Shaolin Prince (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Frenetic fun with more wirework than is to some people's taste. The choreography is lovely, the plot moves along at a gallop, and the comedic passages with the insane monks are not enough to make me think less of this delightful film.
Hey, it has Ti Lung. That's enough to counteract a large number of flaws.
Shaolin Kung Fu Mystagogue (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This old classic is one of the films with the famous flying guillotine-like weapons. Referred to as "The Bloody Birds", Chang Yi's weapons of death are really the star here.
The production values are definitely on the low end, however the actors more than make up for that. There's the usual convoluted plot, with Shaolin once again at the center. Carter Wong, Chang Yi, Kam Kong, and the lovely Hsu Feng all make this little gem worth repeated viewings.
Yellow River Fighter (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Film has quite an epic feel at times. Swordplay throughout is top notch and the main character is perfect for the role--well acted. His reluctantly gained partner adds some comedy element. The plot--I was half guessing on my first version with no subtitles--is a little far fetched but sits with the warring factions of the era and their desire to defeat rival clans. That said, I really enjoyed the film, and it is one of those I keep pulling out to watch again. Recommended.
The acting by performers who are martial artists first and actors second is a very small flaw. The action choreography and very real abilities of the performers far outweigh the unexceptional script.
You know, I hate this movie, yet I've seen it 12 times now. What the hell is wrong with me? Just think in 30 years this film will be considered an absurd cult classic of some sort, just like all the shit in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. But for now, it can only be liked by idle-minded pederasts.
This film deserves a tiny fraction of credibility due to one man who died after the making of this bigoted, unethical piece of Nazi trash, and that is Raul Julia. Damn, his superb acting just consummately overshadows this film's abysmal structure of stupidity. Too bad really, his very existence almost makes up for this...this ASS, but it's not enough.
Where "Street Fighter" ('94) ultimately fails is in just about everything, from its horrible action, its ridiculous pacing, suck ass acting (except Raul Julia and, for some weird reason, the Russian guy called Zangief--dude, he was funny), poor and ignorant casting--for example the casting of a Samoan to play a Japanese sumo wrestler (E. Honda is not a Samoan name, f@#$ers)--and so forth. And the list perpetuates until my head explodes.
The success of this film is the chick who played Chun Li. UGH SHE'S HOT! And that's about it.
I hate this movie and yet I continue to watch it over and over again. KILL ME, NOW!!!!!!! :)

All copies and negatives should be destroyed so Raul Julia can rest in peace! As Tigerbloodclaw put it, no stars!
How many ingredients does this how have to be a bomb before the filming ever started. A movie based on a video game and Van Damme is enough for me. Ugh!
Drunken Master (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a very great film. If one thinks of the quintessential early-stage Jackie Chan film, this is it, although it is much better than all but a handful of his work from that period. He plays the young Wong Fei Hung as a mischievous boy forced to grow into his great potential. The training sequences and stunts are amazingly good.
Fearless [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
He he he he ha ha! Slave strikes again! Apparently he does not care for overhyped kung fu films of today 'cause they are ridiculously ludicrous. Oh sure, you could refute me with this unintelligible comment: "A 2 1/2 rating? But the film had great kung fu action." Great kung fu action does not justify a great film. You know it and I know it. Even a mentally handicapped person knows it. This is just another example as to why kung fu films have sucked and that is due to its self-absorbed art film idiocy and uninteresting story about some moron who learns about humility, narcissism, and hypocrisy throughout his existence due to a precarious personality issue and then becomes a Chinese patriot. God!
Maybe it's me--maybe I just get sick of new movies being cranked out the butthole to only reveal the same old shit. The stories and conceptions for today's kung fu films are soooooo worn out that this could have been an unintentional remake of a movie from the 70's or 80's; but who knows, really. To be perfectly honest, I think you're just looking for any excuse to give films like this any credibility when in truth you are in a state of denial.
The kung fu action was okay. JUST OKAY! I'll always have issues with wirework unless it fits with a film's level of insanity and/or absurdity, like "Tai Chi Master" or "Iron Monkey". But with a film like "Fearless" that's supposed to be consistent and well told (HA!), no wirework is required. It does not work. As far as the movements of the actors go, it feels a bit sloppy, but overall it's...eh, nice.
Probably the main reason why I didn't like this film is because of Jet Li. He is just not a convincing bad-ass. His martial art skills are 99% consummate but his screen presence is just weak. He's just a sissy Mary. The only films I've ever liked with him were "Tai Chi Master", "Fist Of Legend", "Martial Arts Of Shaolin", and for some odd reason "My Father Is A Hero". And perhaps "Once Upon A Time In China" 1-3, only because I like Tsui Hark films.
If you liked this film, fine. I don't care. But in the words of a great reviewer: "Nothing special here." It's just another everyday ordinary kung fu movie. Whoopee-do. Now I await your inflictions with elation.
AND THE ACTING WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!

