Equilibrium (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction Hey, I like this movie. Yes, it's a low budget "Matrix" rip off, but check out the finale fight when the two characters are doing "Gun-Fu". The combination of gun play while using martial arts at the same time was very original. I haven't seen this done quite this way before, and makes the movie well worth watching for this scene alone...

I have to agree with both you and aardvarks on this movie. Sure, it's a matrix rip-off of sorts, but the film truly stands out, artistically and stylistically, as one of the coolest action films ever made, despite the bad timing of its theatrical release.
Tower Of Death (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Yuen Wo Ping's choreography created the best "Bruce Lee clone" fight scenes I've ever seen. There may be better movies out there, and clones who look more like Bruce Lee than this actor, but Bruce Lee's moves and fighting style have been captured here like none that I've ever seen before or since. You have to see it to believe.
Dragonball: The Magic Begins (product link) Fantasy / Action/Adventure Nice family oriented off the wall action without too much in the way of violence. Perfect for younger kids who like Martial Arts Flavor! Most Martial Arts movies that are geared towards a younger audiance I find to be too soft and too boring. They are usually lacking in quality action. This is one of the few movies thats "ok" for my kids to view that they actually like.
The Great Challenge (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts I didn't care much for this one. Director Julien Seri and action directors Kawee Sirikhaneerut and Xin Xin Xiong focused too much on roof climbing and wall scaling and not enough on real martial arts to entertain the audience. This wouldn't be so bad if the actors had the acrobatic skills of Jackie Chan, who has plenty of creativity and variety, but unfortunately they did not. The opening scene is decent, but the repetitive movements throughout the movie are monotonous.
Fearless [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure As another viewer commented, "the martial arts in this movies isn't anything new". Not saying thats it's poor action--in fact, if you're new to Martial Arts films or Jet Li, the action might blow your mind--but for a veteran of martial arts movie viewing of over 30 years I found Yuen Wo Ping's choreography "dated". It's the same kind of thing he was doing 15 years ago. I also found the sped-up camera action and editing a bit too obvious. Perhaps if this movie didn't receive the kind of perfect reviews it's been getting then maybe I wouldn't be so hard on it, but I expected more.

I stand by my 5 rating and I am neither a trend monger nor am I new to martial arts or martial art films. I do know when a film is good.
Good for you, man. People around here seem to be trend mongers with very little exposure to Asian cinema. I applaud your bold honesty and agree whole-heartedly. Thank you for keeping it real.
SPL: Sha Po Lang (product link) Crime / Drama The best movie I've seen in years! Donnie Yen has charisma that I haven't seen since the likes of Bruce Lee. The martial arts choreography is groundbreaking. Truly new and innovative. There's nothing out there better than this!
Versus (product link) Martial Arts / Horror This is a good movie. The balance of action and Martial Arts with Horror was great. However "Versus" did begin to lose a little bit of its "punch" near the end by moving from Martial Arts and Horror to more of a Magical/ Sword & Sorcery film. This loss of focus and the fact that one of the main villains that you loved to hate was killed off early in the film keeps this from getting an even higher rating.
Superfights (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a cheesy, low budget movie with a humdrum storyline. The only reason I even give it 2 stars is because of the amount of fighting. The Martial Arts is okay if you enjoy movies like "No Retreat, No Surrender".
Mad Monkey Kung Fu (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Another quality Shaw Bros. movie. Excellent choreography and storyline. I don't consider this to be "The movie that stands out from the rest" of the Shaw movies, it's simply as good as the others.
B13: Banlieue 13 (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts This isn't the masterpiece that many think it is. It's a decent movie with decent action and story, but not one of the best. Perhaps it's groundbreaking in France, but in Asia this type of action is just average.
The Boxer From Shantung (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Hard hitting and rough storytelling from the golden era of HK cinema. If you aren't into "pretty" Jet Li type martial arts choreography and like your action more violent and realistic, then this is the movie for you. I call this flick "The Asian Scarface". If you see it, you'll know why.
The Blade (product link) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Action/Adventure An amazing storyline and top notch action [when there was action]. I would've rated this movie higher if there was a little more martial arts action. One major fight scene isn't enough for a kung fu movie.
Fist Of The White Lotus (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of my favorite Gordon Liu movies. Beautiful and very original martial arts choreography!
Butterfly And Sword (product link) Martial Arts / Romance A good story and plenty of action. If you like "over the top" martial arts choreography than this movie is a must.
Fists And Guts (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Another great one from Gordon Liu. The scenes where two opponents are forced to fight "silently" is amazing and makes this worth purchasing alone.
Operation Scorpio (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A perfect blend of mind blowing martial arts choreography, drama and comedy. Totally underrated. This is the kind of movie that Jackie Chan wishes he could make.
Kung Fu Executioner / Sun Dragon [DOUBLE FEATURE] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Two quality Billy Chong movies for the price of one! There are no "throw aways" here.
Buddha's Palm And Dragon Fist (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure If you like old school action and PLENTY of it, then this flick is for you! Top notch "old school" moves from Li Yi Min. He always puts on a good show and this movie is no exception. Great choreography, plenty of action and a decent story too.
Samourais (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts A rather "silly" movie with plenty of great action. I'd rather have seen this without the grown-up language and had it geared more for kids. I would've rated it higher.

