The Descent (product link) Horror / Thriller A true gem of a movie, its got everything you would want to make it a great horror movie. Great prodcution vaules and some nice camera work since its mostly filmed inside a cave. With it being filmed in a cave it makes the movie even more frantic and good tension. For it being an all women the acting is pretty good and they spend a good amount of time on all the characters in the movie.
Movie does start off alittle bit slow but it helps build the characters up and the second half of film makes up for the slow start.
Highly recommand this movie!!! Get it as soon as you can.
i totally agree with you i really enjoyed this great british horror film and i would highly recommend anyone to check this film out.we brits do make good films from time 2 time.
The Lady Hermit (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is my first Cheng Pei Pei film and I must say...boy am I late to the party. I loved this film! Her performance was as classy as they come.
Cheng Pei Pei plays a fighter who has been in hiding sense suffering an injury when she attempted to make an arrogant bully repent. Along comes Shih Szu looking for to make Cheng Pei Pei her teacher. Of course Pei Pei gets outed, unintentionally, and she must once again deal with this bully.
This of course in an older film, way before the flash and dazzle of the Venoms and even before the true power and grace of a Ti Lung or Chen Kuan Tai but it was still very enjoyable. Cheng Pei Pei looked great in the fight scenes and one thing she brings to the table a lot of other martial arts actors/actresses don't...she really can act.
i'm with you on that one i rated this classic 5 stars and its worth every star.this is true shaw brothers classic and its cheng pei pei at her very best.
Bow down and show some respect for one of the top ten all time greatest kung fu flicks. Lower. Let me start of by saying that I just really wanted to write a review for this movie but I acknowledge that Jay Lee probably wrote the best review for this movie already. Just giving props to those that are deserving. Now to my insane ramblings of blather that are often misinterpreted and in some cases incomprehensible due to my heavy use of logic and honesty.
This one doubles as not only my favorite Gordon Liu movie but also as my favorite Shaw Brothers movie. I know there are so many to choose from and you think that one is the best and dude over there is all like "what about the '36th Chamber'?" Well, chill, we're talking about my favorites now, not yours. We talk about your favorites in your review, sucka.
Lau Kar Leung crafts this movie and its fight scenes with inspired perfection. Gordon Liu dishes out the goods with the jack-of-all trades fu by demonstrating that old school multiple proficiency that pretty much died in the 90's when everyone could just have a single gimmick and still get by. This movie is not only arguably Gordon Liu's best martial arts performance but also Yasuaki Kurata's as well. You have to wait all the way to the end to see Yasuaki finally get down; but when he does, HOLY SHIT, he's a fuckin' smokin' now! (Maybe, just maybe, there is one "Family Guy" fan out there who got that reference. Probably not.)
Anyhow, this film has got one of the best complilations of variety in martial arts styles and weapons put to use. The Japanese performers and characters are all straight-up bad-asses, and really Japanese, unlike many other Chinese films that used Chinese actors and portrayed the Japanese as bitch-made predatory miscreants. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'. Well, I guess to truly complete a review for this movie I got to give up my favorite fight. Damn, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one favorite I would cheat and say the entire end fight with Gordon and Yasuaki, which is basically like 3-4 fights in one. I don't mean to beat a dying horse (unless it's called for or I'm bored or something), but Mr. Kurata is so frickin' slick it's unreal. The man handles a ninja-to like he was born holding one, and his crab style is one of the dopest, slickest and most creative things I have ever seen. This movie has everything for martial arts lovers including a tough chick.
I also got to say Buddha bless Dragon Dynasty for releasing these perfectly digitally remastered fu classics with the original subtitles and dubbings while including all kinds of sweet bonuses like interviews with the legends that made these movies possible. Make sure this is in your collection. Essential and severely enjoyable.

the ratings and the reviews say it all. a must have for any collector
If HKFLIX had higher star rating, this movie would be up there. The movie is amazing, it had no blood, & no finishing movies but it entertains. Plus it's a great history lesson too.
"Crime Story" was based on a true story of the kidnapping of Teddy Wang, a Hong Kong multi-billionaire. The film is considered to be fairly accurate, although director Kirk Wong had to make some changes and the police would not release a lot of information on the case. Wong still tried to portray the events as accurately as he could--for example, the location of the kidnapping in the film was very close to the real event. It has also been said that the original ending of the billionaire drowning was likely his real fate, but was changed to a happy ending at the request of his widow, Nina Wang, who owned the cineplexes.
"Crime Story" was also Chan's first film based on a true story and one of his first major dramatic roles. The action was also pretty good as Chan took more of a streetfighting approach and showed no sign of his normal lighthearted sense of humor which is probably why some fans do not like this film. There was a lot of intensity in the fighting and Chan and his stunt team took many nasty falls. The explosions and fires were also well done as the old Kowloon walled city was burned and leveled.
The acting throughout the film was very good as Jackie Chan more than proved he can pull off this type of role. Kent Chang was great as always as police inspector/kidnapper Hung. It was also amazing how actor Law Kar Ying and actress Au-Yeung Pooi San looked like the real Teddy and Nina Wang.
I think this is a good film that allowed Jackie Chan to take on a new and challenging role that could be used as an example to critics who think Chan cannot act or take dramatic roles as he progresses in age.