You know that I couldn't agree more! This garbage was just recycled rerun stuff. I don't understand how so many people can hold this movie in such high regards when it is nothing more than average.
Gotta disagree my friend. Frankly Jet does some of his finest acting here. I agree that we have seen better martial arts action, but I enjoyed this for the good acting performances from Jet and the whole cast!
Shaolin Intruders (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Another great Shaw film from the later years. Fighting Shaolin Abbots and 16 guys on wires at the same time equals pure awesome on the action scale.
You've got smart and funny characters, a cool setting, great great great action, a crystal clear image, and an interesting story.
This might not be one of the biggest named titles to hear about coming from Shaws, but it would be a shame not to give it a try and find an amazing gem of a movie.

Going out on a limb here.... I liked it even though Tang Chia is way too over-spazmodic with his directing style.
4 Film Favorites: Martial Arts [4-Movie Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Of the four films, I have only watched "The Bloody Fists". This film is spectacular. I first saw this movie when I was a young man in Africa before coming to the US. For me, Chan Sing and Henry Yu Yung are some of the best in the kung fu genre. The style of fighting is so beautiful. The duel in the ring with the Japanese when H.Y. Yung gets in is very enjoyable to watch. And of course the final battle on the beach with the fugitive (Chan Sing) taking it to the bad Japanese is memorable. I also like the plot of the film when the village people refused to sell the herb to the wicked Japanese. This shows that when one is determined to stand up to bullies, the result can be quite refreshing. This film is a MUST-watch.

This is a worthy set of fu flix. Worth it for Militant Eagle alone. Great bundle for a good price.
Weeeeee, I'm having fun dogging films that are pretentious and overrated.
Yes, another one of those "artsy fartsy" films where people cry over this film's ridiculous cinematography and say, "What brilliance! What flair. Holy crap, I just nutted in my underwear." God! This film bored me to tears with its stupid art film idiocy. Zhang Yimou is so overrated and a lousy director, much like Ang Lee and any other art filmmakers.
This film is somewhat of an improvement from Zhang Yimou's previous effort "Hero", 'cause yes the story is more consistent and easier to understand. Although the poetic garbage in "Flying Daggers" is more straightforward rather than just going all over the place and being absurdly paradoxical like "Hero" was.
The martial arts action was okay, I suppose. It's the only thing I really cared about and it's not anything to gloat about. It wasn't that great.
The cinematography was nice if you like that sort of thing. I can admire the flowy shit but it's just not my style.
The sex scene was awful. I swear it looked like Takeshi Kaneshiro was having sex with a praying mantis. Ugh!
Well, there you go! Slave loses more credibility because, unlike most people, he can see through these films' deceptions and does not comply to mainstream idiocy. Glad you people like this garbage but I don't. Completely boring and self-indulged piece of crap.
"The butterflies scream in agony, the love you show through apathy, the facade you wear is cruel, as the mountains play the fool." What the f@#$ are you talking about!?!

I agree... This film is more for arthouse goons, than hardcore fu fans!
Shaolin Prince (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Seeing this for the first time, it already tops my list as one of my favorite Shaw Brother flicks.
It boasts a solid cast and is a must-see for Ti Lung fans. I found the wirework to be very effective, working well within the context of the fights. It doesn't become so over the top that it takes away from the fights. Compared to a lot of other early films that started using wirework, I found the wirework in this to be much better.
There's so much else to like about the movie with all that they pack into it: the 18-man Lohan array, great weapons, and very creative ending fight. It's well worth getting just for the fights alone, of which there are plenty.

