"Crime Story" was based on a true story of the kidnapping of Teddy Wang, a Hong Kong multi-billionaire. The film is considered to be fairly accurate, although director Kirk Wong had to make some changes and the police would not release a lot of information on the case. Wong still tried to portray the events as accurately as he could--for example, the location of the kidnapping in the film was very close to the real event. It has also been said that the original ending of the billionaire drowning was likely his real fate, but was changed to a happy ending at the request of his widow, Nina Wang, who owned the cineplexes.
"Crime Story" was also Chan's first film based on a true story and one of his first major dramatic roles. The action was also pretty good as Chan took more of a streetfighting approach and showed no sign of his normal lighthearted sense of humor which is probably why some fans do not like this film. There was a lot of intensity in the fighting and Chan and his stunt team took many nasty falls. The explosions and fires were also well done as the old Kowloon walled city was burned and leveled.
The acting throughout the film was very good as Jackie Chan more than proved he can pull off this type of role. Kent Chang was great as always as police inspector/kidnapper Hung. It was also amazing how actor Law Kar Ying and actress Au-Yeung Pooi San looked like the real Teddy and Nina Wang.
I think this is a good film that allowed Jackie Chan to take on a new and challenging role that could be used as an example to critics who think Chan cannot act or take dramatic roles as he progresses in age.

Superb quality work from Jackie and Kent Cheung! Ashley the world is not black or white. As you go through life you will find a lot of gray. There are times when "the truth" will only kill more people. What little was left out did not change the story.
Jackie Chan and Kent Chang were excellent in this police drama. I agree with you on Chan silencing his critics for this particular dramatic role. Jackie was also good in " The New Police Story"!
The movie was such a disappointment because in order to tell a true story the audience needs a true story of what actually happened. The action in the film was good but the truth of the story should have been told.
Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In America" is a classic and flawless tale. Sadly, this was Sergio Leone's final picture which completed his American trilogy starting with "Once Upon A Time In The West", and "Duck, You Sucker". The film is simply magnificent--every frame is breathtaking and moving.
The film was adapted from Harry Grey's inspiring book "The Hoods", about Jewish mobsters in 1920's New York. It's astonishing to me that Mr. Grey wrote this modern classic while he was in prison in the 1950's. Mr. Leone took his work and made it beautiful with an outstanding epic feeling to it. This being Mr. Leone's last movie, it was a lot darker than his other movies. The violence was more dangerous and bitter than watching the man with no name trilogy. But there was still beauty in this movie--somehow Sergio Leone always knew how to accomplish that. It makes me wonder how he made the west gorgeous and with this film the city slums into a dream-like setting. The score adds shades of beauty done amazingly by Ennio Morricone and the emsemble cast was a delight.
This is a 5-star perfect movie about a haunting tale of friends and the mob. It's simply perfect.

5 stars is not quite enough. This is a great film.
The film is a mess, it has talent but it does not go anywhere. As a reviewer you should write a detail description on why you enjoyed it because this review is inaccurate & a disgrace to true film fans.
Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai (product link) Art / Drama You people need to get aware. There was only one review for this and it sucked. Pay attention, folks, damn. Anyhow, this flick has cult king written all over it. I rarely disagree with the HKFlix evalutation of a movie but they were unreasonably hard on this one. This movie is actually quite brilliant and probably tied with "Throw Down" for best adaption of the samurai code and methodolgy to a contemporary setting in films.
"Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" is evenly distributed entertainment that is filled with great performances from a diverse and talented cast, timeless quotes from the "Hagakure" (the book of the samurai), laugh-out-loud humor and good portions of gunfire. You won't be bored for one minute if you have any kind of an attention span at all. Intelligent, provocative, funny and highly entertaining I would recommend this film to anyone.

I'd rate this slightly lower, but you are basically correct.
JJ is a director you either love or you get put to sleep. I was expecting an action flick, to my first viewing was a disappointment. Once I removed my expectations and gave it more viewings I saw what it was doing. A cameo from RZA to top it off.
This movie tried to hard to explore a character's mind set. The movie didn't not go anywhere, 4 an art picture is was just bland. The movie as a whole was not clear on wht kind of story it wanted 2 tell-therefor the actors we're distracted in their roles
The film does entertain but it's mostly for the people that are into the samurai pictures. I love samurai movies but when they modernize it, I just can't get into that stuff.
The movie was all right, I think the performances were good- I just couldn't get that much involved with it though. The movie is not for everyone, I guess I came with high expectations going in. Tht is 1 mistake tht nobody should do in a pic such as this.
Hey thnks for the comments, your right I only had one review. I thought "Ghost Dog" was an entertaing pic but it's not my taste. The film is well shot but compared to "Throwdown" that was amazing.
i just read the comment you left kungfumaniac and i'm totally with you on that one i think the reviewer in question is fubar if you dont know what that means watch tango and cash.
I agree man. This is Jim Jarmusch's vision of the samurai code, the film is entertaining. Check out Jean-Pierre Melville "Le Samouraï" it's a 1967 hitman film, the guy follows the code too. It's Johnnie To's fave film, & John Woo models his films from it.
I love how this movie begins. It puts the audience right in the middle of a deteriorating town. We watch two dirty men walking the streets and the only thing that is on their mind is food. The dust storm in the opening scenes adds a great effect that the town is rotting. At first sight it seems as if there is no hope for anybody in this town. When the story progresses, the story is full of hope. Director Kihachi Okamoto is very talented at shifting the scenery from a character's expression. Mr. Okamoto has done that with “The Sword Of Doom”. The character in that movie was in a fury of revenge so he added lightning and thunder for added effects. Kihachi Okamoto has always been an inspiration of mine, because he knows how to make a solid story into something more.
The story is taken from the novel “Peaceful Days”, written by Shugoro Yamamoto. The novel was also the source for Kurosawa’s "Sanjuro" and "Yojimbo". This is the closest adaptation of Yamamoto’s novel. It’s great to see what writer Akira Murao and director Okamoto were inspired by.
“Kill!” is about two men. Genta has given up the samurai code, and Hanjiro is a farmer masquerading as a samurai. They stumble upon seven dimwitted samurai who murder a vassal of the Shogun on behalf of a local boss named Chamberlain Ayuzawa.
The samurai send Genta to their boss to inform him of the success of their mission. Hanjiro goes to Ayuzawa to get a job, and to become a real samurai. Hanjiro’s mind and heart are tested because in order to become a samurai, he has to kill Genta.
It amazes me how the characters' lives in the movie intervene. They have goals, and they could easily be accomplished, but whatever road you choose there are always consequences. The movie does go in depth in that department, but the film also offers a lot of laughs. The humor in the movie is well added, each line or action is done well and right on cue. This is a also a witty samurai movie. With that being said, the movie feels fresh and intelligent, as if it was made today.
“Kill!” is a movie that can work for any audience. The genre is an action-adventure story, but it adds drama and laughter, which makes it feel like an “every person kind of film“. I am astonished how good this picture is and how it paces itself into a truly amazing samurai picture.
Absolutely a perfect review for this phat-ass movie. Informative and entertaining. This film is on my top 25 samurai films of all time list. Actually more like top 15. Keep em' comin, player.
CONTROVERSIAL REVIEW WARNING: What I got to say ain't nice. To be fair this review is for the American version of the film as I have not seen the uncut version. I would like to remind you that the exits are on both sides of the aisles. Should any danger above water present itself, the person sitting next to you can be used as a flotation device. Now just relax and enjoy the ride. Please assume crash positions.
I was cheated. I was robbed. Just about any amount of money you paid to see this movie that exceeds four U.S. dollars is a vicious ripoff. Was the fight sequence with the ladder phenomenal? Absolutely. Was that pretty much the only thing worthwhile in this flick? Absolutely. This movie brings shame to the immensely entertaining "Police Story" series by skimping on the fu and fight scenes. Of course there is an underwater fight at the end--meaning slow and lacking the type of dynamic aesthetics we have come to expect from a Jackie film. "First Strike" basically is a meandering, through-the-motions, on auto-pilot Jackie film. Perhaps I was mildly entertained at random throughout, but for the most part I just can't justify giving a movie that I only appreciated for one fight scene more than one and a half stars. Sorry but this is only for strict Jackie completists. I love Jackie just like you folks. That's why this film doesn't do it for me. He's better than that.
Do me a favor: at the next wedding you attend slap a bridesmaid on the ass during the ceremony. If you are questioned on this just tell them you got the idea from a bastard. Enjoy your movies, kids.