Superb quality work from Jackie and Kent Cheung! Ashley the world is not black or white. As you go through life you will find a lot of gray. There are times when "the truth" will only kill more people. What little was left out did not change the story.
Jackie Chan and Kent Chang were excellent in this police drama. I agree with you on Chan silencing his critics for this particular dramatic role. Jackie was also good in " The New Police Story"!
The movie was such a disappointment because in order to tell a true story the audience needs a true story of what actually happened. The action in the film was good but the truth of the story should have been told.
The Avenging Eagle (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of my personal favorites--and I'm not even a big fan of the late Fu Sheng, who did a good job in this one. I am a big fan of Ti Lung, and this one is one of the reasons why. Good plot, great weapons action, and cool costumes. Don't get much better than watching Ti Lung use the challenging three-part staff almost an entire movie. Oh yeah...Si Si is pretty hot.

Ti Lung is dependably good, and Fu Sheng shows much more acting ability than in most of his other films.
Hold onto your hats, sports fans, and try and keep your knickers dry. We have an excellent treat here for all you film lovers. This is one of those movies that can either make or break your Asian film collection. If you don't own it, stop reading right now and purchase the shit. I'll be here when you get back. Now, for the rest of you folks that still aren't sure, "Battle Royale" is monumental entertainment. It combines a deeply probing psychological survey on the effects of extraordinary stress and survival/primal extincts that manifest under extreme (and shady) circumstances in the under-developed minds of children--as well as the media-frenzied constantly escalating bloodlust. Don't be mistaken, folks, this is a story that could one day take place in our world and possibly during our lifetimes. "Battle Royale" draws from many themes of film, books, and short stories that came before it, but it molds these themes into something that winds up feeling truly original. Raw, graphic violence is mixed with stirring emotion and remarkable performances for maximum effect. While I have not read the book, I have every intention of doing so because this story holds the boldness and potency of the classics of literature such as "I Am Legend" (survival against odds),"1984" (society's dystopian circumstances) or even the "Hagakure" ("The Way of the Samurai is in desperateness...Simply become insane and desperate."-page 45 1983 ed. paperback). The film is powerful on so many levels. I did read the entire 15 volume manga though and that rocks, so you should probably go get that too. Now, understand that you will cringe a few times during your first viewing because the action is so raw and the kids are young; so this may provide slight sensory overload, but you'll get over it. You're a big kid now. This movie was everything that "A Clockwork Orange" tried to be. I personally think that Stanley Kubric failed to capture the emotional content of the book I keep hearing about (never read that book either). While one of my dudes on this site does hold that film in high regard I can't help but feel that it came off as meaningless whereas this film ("Battle Royale") comes off as profound and powerful.
If you don't have it, I would give it my highest recommendation; and if you do have it, you should probably watch it at least once every year to keep good company with a well crafted story. Thanks for the time, campers, I got to peel.

Good review. I can understand that someone wouldn't like this film for its controversial nature and content, but saying it is hyped up and not a well made film is ridiculous
Everyone should see this movie, as a test: Those who like it should be heeded; We need not listen to those who do not. It's great (so...you should heed me...really).
Great review. You definitely nailed some of the better points. I'm still trying to work-up what I want to say in my review. You handled it well. 5 stars, hands down.
Battle Royale is a hyped up movie and it's really not that great, kids killing other kids on a remote island- I guess somebody ripped off Lord of the Flies.
def. agree this is an awesome flick about kids goin wild! And agree with your point on a clockwork orange & kubrick- the novel had a much better narrative than the film. The message of the film is powerful- I love this film.
Legend Of The Wolf (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Oh man this was bad well not to bad but one of Donnie Yens worst films I've ever seen.
The choreography is bad most of is just one hit punches or kicks whenever he gets into big brawls which happens a few times.
Other times the camera either moves to fast or is to close up to really see the fighting. Others times its to dark like the start of the film.
There is one cool scene where he takes on this guy who uses a chain but its short. They tried to make this movie look violent but didn't pull it off well.
The movie gets very boring for about 15-20mins near the middle close to the end. Bad camera work, poor choreography which was ruined due to the camera work, average acting. A bigger budget could have helped this movie also the editing work.
See this if your a die hard Donnie Yen if not there's plenty of other Donnie Yen movies that are better then this.

There may be good fighting going on, but the camera doesn't pick it up.
yes you're right i would class myself a big donnie yen fan but this film sucks the choreography in this film is the worst i have ever seen from donnie yen.
Ideas makes movies successful, not necessarily $! Yen had an idea and made it work, telling a great story. And just so you know, the action was an awesome show of rising standards for Donnie Yen in his later career. What the hell movie were you watching?
Zatoichi [2003] (product link) Drama / Swordplay/Sword(s) Absolute masterpiece. Beat Takeshi weaves a wonderful satirical tale in a world full of memorable characters all the way down to the workmen who keep time with the soundtrack. Even if you aren't a fan of samurai films or have any real knowledge of the Zatoichi film series, you will love this movie.