I gave it 4.5 stars, but it is a terrifically entertaining film.
This film has garnered lots of criticism for the story and abrupt ending. It has also gotten many thumbs up for the great action sequences by Tony Jaa and the stunt personnel involved in making this awesome feature!
This is a period film of revenge set in a turbulent time of Thailand/Siam's history. Tony Jaa watches his parents die on order from the King's mad heir, in order to secure his power. Tony escapes and is taken in and trained by a community of pirate mercenaries from childhood. When Tony comes of age he leaves the adoptive father and leader of the pirates for revenge! Along the way is plenty of action and a good plot twist leaving the viewer wanting more!
The cinematography was excellent! The stunts and action outstanding. Tony Jaa shows that he is more than just a Muay-Thai expert by using various forms and weapons! The story was straightforward and simple with a great supporting cast portraying the villains, fighters, and family! I think many overlook the acting in favor of the action. The actor portraying Cher Nung, the pirate leader, was excellent. The ending is not what you expect but sets you up for a sequel, kind of like the ending of " The Empire Strikes Back ". All in all this is a must-see film for action lovers. The stunts are fantastic!

This movie was totally awesome and I also agree about the abrupt ending. I think that some people out there are aware that Tony is capable of more than just Muay Thai. In Ong Bak he unleashed numerous Korean and Chinese kicking and acrobatic techniques.
Once one gets past the abruptness of the ending, this is a great action showcase, with better acting than I had previously seen in Thai martial arts cinema. Tony Jaa is a phenomenal fighter. As for the abrupt ending, Part 3 is coming: Hope for the best!
A truly great Halloween movie, a refreshing taste of real Halloween spirit. A wonderful mingling of several stories taking place at the same time.
I was really impressed by this one, I had been hearing the hype going on for months and whenever I hear hype I immediately take the movie down a grade or two simply because to me hype is always trying compensate for the movie's glaring flaws (this is one of the lingering effects of "Episode 1" to me, the more anticipated a movie the less I know I'll like it, thanks George). But this actually impressed me. It really taps into the fun, mischievous spirit of Halloween. It isn't too gory, too scary, or too violent, because Halloween isn't the Spanish Inquisition (because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!). It is about tricks and pranks and spooky stories, not chainsaw massacres, so in that way I think the movie really finds its vein.
Halloween has always been my holiday, more than Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July, or Earth Day. My holiday has always been Halloween, and a movie that loves the holiday with the same verve and gusto as me will always find its way into my heart. It reminded me a bit of a live action "Nightmare Before Christmas" in that same Halloween reverence and energy. This is a must watch for Halloween fans the world over, and is perfect viewing for Halloween night.

I take it down a star, but definitely a well made film. I was a little spooked out after the film, which is a good sign.
You can go ahead and cry all you want about Rob Zombie and how splendid his crappy music is. The bottom line is, Rob Zombie is a horrible director. He's is almost like Oliver Stone and it sucks.
To think I was all excited to assimilate "House of 1,000 Corpses" 'cause considering Rob's reputation as a horror film buff, you'd think it be grand and epic. Years go by as Rob's movie is rejected constantly by film studio distributors for this film's supposed graphic violence. Well after two or so years it was finally released, and after watching this crap, I finally understand why this film was rejected. This film was rejected 'cause, well, IT SUCKED!!!! COMPLETELY OVERRATED PILE OF CRAP!!!!
Where the film fails logically is in its direction. It is exactly like an Oliver Stone film which is shot in many aspects and in many different forms and you can't even tell what the hell is going on. The story is nonsensical. It's just a bunch of hillbillies torturing stupid brat teens. It's just--urgh, this film just sucks.
Words can't describe it, this film is abysmal and only people who want to have buttsex with Rob Zombie will like it.

Someone get Rob Zombie some lube, I loved this flick. Doctor Satan ruled.
real mature review...NOT! Come on man it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this film out. Horror with a little goof inside, lighten up or make something better yourself. Otherwise you should read some online reviews before you purchase consiCRAP.
Do we have two of the greatest screen martial artists of all time paired together for the first time? Do the two fight and then team up to help good conquer evil? Do we have great choreography by Yuen Woo-Ping? This film has all of these elements but still does not live up to the great expectations placed upon it for the first meeting of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Why? Because the film is about our reluctant hero, portrayed by Michael Angarino.
If the producers could have found a better actor, I believe the film would have been better. Not by much, because fans were expecting Jet and Jackie to be the main focus and not supporting characters on a mission of destiny for Michael Angarino. On the plus side, I thought the cinematography, costumes, and supporting cast in the fantasy world were good. The real world scenes left a lot to be desired due again to Angarino's personality. The plot was ambitous, about a teen transported to a land of immortals and tasked with freeing the imprisoned Monkey King. He is helped by a misfit group of companions in his quest and learns about not only kung fu but also friendship, loyalty, and life.
The Hollywood influence is clearly felt on this film. It was not what I expected, but it did keep my interest. As others have pointed out, if I saw this back in my sense-of-wonder days as a child, I would have loved it. Upon seeing it as a jaded adult, I expected more, but I did manage to enjoy what was there.

