Bio: You can count on me not having any spoilers. In fact, I try to use as few specifics as possible. Instead, I more try to focus on who will like the film and what it's akin to. I also try to cut through the hype ("It's the next Hard Boiled!!").
I live in LA and work in "The Industry". No, not porn-I'm strictly behind the camera, anyways. In film school, I was the only guy watching HK/Action flicks while everyone else was pretending to like French New Wave and Italian Neorealism films. :)
Bow down and show some respect for one of the top ten all time greatest kung fu flicks. Lower. Let me start of by saying that I just really wanted to write a review for this movie but I acknowledge that Jay Lee probably wrote the best review for this movie already. Just giving props to those that are deserving. Now to my insane ramblings of blather that are often misinterpreted and in some cases incomprehensible due to my heavy use of logic and honesty.
This one doubles as not only my favorite Gordon Liu movie but also as my favorite Shaw Brothers movie. I know there are so many to choose from and you think that one is the best and dude over there is all like "what about the '36th Chamber'?" Well, chill, we're talking about my favorites now, not yours. We talk about your favorites in your review, sucka.
Lau Kar Leung crafts this movie and its fight scenes with inspired perfection. Gordon Liu dishes out the goods with the jack-of-all trades fu by demonstrating that old school multiple proficiency that pretty much died in the 90's when everyone could just have a single gimmick and still get by. This movie is not only arguably Gordon Liu's best martial arts performance but also Yasuaki Kurata's as well. You have to wait all the way to the end to see Yasuaki finally get down; but when he does, HOLY SHIT, he's a fuckin' smokin' now! (Maybe, just maybe, there is one "Family Guy" fan out there who got that reference. Probably not.)
Anyhow, this film has got one of the best complilations of variety in martial arts styles and weapons put to use. The Japanese performers and characters are all straight-up bad-asses, and really Japanese, unlike many other Chinese films that used Chinese actors and portrayed the Japanese as bitch-made predatory miscreants. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'. Well, I guess to truly complete a review for this movie I got to give up my favorite fight. Damn, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one favorite I would cheat and say the entire end fight with Gordon and Yasuaki, which is basically like 3-4 fights in one. I don't mean to beat a dying horse (unless it's called for or I'm bored or something), but Mr. Kurata is so frickin' slick it's unreal. The man handles a ninja-to like he was born holding one, and his crab style is one of the dopest, slickest and most creative things I have ever seen. This movie has everything for martial arts lovers including a tough chick.
I also got to say Buddha bless Dragon Dynasty for releasing these perfectly digitally remastered fu classics with the original subtitles and dubbings while including all kinds of sweet bonuses like interviews with the legends that made these movies possible. Make sure this is in your collection. Essential and severely enjoyable.

the ratings and the reviews say it all. a must have for any collector
If HKFLIX had higher star rating, this movie would be up there. The movie is amazing, it had no blood, & no finishing movies but it entertains. Plus it's a great history lesson too.
Hold onto your hats, sports fans, and try and keep your knickers dry. We have an excellent treat here for all you film lovers. This is one of those movies that can either make or break your Asian film collection. If you don't own it, stop reading right now and purchase the shit. I'll be here when you get back. Now, for the rest of you folks that still aren't sure, "Battle Royale" is monumental entertainment. It combines a deeply probing psychological survey on the effects of extraordinary stress and survival/primal extincts that manifest under extreme (and shady) circumstances in the under-developed minds of children--as well as the media-frenzied constantly escalating bloodlust. Don't be mistaken, folks, this is a story that could one day take place in our world and possibly during our lifetimes. "Battle Royale" draws from many themes of film, books, and short stories that came before it, but it molds these themes into something that winds up feeling truly original. Raw, graphic violence is mixed with stirring emotion and remarkable performances for maximum effect. While I have not read the book, I have every intention of doing so because this story holds the boldness and potency of the classics of literature such as "I Am Legend" (survival against odds),"1984" (society's dystopian circumstances) or even the "Hagakure" ("The Way of the Samurai is in desperateness...Simply become insane and desperate."-page 45 1983 ed. paperback). The film is powerful on so many levels. I did read the entire 15 volume manga though and that rocks, so you should probably go get that too. Now, understand that you will cringe a few times during your first viewing because the action is so raw and the kids are young; so this may provide slight sensory overload, but you'll get over it. You're a big kid now. This movie was everything that "A Clockwork Orange" tried to be. I personally think that Stanley Kubric failed to capture the emotional content of the book I keep hearing about (never read that book either). While one of my dudes on this site does hold that film in high regard I can't help but feel that it came off as meaningless whereas this film ("Battle Royale") comes off as profound and powerful.
If you don't have it, I would give it my highest recommendation; and if you do have it, you should probably watch it at least once every year to keep good company with a well crafted story. Thanks for the time, campers, I got to peel.

Good review. I can understand that someone wouldn't like this film for its controversial nature and content, but saying it is hyped up and not a well made film is ridiculous
Everyone should see this movie, as a test: Those who like it should be heeded; We need not listen to those who do not. It's great (so...you should heed me...really).
Great review. You definitely nailed some of the better points. I'm still trying to work-up what I want to say in my review. You handled it well. 5 stars, hands down.
Battle Royale is a hyped up movie and it's really not that great, kids killing other kids on a remote island- I guess somebody ripped off Lord of the Flies.
def. agree this is an awesome flick about kids goin wild! And agree with your point on a clockwork orange & kubrick- the novel had a much better narrative than the film. The message of the film is powerful- I love this film.
Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai (product link) Art / Drama You people need to get aware. There was only one review for this and it sucked. Pay attention, folks, damn. Anyhow, this flick has cult king written all over it. I rarely disagree with the HKFlix evalutation of a movie but they were unreasonably hard on this one. This movie is actually quite brilliant and probably tied with "Throw Down" for best adaption of the samurai code and methodolgy to a contemporary setting in films.
"Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" is evenly distributed entertainment that is filled with great performances from a diverse and talented cast, timeless quotes from the "Hagakure" (the book of the samurai), laugh-out-loud humor and good portions of gunfire. You won't be bored for one minute if you have any kind of an attention span at all. Intelligent, provocative, funny and highly entertaining I would recommend this film to anyone.