Choco is correct: This is very much a Takeshi Kitano film, as virtually anything in which he appears is. This is a respectful but still individualistic tribute to Shintaro Katsu's Zatoichi series.
Dance Of The Drunk Mantis (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Not as good as the original Drunken Master but it still features plenty of great fight scenes that any Wo Ping fan will enjoy. Great cast and some good slap stick humor. Worth a look for fans of the Drunken Master.

The Way Of The Dragon (product link) Martial Arts total dis agree, the fight were slow, story is boring, i don't see any special about this film, why people say bruce lee is so great? has he win any world boxing match? no, has he defeat any champion? no, so he just an average human being, his movie is nothing special, just some basci kick and punch, i feel like i can do better!

mike you are an ignorante- read the books so you can understand what he accomplished and then read the books written about you.
Again Mike, this film is a product of the seventies. Bruce Lee directed, and did the fight choreography. Besides the great Chuck Norris fight, Bruce turns in an awsome comic performance!
Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai (product link) Art / Drama You people need to get aware. There was only one review for this and it sucked. Pay attention, folks, damn. Anyhow, this flick has cult king written all over it. I rarely disagree with the HKFlix evalutation of a movie but they were unreasonably hard on this one. This movie is actually quite brilliant and probably tied with "Throw Down" for best adaption of the samurai code and methodolgy to a contemporary setting in films.
"Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" is evenly distributed entertainment that is filled with great performances from a diverse and talented cast, timeless quotes from the "Hagakure" (the book of the samurai), laugh-out-loud humor and good portions of gunfire. You won't be bored for one minute if you have any kind of an attention span at all. Intelligent, provocative, funny and highly entertaining I would recommend this film to anyone.

I'd rate this slightly lower, but you are basically correct.
JJ is a director you either love or you get put to sleep. I was expecting an action flick, to my first viewing was a disappointment. Once I removed my expectations and gave it more viewings I saw what it was doing. A cameo from RZA to top it off.
This movie tried to hard to explore a character's mind set. The movie didn't not go anywhere, 4 an art picture is was just bland. The movie as a whole was not clear on wht kind of story it wanted 2 tell-therefor the actors we're distracted in their roles
The film does entertain but it's mostly for the people that are into the samurai pictures. I love samurai movies but when they modernize it, I just can't get into that stuff.
The movie was all right, I think the performances were good- I just couldn't get that much involved with it though. The movie is not for everyone, I guess I came with high expectations going in. Tht is 1 mistake tht nobody should do in a pic such as this.
Hey thnks for the comments, your right I only had one review. I thought "Ghost Dog" was an entertaing pic but it's not my taste. The film is well shot but compared to "Throwdown" that was amazing.
i just read the comment you left kungfumaniac and i'm totally with you on that one i think the reviewer in question is fubar if you dont know what that means watch tango and cash.
I agree man. This is Jim Jarmusch's vision of the samurai code, the film is entertaining. Check out Jean-Pierre Melville "Le Samouraï" it's a 1967 hitman film, the guy follows the code too. It's Johnnie To's fave film, & John Woo models his films from it.
CONTROVERSIAL REVIEW WARNING: What I got to say ain't nice. To be fair this review is for the American version of the film as I have not seen the uncut version. I would like to remind you that the exits are on both sides of the aisles. Should any danger above water present itself, the person sitting next to you can be used as a flotation device. Now just relax and enjoy the ride. Please assume crash positions.
I was cheated. I was robbed. Just about any amount of money you paid to see this movie that exceeds four U.S. dollars is a vicious ripoff. Was the fight sequence with the ladder phenomenal? Absolutely. Was that pretty much the only thing worthwhile in this flick? Absolutely. This movie brings shame to the immensely entertaining "Police Story" series by skimping on the fu and fight scenes. Of course there is an underwater fight at the end--meaning slow and lacking the type of dynamic aesthetics we have come to expect from a Jackie film. "First Strike" basically is a meandering, through-the-motions, on auto-pilot Jackie film. Perhaps I was mildly entertained at random throughout, but for the most part I just can't justify giving a movie that I only appreciated for one fight scene more than one and a half stars. Sorry but this is only for strict Jackie completists. I love Jackie just like you folks. That's why this film doesn't do it for me. He's better than that.
Do me a favor: at the next wedding you attend slap a bridesmaid on the ass during the ceremony. If you are questioned on this just tell them you got the idea from a bastard. Enjoy your movies, kids.