Speaking only of the Dimension release, this is correct.
I'm a big JC fan but the American version is a mess, but a 2 star mess for me. Try the uncut version and you'll like this film better, the problem with Dimension film releases of JC movies is the constant cutting of scenes deemed not worthy! Shame!
I saw the American cut in theaters in the late 90's. I finally got to see the original version a few years after and it was worth it. The American Cut works though it's still fun for any Jackie Chan fan.
This Jackie Chan feature has terrific stunts & a nice fight scene thrown in the middle. The action was really impressive. Though it is cheesy, it has the Mr. Chan charm. JC antics are always impressive, he's funny & fun- the film is a blast.
"Police Story 4" has a wild set-up, the movie was good. It had nice stunts, a classic ladder fight, & the under-water fight was clever. The movie was fun, and it still manages to entertain.
Seven Swords (product link) Martial Arts / Swordplay/Sword(s) How could one review a movie such as "Seven Swords", and try to be brief but still be fully expressive of the enjoyment, and satisfaction one will feel when they view a movie that shows the Western cinema world the Asian market has surpassed them. You want an epic movie of blockbuster capacity? Or maybe you're looking for a film that merges old - school with tommorrow's stars. Here one will own a movie that will forever be a favorite. One will watch this movie and save it...not for a rainy day! No...that does it no justice. Save it, to forget the beautiful martial arts, exciting plot/story and wonderful choreography, save it, to only re - live that same elating experience, where the back of your chair becomes your seat...and your seat becomes your foot rest. Save it, for a good day to only get better. Suggest...NO! I demand one to add this to their repertoire.

Valid points, good review..maybe a half star less. Ignore those who have no knowledge of film Asian Wu xia or the world in general.
i can understand how this film got more than 2 stars. There were so many involuntary humorous moments, so much pretense, .... I think Tsui Hark should stick to producing
I am saying no because I do not know which version you are referring to. The international version is a mess, it slaps together with no ease & a lot of confusion. The original cut of the film has a better story telling & the pace is fantastic.
Being a warlord amongst your blood brothers is a tough line of business. "The Warlords" is an epic movie, epic in scope, sound, set design and cast. The film is also a remake of a Shaw Brothers classic movie "Blood Brothers". Why remake that? Anyways, "The Warlords" is another epic war/costume flick--I've seen so many of these films, now with "The Warlords" it just looks like all the other war movies we've seen in the past. This film really does not showcase the war, there are only about three action scenes and they were not exciting. You'll also find the sappy emotional war music that we've all heard before. This movie is not about the war, it's about the characters. The cast is simply perfect for this movie, but if you're expecting a violent style action war epic you're in the wrong movie. Watch the flick for the acting, because it's another period piece. But then again we've seen films like this before.

This film is not just like every war film. I can't agree with any of the snide negative comments. How much more freaking violence is required? Some people have no clue.
Agree- we've seen this all before but in better films, people only like this film because they have a crush on Jet Li, but this film is same old same old-nothing original in it.
will since you so picky, why don't you make a film like that? we never get enough of jet li, that's the reason we see this film, if you are better than him, why don't you proof it????
There are a lot of reasons to love this movie. The first is because this is the type of movie that would never get made in America, at least not without some serious revisions. Second, I wish my high school was like this. Sure, it was a big sausage fest, but it certainly would be fun.
Having grown up thinking that John Hughes films were the best possible outcome for high school, and seeing the current high school experience captured as a Disney musical or stupid, forgettable, comedies, "Crows Zero" gives a new perspective on the "coolest possible" high school experience.
"Crows Zero" is about the new guy in town trying to get to the top of his high school class. But instead of getting good grades or being the quarterback with the cheerleader girlfriend, it's all about who can mobilize the best student army and pound the snot out of everyone else. But, being a Takashi Miike film ("Sukiyaki Western Django", "Ichi", "Izo", "DOA"), it's gonna' be more than a fistfight.
"Crows" is based on a multi-million selling manga. It basically takes all the conflicts and angst that you find in high school and externalizes them. Instead of stupid pranks or getting stuffed in a garbage can or trying to make the best grades or trying to get a varsity letter, it all comes down to how well you can brawl. The "School of Crows" is known for being the toughest school in Japan, and if you can survive--better yet, rise to the top--you can be whatever you want.
It's a cool premise. One that could quickly degenerate into an adolescent orgy of senseless violence or could just come off very cheesy. But Miike brings depth to the characters. Despite everyone dressing in black, they all have their own distinctive styles (and it looks cool as hell). And everyone broods really well. I mean, it's an old-school James Dean, Brando kind of brood. Nowadays our emo generation in the US tries to brood, but it's just pouting and whining. In Miike's hands it's stylistic and effective and makes you want to adopt a perma-scowl next time you leave the house.
Although the main character's run at the top is the primary story, there are a few side-stories involving peripheral characters that keep the movie from being two-dimensional and shallow. You get a sense of the kind of world where this story could take place, and the types of people that inhabit it (hint: it's a pretty cool world).
Character, story, depth, and the action is great. No showy choreography here, everything is a straight-up brawl. Think "Fight Club" turned up to 11, fueled by out-of-control teenage testosterone. Every time a fist connects with a face, you feel it. The sound and camerawork make every punch and kick feel epic. Every hit counts. And everything is captured in the very-stylistic Miike way.
So who's gonna like this movie? The anime and manga crowd should dig it. It definitely keeps its feel as a manga-made-real. Those who were into "Battle Royale" and the contemporary, Japanese, teenage, ultraviolence. I don't think this film is mature enough to appeal to the drama audience, despite having some fantastic characters and story elements. Die-hard martial arts fans should probably pass. If you like that cool Asian style with some hardcore brawling action, all done by a top-notch production team and cast, equalling a movie that oozes nonchalant cool without forgetting to be fun, you'll be a "Crows" fan, guaranteed.

It took me forever to finally check this out but you are so right. There are a lot of reasons to love this movie. I think I'm a fan for life now.
Crows Zero is one for the pop culture. I have read the Manga series, which I love. The movie is just to forceful. It does have good direction & action but as a whole I felt a little let down.
A very interesting entry from those wacky folks with snotty accents whom we call the French (sometimes we call them worse). "B13" has high energy and excellent momentum that carries through. There are some excellent acrobatics and martial arts techniques in this film, and it's nice to see a halfway decent exhibition of Parkour (a French psuedo-martial art that is really kind of a knockoff of Peking opera performers' acrobatic tricks in kung fu flicks--i.e. Jackie, Sammo, Yuen, Yuen, Yuen, Yuen, etc. style). Very entertaining and a fun ride. Although, I have to make a side note. The film is only a four star movie the first time you see it. Each additional viewing is more like three and a half stars, as the pace is very good but if you were to evaluate it more thoroughly you will notice it is actually quite short in the fight department. Your first viewing will sort of trick you with its good pacing, fun chase scenes and hyper active filming style, but the fights that are present are quite enjoyable and worth checking out (even though I think that there might only be two of them). Get it just to give your fu collection more diversity. You got plenty of Chinese stuff, a bunch of Japanese stuff, some good Korean stuff, that cool German one, you might as well just have to make room for some more fu from the frogs. The French, I mean. I said French. I got to cut out, Interpol has found me again. Where the hell am I gonna hide all this crap?
The plot is thin and the acting barely competent, but I don't care: The parkour, fighting and general energy level make this a very fun movie to watch.
You also got a Chile fu film "Kiltro", plus I saw a Denmark fu movie called "Fighter". It's amazing how martial arts styles influence other countries. If we all knew fu, the world would be peaceful. B:14 is in pre-production get ready for more.
Everyone and their mommas got to review this flick so pretty much everything that can be said about this flick has been said already. I guess I shouldn't even bother. Wait a minute, screw that, I want a piece too.
A lot of folks seem to think that this is one of the greatest kung fu movies of all time. Those folks know what they are talking about. This ball of thunder laced lightning hits rougher and heavier than a Kimbo Slice uppercut. We all know the deal and we all know who's in it. The real eternal question is: which match-up is sicker? Jet vs. Yasuaki Kurata, or Jet vs. Billy Chow? There's a stumper for you. They both rock so hard that if you bring up this question among your friends who are into fu flicks it will usually spark a pretty wild debate. I personally lean slightly toward the Jet/Yasuaki showdown. Something about wind and blindfolds--it just gets me going, dude.
"Fist Of Legend" is possibly the closest thing to perfect fight choreography around (perfect is relative, but honestly it might be perfect) and incorporates many martial art styles, such as Longfist, Ditang Chuan, Tong Bei, Chin Na, Aikido, Karate, boxing, Judo, Jujitsu, and quite a few more that I am probably forgetting. I know some cats say that the general was using Muay Thai. They have either poor eyesight or just improper schooling. Billy's just busting out with hardcore Karate.
This movie is the dope shit and every last one of you know it. If you haven't seen it, you better head for the hills, son, because we will hunt you down and staple you to something so we can force you to see this awesome piece of kung fu cinema history. You'll probably thank us afterwords and maybe even offer us a beer. And we'll accept. 'Cause we like beer. Keep kicking for the stars, folks. I'll be around.

didn't like it as much has some cuz I hate remakes but this is the schitzer, ACHTUNG! :)
I've seen a lot of reviews for "Fist of Legend" this week. I am pumped for the Dragon Dynasty release. This is one of the best kung fu movies ever made, I still remember watching it in theaters-it was a great experience.
Millionaires' Express (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts What a big disappointment--I mean, literally everybody and their momma was in this movie. And this movie was like this!!!! WOW, you got to see it to believe it. Because this film, especially at this budget, should have been the best movie in history for all martial arts movie lovers. This movie, as slow as it was, could not make up for the lost time of the final scene. I am very, very unhappy right now.