I'd rate this slightly lower, but you are basically correct.
JJ is a director you either love or you get put to sleep. I was expecting an action flick, to my first viewing was a disappointment. Once I removed my expectations and gave it more viewings I saw what it was doing. A cameo from RZA to top it off.
This movie tried to hard to explore a character's mind set. The movie didn't not go anywhere, 4 an art picture is was just bland. The movie as a whole was not clear on wht kind of story it wanted 2 tell-therefor the actors we're distracted in their roles
The film does entertain but it's mostly for the people that are into the samurai pictures. I love samurai movies but when they modernize it, I just can't get into that stuff.
The movie was all right, I think the performances were good- I just couldn't get that much involved with it though. The movie is not for everyone, I guess I came with high expectations going in. Tht is 1 mistake tht nobody should do in a pic such as this.
Hey thnks for the comments, your right I only had one review. I thought "Ghost Dog" was an entertaing pic but it's not my taste. The film is well shot but compared to "Throwdown" that was amazing.
i just read the comment you left kungfumaniac and i'm totally with you on that one i think the reviewer in question is fubar if you dont know what that means watch tango and cash.
I agree man. This is Jim Jarmusch's vision of the samurai code, the film is entertaining. Check out Jean-Pierre Melville "Le Samouraï" it's a 1967 hitman film, the guy follows the code too. It's Johnnie To's fave film, & John Woo models his films from it.
Sukiyaki Western Django (product link) Action/Adventure / Western If you can get by the Japanese actors speaking English then you will love this film a lot. I loved it, it was a perfect thrill ride.
Everyone and their mommas got to review this flick so pretty much everything that can be said about this flick has been said already. I guess I shouldn't even bother. Wait a minute, screw that, I want a piece too.
A lot of folks seem to think that this is one of the greatest kung fu movies of all time. Those folks know what they are talking about. This ball of thunder laced lightning hits rougher and heavier than a Kimbo Slice uppercut. We all know the deal and we all know who's in it. The real eternal question is: which match-up is sicker? Jet vs. Yasuaki Kurata, or Jet vs. Billy Chow? There's a stumper for you. They both rock so hard that if you bring up this question among your friends who are into fu flicks it will usually spark a pretty wild debate. I personally lean slightly toward the Jet/Yasuaki showdown. Something about wind and blindfolds--it just gets me going, dude.
"Fist Of Legend" is possibly the closest thing to perfect fight choreography around (perfect is relative, but honestly it might be perfect) and incorporates many martial art styles, such as Longfist, Ditang Chuan, Tong Bei, Chin Na, Aikido, Karate, boxing, Judo, Jujitsu, and quite a few more that I am probably forgetting. I know some cats say that the general was using Muay Thai. They have either poor eyesight or just improper schooling. Billy's just busting out with hardcore Karate.
This movie is the dope shit and every last one of you know it. If you haven't seen it, you better head for the hills, son, because we will hunt you down and staple you to something so we can force you to see this awesome piece of kung fu cinema history. You'll probably thank us afterwords and maybe even offer us a beer. And we'll accept. 'Cause we like beer. Keep kicking for the stars, folks. I'll be around.

didn't like it as much has some cuz I hate remakes but this is the schitzer, ACHTUNG! :)
I've seen a lot of reviews for "Fist of Legend" this week. I am pumped for the Dragon Dynasty release. This is one of the best kung fu movies ever made, I still remember watching it in theaters-it was a great experience.
All right you asked for it. History lesson, kids: Bruce Lee is the shit. He is the man that reconfigured the whole paradigm of contemporary martial arts training and modern combat philosophy and psychology. He trained with the absolute best (many that went on to become grandmasters of their styles) and he would take on any challenge that came his way. On a radio interview he once said "to be honest I am the best fighter in the world currently". Do you know who sought him out, beat down his door and whooped his ass? Nobody. Nobody said shit because they had more sense than at least one reviewer here. I know all this because, like many of my fellow reviewers here and also like many of my fellow martial artists here, Bruce Lee was an inspiration and a legend--a profound innovator and thinker and perhaps the truest form of a warrior--but beyond that he was a hero to a lot of us. While it was true that he was a mere 5' 7" and 140lbs., his punching power had been measured to be on a par with that of a heavyweight professional boxer. It is not fair for some reviewers with dangerously low I.Q.'s and very little understanding of everything to soil the name of a deceased hero to millions in the name of "truth". Truth is connected to reality. Reality is all perception. The perceptions dictate the truth making it subjective. Meaning the "truth" for a "special" needs kid is not the same truth for the rest of the class. Oh yeah, that reminds me--"Enter the Dragon" was the best fucking movie ever made. There's my damn review. Oh and as for you, Mike Lee, "Man you come right out of a comic book".

The battle with the critics was magnificent. Your reviewing skills are extra-ordinary. And I was going to ask you to join us!
Im not a huge Bruce fan. But this is a classic. And I think Bruce was more hands on with this movie, than he was given credit for. Watch the steaming pile, that is GYMKATA, and tell me, the same guy directed this gem.
Shaolin Challenges Ninja (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This film is amazing. How can someone make a martial arts movie without a single death in it? Well Lau Kar Leung did, and boy didn't he do it well. This is without any shadow of doubt one of my top ten kung fu flicks of all time. I would challenge anyone to find a better kung fu weapons flick than this one. Gordon Liu and the Japanese fighters all give superb performances with their chosen weapons. My favorite fight is when Gordon Liu with his 3 section staff takes on one of the Japanese who uses a nunchaku. The fight is just incredible. I can't recommend this film enough. If you haven't seen this film yet, then shame on you. Just go and buy it. Thinking about it I think I'm going to watch this film right now.

A very strong film - with a refreshing humanity to the story.
Hell yeah ,awesome. I found this movie by accident because i was searching for japanese flix . Let me tell you, I was very pleased with this one. I have the older version on dvd . I think i will get it again on the dragon dynasty version.
Gordon Liu is probably the most overlooked of the classic Kung Fu heroes in the modern day. The skill he displayed with the wide variety of weapons in this film is nothing short of extraordinary. This one is a true classic.
Fist Of Legend (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Well what can be said about this great kung fu classic that hasn't already been said? I shall just say I think this is Jet Li's greatest achievement. The fight choreography in this movie is fast and furious and is up there with the very best kung fu flicks. I was glad to see that Yuen Wo Ping kept the wire work to a minimum and kept the fights more grounded, as I think anything else would have spoiled the film. Some people try comparing this to Bruce Lee's "Fist Of Fury". Yes, the story's more or less the same, but I wouldn't say one is better than the other. I love them both. I reckon most people have seen this classic by now, but if you haven't, you really need to. I can't wait to get my hands on the two-disc ultimate edition in September.

Exceptional martial arts embraced by a very good script and story.
The Way Of The Dragon (product link) Martial Arts I think "Way Of The Dragon" is an amazing kung fu movie with some of the greatest action you're ever likely to see. This was one of the first kung fu movies I remember seeing when I was a nipper and was blown away by Bruce Lee's ability as a martial artist--especially the confrontation between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the coliseum. It is just breath taking, and to this day I still think it's one of the best one-on-one fights ever filmed. The plot and the acting leaves a lot to be desired, but who cares, it's still a classic kung fu flick. This film brings back all the memories, and that's why this film will always have a special place in my heart.