Speaking only of the Dimension release, this is correct.
I'm a big JC fan but the American version is a mess, but a 2 star mess for me. Try the uncut version and you'll like this film better, the problem with Dimension film releases of JC movies is the constant cutting of scenes deemed not worthy! Shame!
I saw the American cut in theaters in the late 90's. I finally got to see the original version a few years after and it was worth it. The American Cut works though it's still fun for any Jackie Chan fan.
This Jackie Chan feature has terrific stunts & a nice fight scene thrown in the middle. The action was really impressive. Though it is cheesy, it has the Mr. Chan charm. JC antics are always impressive, he's funny & fun- the film is a blast.
"Police Story 4" has a wild set-up, the movie was good. It had nice stunts, a classic ladder fight, & the under-water fight was clever. The movie was fun, and it still manages to entertain.
A very interesting entry from those wacky folks with snotty accents whom we call the French (sometimes we call them worse). "B13" has high energy and excellent momentum that carries through. There are some excellent acrobatics and martial arts techniques in this film, and it's nice to see a halfway decent exhibition of Parkour (a French psuedo-martial art that is really kind of a knockoff of Peking opera performers' acrobatic tricks in kung fu flicks--i.e. Jackie, Sammo, Yuen, Yuen, Yuen, Yuen, etc. style). Very entertaining and a fun ride. Although, I have to make a side note. The film is only a four star movie the first time you see it. Each additional viewing is more like three and a half stars, as the pace is very good but if you were to evaluate it more thoroughly you will notice it is actually quite short in the fight department. Your first viewing will sort of trick you with its good pacing, fun chase scenes and hyper active filming style, but the fights that are present are quite enjoyable and worth checking out (even though I think that there might only be two of them). Get it just to give your fu collection more diversity. You got plenty of Chinese stuff, a bunch of Japanese stuff, some good Korean stuff, that cool German one, you might as well just have to make room for some more fu from the frogs. The French, I mean. I said French. I got to cut out, Interpol has found me again. Where the hell am I gonna hide all this crap?
The plot is thin and the acting barely competent, but I don't care: The parkour, fighting and general energy level make this a very fun movie to watch.
You also got a Chile fu film "Kiltro", plus I saw a Denmark fu movie called "Fighter". It's amazing how martial arts styles influence other countries. If we all knew fu, the world would be peaceful. B:14 is in pre-production get ready for more.
Everyone and their mommas got to review this flick so pretty much everything that can be said about this flick has been said already. I guess I shouldn't even bother. Wait a minute, screw that, I want a piece too.
A lot of folks seem to think that this is one of the greatest kung fu movies of all time. Those folks know what they are talking about. This ball of thunder laced lightning hits rougher and heavier than a Kimbo Slice uppercut. We all know the deal and we all know who's in it. The real eternal question is: which match-up is sicker? Jet vs. Yasuaki Kurata, or Jet vs. Billy Chow? There's a stumper for you. They both rock so hard that if you bring up this question among your friends who are into fu flicks it will usually spark a pretty wild debate. I personally lean slightly toward the Jet/Yasuaki showdown. Something about wind and blindfolds--it just gets me going, dude.
"Fist Of Legend" is possibly the closest thing to perfect fight choreography around (perfect is relative, but honestly it might be perfect) and incorporates many martial art styles, such as Longfist, Ditang Chuan, Tong Bei, Chin Na, Aikido, Karate, boxing, Judo, Jujitsu, and quite a few more that I am probably forgetting. I know some cats say that the general was using Muay Thai. They have either poor eyesight or just improper schooling. Billy's just busting out with hardcore Karate.
This movie is the dope shit and every last one of you know it. If you haven't seen it, you better head for the hills, son, because we will hunt you down and staple you to something so we can force you to see this awesome piece of kung fu cinema history. You'll probably thank us afterwords and maybe even offer us a beer. And we'll accept. 'Cause we like beer. Keep kicking for the stars, folks. I'll be around.