You are right on the spot MAN!!!! What a disappointment.
You gave Forbidden Kingdom 3 stars and this you only gave 2 and half. Are you serious? this movie is great, did you see the fight scenes. I don't think you saw the movie.
Whenever Millionaires' Express is brought up in a discussion among fu fans there is always 2 sides- people tht love it or hate it. I found the film fun & enjoyed the fights. The fights at the end are terrific. & the stars being silly is always nice.
I have to disagree. The last twenty or thirty minutes is one long, beautifully chaotic, explosive fight-fest. I found the filler between fights to be more compelling than most kung fu movies. I'll admit, some of the comedy antics are over-done.
Nope. You seem to be disregarding how well done and plentiful the action is toward the end. I also thought that there was enough humor and plot development throughout the film the keep things interesting.
I agree that the film was a let down, but I do think it had a lot of really cool fights and stunts in it. It was a bit bloated and meandering, but if you can look past that, I think you'll find the action to be quite enjoyable and noteworthy.
First and foremost, this is a western. It is set in Japan and stars an all Japanese cast, save for one lone American cameo. I'll keep it under wraps for the few that don't want to know or haven't run across it. But it's a cool and appropriate cameo. Without saying too much about the story, it's basically about a lone rider who comes into town to help the locals when two warring gangs overrun the town looking for rumored treasure.
The all Japanese cast speaks in almost entirely English throughout the entire film. Once you get used to it you can make out what they're saying. But some will struggle at first. Since most are not native speakers, it sounds as if they learned their lines phonetically, without any knowledge of English. It makes for some odd cadences and pauses. To be honest, I kind of enjoyed it. It seemed like a fun and interesting idea. It just adds to the genre-bending of the whole film.
While the film is a western, it successfully balances the fine line between serious western and stylish action/comedy. Some may feel uneasy because it never settles into one or the other. Some very serious and heavy moments can be immediately followed by one of the over-the-top characters doing some schtick. Personally, I thought it flowed well and maintained the balance. Some reviewers have called it confused. In my opinion, I enjoy movies that refuse to be defined and just be what they should.
As well as being a western on its face, Django also has many elements of the old Kurosawa samurai flicks (one is even referred to in the film). The original film series "Django" is also homaged numerous times.
The action is slick and well paced--very stylish and creative in some areas, comedic in others, and once in a while just downright rough and tumble. Those looking for an all-out Asian action flick may be a little disappointed by the film's pace. It is paced like a spaghetti western: deliberate and dramatic. When the action comes, it is explosive and will not disappoint. But the scenes in-between aren't just vehicles to take us to the next gunfight. There is a narrative, there is character development, there are backstories and conflicts that are born and resolved.
"Django" is a very complete and entertaining film. The spoken language and genre-bending will challenge some viewers while alienating others altogether. But for those interested in the genre who don't mind something a little different, "Django" is a solid pick.

I can't get past the abysmal line reading. The visuals are pretty good.
The OUATIC series is about the adventures of Wong Fei Hung, a Chinese folk hero. This character pops up a lot (as a child in "Iron Monkey", Jackie Chan's character in the "Drunken Master" series). Each portrayal is very different and most aren't based but on the slightest detail to the actual historical character. But that aside, here's what the movies are really about:
Yes, Jet Li's character struggles with a Hong Kong overrun with British imperialists and the woman who loves him and all the drama that follows and, honestly, no one really cares. The story is an odd mix. When there aren't action sequences, much of the story plays out like a routine period piece. The story is decent and worth a look, but subsequent viewings will have you simply skipping ahead to the action sequences because...
...these are simply the best collection of HK/kung fu/wire fu fight sequences you will ever find. You have an actor at the top of his kung fu game with choreographers who are given a lot of freedom and creativity to use the actors' talents, all captured by a director at the peak of his powers. These fight sequences are the stuff of legend, the yardstick that all kung fu fights are measured against. Not to take anything away from other flicks of Jet's like "Fist Of Legend" or "Fong Sai Yuk", but these are the best. And to get them all in one package for such a cheap price is nothing short of criminal. I paid a small fortune to get these three films from HK before this version was released.
You'll see some of the most innovative and intense wirework, skill, and choreography you've ever witnessed, stuff that makes "The Matrix" look tame by comparison, despite coming out years before the Wachowskis ever put word one to paper. Every scenario you can imagine is captured, Jet vs. one, Jet vs. some, Jet vs. many, Jet with weapons, Jet with bare hands, Jet with props like an ubrella, Jet vs. flaming arrows, Jet vs. boss characters in the most insane environments you can imagine. I can't stress it enough, this is as good as it gets. Even skipping over the story, the fight scenes will entertain you and your next several generations long after you're gone. Simple as that. If you're into kung fu flicks and somehow have slept on this one, just buy it.

I and II are great, and III is flawed only in comparison to I and II. This rating is appropriate.
I completely feel you on this one. Coincidently my all time favorite Jet Li movie is a tie between the first "Once Upon A Time In China" film and "Fist Of Legend". Great reviews, man. Cool to have another reviewer with skills and sense in the mix.
Let me start out by saying, I love this movie. It is absolutely fantastic. It's like Kitamura, the director, poked around inside my brain for my two favorite cult/indie/action/gore faves and put them together. Because this film could not be a more perfect combination of "Six String Samurai" meets "Evil Dead 2", with a bunch of martial arts action thrown in. I absolutely love these types of films. This is not one of those "universally" fantastic films that anyone can appreciate. This is most certainly one of those 'specialty' flicks that only people with very specific types of tastes will love. But if you have those 'tastes', you will absolutely be amazed by this film. It really is a love it or hate it movie. First, let's briefly touch on what its about:
A former prisoner tries to escape from an enchanted forest teeming with zombies and demons, all the while protecting a girl while kicking, punching, shooting, stabbing, and slicing everything that gets in his way.
For those who are looking at the different versions, the Ultimate is the only version to get. The new music is a big improvement over the old stuff. The extended action scenes are fantastic. And the new color correction and visual processing definitely add to the overall film. Plus, all the extras are great. Ironically, this is actually more of a director's cut than the original director's cut. The original DC was just the best the director could do with what he had. Ultimate Versus actually had Kitamura going back out and shooting new scenes and extended fight sequences to cut into the original DC. Now that we've cleared that up...
This is not a film for everyone. In fact, this isn't even a film for most. This is definitely a niche film for those that love movies that are just fun, cheesy, completely unrealistic, and straight-up awesome. To most, this film is just a bunch of people running through a forest for 2 hours with some cheesy acting, lots of senseless violence, and more blood than your local Red Cross has on hand. Yes, they do run through the forest the whole movie, but it's so epic. The characters all have their "cool" turned way up, more than you would in any 'regular' film, but this is not a regular film.
The action is super mind-numbing. The gore is super-violent in a very over-the-top way. The dialogue is oddly paced and sparse and way more dramatic than is necessary. Blood flows freely as zombie limbs fly through the air time and again. But it all works. This is not a movie to critique for film class or to be studied for its deeper subtleties and symbolism. It is, in fact, unapologetically campy and violent. If you're into "gore fests" or "action bonanzas" all done with that Asian cool, then you absolutely must see this film.

Exactly! "Versus" is a thrill that exists outside the world of good and bad cinema. It is just a huge hell of a lot of fun.
The movie is a low budget horror/action picture that does not make any sense. Versus is all about style & no substance, which sometimes it is all right, but in here it's absolutely dreadful.
Good review, the movie is a blast & the director's references are slick. The movie is not for a lot of people, I agree w/ tht. The director is planning for an American remake, hopefully it can have the spunk tht this 1 did.
Excellent and noteworthy Tarantino offering that has possibly the most pop culture "shout outs" of any movie. This might be one of the greatest revenge movies around. Jam-packed with graphic violence, good performances from the cast and that trademark Tarantino style dialog, story and direction that can captivate even the shortest of attention spans.
Only two things stop me from giving this a perfect rating. #1: As you may know already, it just twists my panties up when Hollywood makes these martial arts flicks and seem to forget to cast martial artists for the lead roles. This can often depreciate the spectrum of suspension of disbelief, but thankfully we have Yuen Wo Ping and Zoe Bell to smooth out those rough edges. #2 This movie is volume 1, meaning that it is one half of a movie and other issues and factors of volume two affect this movie as a result. I have several problems with volume 2 but we will get into that another time. Here is a little taste: Why the fuck does she bother going through all the trouble to get this dope ass, high quality sword for a five second sword fight that ends with a hokey "secret kung fu technique"?!? Her final battle with Bill was insulting. She didn't even need a sword to take on Krusty the Bill and she could have just shot up the "House of Blue Leaves" or whatever so why get the sword? But, alas, I digress. I definitely think that volume one is much better than volume two but I'm a samurai man myself (like you couldn't tell) so I can see how those cowboys out there might disaree with me.
As a film on its own that stands on an unanswered cliff hanger I give it 4.5 stars, but if I were to grade it as a whole including volume 2 I would give it 3.5 stars for the simple fact that the second act (much like "Battle Royale 2") disregards all of the sensibilities of the first act. I know that was the point but it was still annoying.
FINAL SUMMATION: Very enjoyable and energetic genre meld (it's a crime noir/kung fu/samurai/revenge/dramedy). The bloody end battles will keep you giddy for hours after viewing. Entertaining and worth every cent. Quentin cranks out quality. Repeatedly. Get it if you don't got it; you will have fun. Thanks for the time. I'll be at you.