Bruce Lee had something he wanted to express, and it came out most clearly in this film. It's a masterpiece - not my favorite of his, but I have no defense of my gauchery.
A must have classic . I have all of bruce lee films on video, They are so great that i got them again on dvd, thanks to HKFLIX, this site is amazing if you are a kung fu movie fan .
The "Election" saga is one that asks some big questions: What do you want out of life? What are you willing to do to achieve? Why do you want what it is that you want?
The characters in "Election" 1 and 2 want absolute power. And we learn that it comes with an extraordinarily high price. We also learn that regardless of how noble one's intentions may be, there are serious consequences to chasing such a lofty goal.
"Election 2" is a direct sequel following the same group of characters from the first film and taking place a little less than two years later. Those that have seen the first film will understand the significance of that.
If you loved the first film, there's little doubt you'll enjoy this one as well. What really draws me in to these movies is the way that the characters are expanded upon, especially in the second movie. Triads are usually so generic and cliched that tend to be the same in movie after movie. But in these movies, we see characters that could almost exist in the same reality as ours. They get sick and injured, they make mistakes, they don't always have a plan or a way out. Instead of the caricatures we're used to, here we get real characters with families, flaws, weaknesses, and mortality.
What makes "Election" 1 and 2 so strong is that they are smart films. Instead of seeing who can get a higher body count and strike the meanest pose, both films play out like chess games. You can see the players making move after move, sometimes anticipating several moves in advance. Only here, the wrong move can cost lives. These aren't the types of films that reveal themselves early. They play their cards close to the chest so you're always riding along with the characters instead of being a passive observer just waiting at the finish line for the inevitable end.
There's not much left to say. This film is an excellent finale to the two-part saga. Performances, style, story, emotion--it has it all. Anyone who loves a good gangster drama will love these movies. This film holds up its end of the deal by offering a strong conclusion. And while the end is anything but closed or final, it will have you playing out many different scenarios in your mind as to what will happen after the credits roll--a power to live beyond the screen, one of the hallmarks of a great film and a great filmmaker.
"Election 2" is a masterpiece. The film is brilliant, it is also a lot darker then the first. The actors did a wonderful job. The movie is great & I love how the film ends- one of the best movies Johnnie To has ever done.
Some people seem to be confused about a lot of things regarding purpose, function, and obviously entertainment value. I seem to read a lot of reviews from individuals who are missing the point of having different types or genres of movies. You can't use the same grading system to score basketball and boxing the same way you can't you can't judge "Seven Samurai" and "Fist of Legend" on the same scale of measurement. Though "Seven Samurai" and "Fist of Legend" are both 5-star movies they are so for different reasons and should not be rated in the same manner because they are two different creations seeking to accomplish different things while entertaining in their own respective manners. That being said, THIS is a 5-star movie. "Tom Yum Goong" is hands down the best martial arts movie to surface in the last decade. I didn't write a review for this for awhile because I just figured it went without saying. Of course then I read a few douche-soaked reviews about what is arguably one of the top ten all time greatest martial arts movies. Well fuck that. If you are not hip--get hip. This is one that will go down in history for its break-neck, balls-to-the-wall action choreography. Possibly the best fights you have ever witnessed. HA, now you have to buy it. But remember, for proper and optimal enjoyment of all of your Asian viewing, you have to watch the original Asian versions or you are not even watching the real movie. Thanks for reading and I'll see you all at the fight club for our weekly therapy. Oh crap, I wasn't supposed to talk about that...

This is an exceptional genre film. There is a distinction between that and unambitious dreck.
The only thing I disagree with is that something nowadays can go without saying. There's always someone behind a keyboard with no taste or class, but with lots of free time.
It was awesome. But you probably already knew that. Very entertaining, funny and family friendly. You probably knew that too. But, for me, what makes this movie stand out in a truly exceptional way is its central message. The point of the whole movie is vital and connected to each one of us that exist in this whole subculture. The simple message of the story is that the world would be a better place if everyone knew kung fu. Shit, I've been saying that for years, but leave it to Stephen Chow to make it the moral of a really well told story.
There are many moments of creative brilliance and comedic excellence, yet it still maintained a good amount of homage content. Completely needed for a complete Asian film collection if only to see soccer balls get jump-spin-kicked. All around fun. And it's that good kind of humor that just makes you feel good inside like when you watched Paris Hilton go to jail.
I love fu & I love Soccer and you combined them together you get a slapstick fu movie that is enjoyable from start to finish. There should be a sequel for this film as well as Kung Fu Hustle.
I guess this is just a personal thing, but Hong Kong "comedy" in my view is about as gratingly annoying as it gets and Stephen Chow is it's most obnoxious exponent. If I wanted Buster Keaton, I would watch Sherlock Jr.
POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIAL BUT COMPLETELY HONEST REVIEW WARNING: You might not like it but somebody's got to say it. Holy overhyped bowl of piss on the classics, Batman! Many folks are calling this one of the greatest martial arts movies of all time but I can give you one reason that it will never make the all time top twenty. All the greats star REAL martial artists! Only one of the three main stars is a real martial artist--oh yeah and the villian, but Cheng Pei Pei is getting old, campers. She ain't what she used to be. I guess the biggest problem with the movie is that it was a Chinese kung fu/fantasy that was tailor made for the viewing sensibilities of western audiences. Mistake #1. In doing that and trying to expand to a wider crowd it winds up detracting from the offering for true Asian cinema fans by recycling so many themes that it just becomes insulting. Now, I never read the comic but I hope to god that it is better than the writing in the movie. The story of the film is basically a hodge podge collection of every single kung fu movie plot device and stereotype ever used such as: secret style, legendary hero, legendary weapon, young martial arts prodigy, forbidden romance, warrior student(who has become a master) seeks revenge of master's death by super villan, wise master must enlighten young upstart, etc. What brings the horrible generic plot together is the wonderful performances of the cast which are all quite noteworthy. I also think that something should be said of Zhang Ziyi. What is wrong with you folks making this bitch famous just because she's, what, cute? She does not look all that great or convincing doing martial arts. Apparently, now, everyone with some kind of dance background is all of a sudden a martial arts/action star. $#@*&^*!!!!! Michelle Yoeh and some phenomenal choreography from Yuen Wo Ping that is nothing short of brilliant kind of save this movie from becoming a complete Chinese/Hollywood bastardization of the classics. It is honestly a beautiful and entertaining movie and if you haven't had too much exposure to Asian cinema then I would say it's a four to four and a half star movie. However, if you have already seen most of the movies that this flick bites off then you will get where I'm coming from.