An excellent piece of entertainment. Donnie's Wing Chun is like the rest of his arsenal-exceptional.
The Prodigal Son (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is it - the superlative: Frankie Chan Fan-Kei is a terrifically convincing villain - a selfish brat with no respect for others...but Yuen Biao is better, as a similarly spoiled rich kid who matures into a fine warrior....but Sammo Hung is even better, as a kind but childish martial arts master....but Lam Ching-Ying is better than any of them as an effeminate, asthmatic and noble Wing Chun master. The greatly missed Mr. Lam became a major star as the one-eyebrowed Taoist in the "Mr. Vampire" films, but this, right here, is his very finest work.
The plot is strong and well told, the acting very solid, and the martial arts superlative.
My Wife Is A Gangster (product link) Action/Adventure / Girls With Guns This is a terrifically entertaining action/comedy (about 40/60 of each) of a feral female gang sub-boss honor bound to marry at her dying sister's wish. Whatever could it mean that she is so much more beautiful as the tomboyish killer than the girly-girl bride?
Most of the action scenes are every bit as good as they are said to be, but the final sequence of the film is slightly abrupt. I think this film is rather more accessible than most Korean action flicks to audiences unaccustomed to Korean humor and graphic violence: it shouldn't scare anyone away before they realize how much Korean cinema has to offer.
Lady Snowblood: Blizzard From The Netherworld (product link) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Drama Perhaps slightly better than the sequel, "Lady Snowblood: Love Song Of Vengeance", but both are extremely good. A child born in prison to a victimized, unfairly imprisoned woman grows and is shaped into a nearly superhuman avenger. Those she punishes deserve it, and she is lovely doing it.
The Avenging Eagle (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Ti Lung starts to make the transition from brave swordslinger to tortured man of conscience, and Fu Sheng gives a more mature and well rounded performance than in previous films, so this is a significant film. The two actors were good friends, and I wish they had made many more films together.
The story is very good. Ku Feng plays an evil bandit who has adopted many orphans and trained them to be conscienceless criminals--thieves and murderers. Ti Lung's conditioning fails, and he begins to suffer pangs of remorse for his actions. Fu Sheng plays the sole survivor of a family wiped out at Ku Feng's order. Ti Lung and Fu Sheng team to defeat Ku Feng, and debts are paid.
Great pairing between the two! Ku Feng was at his villainous best! I thought both leads gave very solid performances, Ti Lung was great as usual, and Fu Sheng was outstanding in his quest for revenge.
Eastern Condors (product link) Action/Adventure / War Sammo Hung Kam Bo brings together a substantial cast with excellent fighting and acting chops in this thrilling tale of a commando team made up of hard cases detailed to destroy an abandoned weapons depot in Vietnam. Joyce Godenzi, who later became Mrs. Hung, gives a charming performance as a Cambodian guerrilla. It is surprising to learn she had no martial arts training prior to the film. She is a very quick study.
Lady Snowblood: Love Song Of Vengeance (product link) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Drama I love Meiko Kaji, as she slices down human swine who deserve to be sliced. She is so charismatic, fierce, and physically adept that it is unlikely one could find a similar performer in Japan, and a stretch even in China. Surely no psycho-killer has ever been so beautiful.
The One Armed Swordsman (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is one of the best martial arts films ever made, equally as important to the genre as "A Better Tomorrow" was to heroic bloodshed in Hong Kong, paving the way for Bruce Lee and many others. Wang Yu was excellent in the starring role and has good chemistry with the adorable peasant girl (Chiao Chiao) that tried to free him from the martial arts world that never has a happy ending. Great film on every level, although some may view it as outdated.

Legendary Weapons Of China (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is an outstanding film testimony to the skills of the great Lau Kar Leung (Liu Chia Liang). This film has spiritual boxing, comedy, outstanding choreographed fights, and character appearances by Gordon Liu and Alexander Fu Sheng. Yes it is an outstanding film! And Hsiao Ho is excellent and amazing. And he can really act! Five Stars!
I did not appreciate this properly when I first saw it. After learning more about Hong Kong film, Shaw Brothers and the brilliant Lau Kar Leung I now find it outstanding.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I don't know how some people can give this movie less than stellar ratings. The action is simply unbelievable. The movie pays homage to some other great films including "Ong-Bak". These scenes are cleverly done and are NOT rip-offs. The story, I thought, was far better than "Ong-Bak". The action was on par, and you have to keep in mind that it is a 90-pound. woman doing these things, not Tony Jaa. The acting and production values are unbelievable. I watched "The Machine Girl" right after this, and it was like night and day in terms of quality of production. Oh, and the CGI isn't poorly done. I think the only true CGI scene was the flies in the meatpacking plant. Very realistic IMO.

Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A pretty good movie with some awesome fighting in it. This girl knows how to fight. YoMama is essentially correct. The action is only slightly inferior to Tony Jaa, while the other factors are superior.
Yes, its an awesome movie. I don't get these people who say the action sucked, or the story was lacking. The story was far better than Ong Bak, production values were better, and action just as entertaining.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Bravo! Yet another Thai action blockbuster. Good action and good story. In terms of action, I wasn't bored any second during the whole movie. I thought about giving it 4 stars all the time, but after the last huge fight which looked like it was cut from a 2-D coin-op action arcade, and which made my jaw fall down, I give it four and half.
This give this movie 4 and half stars is crazy talk. Did you watch the movie? the whole movie? or just the action? The movie is just a bunch of drag queens and there was no main villian. Watch the movie again and then review.
i totally agree i rated this film 4 and half stars and i found the film really entertaining and i am someone who watch's plenty of fu flix probably too many.
I agree with everyone else man this movie was not good- You should watch more fu flix, because the action in this film is not amazing & the way you explain it to be a 2-D coin up game- well I would really like my money back. This film fails in everything.
It was an all right picture the story was lacking any character development- the audience I saw it with couldn't really identify with the hero. The action looks great but the action scenes all look the same except for the jumping from sign to sign chase.
The film was very sloppy for a martial arts film. Plus this is the man that made Ong-Bak & the protector, Chocolate just ruins his streak of fu films. The fights were all boring, the film lacks thrills & story. It was not a 4 and half star movie.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Chocolate" was an all right movie that features a new fighting talent, JeeJa Yanin. The film really should have focused on her talent more. The fights were great but nothing really amazing. The fights were basically her just dodging, punching and kicking guys, though the people she fought were really not that great or up to Jeeja Yanin standards--they could of filmed an awesome fight with somebody that knew how to fight.
Like I said before, the action is great but not amazing. So if you're an action fan then check this one out. But if you're a person that wants a good story with amazing action then pick up director Shunichi Nagasaki's "Kuro-Obi" aka "Black Belt".

