| Great Sammo Hung action, especially his fight with Lau Kar Leung.
The opening is good, too, with two rival camps of the rickshaw drivers negotiating over who hauls passengers and who hauls freight. They agree and shake hands, and then the hilarious Eric Tsang comes up with a cleaver saying "I'm going to chop you." Both sides think the guy is coming for them and a battle royale ensues. A couple guys grab some fluorescent light sticks and go at it with light sabre sound effects, until they are overcome by the electrical "force". A couple others engage in Three Stooges-style eye gouging.
The story is set in 1930s Macau, and features Sammo and a group of buddies who are bicycle rickshaw drivers. Sammo's character lives above a bakery, where an older guy is the master baker, teaching a group of young ladies how to bake. The older guy has his eyes on a smouldering beauty, who of course Sammo's character is also drawn to.
Meanwhile, one of Sammo's buddies has fallen in love with a girl who is not what she appears to be.
These love angles slow down the story and involve quite a bit of melodrama, but there's enough cool action to make up for it.
There's the aforementioned fight scene with Lau Kar Leung, who plays the boss of a casino that Sammo crashes into with his pedicab at the end of a cool chase scene. Right from the chase scene into a patented Lau Kar Leung fight, with at least two styles of martial arts being demonstrated.
Also, there's a knockdown drag-out fight to wrap things up, and a really nasty gangster boss to make things interesting. |