While I rate this higher than you do, each of your concerns is valid. Rather than a revolutionary departure, the film is a very competent retread of what had come before, with strong cinematography and art direction. Zhang Ziyi's character is a problem.
The story was completely incoherent. What the hell do people mean that when these people fly, their bodies are doing what their hearts aren't? THIS IS ART FILM RETARDATION AT IT'S PEAK!
Yuen Wo ping choreograph this picture- with his abilities & talent he makes any actor look amazing. Did you see the Matrix? wires can be great, & with this picture it did. Just because it is hyped up to Westerners you don't like it tht does not make sense
I think you may have rated this one a little too highly. But I am glad someone is willing to puncture the hype balloon that is Crouching Tiger. This movie seems to have been made to appeal to people who read the New Yorker. Too much wirework also.
I agree with everything that has been stated - This will never be a classic in the same way non real fu fans will consider the Matrix and Kill Bill having legendary fu status - I would Have to say Hero was a far Superior movie on every level
It's true, Zhang ZIyi, she's really not that great. I remember when this film came out in theaters I wasn't that impressed, I've been watching kung fu flix my whole life. But this movie open a lot of doors to people who never saw a martial arts pic.
The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters (product link) Documentary / Comedy I expected this documentary to be an over-magnified dissection of some obscure video game subculture--which it is--but the bizarre dramas and conflicts that unfold as the events play out are mind-boggling and indescribably compelling. Even if they had tried to script this, they could never have equaled it. The people alone are just pure perfection, and the crazy story is icing on top of that perfection.
That's all I'm going to say. You have to see this one, it's an all-time bad-ass top-10-ever documentary classic. I give it infinity stars, plus icing.

Yeah, loved this documentary. It was a real surprise.
One of the best documentaries ever made. The movie has a great story. It's a real underdog story plus the viewer also gets a villian in the mix. "King of Kong" is worth watching & purchasing. I was wondering were u rooting 4 Wiebe or for Billy?
Oooooo, snap! They took our cash, pissed in our popcorn and then left out an ending that made any sense. The essential, colossal letdown and crap-bomb of our generation. This film managed to ruin everything that came before it by concluding almost nothing except perhaps the love story which none of us gave a fuck about in the first place.
So let me get this straight. We the viewers never get to see the actual reality of this mythology, we only get to view various layers of "The Matrix". The story in its entirety takes place in a computer program that runs through "Neo's" mind. This destroys all of the grandeur of the movie and its overall significance by the simple fact that none of anything we see really happens and we don't know if any of the characters we see actually exist or if they are part of the program. Basically the film's meaning and credibility are now shot, so let's look at the "story" that played out in some dude's head. In the future a war breaks out between the last city of humans (who live near the center of the earth) and the machines that took over earth. How is this epic war for humanity concluded? Do the humans take the fight to the machines' territory and sabotage some vital junk to turn the tide (a la "Star Wars")? No. Is some brilliant plan established to gain the upper hand and thereby prove the resourcefulness and imagination of the human mind? Again, no. Perhaps the last city of Zion unites and against extraordinary odds defeats the overwelming adversary presenting the triumph of the human will and spirit? Afraid not. Or could it be that Neo steps his bitch ass up to the front lines in all his super powered glory and lays the smackdown on the machine invaders? Not even fucking close. Basically this war and movie are "concluded" with a peace treaty with cold, calculating, unfeeling, immoral machines. Doesn't that make perfect sense? Unfortunately they left out the complete ending of the movie that takes place five minutes later when the machines decide to just lie and attack the city of Zion when their defenses are completely down, thereby killing every last human.
What a great trilogy. Not only did they get us from behind storywise, they also left out that nice concentration of fu throwdowns that the previous two incorporated. Sure there were fights. Like three. The previous one had nine or so. The big end fight of Neo vs. Agent Smith always leaves me kind of on the fence. I wanted a little more fu but I did really enjoy all of the special effects and mid-flight Superman-style battling. Always good to see stuff getting broken. The man vs. machines battle was really good too, and it is because of these two big action sequences, the special effects and Collin Chou as Seraph that I don't just brand this punk ass flick with 0 star rating. The end result is a compost heap of overhyped Hollywood bullshit. As a movie, but especially as the end of a trilogy, it is the most incomprehensive crap that I have ever seen or heard of. It could have been the defining science fiction trilogy of this younger generation. But no, the ending killed it all and morphed the overall essence of the project into the ugly truth: we just watched a bunch of Keanu Reeves' flicks. Damn.

did we somehow forget the moral of the story: "machines need us and the we need the machines" the whole purpose of the film other than Neo's path which is practically akin!
Even though the FX and action were superb, the ending spoiled the whole series. The Wachowski bros. could have just made 2 great movies, oh I'm sorry they did!
The film is flawed in that it's not fully comprehensible without listening to the philosophers' commentary track, but I still like it and find it a satisfactory conclusion.
This is not the best way to close a franchise, but the movie is still intriguing. The FX work is still great and mix that with awesome action, you get a good but not great film.
The first film was visually intriguing w/ nice action that was inventive. The third was a huge disappointment, It just failed on originality. The whole mech-warrior war was lame. I felt the Wachowski bros. were rushed to finish the trilogy.
Drunken Master 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure [The uncut version is] the only cut that any "Drunken Master 2" fan should own. The movie is crazy with exciting fight scenes, and the moves of Jackie Chan always impress me. I love this film not because of the fighting and funny moments, but because it has a simple story for any man or woman to follow. The movie is packed with thrilling moments and it still amazes me to this day.
I agree with the 5 star rating but the fighting and comedic moments are at the very core of why this is a fantastic film. Probably Jackie Chan's best film, and only teaming with the legendary Lar Kar Leung!
I agree with the rating and the sentiments about the action. But the story is just generic, HK, Kung Fu fare. Simple, yes. But not the reason at all to watch this film.
Self contradictory review that makes little sense. It is a five star movie but again this review is quite poor. If you don't love the movie for its fighting or funny moments then you are pretty much missing the point of the film.
I have never read Yu Koyama's comic "Azumi", but after watching this flick I want to get my hands on one right away. I have seen "Azumi" amongst my friends many times. I remember going to the theaters in the summer of 2003 watching this intense and gory swordplay film. I am not a big fan of director Ryuhei Kitamura, but I do enjoy his campy attitude and his insane style of filmmaking.
The first time I saw this film I was a bit skeptical because I thought it was another feminist on a grudge to kick ass. I was surprised how detailed the plot was and how each character was driven to kill. It was a mind-blowing experience for me. This film takes no time to set up, with hacking and slashing at the get-go, and there is no stopping this killing machine until the final reel. Though with all this violence in this open hell world, there is some essence of beauty--for example how the wind was blown right before a kill or how there were gardens of flowers in many shots.
"Azumi" was successful to the mainstream audience for two reasons: for its over-the-top violence and its simple shots of beauty which gave the audience hope that these characters could make it out alive. "Azumi" is a wild and gory experince, but once in awhile if you look away from the violent acts you can see something nice.
This is a 4-star recommended movie for everyone and yet I have not yet achieved my goal of getting the comic. But just thinking about this film, I can't wait to get my hands on one.