YoMama says it best. This is high quality entertainment, but makes no pretense of artistry.
I am glad you criticize this movie, but if anything you rate it to high. I am continually amused by the responses of people who act like it is heresy to claim this mildly entertaining is anything less than the greatest thing since sliced bread.
The movie does deliver action. The action is not amazing as we seen it done before. The story is very sloppy and it did feel long. I agree with "Black Belt" is a great & smart martial arts movie.
got to disagree with your review lets face it how many martial arts films have good story's there aint many most people watch them for the action so in my opinion this film serves its purpose.
I have to be honest, this is not a great film, it is actually pretty boring until about an hour into the film when we get to Ti Lung...if you are not a Ti Lung fanatic like me, the film is boring until we get to the final fight which in my opinion is worth the price of the film.
Basically we follow the Archer and his big mouthed wife (Fu Sheng and Nu Nu) as they steal Lo Meng's kung fu manual...Nu Nu really suffers for this. Then we follow the two to Ching Li's house and of course she herself has a lot of drama going on. She sends them to Ti Lung who now a monk, has some sort of kung fu that if he uses a certain part of it he can heal the injured, but he himself will become vulnerable to attack...which is what Ching Li wants.
Once we get to Ti Lung we learn the back story between himself, Ching Li and Kuo Chui. Now I'm not sure if she was Ti Lung's wife or just a live in girlfriend, but basically 20 years early Ching Li layed eyes on a very young, very muscular Kuo Chui and went for it. Yup they had an affair which just didn't seem right because the Kuo Chui character had some serious mental issues...but that is pretty much played down so...anyway. When Ti Lung finds out about the affair he wants Ching Li and Kuo Chui to get married, Ching Li likes the idea, Kuo Chui says he would rather be executed. Once given the opportunity Kuo Chui can't get out of there fast enough. Ching Li ends up pregnant, she had the baby, Lo Meng thinks that the baby belongs to Ti Lung so he goes and Iron Palms it (hey, Venom's have no shame!) thinking Ti Lung will save it and leave himself vulnerable to Lo Meng's attack. Ti Lung wants to save the baby, but hey, it isn't his kid. Ching Li end's up killing the baby so that it doesn't suffer and instead of blaming her cheating slutty self or the man who ran out on her she blames Ti Lung. The man she cheated on yet he still let her stay at his palace even after he found out she had a baby.
All of this comes to a head when Ching Li tries to attack Ti Lung, get's turned back by those protecting him. On her way out she runs into Lo Meng, Fu Sheng jumps in to help and the 'brawl for it all' is on. This is one of my favorite Venom's brawl, which is why the film got 4 stars from me. Lots of weapons, lots of energy, lots of air and some of these boys got some good hang time.

There are serious pacing issues, but quite a bit of gold scattered throughout.
Shaolin Master Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Almost perfect! Captures the true essence of martial arts. Made Gordon Liu an international star!
The OUATIC series is about the adventures of Wong Fei Hung, a Chinese folk hero. This character pops up a lot (as a child in "Iron Monkey", Jackie Chan's character in the "Drunken Master" series). Each portrayal is very different and most aren't based but on the slightest detail to the actual historical character. But that aside, here's what the movies are really about:
Yes, Jet Li's character struggles with a Hong Kong overrun with British imperialists and the woman who loves him and all the drama that follows and, honestly, no one really cares. The story is an odd mix. When there aren't action sequences, much of the story plays out like a routine period piece. The story is decent and worth a look, but subsequent viewings will have you simply skipping ahead to the action sequences because...
...these are simply the best collection of HK/kung fu/wire fu fight sequences you will ever find. You have an actor at the top of his kung fu game with choreographers who are given a lot of freedom and creativity to use the actors' talents, all captured by a director at the peak of his powers. These fight sequences are the stuff of legend, the yardstick that all kung fu fights are measured against. Not to take anything away from other flicks of Jet's like "Fist Of Legend" or "Fong Sai Yuk", but these are the best. And to get them all in one package for such a cheap price is nothing short of criminal. I paid a small fortune to get these three films from HK before this version was released.
You'll see some of the most innovative and intense wirework, skill, and choreography you've ever witnessed, stuff that makes "The Matrix" look tame by comparison, despite coming out years before the Wachowskis ever put word one to paper. Every scenario you can imagine is captured, Jet vs. one, Jet vs. some, Jet vs. many, Jet with weapons, Jet with bare hands, Jet with props like an ubrella, Jet vs. flaming arrows, Jet vs. boss characters in the most insane environments you can imagine. I can't stress it enough, this is as good as it gets. Even skipping over the story, the fight scenes will entertain you and your next several generations long after you're gone. Simple as that. If you're into kung fu flicks and somehow have slept on this one, just buy it.