Well stated, bro. Your reasoning was honest and spot on.
Oh gosh, Sgt, people hate on this movie.. Thanks for givin this the correct rating and explaining your reason. You are a pure gem [an addition] to this website!
I was hugely disappointed in "Forbidden Kingdom" and thought it could of been a success. I agree Angarino sucked and only liked him when he mentioned classic old school kung-fu films which surprised me a bit.
Deadful Melody (product link) Martial Arts / Fantasy Watching this again reminds me just how terrible most of these movies were during this era. Campy, confused, meandering, wandering tone. As if someone were trying to appeal to everyone rather then the largest audience possible. There is a difference.
This one has an interesting mix of washed up martial arts actors and Cantopop stars. There really aren't any martial arts here, only wire- and magic-fu. It's worth a once-over if you are a fan of Yuen Biao or Brigitte Lin. But it isn't "The Storm Riders".
The Iron Monkey [1977] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure WOW!!! UNBELIEVABLE!
Peculiarly crafted choreography; best out-for-revenge plot ever constructed in a martial arts movie. They put their hearts in this one! A must-buy for choreography freaks like me!!
Disciples Of Shaolin Temple (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure The mainland wu shu warriors strike again. This was an interesting era (mid 80's) while Hong Kong was planning its next big move ("Project A") and relying heavily on wires--and not just the wuxia movies, the mainlanders were focused on choreography. And although highly stylized, it always seemed more grounded. Not bad for flowery kicks and embroidered fists. Not quite a lost classic but certainly a hidden treasure.

Kung fu films are so rare these days so I would label this a hidden treasure as well as a lost classic.
There are a few horror movies out there that, due to budget constraints, technological constraints, or just overall fumbling of a good idea, should be remade; and "The Hills Have Eyes" was a good candidate.
The original just felt really, really cheap--cheaper than it probably should have been. This one fixes all of that, giving you more guts and gore thanks to "Haute Tension's" Alexandre Aja, who knows a thing or two about gore. This movie just works better on all levels than the original, but its only drawback is that many times the movie's sets were too obvious, the setting was just too overly done. The weird 50s model home the cannibals lurk about was too Hollywood to be real, but aside from a few quibbles about the loss of an overall authentic quality the first had simply by shooting in the middle of bloody nowhere, this movie outperforms the original in every way.
If you want a good suspenseful gore film that doesn't get as excessive as other gore films do, then you will enjoy this one.

Kung Fu Hustle (product link) Comedy / Action/Adventure This is a comedy! If you're not a fan of good old slapstick comedy with tons of sight gags and cartoonish humor, you definitely will not like this movie.
Stephen Chow is an acquired taste. Either you like his humor or you don't. Kind of like Jim Carrey and Jerry Lewis, his movies are silly but sometimes fun. With that said, "Kung Fu Hustle" is a parody of those period martial arts films that we love, with a modern twist. I didn't like everything I saw in the movie, but it was funny. I thought the choreography and special effects by Yuen Wo Ping, Sammo Hung, and Chow were pretty good. You could tell that some money went into the CGI effects. Some of the scenes and action were over the top, but that's what made the film!