This isn't the greatest thing that's ever come down the pike, but it's a great visceral thrill - the fights generally filmed in a more respectful full-figure than most occidental martial arts movies.
Tarantinos worst movie ever I you ask me.Terrible dialog, terrible acting and the lamest storyline I have ever had the misfortune to lay my eyes on.Stealing from basicly every Japanese movie made,Tarantino hits rock bottom with this pile of crap.
I can't agree with this. The movie as a whole is excellent filmmaking. KB is one giant epic mixing different genres not just with martial arts but with everything that QT enjoys. I think you missed that point, QT is expressing wht he adores to the audiene
KB vol 1 is like a hyper-active child. It mixes all genres from an outrageous anime, sly references 2 de palma, 70's flicks & revenge fu. While KB vol 2 took it's ritalin 2 focus on bkstory. I personally luv the whole thing,it has my fave genres in all
This movie has everything that makes Tarantino great: the incredible dialogue, the brilliant action, the jarring, but hypnotic, violence and of course the pop-culture references. Much better than Vol. 2.
I hate everything the over indulgent harmage to Martial flicks (but lack of true knowledge) and the disrespect for the martial arts uma thurman doing wushuw with a samuri sword get the f out of here - the anime was the best thing in this entire movie..
Totally agree that part 2 dragged down the quality. And as for all the shout-outs, yeah, I always kind of thought of this film as "the first DJ'd movie", it's more a hip-hop-like collage of samples and winks than an original work--but it's badass.
Don't tell me that I don't finish what I start. Speaking of which, I don't know where to start. Quentin pulled the old pretentious artist schtick by doing exactly what he wants to do rather than consider the essence of the story and core audience of the first volume. See, the first one was basically a samurai flick, this one is a spagetti western. This does not make for a natural or fluid transition. QT has managed, through this somewhat selfish and Hollywood-esque method, to capture the attention of many types of crowds and creating a movie whose two parts may have completely different fan followings. Kind of gimmicky corporate mess in my opinion but whatever. There is just insufficient action in this one. Everone talks about the big cat fight with Uma and Daryl and how it was this great fight. Too bad it's not. What fight were you folks watching?!? That fight is garbage. Just plain ridiculous. This expert female killer can't figure out a way to draw or use her sword in an enclosed space so it starts to play out like an SNL sketch. Quentin was gracious enough, however, to cast Gordon Liu as a stereotypical throwback of the generic, mean, but dilligent crusty turd of a master. All the fights suck! The best fight in this movie isn't even in this movie. It was removed. David Carradine vs. Michael Jai White. It is short but somehow very satisfying. The final showdown? Fucking disappointing. This was the ultra thick, cushy pillows of padded bras. We were kind of promised so much but we got so little. Ten fucking seconds and it ends with a corny "special secret technique"--the kind indigenous to all those goofy old schoolers that were great when you were young but now you have to watch them drunk to really get a kick out of it. The saving grace of this long winded station of smoke and mirrors is one actor's performance. An actor I hate. I still view David Carradine as a tool of a corrupt and racist system that got his entire career off the blood, sweat and hard work of an icon. In my personal opinion he is one of the men responsible for Bruce Lee's death. Bruce Lee developed the concept that the show Kung Fu was based upon. The idea was catered for Bruce to be the star. Unfortuately thanks to good old bigotry, Hollywood opted for a young Irish dancer to portray a Chinese kung fu master as opposed to an actual Chinese kung fu master portraying something that comes naturally with credibility. Back then David Carradine was probably like he is now. A shameless, greedy, unethical, corporate bitch of a prick that apparently liked the idea of pretending he was Chinese--as he went on to do so for over two decades. When Bruce didn't get this part he had to work much harder to achieve the promises he had made to himself years earlier. All that extra work and effort wound up take its toll on Bruce and he was dead by 32 and nobody knows why. It is entirely possible that if doors were opened to him earlier he would not have had to travel so much, campaign, work and train while dealing with the jet lag and malnutrition that comes with an extraordinarily busy lifestyle. Perhaps it could have turned out much better if in your struggles society itself is not against you. But perhaps I have tripped too hard and too far off topic. As I was saying, this movie features David Carradine's best performance around. It is honestly (and I hate to say this) quite captivating and perhaps even pitch perfect (the Superman speech was fantastic). However a fine performance and some well written dialog can't offset the fact that it unbalances the entire flow and meaning of the first volume. As volume 2 I give it 3 stars. On its own maybe 3.5 to 4 stars but it is not on its own. Thanks for reading and support your local dojos, gyms and Kwoon. Peace out.

Almost anything Tarantino could throw at us which didn't have the battle in the House of Blue Leaves (ie Part I) would be a visceral letdown, but I like this a lot more than you do.
Kill Bill as the whole is a good movie that mixes and matches different genres. I think you really missed the whole point of the Kill Bill movies. The fight in the trailer was not great but still entertaining.
I hate how the films are split up. To review Kill Bill u have to see the whole pic as 1 big epic film mixing spagetti & fu genres. U can't dislike the other 4 not going all kung fu. The 2nd played as noir & spagetti with lil fu, but more detail backstory
I think I hated this film much more than you did. But I can't honestly tell if it's because of its endless, mastubatory speechifying or because it's so clearly inferior to part one. Either way, a big let down.
Fearless [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
People by nature want to be pioneers. When they find something new first or early on they want to believe that they have discovered a hidden gem. This is where trends find their roots. Unfortunately reality trumps poorly formulated thoughts by means of time and reason. Because of this we now know that disco is dead, actors shouldn't be politicians and bell bottoms look stupid. In ten years we will be kicking ourselves for caring about who the next American Idol is or watching celebrities dance but back to the point at hand. "Fearless" is yet another ridiculously over-hyped mediocre movie that is probably best for people who haven't seen previous Jet Li movies, otherwise they might know how banal it is. Sorry, but nothing special. Sure it's entertaining but nowhere near his (Jet Li's) best anything. His all-time bests will always be "Fist Of Legend" and the original "Once Upon A Time In China". Sorry that's just how it is. The choreography was standard and nothing new. The fight choreography was not even as good as it was in "Lethal Weapon 4". His screen presence was not as strong as it was in "Unleashed" or "Hero". It will be a holy grail to fanboys but just pretty good to us veterans of Asian cinema. It's a shame he can't crank out the quality he used to, but oh well, Donnie Yen will save us all.

Jet Li filmed with respect and understanding trumps "Lethal Weapon IV"'s travesty of a quaint running gag.
I really cannot imagine what would make you give this 3 stars?! This is some of Jet's absolute best and perhaps the only one to come full circle. There is a much larger philospohical context greater than "kung fu...train to be healthy and don't fight" LW4
Did u watch the movie? The choreography was amazing, each fight set the stage for Jet Li's final outing in the fu world. The movie is great! Lethal Weapon 4 was cheesy & for a Jet Li movie it is horrible.
I have to totally disagree with you here. I think that "Fearless" is definitely among Jet's best work, and I'm by no means a Jet Li fanboy. I think that overall this film pulls together the best elements of both filmmaking and action to tremendous effect.
Kill! (product link) Action/Adventure / Swordplay/Sword(s) This film was absolutely entertaining from start to finish. It presents a gritty atmosphere of desperation with a quirky sense of insights on the circumstance that are both funny and thought-provoking at times. The sword fights are raw and realistic with an unpolished feel that seems to give them greater credibility. "Kill" invokes feelings of old westerns and classic "Twilight Zone" episodes that made you really feel the journey as if you were taking it yourself. This movie easily makes my all-time top 25 samurai films list.

I loved this on the screen when I saw it many years ago, and it is just about as good on dvd. I'm not sure I've disliked anything starring Tatsuya Nakadai, and this stands with many of his best.
The film is spectacular and it is very impressive piece of work, I have to say this is one of my top 5 samurai movies. The director is amazing, and the movie shows how awesome the man really is.
Spirited Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I saw all these crappy, trendy-ass, snobby reviews and I had to say something about it. A lot of folks have been crapping on this movie because of the deceptive packaging and not enough Tony or they bitch about the directing or acting. First off, only a flaky tool would even think that quality acting or directing is a reason movies like this are watched. Genre, kids. We watch this crap for the quality violence and the graceful destructiveness as well as the artistic expression and all that good shit. What these snots are failing to mention is that this is a very fun and energetic martial arts flick that captures the feeling and pace of those old school kung fu flicks that were made on shoe string budgets yet still featured break-neck precision choreography that made you want to go out and jump kick something. This movie rocks--it's the reviewers that suck.