I and II are great, and III is flawed only in comparison to I and II. This rating is appropriate.
I completely feel you on this one. Coincidently my all time favorite Jet Li movie is a tie between the first "Once Upon A Time In China" film and "Fist Of Legend". Great reviews, man. Cool to have another reviewer with skills and sense in the mix.
Let me start out by saying, I love this movie. It is absolutely fantastic. It's like Kitamura, the director, poked around inside my brain for my two favorite cult/indie/action/gore faves and put them together. Because this film could not be a more perfect combination of "Six String Samurai" meets "Evil Dead 2", with a bunch of martial arts action thrown in. I absolutely love these types of films. This is not one of those "universally" fantastic films that anyone can appreciate. This is most certainly one of those 'specialty' flicks that only people with very specific types of tastes will love. But if you have those 'tastes', you will absolutely be amazed by this film. It really is a love it or hate it movie. First, let's briefly touch on what its about:
A former prisoner tries to escape from an enchanted forest teeming with zombies and demons, all the while protecting a girl while kicking, punching, shooting, stabbing, and slicing everything that gets in his way.
For those who are looking at the different versions, the Ultimate is the only version to get. The new music is a big improvement over the old stuff. The extended action scenes are fantastic. And the new color correction and visual processing definitely add to the overall film. Plus, all the extras are great. Ironically, this is actually more of a director's cut than the original director's cut. The original DC was just the best the director could do with what he had. Ultimate Versus actually had Kitamura going back out and shooting new scenes and extended fight sequences to cut into the original DC. Now that we've cleared that up...
This is not a film for everyone. In fact, this isn't even a film for most. This is definitely a niche film for those that love movies that are just fun, cheesy, completely unrealistic, and straight-up awesome. To most, this film is just a bunch of people running through a forest for 2 hours with some cheesy acting, lots of senseless violence, and more blood than your local Red Cross has on hand. Yes, they do run through the forest the whole movie, but it's so epic. The characters all have their "cool" turned way up, more than you would in any 'regular' film, but this is not a regular film.
The action is super mind-numbing. The gore is super-violent in a very over-the-top way. The dialogue is oddly paced and sparse and way more dramatic than is necessary. Blood flows freely as zombie limbs fly through the air time and again. But it all works. This is not a movie to critique for film class or to be studied for its deeper subtleties and symbolism. It is, in fact, unapologetically campy and violent. If you're into "gore fests" or "action bonanzas" all done with that Asian cool, then you absolutely must see this film.

Exactly! "Versus" is a thrill that exists outside the world of good and bad cinema. It is just a huge hell of a lot of fun.
The movie is a low budget horror/action picture that does not make any sense. Versus is all about style & no substance, which sometimes it is all right, but in here it's absolutely dreadful.
Good review, the movie is a blast & the director's references are slick. The movie is not for a lot of people, I agree w/ tht. The director is planning for an American remake, hopefully it can have the spunk tht this 1 did.
Ten Tigers From Kwangtung (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I really enjoyed this movie. The only letdown is the story. Apart from that, the action is unbelievable and there is lots of it. Good to see Ti Lung and Fu Sheng with the Venoms mob. If you like loads of kung fu and don't care too much about the plot, this is the film for you.

Each of the constituent parts is extremely good. The problem that the parts don't fit together intelligibly brings my score down a bit - but the cast is great, and each part has many charms. Your score is justifiable.
this was like a bad edit job. nothing made any sense. I'd rather watch a good movie with 4 good fights then a bad one with 10.alright ones no matter who's in it!
You need to watch real kung fu movies, because the story and martial arts are important in Asian Cinema. Without a good story with the action your missing the point of a true fu film.
The Magnificent Butcher (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Come ooon now! As for fight choreography goes, how can you not rank "Magnificent Butcher" as one of the all time great kung fu films ever made? The cast alone should convince you that the film is one for the history books.
The script is somewhat basic, but the performances are extraordinary! Sammo, Yuen Biao, Lee Hoi-San, Lam Ching Ying, Chiang Kam, Kwan Tak Hing, Fan Mei Sheng, Fung Hak On, Wai Pak, Chung Fat and Yuen Mao all turn in some of the best work. Add in the direction and action direction of genuis Yuen Wo Ping and you have a bona fide masterpiece!!
The Young Master (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure You can't go wrong with this Chan classic! Great story and characters, along with an all-star cast that includes Yuen Biao, Whong In Sik and Shek Kin, make this a must-see!
The end fight with Jackie vs. Whong In Sik is really something to witness. You will be ehausted just watching the Chan man in action. Definitely an early Jackie Chan classic!