Good points as always. Great entertainment for fans of this kind of humor, comics, anime and old school.
A film about some guy who learns kung fu from some guy so he can capture some guy to avenge some guy then get into a family friendly orgy with a bunch of guys.
Yet another Liu Chia-Liang film where forgiveness is divine. No wonder Chang Cheh quit doing movies with Liu. Liu probably was being egotistical and wanted the protagonist to have tailpipe copulation with the antagonist and share their infatuations with martial arts with one another. Of course, I'm being hypothetical. God! I wonder if a person who's killed 10,000 babies, raped 100,000 women, and razed villages just for the purposes of stealing 2 taels of silver would be forgiven in a Liu film? All signs point to yes. He must be forgiven 'cause, after all, a punch to the face and expressed elation will assuage his thoughts from infamy and he'll never rape again. Gee, I guess I should follow this suit and forgive Hitler for killing 1,000,000 of Jews. Freakin' idiots.
Sorry, that was uncalled for but this is why I could never consider Liu Chia-Liang a great director. Not because his kung fu choreography was sucky (far from that) but the stories he puts in most of his films suck. The whole consolidation process is just flat-out crappy. "Heroes Of The East" was the only film of his I could thoroughly acccept his "sharing the knowledge" shtick, but this is retarded, especially with this film, "Challenge of the Masters". I WANT DEATH and that is why Chang Cheh will always be better director than Liu Chia-Liang.
The movie itself is average at best with Liu's brilliant (not his best, however) kung fu choreography and so forth, but the amount of fights are the slightest bit lacking. The story is wretched and stupid and not worth assimilating unless you want a brain tumor. Everything else you’d expect from a Shaw Brother movie: all there. Whoopie-do.
Only recommended to Liu Chia-Liang nutcases, and I know there are a lot of you out there, but please, be sensible and logical; this film sucked donkey butt!

Creepshow rules, the original "Tales from the crypt "
This is the kind of old-school martial arts movie I love best, emphasizing real skills with phenomenal choreography involving fast and furious Shaolin long pole techniques, fists, and fancy footwork.
The story follows a young man named Cheng, who is fleeing an arranged marriage because he loves another girl named Mei Ling and his prospective bride is a chubby but intimidating kung fu practitioner. He winds up in Shaolin, hoping to improve his skills and hide from his betrothed.
He meets a number of other men who have traveled wide and far to become disciples at the famous Shaolin Temple, but Master Heng, the scowling teacher assigned to them, does not readily teach them kung fu.
This basically follows a familiar theme that one must train hard developing mental, physical, and even spiritual strength and endurance before tackling martial arts forms and techniques. Thus the students haul water and firewood, work in the kitchen, and do all sorts of menial labor.
Eventually, a kung fu fanatic simply called The Ranger shows up at Shaolin. He was a former student, and a ferocious fighter, but his ambition is to be the best warrior, and not to achieve enlightenment. He attacks and nearly kills several Shaolin students, and humiliates the Abbott and other monks, who refuse to give him a duel for it violates their principles.
Ultimately, Master Heng begins to teach his students more kung fu, especially Cheng, who has the greatest potential. Heng even duels with The Ranger in an attempt to stop the latter's rampage, but the 18 Lohans sent by the Abbott intervene and force Heng to return the temple and be "punished" by sequestering him in a meditation hall. Cheng, who has improved his skills adequately enough, then goes out and defeats The Ranger once and for all in a final showdown.
Anyway, what makes this movie special is the unique "Chop Kick" technique, a really cool move that attacks an opponent's shins and the tendons above the heel, tripping and potentially crippling him. Building up endurance to absorb and deflect the kick is the best counter for it. No other movie I know of shows off this unusual and devastating "Chop Kick" maneuver, and to see it in action is alone worth the price of getting this movie.
This movie has fantastic training sequences, humor, and touching drama as the mean-looking Master Heng, who has a real compassionate nature behind the tough guy persona, cares for his students as a father would love his sons. Highly recommended.
Casshern (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction Visually pretty, incomprehensible story. Well, maybe just boring. Most of the best bits are in the trailer sadly.
I completely agree. This garbage was one of the most boring movies ever. I guess the visuals are meant to distract from an incomprehensible plot, terrible acting and the fact it is more boring than watching grass grow.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Way over-hyped! Takes forever to get into the action. And when it occurs, the main actress moves pretty slowly as she tries to slide under bars, through obstacles, etc. And nothing tricky or different from the action in a previous Tony Jaa film.
The stunt-work is fairly bad in my opinion, with these poor Thai guys just bashing their bodies against floors, counters, and off roofs. These guys are literally hurting themselves for their measly pay, no question about the pain, as they flop around for the camera. I saw no skill in what they were doing as it was just taking the damage for a sad paycheck. Someone forgot to tell them that a real stuntman makes it just LOOK like they're getting hurt. And it was confirmed in the out-takes as they even show all of these guys getting banged up and some poor dude even ends up in the hospital practically in a body cast as the crew and actors laugh and applaud as if there's a reason to celebrate ("Hey, you're not dead! Only paralyzed!").
I was thoroughly disappointed and couldn't believe I sat through the entire, pathetic movie. I usually think that HKFlix is right on in their ratings, but this is one where I say, "You stole 92 minutes of my life!"

