committed, Izo is catapulted through time and place as Miike explores the vital and unkillable spirit of aggression he sees underlying Japanese and World history. Characters are sliced and killed, and except for Izo himself they remain dead - graphically so. Miike demonstrates not only the brutality of war but the venality of its proponents - much below the moral level to consign young souls to slaughter.
If the viewer is averse to extreme violence, he should stay away.

kinda odd, I found Ichi to be grand but yet I found this film to nihilistic and mindless. I guess I didn't get this movie!
Ichi The Killer (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure This is a polarizing film. Many believe it is exploitative violence with no other purpose, and it has no effect on them but occasioning disgust. Some believe the same, and they revel in the gore. Some of us believe it has a non-salacious purpose: that it is an insightful exploration of two degenerates whose minds have been warped by their upbringing and environment.
No one can be forced to understand or appreciate a work of art, and any piece's value may remain invisible to certain viewers--that does not indicate that it is not art or has no value--merely that it is not intelligible to those people. I get nothing from Robert Rauschenberg or Andy Warhol. Others get quite a bit. My incomprehension does not invalidate their insights.

absolutely no replay value at all, sick movie in a boring way. The japanese can do better than this, instead of a goofy movie, they should try and revive the martial arts genre with honor instead of making films of disgrace.
Azumi (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure For those who find Kitamura's films too over the top and unrealistic, this is about as accessible as he gets--a coherent plot with some likeable characters. For those who like it best when Kitamura is outrageously over the top, he goes quite far enough! In this film, more than many of his others, he handles the stretches between extreme action sequences very competently.
If you don't usually enjoy Kitamura, you'll probably like this anyway.
If you do usually enjoy Kitamura, you will find this entirely up to his standards.

Soo (product link) Drama / Action/Adventure I enjoyed this thoroughly but must hold off on giving it 5*, because several plot points are very unclear:
[Significant Spoilers Here.]
What was the villains' intent? Who was really their target? Do any know how to fire a gun accurately? Was Tae-jin any part of the criminal plot? Most importantly, If Tae-jin was a police officer in South Korea, why was it so difficult for the private investigator to locate him?
Executive Koala (product link) Horror / Comedy (There are some comments approaching spoilers a bit further into the review.)
The costumes and acting are a little bit better than in the same director's "The Calamari Wrestler," but the spiritual/theological/karmic message is worse developed and explained than in that film. After watching the film, many practical questions remain: what really happened in the hero's past? Who was conspiring against him, who were his allies, and - most of all - were the people in his home village telling the truth or were they part of someone else's plot? Not only are the answers not given, it appears the writer and director had no clear answer themselves.

I have no idea why people say EXECUTIVE KOALA is hard to understand. Almost everything is explained, bluntly, and the story is pretty linear. Aside from being unfinished, this movie is pretty simple.
I am an American, so I imagine I am supposed to resent this film, in which the Americans are big, clumsy, casually brutal and most intentionally so as well. I don't. This is a beautiful, heartwarming and tragic film all at once. The film isn't at all what I was expecting.
Advance word made me think the story would be about the discovery and destruction of a Korean Brigadoon. In fact, there is nothing mystical about the town of Dongmakgol: it is just a remote village not yet involved in the Korean War, populated by decent people. The North and South Korean soldiers who find their way to Dongmakgol are reluctant warriors crippled by their experiences, and (mostly) determined to spare the people of the village from the casual obliteration declared its fate.
I was very pleased to find that the main American character, a crashed naval aviator, is as decent a person as his saviors in Dongmakgol, and doubly happy that he was played by a very competent actor, rather than the appallingly bad white stock villains one finds in so many east Asian films. Unfortunately, the other Americans, in smaller roles, are every bit as villainous as, if still rather better acted than, the evil whitefaces one sees so often.
Blood Brothers [2007] (product link) Triad / Drama [Warning: contains spoilers.] The first 75% of the film seemed to be leading toward the lead character, played by Daniel Wu, coming to realize the unacceptable price of being a Shanghai Triad. But then the ending is an unbelievable shootout in which he kills everyone but the final villain, and the villain's gunman can't hit him with thousands of close range shots.
I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK (product link) Drama / Romance One's enjoyment of this is dependent on one's ability either to tell reality from fantasy or to accept the bizarre world of this film's heroine. I'm leaning toward simply accepting her world: the male protagonist seems to both enter the heroine's world and live ever outside it. Perhaps the film's point of view is the heroine's view from outside of herself... I don't know. This is less satisfying than the director's previous films, but it is still quite good.