"Genre" is no excuse for suckiness. There are many great films in each genre (or should be, anyway. I am not aware of any great transsexual dwarf musicals, but it could be done). I saw this, found some quality, but was not highly impressed.
Did you actually watch this campy thai low budget fu movie? The movie is horrible, the style of film making was repeative & annoying, each fight scene was a disappointment. This is a huge disgrace for any viewer to review this film 4 stars.
You know something? I haven't seen the movie yet. But given what I just read in your review, I think you might have a point. Some people watch certain films, often for tedious and stupid reasons. I think I'll give this one a chance someday soon :-)
POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIAL BUT COMPLETELY HONEST REVIEW WARNING: You might not like it but somebody's got to say it. Holy overhyped bowl of piss on the classics, Batman! Many folks are calling this one of the greatest martial arts movies of all time but I can give you one reason that it will never make the all time top twenty. All the greats star REAL martial artists! Only one of the three main stars is a real martial artist--oh yeah and the villian, but Cheng Pei Pei is getting old, campers. She ain't what she used to be. I guess the biggest problem with the movie is that it was a Chinese kung fu/fantasy that was tailor made for the viewing sensibilities of western audiences. Mistake #1. In doing that and trying to expand to a wider crowd it winds up detracting from the offering for true Asian cinema fans by recycling so many themes that it just becomes insulting. Now, I never read the comic but I hope to god that it is better than the writing in the movie. The story of the film is basically a hodge podge collection of every single kung fu movie plot device and stereotype ever used such as: secret style, legendary hero, legendary weapon, young martial arts prodigy, forbidden romance, warrior student(who has become a master) seeks revenge of master's death by super villan, wise master must enlighten young upstart, etc. What brings the horrible generic plot together is the wonderful performances of the cast which are all quite noteworthy. I also think that something should be said of Zhang Ziyi. What is wrong with you folks making this bitch famous just because she's, what, cute? She does not look all that great or convincing doing martial arts. Apparently, now, everyone with some kind of dance background is all of a sudden a martial arts/action star. $#@*&^*!!!!! Michelle Yoeh and some phenomenal choreography from Yuen Wo Ping that is nothing short of brilliant kind of save this movie from becoming a complete Chinese/Hollywood bastardization of the classics. It is honestly a beautiful and entertaining movie and if you haven't had too much exposure to Asian cinema then I would say it's a four to four and a half star movie. However, if you have already seen most of the movies that this flick bites off then you will get where I'm coming from.

While I rate this higher than you do, each of your concerns is valid. Rather than a revolutionary departure, the film is a very competent retread of what had come before, with strong cinematography and art direction. Zhang Ziyi's character is a problem.
The story was completely incoherent. What the hell do people mean that when these people fly, their bodies are doing what their hearts aren't? THIS IS ART FILM RETARDATION AT IT'S PEAK!
Yuen Wo ping choreograph this picture- with his abilities & talent he makes any actor look amazing. Did you see the Matrix? wires can be great, & with this picture it did. Just because it is hyped up to Westerners you don't like it tht does not make sense
I think you may have rated this one a little too highly. But I am glad someone is willing to puncture the hype balloon that is Crouching Tiger. This movie seems to have been made to appeal to people who read the New Yorker. Too much wirework also.
I agree with everything that has been stated - This will never be a classic in the same way non real fu fans will consider the Matrix and Kill Bill having legendary fu status - I would Have to say Hero was a far Superior movie on every level
It's true, Zhang ZIyi, she's really not that great. I remember when this film came out in theaters I wasn't that impressed, I've been watching kung fu flix my whole life. But this movie open a lot of doors to people who never saw a martial arts pic.
The worst, most ignorant and pointless pile of shit I have ever seen in my whole damn life. I can't tell you how many people had built this flick up to me a long time ago. But, around a decade ago, I finally got the chance to watch it. It made me want to punch babies. Okay, maybe not, but I hate this flick more than I hate Oprah and I fucking hate Oprah. In my best estimation "A Clockwork Orange" seems to be some sort of compilation of frat boy wet dreams. Here, let me paraphrase the plot for you. This "gang" of scrawny, bitch-made, soft looking tools wander around town high off crack milk raping women and starting fights with other chumps. Somehow this bunch of deranged jackasses manage to win these fights. They call this cycle of mindless destruction and menacing "ultraviolence", even though it's just regular violence, but I think the term may help their balls feel heavier. Finally, the main degenerate rapist finds himself in a situation where he is forced to view the type of violence he inflicted daily and, get this, the shit bothered him! This is honestly the most mindless and pointless film that I have ever seen. Everytime I find out that somebody I know likes this flick my overall respect for their intelligence drops about 16 points unless they have a decent explaination for themselves. They never do. This flick is just as ugly and stupid as the fools who revere it. Like Jerry Springer. NOT FOR: Smart individuals that come from some sort of civilization. FOR: The average IQ is 100 so a bunch of space monkeys will love this for generations to come. FINAL SUMMATION: Balls soup.

You forgot beating the shit out of homeless people. Either way, this film is a pile of crap!
The film may not make quite as strong an intellectual argument as the novel, but this is far from ignorant and pointless. When a viewer fails to understand what a work of art is saying that is very different from it saying nothing.
This review is bad- but the movie has a lot of talent. I don't know what you & Miho have with this film. It's not suppose to be smart, but it was the first film for THX . The book is great too-you guys don't know any thing bout good movies.
This movie just didn't do it for me. I get what they were going for, and i would guess the book is better, but this film just doesn't make my "You gotta see this!" list.
I think you missed the whole point about this film. This is a classic film with a provoking premise, which is suppose to make you disgusted but translate this work to the real world & you'll see how much in common it has.
Maybe I am someone who is easily taken by hype or am overly-impressed by a director's pedigree. Whatever the case may be, I believe this movie is totally brilliant, and is one of the best of the decade, and is definitely this director's best.
Whoaa... trashing the Stan meister...!! Actually I didn't really dig this movie either! And while I have enjoyed some of Kubrick's films in the past. Im not, blindly, gonna laud his every movie with praise, because filmsnobs around the world, tells me to!
SOMEWHAT CONTRAVERSIAL REVIEW WARNING: This review deviates from the standard trendy misconception that the only good "Matrix" movie was the first one. A lot of critics have bashed this film with unjust reasoning so I'm just gonna squash that B.S. right here and now.
"The Matrix: Reloaded" delivered the goods in full. More dimension was added to the story when we find out that none of the characters or the story actually take place outside of the Matrix. Though this fact does devalue the reality and gravity of the entire series, this was the second film of the trilogy so that makes room for a more conclusive denouement in the third and final film...
You know I have actually heard some people say that there was not enough action in it. Wow, do those fools have some short attention spans or what?!? The movie is about 2 hours and 18 minutes. Roughly 18 minutes accounts for the credits and trailer at the end of the film, meaning the movie itself is about 2 hours. Approximately 1 hour of the movie is kung fu fights, shoot-outs and car chases. So about half of the movie is all-out action, while the other half focused on the plot and the many characters involved. As an added bonus, this one included something the first film didn't have. Actual martial artists!!! Collin Chou as Seraph (my favorite Matrix character), Daniel Bernhardt as an agent and all of the Merovengien's monkey boys were the real deal. There was some excellent choreography from Yuen Wo Ping that totally trumped the previous film and showcased a good variety from unarmed to weapon-based combat (Keanu handled those sai pretty damn well). The CGI stuff didn't bother me one bit because Keanu is not like us. He has not dedicated his life to advancing his martial capabilities, agilty and strength, so even with intense short training he can't pull off the junk that we have been working on for years. That being the case it was actually cool to see some really amazing kung fu in the form of well done CGI animation, and I also think that it was done in a fluid enough manner that it didn't disrupt the flow of those sequences. Besides you folks had no problems when Spiderman did it, so you should be fine with that stuff going down in the Matrix. This movie was great entertainment and contained all of the hallmarks of an engrossing and thought-provoking sci-fi classic. The actors were on point and the curvature of the path of the story was nicely done.
There is only one problem here. One major problem. This movie was almost perfect, but I had to deduct a half star for the fact that this film suffers from middle kid syndrome due to its status as the second film in the trilogy. The kid that came after this one fucked it up for everybody and ruined what could have been one of the greatest sci-fi tales ever told.
IN SUMMATION: Yeah, this film has caught a lot of flak because many "critics" feel it solidifies their own credibility if they bash a trilogy film that does well in the box office. Just like when everyone bashed the new "Star Wars" films. But guess what: they weren't that damn bad either. People are just jaded and prejudiced. Please, folks, don't take a perspective because you are lead to believe that you should, because then you are in someone else's control. If fools can tell you what to believe, what does that make you? But screw the soapbox, this movie is great and only marred by the sorry ass pile of crap that followed it. Worth adding to the collection.