The score could have been higher? You gotta be kidding me. I am amazed that people think this mildly entertaining fluff ranks up with the greatest classics of all time. Two stars for this, tops.
It's nice to see real reviews up in the newest review section. I was getting sick of seeing all those one sentence "reviews" from all those morons who are desperate for flix bucks. Keep up the good fight, player. Real writers rule!!!
Casshern (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction This has to be, without a doubt, the most boring japanese film I have ever had the displeasure of viewing. Calling the plot convoluted is an understatement akin to calling the planet Jupiter big. I own literally hundreds of Japanese films on DVD, and this is the worst of the bunch. I found myself looking at my watch to find out how much longer this piece of dreck was going to last. The pacing of this film is so languid, it makes Stanley Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" look like a Jason Statham film by comparison.
If you are impressed solely by visuals, put a shiny ribbon on a turd instead. You will know what its like to watch this film and you will save yourself money and 2.5 hours of time you can never get back. I am giving it zero stars because I can think of absolutely nothing to recommend it. Avoid this at all costs.

When one is incredibly brilliant, ribbons on turds lose their charm. Although a substandard film, "Casshern" has more to offer: plot, acting and action.
I guess one would have to understand Japanese to truly appreciate this film. However, I'm not, and I enjoyed this movie very much. The music and the imagery is beautiful, as is the message of the film in its entirety, OH! And the visuals were kick-ass!!!
SPL: Sha Po Lang (product link) Crime / Drama I just finished watching this movie for the ninth or tenth time a couple of nights ago and it still maintains the same effect as it did when I first got it over a year ago. It just kicks ass on many, many levels: as a hardboiled cops vs. gangster action flick; as a film about tragedy, twisting fates and the many demensions of family and loyalty; or flat out as a hardcore comeback for contemporary Hong Kong martial arts action movies. There are good fights throughout but two of these fights will put you on your ass: Donnie vs. Wu Jing and of course Donnie vs. the great Sammo Hung. It oozes class with a story told with the integrity of classic literature presented through good cinematography and editing with impressive performances from the entire cast. This movie is a must-own for any true fan of Hong Kong kung fu/action flicks or Asian film fans in general.
You are exactly right. This is a magnificent film. (This should certainly be in technical notes, but here goes: The Chinese mainland print edits out the end of the final fight - quite an omission.)
The man cannot be stopped. Donnie Yen once again chooses too dazzle us and proves that classic Hong Kong action still thrives and amazes. I mean, really, hit after hit: "Seven Swords", then "SPL", then "Dragon Tiger Gate", and now "Flash Point". This player ages like wine. Donnie provides some fresh choreography utilizing a wide range of styles and techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jujitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Chinese boxing, and God knows what else. The movie is just about as good as "SPL", with one exception. In "Flash Point" you only get one grand wall-to-wall throw down of an epic nature whereas in "SPL" you get two. This movie had a good feel and was littered with raw intense moments as well as pretty decent performances from the cast. The end fight was absolutely tight and one of the best within several years, causing it to break into the top 25 all time best end fights (also like "SPL"). This flick is definitely worth your time. I mean, seriously, "That is a tasty burger". If you are interested in end fights done right see the following: "SPL" (duh), "In The Line of Duty 4", "Shanghai Express", "Gorgeous", "Drive", "Fist of Legend", "Dragons Forever", "Who Am I?", "City of Violence", "Lethal Weapon 4", "Freddy vs. Jason", "Final Fantasy: Advent Children", and many others that I can't think of at the moment. Thanks for the time. Later.

I can't agree with rating it as high as SPL, which is a far more accomplished film - but this really is a well constructed thriller which delivers what it promises. ****, but no more.
I liked the film, but compared to Wilson Yip's "SPL" this movie falls flat on originality, the action does not really show until the end. I thought Mr. Yip could of made a remarkable picture, but it just lacks original style.
Donnie Yen is one of the best in the business today. Unlike Jackie and Jet, he's not slowing down yet. It's nice to see him adding the repertoire even after such a long career.
donnie yen is a try hard, he could never match jet li or tony jaa, he is really traying too hard , i think he would not last in a real fight, if all the action star fight for real, i rate bruce lee no.1, jet li no.2, sammo hung no.3, tony jaa no.4, donie
BASTARD RONIN'S COMEBACK- TELL YOUR FRIENDS, SLAP YOUR ENEMIES: Well, it looks like I couldn't stay away. It also looks like many of my predictions about this site regarding fanboys and fangirls came to fruition. I'm sorry but I'm not having it. This site rocks and I will fight for it with tooth, claw, fist, foot and superior reviews from a wider, more experienced and rational perspective. Thankfully, able hands like my boys Jay Lee, Choco, JV47842, Sgt.T and the 8th Sword have been keeping this place in check and up to code but there still seems to be some sort of uprising taking place. I came back to take up arms with my boys and defend the castle from the pretenders and trendsters, the fools and tools and, of course, the tragically retarded. Together we will put an end to the "Like Mees" as well as the dim-witted fangirl revolution. You fools better cover your nuts. Like a roid-ragin' cop who was picked on in high school, I'm ready to whoop some ass. Here comes the first punch...
I decided that I would come back large by reviewing the undisputed champ and all time greatest action movie. Yeah, that's right, I said it. All time, bitches. There are only really two types of people that can reasonably disagree with the previous statement: 1. those that have not seen it and 2. those that do not know what the word action means. I honestly have not met anyone that has seen this film and cannot admit that it is the best action flick around. Ever. This flick packs way more bang for your buck than anything that you have previously encountered in the States. Gratuitous, balletic, wild firefights are interwoven through a well designed story that is pumped full of not only ammunition but stellar performances from an excellent cast. Tony Leung is enigmatic. Chow Yun Fat is a brooding, unhinged wrecking ball. Anthony Wong is fucking Tony Montana. Phillip Kwok is that killa. This is the apex of cop/crime/noir/action entertainment. Saying that the action sequences are phenomenal would actually be making a vast understatement. The action is so plentiful and just unstoppable. Expect a variety of violence goodies involving not just wild gunplay but also quality stunts, explosions when needed and of course one straight up dope throwdown that brings as much hardcore noise as any trigger pull. "Hard Boiled" is the action gift that keeps on giving. Make sure you own this because you are a man and the absence of this in your library could bring that fact into question. This is Bastard Ronin delivering the goods the way you won't shut up about. Light some fires, kids. I'm 'bout to raise hell...

