| OK. You may think 5 stars is a bit absurd for a Jackie Chan film, but while the Myth does certainly contain that element, it really should be a film starring Jackie Chan in a role no one has seen to date.
What I loved about this film is that, for Jackie, its completely new-he is acting, yes, actually acting, like the best method actors around, as a Qin General-not simply Jackie Chan. He really emotes the the suffering he endures, and its believable. It works so well for his abilities without sacrificing character integrity.
The Myth also tells a storie-not just 'lets see what stunts he does this time around'-it tells the story of General Meng Yi, the Qin emperors Korean concubine, Ok Soo, and the events between them and the death of the first Qin emperor. The perspective is very creative with Jackie living the life of the general through flashbacks in dreams, and trying to make sense of them and discover the truth in the present. While the 'present' in the film is more of a Jackie style film, the pace is strong, it doesnt waiver despite a somewhat weak ending, but all around its a film that will really surprise you if you are expecting the standard Jackie Chan formula. Of course, if he did this more often-imagine the possibilities-you get good drama and still some amazing fights and stunts. Stanley Tong did an excellent job with locations, directing, editing, and even the score. |