Who the hell said this film lacked action? *Uhs* They are indeed mentally deficent!
There are some moments I really loved, like the chase scene & fights but the movie didn't really work. The film felt rushed like the third & the story plus characters suffered. "The Matrix" was amazing picture, Idk what happened here.
The Matrix: Reloaded is a loud, & fun popcorn film. The story was everywhere, but the action was again inventive. The freeway chase was great. I liked the movie for wht it was. The Phantom Menance was a bad pic, the millions of Jar Jar Binks ruined it
Shadow: Dead Riot (product link) Action/Adventure / Horror Complete crap. Avoid altogether if possible. Chock-full of the poorest quality everything. Bad acting, mild and less than generic fight scenes and the most gratuitous nudity of some of the ugliest girls that you would probably avoid at even last call. I gave it a half a star for it's concept-zombies, martial arts, nude women in prison-you know, sounds like a plan. Unfortunately the ridiculous execution of said idea made for one of the lamest things anyone would attempt to resell. Don't waste your time or money.
Once again it is time for me to play fire starter and conflict with the popular established opinions of this movie for the sake of balance and fairness. That was a bit over the top. Moving on...
To begin with, I dug it. A lot of folks are mad that Jet Li didn't really showcase enough of his martial arts ability and that he somehow gave a bad overall performance. Well that's kind of bullshit. First off, if you folks are the big Jet Li fanatics you pretend to be, then you already read his numerous interviews where he flat out stated that "Fearless" was going to be his last epic martial arts movie. There it is. He told you himself there would be no more wall-to-wall kung fu movies coming from him, and here you people are waiting for him to be proven a liar.
So "War" is an action movie that feels like an anime and not a kung fu flick. So what? Nobody seems to mention that the dialog, basic story, and plot twists are well written. Nobody seems to mention that there are some pretty decent performances from the cast and that the action has a raw tactical quality that feels more real than a bunch of action and fu flicks circulating currently. Nobody mentions this because they all wanted to see what they expected to see, and it's not fair to factor in your preconceived notions into your reviews, kids. I know you're annoyed that you didn't see enough Jet fu. Well guess what? I'm fucking annoyed that I didn't get to see enough Jet fu; but I can't deny when I see an enjoyable movie, and it is what it is.
Jet Li's performance as an ice cold killer who is always ready to put a few rounds in somebody is quite captivating as he smirks and utilizes subtle mannerisms that convey maximum menace. Definitely a movie for people who love bad guys.
If I was totally unbiased I would have given it 4 stars, but even I was petty enough to hope for a few more flashy kicks. Shame on all of us. If you can leave your expectations at the door and watch this movie objectively I think you will see it is a pretty cool action flick that is worth a look or two. If you want to see a real crappy Jet Li movie, check out "Bodyguard From Beijing" or "Romeo Must Die"--his two worst.

I have never wished for suicide, but this movie has made me see things in a whole new light.
This film was horrible. If you like Jet Li so much this is not a good film the story was messy & the goofy plot twists was a disaster. The movie is a mess that is why it came out in late August.
this movie total sucked, who ever like this movie must got no brain, how can you say it's good? the writer of this film must be drunk when he wrote the script, the action director corey yuen must be half asleep when he direct the movie, jet li worst film!
Oooooo, snap! They took our cash, pissed in our popcorn and then left out an ending that made any sense. The essential, colossal letdown and crap-bomb of our generation. This film managed to ruin everything that came before it by concluding almost nothing except perhaps the love story which none of us gave a fuck about in the first place.
So let me get this straight. We the viewers never get to see the actual reality of this mythology, we only get to view various layers of "The Matrix". The story in its entirety takes place in a computer program that runs through "Neo's" mind. This destroys all of the grandeur of the movie and its overall significance by the simple fact that none of anything we see really happens and we don't know if any of the characters we see actually exist or if they are part of the program. Basically the film's meaning and credibility are now shot, so let's look at the "story" that played out in some dude's head. In the future a war breaks out between the last city of humans (who live near the center of the earth) and the machines that took over earth. How is this epic war for humanity concluded? Do the humans take the fight to the machines' territory and sabotage some vital junk to turn the tide (a la "Star Wars")? No. Is some brilliant plan established to gain the upper hand and thereby prove the resourcefulness and imagination of the human mind? Again, no. Perhaps the last city of Zion unites and against extraordinary odds defeats the overwelming adversary presenting the triumph of the human will and spirit? Afraid not. Or could it be that Neo steps his bitch ass up to the front lines in all his super powered glory and lays the smackdown on the machine invaders? Not even fucking close. Basically this war and movie are "concluded" with a peace treaty with cold, calculating, unfeeling, immoral machines. Doesn't that make perfect sense? Unfortunately they left out the complete ending of the movie that takes place five minutes later when the machines decide to just lie and attack the city of Zion when their defenses are completely down, thereby killing every last human.
What a great trilogy. Not only did they get us from behind storywise, they also left out that nice concentration of fu throwdowns that the previous two incorporated. Sure there were fights. Like three. The previous one had nine or so. The big end fight of Neo vs. Agent Smith always leaves me kind of on the fence. I wanted a little more fu but I did really enjoy all of the special effects and mid-flight Superman-style battling. Always good to see stuff getting broken. The man vs. machines battle was really good too, and it is because of these two big action sequences, the special effects and Collin Chou as Seraph that I don't just brand this punk ass flick with 0 star rating. The end result is a compost heap of overhyped Hollywood bullshit. As a movie, but especially as the end of a trilogy, it is the most incomprehensive crap that I have ever seen or heard of. It could have been the defining science fiction trilogy of this younger generation. But no, the ending killed it all and morphed the overall essence of the project into the ugly truth: we just watched a bunch of Keanu Reeves' flicks. Damn.

did we somehow forget the moral of the story: "machines need us and the we need the machines" the whole purpose of the film other than Neo's path which is practically akin!
Even though the FX and action were superb, the ending spoiled the whole series. The Wachowski bros. could have just made 2 great movies, oh I'm sorry they did!
The film is flawed in that it's not fully comprehensible without listening to the philosophers' commentary track, but I still like it and find it a satisfactory conclusion.
This is not the best way to close a franchise, but the movie is still intriguing. The FX work is still great and mix that with awesome action, you get a good but not great film.
The first film was visually intriguing w/ nice action that was inventive. The third was a huge disappointment, It just failed on originality. The whole mech-warrior war was lame. I felt the Wachowski bros. were rushed to finish the trilogy.
The City Of Violence (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime This movie was just too violent. I know the director tried to give his interpretation of what it looks like from the inside of violence, but I wanted to see action with style like every other good martial arts film. In my opinion, this movie was meant to satify the thirst of European moviegoers and not so much that of the American ones. So if you are American and you like European style filmmaking, well then this is the movie for you.

Ryu Seung-wan does an excellent job of differentiating South Korean action from Hong Kong martial arts. While I enjoy the choreography of the sort of HK films you prefer, the realistic action here impresses me very highly. It 's not what you want but...
this film wasnt all the european style and more crime and old school hong kong styled, which explains why the action is more raw and brutal and i believe that this film is actually not that violent
I did not understand your review, but I thought this was worth more than 3 stars. The story was good & the action scenes were nicely done for the low budget it had.
I didn't think this movie was suppose to satisfy European moviegoers or fans of Euro films. The director Seung-wan Ryoo is highly influenced by American films. The film shows a lot of American film references. I didn't find this film too violent ither
Damn, that's a shame. This flick was like getting your pocket picked by an ex-girlfriend. You thought you should have known better but everything seemed to be okay externally. Upon closer inspection it seems you've lost some cash and a bunch of faith in someone that you used to be able to depend on. Why did they have to play us like that?
This was originally supposed to be a live action adaption of the video game "Tekken". What sense does it make to attempt to recreate the most realistic and technically accurate fighting video game (yeah, yeah, I know "Soul Calibur" is up there too) by abusing lines, CGI and trick photography?!? Why would you gather a cast with such promise to short-change us with minimal actual martial arts? These methods are all utilities of corporate bastardization. This is why the book is always better. Or the comic. In this case the video game. When will movie executives learn not to attempt to fix things that function at top levels without their interference? No one really adapts anything. They twist, distort, then recreate. This was also the case with the movie "I Am Legend", which is based on my favorite book of the same title. Nothing was the same except the title. It winds up feeling like these pretentious, arrogant assholes have enough cash powering them that they can somehow live with themselves after they go and piss on a true artist's masterwork. The movie industry can be quite shameless and "The Avenging Fist" is a good example of such. All flash, no substance. I was being nice with my rating, but to be fair the special effects (here and there, not all) are quite good and pretty unique, and some of the cinematography together with a few okay cast efforts pull it away from being absolutely worthless. Don't get it twisted, though, this movie is definitely ass. It was loosely based on "Tekken" and had Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao and Ekin Cheng--this shit should have been legendary but instead we got something that isn't even worth the first viewing. Don't bother, you'll kind of regret it. Oh, yeah, thinking of that movie reminds me, do me a favor: if you see someone with a mullet, punch them. Just for sucking. It's like doing a public service. If you have a mullet, cut that shit, you're embarrassing the rest of us who walk upright. I'll catch ya'.