This movie is just plain silly. But maybe I couldn't grasp it because I lack your insightful brilliance.
Zatoichi [2003] (product link) Drama / Swordplay/Sword(s) This is a terrifically entertaining film, but I can understand why some would be put off by Takeshi Kitano's laid-back to the point of coma performance and some abrupt shifts of tone. I still can't reconcile the musical ending with the rest of the film. The project gains some merit from Mr. Kitano's consultation with Shintaro Katsu's survivors and his awareness of the shadow Mr. Katsu still casts.
This isn't a continuation of, or in competition with, the original series. It is itself, and it is quite pleasing.
Sometimes, when something's been done to death, it's worth taking a chance at doing it completely differently. And I think this risk paid off here with the musical numbers, etc. To my surprise...
Dragon Tiger Gate (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This doesn't do a whole lot for me. Donnie Yen's martial arts performance is good, despite being hampered by a bizarre peekaboo hairstyle. Nicholas Tse, despite a more normal hairstyle, fights adequately, but nowhere hear Yen's level. Shawn Yue, in a wig (I hope it's a wig) more or less as foolish as Yen's, isn't given much to do. The plot is much thinner than the martial arts choreography.
No, this movie is a classic. I think the hairstyle was the comicbook's illusion, I believe. I belive this movie is four stars because they pulled the epic storyline off well, especially the martial arts scene at the end. I have to disagree. It's worth it.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Chocolate" must not be judged as an attempt to duplicate Tony Jaa. It is not, and doesn't try to be. It is a showcase for the extremely good fighter Jeeja Yanin/Yanin Vismitananda, who was 23-24 when the film was made but looks much younger. She doesn't have the raw force of Tony Jaa, but very much of his speed and good technique. The plot is not the selling point, but this is a very serviceable story of an autistic physical savant fighting to afford her mother's medical care, coming into contact with Thai and Japanese gangsters.
This isn't like anything else: it does a fine job of being itself, and I enjoyed it tremendously.
Ashes Of Time (product link) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Art If one approaches "Ashes of Time" as a martial arts film, it is nothing. The editing and cinematography deny the viewer the thrill of a sequential battle from beginning to end. Instead of visceral thrill, this offers a depressive meditation on beauty, lost time, ego and desire. You would have to be far more perceptive than I to perceive much of Wong Kar Wai's intention on a first viewing, but the film draws me back, sometimes years later, to see it again and feel a delicate reverie on time which can never be regained.
I'm going to put it back in the DVD player again right now.

Why do so many people insist that Wong Kar Wai requires heightened cognition to enjoy. Depressive meditation sound like yet another euphemism for slow and boring.
Hero [2002] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I need more stars! This is one of the handful of most visually beautiful films ever made, with each color scheme perfectly coordinated, set dressed and filmed. The plot is vey nearly on the same level, as is the acting. Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, and Maggie Cheung give as good performances as they have ever offered (and there are many great ones to consider from Leung and Cheung--they are truly great actors).
To the degree there is any criticism of "Hero," the plot can be construed as an apologia for a brutal central dictatorship: "Only one under Heaven." This is particularly troublesome coming from a director of Zhang Yimou's credentials--he made his name on small films delving the anguish of the peasant class under the Communist government. Is this a surrender to the central committee? I don't know, but this film's artistry forgives many faults.

can't agree. Art films has and always will remain incoherent in my thoughts. Meaningless poetry and colorful crap does not justify brilliance.
Yet another film where people are inexplicably dazzled by silly color schemes and gimmicky camera tricks. The excessive wire work is also another strike against an insanely overrated movie.
I'd like to give this 5 stars for the acting and cinematography, but the martial arts are most impressive to viewers who haven't seen the best of real Wuxia action. This is a wonderful, relatively painless introduction of the heroic Chinese errant swordsman genre, but most of what Western critics praised as originality is a careful duplication of the genre norms - which were established and perfected more than 40 years previously. As far as the fighting goes, Michelle Yeoh fills her role extremely well, with a grace far beyond the other stars. Chow Yun Fat is a very fine actor who was wise enough to stay out of Wuxia action before this film. Zhang Ziyi may be an acquired taste: I found her lovely and charming, although my Western sensibilities find her character's behavior unforgivable. Although she is quite graceful, Michelle Yeoh eclipses her in all aspects of fighting. It was very pleasing to see the wonderful Cheng Pei Pei in the genre that made her a star.