A very different take on a martial arts movie, but a great unique achievement for modern day martial arts cinema. Jeeja Yanin is stunning and powerful, a very charismatic performance by her ,andprops to her for taking real kicks in the face while filming.
I thought the movie and Ayase were awesome! I hope they do another. The physical movement of Iaido, bokken, and Katana moves was pretty good. I am trained in Aikido, Daito, bokken (and Chinese martial arts also) for over 45 years now and still work out today--and I thought the movie and the martial choreography was quite credible. The storyline was fine and they didn't make her superwoman--I found this was more realistic. She got hurt and actually cried. And I must say it was all done in good taste!
The producers did NOT have to add nude scenes to sell the film! I applaud them! The movie merited a place all by itself. And I am glad this was a Japanese-produced film, otherwise it would have had someone else in it--like that horrible series "Kung-Fu" with Carradine--that was very lame. He was awful. I am Japanese, American-born, and I thought this was a tastefully done film with a woman in it. They didn't have to sell us nudity with the film to legitimize its place in the "Zatoichi" line! Please make another film.
I am don't agree with your comments about Carradine for one R.I.P. 2 I am not happy Zatoichi is a girl now. 3 There is way too damn many girlie hero movies coming from Japan and it's making me sick.
Dirty Ho (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I was completely blown away by this movie. It was unusual, fun, entertaining, and quite unpredictable. An exceptional acting performance by Gordon Liu and Wong Yu. The fight scenes were few, but exceptionally done and memorable. The degree of difficulty was quite high, and I applaud the brilliant choreography efforts and directing by the great Lau Kar Leung. This movie is highly recommended.
After watching the promo material and trailers, hearing about all the training he went through and subsequent breakdowns from over budget shooting, etc., etc., etc., I was expecting the most kick-ass over the top action/stunt movie ever made.
NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Let's keep this short. ALL the action is super generic. It's just a bunch of fighting and people being killed or beaten down. There are no amazing takedowns or creative fights, it's all super plain Jane stuff. Punch, kick, stab, slice. Other than the three seconds of rope dart, nothing special.
No stunt work at all. Other than the flip from on top of an elephant and then landing on a guy, there was nothing here worth seeing.
I railed "Ong-Bak 1" and "Tom Yum Goong" for being just stupid over the top action that wasn't necessary and lacking a coherent story, but I changed my mind. I want the over the top stunts that blow me away rather than a movie without that, and still an incoherent story.
It tries harder this time to make sense, but the ending made NO SENSE AT ALL, and sometimes you had no idea who he is fighting. And there was NO POINT in having the female relationship love drama going on because there is no pay off. She's there, she misses him, sees him again, that's all. There isn't any resolution or purpose to even have her in the film. It's as if they planned to but cut it out or didn't shoot the ending.
Overall, this is not anywhere near as good as it should have been. This was his chance to shine with a real story and some new fighting styles that would really show off his ability. What you get is a generic action movie with no spectacular moments and a story that amounts to dribble.

Ong-Bak 2 has many flaws, but is vastly better than you say. The largest bulk of its problem is this: It is not part 2 of the previous film, but a sadly incomplete part 1 of a new series. I believe many of the dangling threads will be tied up,