"Hard Boiled" is the root cause of overexcited reviews like this: It must be forgiven, because it is really THAT good.
Haven't been around long enough to agree on the fanboys and girls comments. But you've certainly got the movie nailed. Yes, as action movies go, there is none greater. The true crown jewel of the cinema action experience.
Awesome your back man! I am tired of the one sentence reviews people post. Finally a real reviewer. "Hard-Boiled" is an insane action film. The film is an action fans wet dream. This is classic John Woo gunplay & its amazing. Awesome tht ur back dude.
"An Empress And The Warriors" is a disappointing film for all epic/martial arts film fans. At first I was excited to see an off the wall action and epic movie, that the trailer implied. In the end, I was frusrated and disappointed that I wasted my money on this garbage.
The trailer of the movie was hands down awesome! But don't be fooled by what you saw in the trailer because it is not what you get on-screen. The film is a total chick flick with short and uninspired action sequences for the men. Plus this movie is not a Donnie Yen actioner. He is one of the supporting characters. The main stars of the film are the empress and the medicine man.
There is a lot of sentimental feeling in this movie. And with the sentimental feeling comes cheesy and cliched dialogue, such as "I'll wait for you". And with the cheesy dialogue we get a homemade balloon ride over the forest with some modern, poppy, and romantic song in the background.
The action scenes are rare and brief--we get the empress protecting the medicine man's tree house. The empress in a battle scene. The empress chased in the forest. And the notable action piece, the two-minute battle with Donnie Yen kicking ass. The final action scene has the empress fighting a one on one fight. Though it may seem like a lot, it is not. Again the action pieces are short. There are too many cheesy love scenes.
I cannot recommend this film to anyone. There was bad editing, too many sappy moments, and not enough action. The film is short but there weren't enough thrilling moments. I am giving this film a half star for the Donnie Yen scene, where he fights dozens of men. Again, there is no reason to buy this flick for that one reason because it is short and not too memorable for any DVD collection.
"An Empress And The Warrior" is a chick film with so many corny lines. It's as if the director saw "Titanic" and "Musa: The Warrior", then took the background of "Musa: The Warrior" and the lines from "Titanic", and cut all the action scenes from "Musa" to make a film about an Empress and a medicine man. This film is a waste of time and talent.

This film didn't just disappoint. It actually hurt my feelings.
this review is funny, but your right about everything in it. This film is poorly done. The action was lacking for anybody that is a fan of these flicks- I hear you with this bein a chick film. I wanted an kung fu warfare combat film.- got love instead.
Your points were all right JV47842, The action was little & not enough for any kung fu, war combat fan. I agree, this is also a love story than an action epic. A disappointing movie & the hot air balloon ride wtf. A waste of time.
Agree, with your half star rating. "The Empress And The Warriors" was a terrible film, I expected a martial arts epic but I got a love story instead. The other reviewer is wrong about this movie, the action was not satisfying for any martial arts fan.
This movie is a good movie for purchase. The movie provides several characteristics of war; love, hatered, jealousy, vengence, greed...The list goes on. The movie's action is satisfying and the martial arts is good for warfare combat.
The 2006 Korean gangster picture "A Dirty Carnival" reminds me of Hollywood gangster pictures that James Cagney would star in. Mr. Cagney starred in a lot of crime pictures for Warner Brothers in the 1930's. His character was always some mad gangster lunatic for vengeance. James Cagney's role in "White Heat" reminds me of the starring role of this film.
The story is fascinating, about Byung-du who is a 29-year-old career criminal working for the middle-rank enforcer Sang-chul. Burdened with a terminally ill mother and taking care of younger siblings, Byung-du is feeling financial pressure as a substitute patriarch. When the big boss President Hwang is cornered by a corrupt prosecutor, Byung-du volunteers for a whack job and wins the big man's trust. However, his real trouble begins when friend Min-ho, an aspiring movie director, asks him to be a consultant for the latter's debut film.
The performances from the actors and actresses were wonderfully done. The cast made it look easy, and that is a trick, especially in a movie full of twists and turns.
I absolutely love the score of the picture. It has a classical instrumental French vibe to it, and somehow it fits perfectly in this Korean crime movie. The action--or should I say killings--was realistic and it shows. The punches, kicks, and stabbings were done realistically. There was no Hollywood element to it. The director and writer, Ha Yu, made an excellent gangster movie. “A Dirty Carnival” has beautiful shots. Though it is violent and gritty, Mr. Ha Yu has a great eye of the world. In this film we see two sides: the civilian side of living, and the gangster side of living. It’s an achievement how he captures them both.
“A Dirty Carnival” is the most realistic and violent gangster picture I have ever seen. The performances and story are captivating to watch. The score is amazing. I love this picture.

The pressure was on. I bought this flick because of your review. Kudos. I loved it. Great call.
"Dirty Carnival" has an amazing musical score, it makes the film so alive. This being a gangster film it lets loose of what the audience expects from a gangster film. The film is a real joy & a gem for anybody, its sad tht not enough people have seen it
The Ruins (product link) Horror / Thriller "The Ruins" is a great adaptation of the award-winning horror novel from Scott B. Smith. The author also wrote the suspenseful tale "A Simple Plan".
"The Ruins" is definitely not for the faint of heart. The film is intense and gory. The film also reminds me what a real horror film should be, since mainstream scare flicks are geared towards teenie boppers.
The flick is a real scare, and the atmosphere in the movie is full of tension. If you want a real horror pic, then get this film now.

I tend to avoid US horror because it tends to just bore. But, on this review, I gave it watch and was quite happy with the result. Nice call.
Yojimbo (product link) Drama / Action/Adventure A Classic! A film that has been copied a lot, but nobody can mess with "Yojimbo". It's amazing filmmaking.

When put together with it's counterpart "Sanjuro" it makes for a lethal combination of pure awesome.
I was working at a small-town video store in 1996 when this film snuck out onto VHS without much fanfare. But curious customers rented it, and kept returning the tape with cryptic pronouncements, such as "whoah, that was just plain weird". I had to see what this film was and why it was throwing our customers for a loop.
Upon viewing the film for myself, I could definitely agree that it was weird. It seemed as though the director and cast all had some type of oddball shorthand that was unique to them and them alone. In the context of "normal" movies, it was quite unusual. But in its own context, it totally worked.
There are about 35 different Wilson brothers in the film--maybe even a couple dozen more that I didn't notice--but it's Owen that really steps up and makes his mark here with what has become his trademark overly-sincere buffoonery. Coupled with director Anderson's tendency to focus on the insignificant and the anti-climactic, the result is an impossibly quirky, original, and fun story about a group of pathetic would-be robbers.
In my opinion, this is far and away Anderson's best film. I also loved "Rushmore", but this film is much more innocent and fun. As for Anderson's later films--well, I'd just as soon he keep his mopey, depressed, self-indulgent white people to himself. Stick with the early flix for a quirky good time.