There is nothing special about this film. Just a long, boring self-indulged piece of garbage with flowy art to stimulate the mind. Whoopee-doodles. Cry me a river. :p
While I agree that it is rather humorous to see Western critics call it original, I would still give the film 5 stars as I feel its a distillation of many of the best elements of the Wuxia pian. Including the wirework.
Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 (product link) Crime / Thriller The heroine is unbelievably resolute, the villains unbelievably vicious and ugly, and the plotline only vaguely related to reality, but this is probably the most exhilarating of the "Female Convict 701" series. I first saw it without having seen nos. 1, 3 and 4 of the series, and it held up very well; watching it as part of the series, it is much better.
War (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts I wanted to see Jet Li and Jason Statham in another film after the disappointing "The One," and here they are. There is virtually no martial art action - particularly between the two stars who are most popular for what they can do with their bodies. The film is a huge letdown for anyone who insists on what is expected. If one can get past that, this is a reasonably satisfying action/Yakuza/Triad/International Hitman/FBI thriller. London and Beijing are just a little bit far to look when casting American action figures.
What exactly makes this movie worse than Azumi, a movie you rated at 4.5 stars? Statham and Li are certainly much more competent than Aya Ueto, and the story is no more derivative. I got exactly what I expected.
Iron Monkey [1993] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
This is an exhilarating action ride with brilliant choreography by the Yuen Clan and a cast carefully selected to be able to perform perfectly. Donnie Yen, as Wong Kei Ying, is his athletic self - submerging himself in the role more successfully than he often does; Yu Rongguang, as Dr. Yang/Iron Monkey, may tend to fade slightly in Donnie Yen's more dynamic presence, but he is a superb martial artist. Tsang Tse-Man, as the young Wong Fei-Hung, is a delightfully agile performer who shines even in Mr. Yen's presence. Yuen Shun-Yi, the director's brother and a formidable martial artist himself, plays Master Fox, the chief of police, in a way completely different from the terrifying villains he previously embodied so well.
I have to give this *****, because it is executed at a level beyond the ****1/2 films I have rated - but it is not really as monumental a film as most others I have placed in this rarified category. It's not "fine art," but an action flick that is just a hell of a lot of fun.

One could definately argue that this is not a 5 star film for whatever reason whether its the excessive wirework, comparisons to other films, or even Donnie Yen, but I think it very entertaining and thats what really counts in the end.
The presence of the insufferably egotistical Mr. Yen alone is enough to lower any rating for this film. The amount of wire work is ridiculous, even considering the previous "standards" set by the Yuen family.
Iron Monkey 2 [1978] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This film has no connection to Chen Kuan Tai's previous "The Iron Monkey," and is a lesser effort than that good movie - but it is a fairly good picture if one thinks of it as a small, independent action flick. Chen Kuan Tai's acting is nothing special - but his action is very special indeed.

This force of nature destroys the evil that he sees, along with some of the good. The series is excellent from start to finish, and both more comprehensible and more socially responsible than the dubbed, re-edited "Shogun Assassin" and "Lightning Sword of Death".
It's not the obscenity of violence, but violence as a response to the obscenity of corruption.

Dude, that was an excellent insight on a superb series. Lone Wolf is one of those memorable characters that deserves his standing in cinema history.
Fist Of Legend (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a very fine film, capturing Jet Li and fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping at or near their personal bests. As great as the original "Fist of Fury"/"Chinese Connection" was, this is much better written and placed in the real world, i.e., SOME Japanese are subhuman creatures, rather than ALL. Yasuaki Kurata gives a well-modulated role as an honorable Japanese of considerable martial arts ability.
This movie is quite simply not as good as the original, a highly influential film for this genre. Furthermore, I don't remember any discourse in the original indicating ALL Japanese are subhuman. This film is merely a copy of a classic, nothing more.
Spirited Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Some may come to this film seeking an early performance by Tony Jaa, and they may be disappointed by the brevity of his role. They should keep an open mind and recognize that this is a vehicle for Panna Rittikrai, Tony Jaa's mentor and trainer. He made dozens of low budget, minimally scripted films from the late '70s into the '90s. Many are so amateurishly plotted and acted as to be of little interest, but Rittikrai's athleticism, physical courage, and entertaining choreography are usually worthwhile.
"Spirited Killer" is better acted than most of his films--although that is very faint praise--but it is far better plotted and written. While many of Rittikrai's starring films are too amateurish for most Western viewers, this should hold the attention of anyone seeking Tony Jaa's influences and lineage.

Yueh Hua was never his equal in physical skills, but he is a terrifically talented actor who seems at home in swordplay drama. Both gentlemen made this a completely watchable action drama.

While I recognize the substance of these criticisms, I think it is a very enjoyable psychological thriller (with plenty of blood, nonetheless) carried along by the lead actress's outstanding performance. If one can accept the particular point of view of the narrative, rather than expecting an objective account of events, this is a very rewarding film.