I wish the filmmakers had made the movie you described. The language and violence didn't match the level of this film's wit.
Tom Yum Goong (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Superb new school action from Tony Jaa. His fight scenes are truly innovative and groundbreaking--on par with "Kill Zone". However I simply cannot give it a higher rating because of all the melodrama regarding an elephant. In other words, I needed a more important subject matter to totally get into it.

Melodrama? Those were not just elephants, they were family! You need to consider the culture of the film you are watching. It doesn't matter if the viewer likes elephants the cast and characters do!
Snake In The Monkey's Shadow (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of my favorite old school flicks of all time...low production value but some of the best snake and monkey style fighting I've ever seen.
U.S. Seals 2: The Ultimate Force (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Over acting, low budget American example of Asian action cinema, BUT, they do a fair enough job with Martial Arts scenes to make it worth viewing.
Shadow: Dead Riot (product link) Action/Adventure / Horror I was very disappointed in this film. It wasn't scary in the least. All the special effects were cheesy and unrealistic looking, and the Martial Arts choreography was very poor. I only give it 1/2 star because of the cool keychain that came with [the special edition DVD I purchased].

What did the keychain look like? Can I buy it anywhere?...That is.....without having to buy a 2nd copy of the movie? lol
Lion Vs. Lion (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure The amazing fight scene between Wang Yu and Chin Yuet Sang make this worth the purchase alone. It's one of the most amazing fight scenes I've ever seen, and certainly one of the greatest of all time put out by the Shaws. Other Martial Arts scenes by Lo Meng and company are also good and the story isn't half bad either.
Righting Wrongs (product link) Girls With Guns / Martial Arts A true classic of [near] modern cinema. Fabulous story and great acting and fighting from Yuen Biao and Cynthia Rothrock.
The Chinese Stuntman (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Not a bad movie from the usual "cheesy" Bruce Li. This is probably one of his best, although that isn't saying very much from someone who isnt a very big fan of "Bruce Lee Clones". However if you like Bruce clones, then I suspect you'll really like this.
Choy Lay Fut / Tiger's Claw [DOUBLE FEATURE] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This set is worth getting for Choy Lay Fut alone. It's a great movie
Blood Of Dragon Peril (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Why don't more people know about this old school classic? A very underrated flick. Top action and storyline!
The Wu Tang Clan Presents Kung Fu Series #2 [5-Disc Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A great way to get a bunch of great movies at one time. You'll love at least 3 or 4 of them, and like the rest.
Fist From Shaolin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure If you like Mainland style movies with realistic action without all the "flying around" usually seen in new wave flicks, then you'll love this. If you like your action "over the top" with "superman" type stunts, go elsewhere.
Shaolin Martial Arts (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure If you like grueling training sequences, then look no further. Fu Sheng really knows how to put on a show when it comes to his training, and the "shapes" style of fighting was really groundbreaking for 1974.
Dragon In Fury (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Eh...another Bruce Lee clone flick...nothing special because you didn't get enough "Gordon Liu". Not a bad movie, but it could've been so much more.
Boxer From The Temple (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Not a Shaw Bros. all-star cast, and most of the fight scenes are just average [by Shaw standards], but a good finale.
Black Belt Theatre Emerald Collection [5-Movie Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Five decent movies at an affordable price. It's well worth it.
Shaolin Temple Against Lama [5-Disc Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Another amazing Alexander Lo Rei movie! This guy rocks and deserved to be an even bigger star than he was. Furious action from start to finish.