An absolutely fantastic movie. Owen in peak form on this one.
Good review, the movie is fun with a hilarious heist scene that still ignites laughs today. Anderson & Wilson have made an offbeat but priceless movie.
Typhoon (product link) Action/Adventure / Drama Awesome! Watched it three times in two days. Sound effects, make up, scenery, acting--all world class production. No wonder Dreamworks is going to release it in North America. Bravo!
Aragami: The Raging God Of Battle (product link) Martial Arts / Drama As slow as a dead snail, the whole film is virtually set in one location, with a running time of 2 hours+, this film is a hard watch!!! Not much happens, just the 2 main characters talking to each other. Don't waste your time watching this, plucking your finger nails for 2 hours is more exciting!!!

Sounds like you didn't watch the whole thing. The film clocks in at 80 mins, not "2 hours+". And the last 20-30 mins is all action. It's disingenuous to post a review based on only part of a movie.
Mad Detective (product link) Drama / Crime The movie is short but still it has a lot going on in it. This is classic Johnnie To production. The music was haunting and mixed really well with the actors. I really enjoyed this picture a lot.
Mad Detective (product link) Drama / Crime "Mad Detective" is a fantastic piece of work from Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai. Though this is a detective movie, there is no mystery in this flick. But what is notable in this movie is the mad detective, played extremely well by Lau Ching-Wan. He definitely sets the mood in the picture from creepy to pleasantly funny. "Mad Detective" is an enjoyable picture from beginning to end, the pacing was fast and to the point. Though there were no huge gigantic action pieces, it was still a blast to watch a crazy detective.

Lau is so good at what he does. Great to see him really get to show his chops in a character piece like this.
Nowhere To Hide (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime "Nowhere To Hide" is a favorite film of mine. It has a balance of everything from action to comedy to drama. The story is simple--a hard boiled Korean cop tries to catch a killer--but it was refreshing and stylish thanks to director and writer Myung-se Lee. The film looks amazing, scene after scene was gorgeusly shot. There are a lot of references in this film, from its "Once Upon A Time In the West" music to its "The Third Man" style ending. The cast was also a colorful bunch, the main lead was brilliant as an off-the-wall, hard-ass detective. There are great action pieces which are fast and innovative. I can't get say this enough but this film has a lot of style. Tarantino, watch out.

Love this. It's likely going to go in the regular rotation. The 'Bee Gees' scene is brilliant.
Mad Detective (product link) Drama / Crime Simply put, one more fantastic To film. It is great to see Lau Ching-Wan working with To again--an immensely engaging performance is given by Lau. Surprisingly, the soundtrack is a bit spare. To's usual flair for marrying image and music has been greatly subdued. That is certainly not a bad thing, just that I had expectations of a score along the lines of EXILED. In short, if you've enjoyed a majority of Milkyway's output, then this film is a must-buy.
Typhoon (product link) Action/Adventure / Drama This is the best action film I have seen for 2007 so far. I heard that Dreamworks is bringing this to the U.S and for every good reason. Jang Dong-gun again proves that he is one of the best Korean and Asian actor out there today. It is very rare when you have a movie that has both great Action and a great plot mixed together. See get this movie now cause you never know if they end up cutting parts of the film. American companies has a bad habit of doing that.

I get scared when we try to re-make an asian film-even if the director is involved. But at least we have this version. . .and it's killer.
This is a well-acted, phenomenally well-filmed police chase story which makes no pretense of covering the procedural aspects of the case. How did they know where person A was? It doesn't matter: Chase him! Who told them about person B? Well...I don't know: beat him! There is no suggestion the police are even any good at their jobs, but they can run, and they can swing a club, and they can stand in the rain (of which there is much, and which is beautifully filmed). The cast is extremely good. Park Joong-Hoon, as Detective Woo, looks like a moron, but he's definitely the hero of the picture - endlessly persistent, smarter than he looks, and tougher than any man in the room. Jang Dong-Gun looks like he should be the hero, rather than a junior detective, but he also gives a fine performance - showing more sensitivity than one would expect in this genre. Ahn Sung-Kee, as the villain being sought throughout the film, may not have ever given a disappointing performance in his whole career. Although he has very few lines, he dominates the film and is sure to be remembered when the picture is finished. I had recently seen him in two other films, and I had to read the credits to realize it was the same actor in all three: Although he is physically recognizable in each film, he seems like entirely different people. If I knew he were in another film, I wouldn't need much more information before buying it!

One of the great strengths of this film is that it doesn't feel the need to spoon feed the audience every mundane "Law and Order"-esque detail. Makes the pace quicker and the film more intelligent.
Jean-Pierre Melville's "Army of Shadows" is a masterpiece. I could end my review there, but that won't tempt the casual viewer on watching a movie about the French resistance. I have seen a lot of films about resistance fighters, but each of those films will never ever come close to this amazing work. Mr. Melville is a genius, he has updated the gangster genre with "Le Samouraï" and "The Red Circle" in hyped-up, pop culture adaptations which still excite viewers today. "Army of Shadows" works as a gangster picture. In gangster films the characters often don’t speak like normal citizens. They live by their own rules and laws--to them it’s freedom, but for the audience it seems as if they're trapped in their own world. There are many films that capture people in their unique lifestyle--such films as “The Godfather” or “Goodfellas”--but nobody has taken it to the extreme such as this French 1969 lost gem.
Americans were not privileged to see this classic picture until 2005. Upon its initial release, the movie was banned because of an uproar in Vietnam. Though the movie is set in World War II, the story could work for any generation. The film is based upon Joseph Kessel's classic novel about French resistance fighters' lives and how they kept their cool amongst their enemies. The novel was also about traitors and the paranoia of being caught. Director Jean-Pierre Melville gave a lot of input to this film for he was a resistance fighter too. He knew the risks that every fighter took.
The score is amazing and catchy, it makes the film so vibrant. Johnnie To had updated the score for his bodyguard masterpiece “The Mission”. "Army of Shadows" and "The Mission" share a lot of resemblance. Johnnie To claims to be Melville's biggest fan--he tributes his work in many of his movies. If it's not the catchy theme he takes, then he references Melville’s coolness of characters. The list of talent that admire Mr. Melville's phenomenal work goes on and on. It amazes me how a French director made such an influential impact on movies and people today.
“Army of Shadows” is a gritty film about real people and their war. The movie may not have epic gun battles or fights, but the film relies on its characters and their ongoing battle with the enemy. The story plays as a suspenseful cat and mouse game with danger at every corner.
The film is an ignition of daring moments and it’s courageous that resistance fighters would go the extreme for their country. Jean-Pierre Melville has directed a movie that demands to be seen by everyone. The picture is worth every penny, and especially in today’s society the film will question your portrayal for your country. What is a patriot? And would you risk your life for others?