Truly one disgusting film. Mindless gore, dumb charachters, all around goofy film. The Japanese are good at making me sick to my stomach with these sorts of movies, truly disgusting and nauseated until barfing. I could smell the stink from the
Fist Of The North Star [1986] (product link) Animation / Martial Arts It's been a long time since I last saw this 80s anime treasure, and it is every bit as good as I remember. This and "Vampire Hunter D" are perfect examples of what made 80s anime so, so great. That total over-the-top quality they have makes them just so fun. The bad guys are totally evil and often twenty feet tall, the good guy sounds like Bruce Lee when he kicks ass, the deaths are gory, and the action is plentiful--there isn't anything in this movie that goes halfway. My favorite scene is the reintroduction of Ken, when he smashes down an entire skyscraper that starts to fall on his head and just keeps walking, plowing a hole through it as he goes. This is another in a long line of excellent 80s post-apocalyptic movies like "Road Warrior", only with more gore and kung-fu, and who doesn't want more gore and kung-fu?
Ten Tigers From Kwangtung (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I agree the story can be somewhat troubling to follow, but luckily before watching this I read the reviews here and made sure to pay attention and found that the plot wasn't too difficult to follow after all.
But you don't watch the movie for the sometimes confusing plot, you watch it for the fights--which there are plenty of, and they are all varied and avoid any repetition. The blood sprays and the finale are completely out of this world. I wasn't expecting to see what happened happen but it really capped the movie off well.
This is a lot like "Avenging Warriors Of Shaolin" where there is a weak plot but the weak plot is easily overshadowed by tons of fighting. The cast could have been a little smaller maybe and the story could have been drawn out a little more to help clarify things, but this movie is about kung-fu and it delivers by the truck load.
For those that like unrealistic and silly training sequences, bad acting, horrible choreography, a "true story" more removed from fact than Oliver Stone's "Nixon", laughable dialogue including the obligatory faux-eastern philosophy that tries oh so hard to be profound but comes off as stilted and hilarious, this movie is for you.
I remember being introduced to this film by a friend who kept insisting Frank Dux was an unstoppable badass and that this movie, which I was repeatedly assured was a true story, served as irrefutable evidence of that fact. Intrigued, I decided to check it out. I made the mistake of expecting a gritty, realistic, hard-hitting action drama (before you laugh, remember Van Damme was still a relative unknown at this time). Instead I sat through a movie with an unprecedented cheese factor, fight choreography reminiscent of a preschool playground tussle and a "true story" so obviously conjured out of thin air that even using the weasel words "based on actual events" was an insult to the intelligence of the viewer. The ridiculousness of the story was not helped by the asinine "Touch of Death" scene involving the breaking of bricks. The "lifting" of a line from "Enter the Dragon" about bricks not hitting back probably had Bruce Lee rolling in his grave.
And if anyone was left with any doubt they were watching some cheesy crap that could only come out of the decade that was the 80s, Ogre from "Revenge of the Nerds" was given a prominent supporting role.
Forrest Whitaker must have really decided to go slumming it when he accepted his role in this travesty of modern American cinema. Or perhaps at that time he subscribed to Lo Lieh's philosophy of never turning down a movie role as long as it paid.
The worst part of this movie is the very facet that should have been its greatest strength. Obviously, in retrospect, no one should have expected anything remotely resembling acting from Van Damme. However one would think that the fight choreography would at least be up to snuff. Sadly, this is not even close to being the case. The "monkey style" on display is so bad one can only wonder what was going through the mind of the director when he decided to commit that particular scene to celluloid. Several of the fights seem to be nothing more than an excuse for Van Damme to do the splits in midair or to show off his pecs. The scene with Bolo is particularly bad. He clearly seems to be outclassed, yet he still wins, even after taking a beating and being blinded by a cheating Bolo. Evidently his teacher was more prescient than Nostradamus because it just so happens a younger Frank Dux received extensive training while blindfolded.
However, this movie deserves a 1/2 star simply because the unbelievable cheese factor is worth a few good laughs.
This is a deeply flawed film, but its entertainment value puts it much higher than 1/2 star. I suspect Forest Whitaker took the role because he wanted a job: His profile and appeal were much lower then than now.
Howard The Duck (product link) Comedy / Action/Adventure This movie is boring, silly, stupid, and the only good thing in it is the spetacular stop-motion effects in the end.

This was probably the biggest disappointment of films I actually paid to watch. It is truly dreadful. As for the running time, PAL is mastered at a greater speed than other formats, compressing running time and slightly speeding action and dialogue.
hang on folks...this movie was made in the wonderful 80's...HTD is AWESOME and could quite possibly be the ET for big kids...let's not forget that Lea is HOT. Thanks, Regi
if you want an increased heart rate, along with a super jump kick to the face, look no further. Solid fight action scenes with loose storyline, some silly unrealistic parts but solid flick no doubt. Tony-jaa is a monster in this film.
House (product link) Dark Comedy / Horror Saw this when it came out on VHS back in what I believe is colloquially known as "the day", and have loved it ever since. It's one of that rare breed, a horror-comedy done right--creepy, funny, atmospheric, well-written, coherently filmed, excellently acted, and tragically underrated.
Amen, amen, amen! What a classic! This was the first "horror movie" I ever saw, and I'm in love with it too. I used to have the poster in my room: "Ding dong, you're dead."