I FF'd through a lot of it but then thought that wasn't fair and I really tried to watch all of Tekken or, hell whatever, but it only got worse! Only for parties with mind altering substances. Caffeine to start to keep you awake.
Your def. right this film is all style & no substance. It's a shame that this film has talented directors & stars but it just fails. "I am Legend" the movie version really ruined the book. Maybe in the future will get the story that was meant to be told.
Once again I read some funky reviews and yet I see the movie anyway and strike gold. This movie verges on phenomenal based solely on its visual poetry if nothing else. The characters (both good and evil) do a good job of exuding a classic yet distinctly unique presence.
Though this may not have been Donnie's best martial arts performance--as it was missing all of those pimp-daddy trademark kicks--it was still impressive and it has however the best Donnie Yen fight choreography I've seen--ever (and I've seen most of it). The fights were flat out sick and contained the best nunchuku choreography ever put onto film. That's right I said it.
"Dragon Tiger Gate" did contain CGI and some wire stuff, but it was what I like to call tasteful wire fu, as it was performed in a fluid manner to aid the fantastic realism of the film. This is unlike standard jerky, hokey and unrealistic line flying that defies physics like in movies like "Romeo Must Die". The type of special effects used in this film wound up adding to the comic book feel of the movie and enhancing the experience. Iconic, slick and beautiful.
If you want to see a movie that presents a quality mythological intensity with breath-taking eye candy, this is where you should go.

Your comments about the wire work are spot on; I normally prefer little or no wirework, but I can understand it when it's used for a comic book type storyline.
The movie is to campy compared to the brilliant comic book series. The movie is suppose to be an orgin story but it fails becuz they made the stars too silly, I hope a darker version of Dragon Tiger Gate will come out.
Love this movie. Nic tse's screen fighting skills have come a long way since Gen X cops. and gets better with everything he does. proving that canto pop idols CAN fight. You just have to teach them.
I have never read Yu Koyama's comic "Azumi", but after watching this flick I want to get my hands on one right away. I have seen "Azumi" amongst my friends many times. I remember going to the theaters in the summer of 2003 watching this intense and gory swordplay film. I am not a big fan of director Ryuhei Kitamura, but I do enjoy his campy attitude and his insane style of filmmaking.
The first time I saw this film I was a bit skeptical because I thought it was another feminist on a grudge to kick ass. I was surprised how detailed the plot was and how each character was driven to kill. It was a mind-blowing experience for me. This film takes no time to set up, with hacking and slashing at the get-go, and there is no stopping this killing machine until the final reel. Though with all this violence in this open hell world, there is some essence of beauty--for example how the wind was blown right before a kill or how there were gardens of flowers in many shots.
"Azumi" was successful to the mainstream audience for two reasons: for its over-the-top violence and its simple shots of beauty which gave the audience hope that these characters could make it out alive. "Azumi" is a wild and gory experince, but once in awhile if you look away from the violent acts you can see something nice.
This is a 4-star recommended movie for everyone and yet I have not yet achieved my goal of getting the comic. But just thinking about this film, I can't wait to get my hands on one.

The score could have been higher? You gotta be kidding me. I am amazed that people think this mildly entertaining fluff ranks up with the greatest classics of all time. Two stars for this, tops.
It's nice to see real reviews up in the newest review section. I was getting sick of seeing all those one sentence "reviews" from all those morons who are desperate for flix bucks. Keep up the good fight, player. Real writers rule!!!
The Rebel (product link) Martial Arts / Drama I have seen this film 10 times amongst my family and friends. With its poor-looking DVD cover, everyone was a bit amused and unmoved about the film. But as soon as the flick started everyone was thrilled.
"The Rebel" is a high-kicking, in-your-face martial arts movie with some emotional love stuff for your girlfriend or wife. I was a bit suprised because the DVD cover looked like another lame 80's flick. But this movie is an eye-opener with great fights and action. The story sets up fast, we're introduced to the characters right away, and the direction is great.
This is a must-own film for anyone that loves martial arts or action. Get this flick now.

this movie was completely off the chain. Loved it!
Man, WTF?!? One of the biggest letdowns in cinema history. I mean, seriously, you have got to be fucking joking. This movie takes a slow and stank-ass dump on both fans of "Zatoichi" and the fans of "Yojimbo" by being the weakest entry of either series. As I am a big fan of both "Zatoichi" and "Yojimbo", this movie is that much more insulting and painful for me. If evaluated as a "Zatoichi" movie, it is basic run of the mill stuff. Everything and everyone projected a feeling of just going through the motions. It was somewhat lackluster, generic and overall cliched, but that could be excusable if the end showdown delivered...
Now let us evaluate the film as a "Yojimbo" movie. "Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo" is the final chapter in the path of Yojimbo. In his first appearance in the original "Yojimbo" he scams, outmaneuvers and out duels a whole damn town, so when you end a legendary tale like that with this garbage you are going to offend somebody. He is flat out played out in this flick. It is always offensive when they make an established knight a pawn.
If everything felt off, where could this lead? THE FINAL SHOWDOWN: $#!*motherf*&%$#@@#$@@$$!!!! So short, so weak, so not worth the damn wait. It is also necessary to mention that these two individuals that have previously been depicted as masters of their own destiny are transformed into mere victims of circumstance. This was also the case in "Zatoichi Meets The One-Armed Swordsman", but that was at least a better movie than this crap. This movie does have a few redeeming traits, such as decent performances, some alright fights and basic production values; but none of that fixes talent being completely wasted and stiffing the fans of what should have obvoiusly been an all time classic. If you are a "Zatoichi" or a "Yojimbo" completist then you might feel the need to own this movie just to complete the collection, but as I've stated I am a fan of both series and I sold my copy of this awhile ago because it just pissed me off too much. View at your own risk, but I would just move on to the other "Yojimbo" and many other "Zatoichi" films that are really worth your time.
Before I bail I'd like to remind you that if you shake it more than twice you're playing with it. Scream and yell obscenities when necessary. Later.

While this was definitely a subpar Zatoichi film, it was a degrading Yojimbo film: Katsu was having an off day, but Mifune was dumping on his own past success.
the movie is still a classic & amazing, it has a great cast, good direction, and wit to lighten up any film fan. The movie is intended for smart people. This film is only for people w/ true class of art. The film is easy to understand.
SPL: Sha Po Lang (product link) Crime / Drama I just finished watching this movie for the ninth or tenth time a couple of nights ago and it still maintains the same effect as it did when I first got it over a year ago. It just kicks ass on many, many levels: as a hardboiled cops vs. gangster action flick; as a film about tragedy, twisting fates and the many demensions of family and loyalty; or flat out as a hardcore comeback for contemporary Hong Kong martial arts action movies. There are good fights throughout but two of these fights will put you on your ass: Donnie vs. Wu Jing and of course Donnie vs. the great Sammo Hung. It oozes class with a story told with the integrity of classic literature presented through good cinematography and editing with impressive performances from the entire cast. This movie is a must-own for any true fan of Hong Kong kung fu/action flicks or Asian film fans in general.
You are exactly right. This is a magnificent film. (This should certainly be in technical notes, but here goes: The Chinese mainland print edits out the end of the final fight - quite an omission.)
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (product link) Comedy / Horror HOLY SH-T !!! This movie was sooo bad it actually hurt. "Friends" told me to check this movie out and now that is time I will never get back. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. I don't get cult acclaim for movies that fail to entertain on every level. It wasn't so bad that it became funny-just lame. After having watched this movie I somehow became embarrassed and ashamed for ever having it in my poor DVD player that has done nothing to deserve that type of treatment. This movie shall continue on a path of destruction seeking out and eradicating brain cells wherever it comes into contact. Protect your children and pets. Humanity has failed.
The movie is crap- but it's also a good way to break the ice with any stranger. JCVH is a movie that is out there, it's weird, & I am ashamed that I still have a copy of this film.
The man cannot be stopped. Donnie Yen once again chooses too dazzle us and proves that classic Hong Kong action still thrives and amazes. I mean, really, hit after hit: "Seven Swords", then "SPL", then "Dragon Tiger Gate", and now "Flash Point". This player ages like wine. Donnie provides some fresh choreography utilizing a wide range of styles and techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jujitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Chinese boxing, and God knows what else. The movie is just about as good as "SPL", with one exception. In "Flash Point" you only get one grand wall-to-wall throw down of an epic nature whereas in "SPL" you get two. This movie had a good feel and was littered with raw intense moments as well as pretty decent performances from the cast. The end fight was absolutely tight and one of the best within several years, causing it to break into the top 25 all time best end fights (also like "SPL"). This flick is definitely worth your time. I mean, seriously, "That is a tasty burger". If you are interested in end fights done right see the following: "SPL" (duh), "In The Line of Duty 4", "Shanghai Express", "Gorgeous", "Drive", "Fist of Legend", "Dragons Forever", "Who Am I?", "City of Violence", "Lethal Weapon 4", "Freddy vs. Jason", "Final Fantasy: Advent Children", and many others that I can't think of at the moment. Thanks for the time. Later.