Great review. I've always tried debating whether I like this or Le Samourai more. But in the end, who cares? They're both great. Masterpiece pretty much sums it up.
Melville is a class act director, his work is brilliant & flawless. "Army Of Shadows" is a prime example why films are made today. The film is perfect. Great review
Oh yeah, that hit the spot. One of the best heist movies to date and based on a true story no less. Crazy, man, crazy. Yes that was me quoting King Louie from "The Jungle Book"--what of it? Anyway, man-cub, "The Bank Job" is that rare combination of a cast and crew with rythmic, perfect synergy. Every situation and character played off the other with flawless precision and timing. Needless to say this made for some first-class acting performances from the whole cast. There was a good degree of bumbling, chance and circumstance that fueled the plot in a way that grounded it and actually made it feel more real. The main characters (a motley crew of low-rent hoods) further solidified this feel by being portrayed in a realistic yet mildly stylized manner, which created a bunch of people that are like some people you probably know. This movie was just about perfectly balanced. It's got a little something for everyone: great drama, slick and grimy noir-crime stuff, some well placed humor, and some exciting action and violence that includes a scene with some pretty decent fighting toward the end of the film. (Had to mention it, I know what you folks like. I can dig it--violence is the shit. At least I got the common decency to come right out and say it rather than pretend to be some highly "evolved", snob, vegetarian, scared-to-throw a damn punch, hippie-ass, wanna-be scholar motherfucker.)
Of course we all realize that a film needs to have a well developed plot and characters as well as a diligent director to be of any true value, but, let's face it, some well placed and relevant sex and violence can always add a little more fun. Sue me for keeping it real. If you are about your crime-caper movies you need to check this out. This is an excellent film and is keeping in the tradition of highly entertaining crime/noir/caper flicks coming from the Brits.
RECOMMENDED VIEWING: If you dig this flick check out "Lock Stock And 2 Smoking Barrels","Snatch" and of course the truly bad-ass "Layer Cake". Gangster, bitches.

The movie was alright not perfect. The movie felt sloppy. It was like a B-movie caper film from the old days. The movie is overhyped w/ loud music & annoying characters. I personally thought "In Bruges" was the best film tht started 08 w/ a bang.
All right movie. The director's style of work seemed to showy as if he was trying to make do to the flat cast & crew. The film would of been better as a documentary. The movie fails because the story is everywhere but the truth.
Great review. The movie has everything 4 any caper junkie, it's also amazing tht this whole tale was a true story. The movie is chaotic (in a good way) it has tons of great characters w/ great lines. Roger Donaldson style of film making is also good.
Whenever I watch a Quentin Tarantino film, it's a journey through time. A Tarantino film can mash decades upon decades and still give a crowd-pleasing movie. The director is very talented, he mixes genres and puts cult icons among pop culture. There is only a handful of directors that can do it so well, and plus with today's generation; films are often remakes or adaptations of comics. Though Tarantino takes material from films that he enjoys, it feels different because he is not stealing the material. He's basically capturing the material in his own point of view.
It was April 2007 and I spent almost three and a half hours in a darkened theater room full of fan boys and girls. The event of this elbow-to-elbow show was "Grindhouse", one of the best movie experiences I have ever had. It's great to be in a room full of people that have the same taste in films, it makes any movie venture amazing. The film that most of the screaming fans were waiting for was "Death Proof", and it was a complete joy as soon as the title came to the screen. The film of course started with a foot fetish galore, because it is a Tarantino film.
There's is a lot of debate that this film has two halves, to me this is just another grind house experience. "Death Proof" starts off with disc jockey talk leading to bar talk. Plus a cameo from gore hound Eli Roth as a drunken partier. The film doesn't really kick into high gear until the presence of Kurt Russell's creepiness at the bar. His role of "Stuntman Mike" is funny, offbeat, and scary. The true stars of the film are muscle cars, a 1970 Chevy Nova and a 1969 Dodge Charger. The car gave Stuntman Mike's momentum to actually cause true danger, without the car he's basically harmless but still creepy. I believe it's the car that makes someone a bad ass, and without it you lose all the bad ass appeal. The same theory goes with the man with a gun, without the gun he better know some kung fu, and if he doesn't know he's screwed.
"Death Proof" is a wild ride, the last half switches gears from creepy Kurt Russell to playful Russell. Plus the stunt work from Zoe Bell is jaw breaking. The car chase is great and it never slows down, with wonderful dialogue that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The film's ending is the best I've seen from 2007. "Death Proof" is a true grind house experience mixing horror, car chases, car crashes, foot fetishes, women out for revenge, stereotypes, amazing stunt work, catchy dialogue, and a nice score. This movie has it all.
Good review dude, the movie is great- it has everything for anybody. There is a lot of people that dislike this movie, but hey the director is a true fan boy making movies for the true fans.
I had never played a single final fantasy game ever yet the trailers for it looked cool. Many told me that I would not get the movie or enjoy it fully if I had never played the game. Don't believe the hype. If you watch anime or mystery noir then you are used to putting together a grand story with minimal information but regardless if you pay attention to the movie it is easy to follow. However if for some reason you still can't get what's going on at least you can enjoy other things the movie has to offer- such as some of the most phenomenally extraordinary action and fight sequences ever crafted and put onto disc. After watching this movie I became disappointed with every Jedi or mutant or super soldier I had already encountered. Final Fantasy 7 blows away almost every action or sci fi/fantasy film you have ever seen. I can't help but thinking that this is how the star wars prequels should have been. It has something for every kind of action fan. Gunplay, violent chase scenes, meta human style fist fights with healthy portions of martial arts, kick-ass sword fights? All present and accounted for. If you are a sci fi/fantasy or action fan get it, watch it and spread the word.

I love the video game series, I thought the movie was good-like 3 and half or 4 stars good. I thought it could of introduced the characters in a better way.
Great review. A lot of the fanboys has issues with it because it wasn't exactly what they wanted. As a huge FF fan I thought it was amazing. The soundtrack alone is worth a watch.
Bullet In The Head (product link) Action/Adventure / War My favorite John Woo film! The bullet ballet still amazes me till this day. "Bullet In The Head" is an action fanatic's dream, you have everything in this movie: wild guns, explosions, Mexican stand-offs, and John Woo's two-gun trademark. Though with all those action scenes and style, the story is very emotional--you're with these characters even when you leave the movie. "Bullet In The Head" is a great movie!

Not my personal favorite (but high on the list). Certainly Woo's most emotional and dark film. This one grabbed me pretty hard the first time I viewed it. And all-time classic.
many people prefer a Better Tomorrow, The Killer, or Hard Boiled, but this is also my favorite. I could never figure out why it hasn't received a proper release in the U.S.
The City Of Violence (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime I love this movie! A bloody roar of revenge in Korea. It's an amazing movie about two men who want answers to there friend's death. It takes them on a wild journey filled with insane characters, from gangsters to teenage sports players. "City of Violence" has great direction and an awesome soundtrack, with likeable main characters and an amazing last action scene. The fights are simply amazing.
The fight scene were amazing, I do agree, but it was how the director shot those amazing fight scenes. it seemed to me like the director wanted to show how good he was as a director and not a directing a martial arts movie. Watch this movie again.