I can't agree with rating it as high as SPL, which is a far more accomplished film - but this really is a well constructed thriller which delivers what it promises. ****, but no more.
I liked the film, but compared to Wilson Yip's "SPL" this movie falls flat on originality, the action does not really show until the end. I thought Mr. Yip could of made a remarkable picture, but it just lacks original style.
Donnie Yen is one of the best in the business today. Unlike Jackie and Jet, he's not slowing down yet. It's nice to see him adding the repertoire even after such a long career.
donnie yen is a try hard, he could never match jet li or tony jaa, he is really traying too hard , i think he would not last in a real fight, if all the action star fight for real, i rate bruce lee no.1, jet li no.2, sammo hung no.3, tony jaa no.4, donie
Battle Royale 2 (product link) Horror / Thriller Let me start off by saying this movie was not at all what I thought it would be. "Battle Royale 2" is an extension of the mythology developed in the first "Battle Royale" movie, yet it fails to capture the first film's intensity, passion and sheer rawness. There seems to be a definite quantity over quality theme here. The action in this one has a stronger favoring towards firearms and conventional warfare, thus eliminating that "anything goes" feeling of the first.
Despite all of the proceeding, it actually is an alright action film that does provide a glimpse of what happens next in this reality, even though it disregards all of the sensibilties developed in the first film--kinda like Kill Bill vol. 2 ,hmmm...

What you say is true, but I didn't appreciate it beyond **1/2.
This movie is absolutely awful. Any rating above zero stars is being way too generous. Aside from Casshern, this is the worst Japanese film of all time.
Now this is the kind of movie I have been waiting for. After reading a very foul review of this movie I was somewhat discouraged to get it. However, I had been wanting to see the movie for a while so I went for it. Thankfully the poor review was due to ignorance of the material he was reviewing. Don't get me wrong, this movie is not for everybody. This is NOT a fanboy martial arts flick. There are no wires, no CGI, no pop stars or poorly-trained actors. You will not see flashy camera tricks that convince you that a crappy move is pretty. Sorry. "Geochilmaru: The Showdown" is actually for the well intiated. That's right: finally a true martial arts film for true martial artists.
The film takes the viewer through an introspective exploration of not only martial arts but sociology while also tackling the somewhat taboo subject of reality vs. perception in a fairly classy manor. The fights are very well choreographed and you get to see very good displays of the martial arts that are showcased. My only complaint is that you don't get to see a good exponent of Korean martial arts and it's a Korean movie. Everyone said there was Tae Kwon Do fighter in it- there isn't. I guess you do get to see the gangster do a few good Hapkido techniques when he's not street-brawlin' but that's still kind of weird that they wouldn't include a bunch more of their own goodies. I rated it 4 stars [out of 5] just to generalize. For fanboys it's 2.5- 3 stars. For open minded veiwers who like movies it's 3.5- 4 stars. For true appreciators of martial arts 4.5 stars. If you are a collector, get it.

You are right. Viewed purely for its writing and acting, this is nothing special; Viewed for the fighters' ability, it is at least ****. I enjoyed it much.
BASTARD RONIN'S COMEBACK- TELL YOUR FRIENDS, SLAP YOUR ENEMIES: Well, it looks like I couldn't stay away. It also looks like many of my predictions about this site regarding fanboys and fangirls came to fruition. I'm sorry but I'm not having it. This site rocks and I will fight for it with tooth, claw, fist, foot and superior reviews from a wider, more experienced and rational perspective. Thankfully, able hands like my boys Jay Lee, Choco, JV47842, Sgt.T and the 8th Sword have been keeping this place in check and up to code but there still seems to be some sort of uprising taking place. I came back to take up arms with my boys and defend the castle from the pretenders and trendsters, the fools and tools and, of course, the tragically retarded. Together we will put an end to the "Like Mees" as well as the dim-witted fangirl revolution. You fools better cover your nuts. Like a roid-ragin' cop who was picked on in high school, I'm ready to whoop some ass. Here comes the first punch...
I decided that I would come back large by reviewing the undisputed champ and all time greatest action movie. Yeah, that's right, I said it. All time, bitches. There are only really two types of people that can reasonably disagree with the previous statement: 1. those that have not seen it and 2. those that do not know what the word action means. I honestly have not met anyone that has seen this film and cannot admit that it is the best action flick around. Ever. This flick packs way more bang for your buck than anything that you have previously encountered in the States. Gratuitous, balletic, wild firefights are interwoven through a well designed story that is pumped full of not only ammunition but stellar performances from an excellent cast. Tony Leung is enigmatic. Chow Yun Fat is a brooding, unhinged wrecking ball. Anthony Wong is fucking Tony Montana. Phillip Kwok is that killa. This is the apex of cop/crime/noir/action entertainment. Saying that the action sequences are phenomenal would actually be making a vast understatement. The action is so plentiful and just unstoppable. Expect a variety of violence goodies involving not just wild gunplay but also quality stunts, explosions when needed and of course one straight up dope throwdown that brings as much hardcore noise as any trigger pull. "Hard Boiled" is the action gift that keeps on giving. Make sure you own this because you are a man and the absence of this in your library could bring that fact into question. This is Bastard Ronin delivering the goods the way you won't shut up about. Light some fires, kids. I'm 'bout to raise hell...

"Hard Boiled" is the root cause of overexcited reviews like this: It must be forgiven, because it is really THAT good.
Haven't been around long enough to agree on the fanboys and girls comments. But you've certainly got the movie nailed. Yes, as action movies go, there is none greater. The true crown jewel of the cinema action experience.
Awesome your back man! I am tired of the one sentence reviews people post. Finally a real reviewer. "Hard-Boiled" is an insane action film. The film is an action fans wet dream. This is classic John Woo gunplay & its amazing. Awesome tht ur back dude.
The first thing you'll notice is that "Casshern" is a lot of fun to look at--as long as CGI doesn't bother you. The environments are well-designed and the CGI look is much better than I would have expected on a budget much smaller than what U.S. films get to play with. As well as CGI environments, there are portions of the film that are animated as well as stop-motion, or claymation, animation. But let me offer a warning: those that have seen the trailer or are expecting a full-on action movie will be sorely disappointed.
The 'mano a mano' fight sequences are few and far between, and when they do pop up they aren't mind-blowing, wire-fu fests a la "The Matrix". They are actually slowly paced and play out more like something you'd see at a stage play. Most of the action is of the CGI variety, and the final battle is truly epic. But much of the film revolves around the morality tale on the nature of existence and other such philosophical tenets. The main characters struggle to find their place in the world and strive to make their relationships with those around them work.
The story takes place after a great war in a Japan that resembles a kind of neo-fascist, "Final Fantasy"-esque, overly industrialized society. Science is God, but politics stand in the way of progress. As is the tendency with Asian films, plot details aren't spoon-fed to the audience. Character relationships and motivations often-times have to be ascertained by observing, even if it does tend to get a little frustrating at times.
While the story can get a bit stretched at times, it is enjoyable--and ultimately beautiful. The visuals are quite a treat. My biggest complaint is that it feels as if the director may have bitten off more than he could chew. Sometimes it feels like the movie got away from him or that he tried to go a little bigger than budgets or technical constraints would allow.
That aside, this is definitely sci-fi art, not sci-fi action. Those looking for some live-action anime that is more story- and character-driven should enjoy this flick. Same goes for those that like their sci-fi not wrapped in fast-food tie-ins or toy sales. But if it's the next "Matrix" you're looking for (even if some reviewer says it's better than both "Matrix" sequels combined), you'd be better off skipping this one.

But let me offer a warning: those that have seen the trailer or are expecting good acting, a plot that makes sense and action that is more exciting than wathcing paint dry will be sorely disappointed.
The movie has some of the best visuals I have seen, but that is the only thing it has. The story was too mashy. The story mixed to many plot-lines that it was a bit confusing & frusrating to follow.
The 2006 Korean gangster picture "A Dirty Carnival" reminds me of Hollywood gangster pictures that James Cagney would star in. Mr. Cagney starred in a lot of crime pictures for Warner Brothers in the 1930's. His character was always some mad gangster lunatic for vengeance. James Cagney's role in "White Heat" reminds me of the starring role of this film.
The story is fascinating, about Byung-du who is a 29-year-old career criminal working for the middle-rank enforcer Sang-chul. Burdened with a terminally ill mother and taking care of younger siblings, Byung-du is feeling financial pressure as a substitute patriarch. When the big boss President Hwang is cornered by a corrupt prosecutor, Byung-du volunteers for a whack job and wins the big man's trust. However, his real trouble begins when friend Min-ho, an aspiring movie director, asks him to be a consultant for the latter's debut film.
The performances from the actors and actresses were wonderfully done. The cast made it look easy, and that is a trick, especially in a movie full of twists and turns.
I absolutely love the score of the picture. It has a classical instrumental French vibe to it, and somehow it fits perfectly in this Korean crime movie. The action--or should I say killings--was realistic and it shows. The punches, kicks, and stabbings were done realistically. There was no Hollywood element to it. The director and writer, Ha Yu, made an excellent gangster movie. “A Dirty Carnival” has beautiful shots. Though it is violent and gritty, Mr. Ha Yu has a great eye of the world. In this film we see two sides: the civilian side of living, and the gangster side of living. It’s an achievement how he captures them both.
“A Dirty Carnival” is the most realistic and violent gangster picture I have ever seen. The performances and story are captivating to watch. The score is amazing. I love this picture.

The pressure was on. I bought this flick because of your review. Kudos. I loved it. Great call.
"Dirty Carnival" has an amazing musical score, it makes the film so alive. This being a gangster film it lets loose of what the audience expects from a gangster film. The film is a real joy & a gem for anybody, its sad tht not enough people have seen it