Among the most remarkable of Jackie Chan's physical efforts. Almost every take must have hurt.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
While viewing the movie, I couldn't help but think of how awesome it would have been to view this film in a theater with other kung fu cinema fans!
The action in this movie is the kind of action that makes you say, "Daamm!! Did you see that?!" I could vividly see the downtown movie theater exploding with excitement, with every action scene.
I have to admit the start was a little slow, but something keeps you glued. Maybe it's the anticipation or curiosity of seeing martial arts cinema's newest sensation, Jeeja Yanin, strut her stuff. Or maybe it was the track record of the filmmaking team that produced this film and Tony Jaa's two smash hits. Whatever the reason, this film captivates the viewer.
The fight choreography is innovative and exciting and long overdue! My only hope is that the stunt men didn't permanentely injure themselves. Stunt work should be realistic LOOKING, without get seriously injured. Safety should always be the priority for any filmmaker!
All in all, this is a very engaging film. Go get it!
Sorry but this movie is entirely too overpraised. While it is somewhat entertaining, watching one fight is the same as watching all of them. This movie is pretty darn tedious.
I'm glad to see a lot of good reviews for this flick because it does kick so much ass that the asses that don't get kicked still live in fear. This review is for those of you who have not bothered to check this out yet. You're missing out. It's a well balanced blend of "old school" and "new school" sensibilities with influences ranging from classic samurai films to westerns to contemporary noir.
"City of Violence" is at its core a really tight revenge flick that plays out kind of like "Four Brothers" meets "Kill Bill" with, of course, a fairly standard twist. The martial arts aspect of the film is first class with Tae Kwon Do being showcased as an all purpose weapon that is clearly more vicious and functional amoung the people who originated it. The fights had true grit and a rawness that was mixed well with plenty of flash that gave them a distinct flavor. As for the end fight finale--it will knock your wobblies around. Wall to wall style and substance with a good story told in a good way using good talent.
If at this point you are still not interested in giving this movie a chance then fine but please move to the back of the bus and don't say shit when we pass your stop. Thanks for reading and remember nothing says "happy Easter" more than strippers and crack. I gotta go, the warden's coming.

No, I wouldn't have said it quite the same way, but this is an extremely good martial arts/revenge/thriller. The fights seem unusually authentic and direct. I have to watch this again right away.
It was awesome. But you probably already knew that. Very entertaining, funny and family friendly. You probably knew that too. But, for me, what makes this movie stand out in a truly exceptional way is its central message. The point of the whole movie is vital and connected to each one of us that exist in this whole subculture. The simple message of the story is that the world would be a better place if everyone knew kung fu. Shit, I've been saying that for years, but leave it to Stephen Chow to make it the moral of a really well told story.
There are many moments of creative brilliance and comedic excellence, yet it still maintained a good amount of homage content. Completely needed for a complete Asian film collection if only to see soccer balls get jump-spin-kicked. All around fun. And it's that good kind of humor that just makes you feel good inside like when you watched Paris Hilton go to jail.
I love fu & I love Soccer and you combined them together you get a slapstick fu movie that is enjoyable from start to finish. There should be a sequel for this film as well as Kung Fu Hustle.
I guess this is just a personal thing, but Hong Kong "comedy" in my view is about as gratingly annoying as it gets and Stephen Chow is it's most obnoxious exponent. If I wanted Buster Keaton, I would watch Sherlock Jr.
You ever get that weird feeling that you are doing something that you are not supposed to? I pretty much have that feeling all the time, but this movie can produce the same effects without even having to break out your crowbar and spray paint.
"Tower of Death" is quite the oddity. It is actually the best Bruce Lee movie available that doesn't even have Bruce Lee in it. The choreography is top notch. Yuen Wo Ping does an extraordinary job in capturing Bruce Lee's fighting style and his brand of choreography. The fights are just rockin', and this is actually probably one of the best random-as-hell kung fu movies that a lot of people are not hip too.
Hwang Jang Lee, as always, is a Godsend. The "King of the Leg Fighters" deserves a lifetime achievement award for depicting so many of the most bad ass screen villans of all time.
This flick is pretty essential and I would have given it perhaps a perfect rating for the martial arts alone if not for one detail. I had to take off one and a half stars for the plain and simple fact that the movie is fucking tasteless. Exploitation is always some ugly shit, but this movie goes so completely overboard and attempts to cash in on a dead icon and hero to millions by incorporating scenes from his other movies as well as archival footage. Grimy, just grimy.
Despite the fact that whoever put this movie together just loves the cock, it's actually pretty worth the purchase. Ignore the overwelming cheese and the naked broad that has make up that looks like it has to be removed with a sandblaster, just get it to see some dude fight like he was Bruce. Way better than all that Bruce Li and Dragon Lee garbage. Trust me, folks, I wouldn't lie to you. Unless I was trying to acquire money or sex. Speaking of which, I have a Pokemon that I am holding captive in my basement. Does anyone want to buy it? I ran out of stuff to do to it and I think it's hungry...

one star higher for me. This film was simply awesome.
Let me start out by saying that I am fully on board with Korean movies now. Between the Vengeance Trilogy, "City of Violence", "The Host", "Guns and Talks", and "Arahan", Korea has shown they can do all the genres really, really well. They very much have their own style and feel that is unique in the international film world. Glad I finally figured it out.
First off, "Arahan" comes to us from the same director/star of "City of Violence". You can expect the same well-choreographed and stylish action, all captured with a slick visual style. Engaging characters are another trademark you'll run across in this film. Only here, the mood is lighter than COV and there are quite a few genuine laugh-out-loud moments. I was really surprised how many times I heard myself cracking up.
Anyways, the story is similar to that of "The Matrix", except for the fact that these people are funny and don't take themselves so seriously as opposed to chewing up the dialogue with psych 101 teachings. Plus, this entire cast has some serious martial arts chops, none of them learned everything in the few months preceding principal photography (a side note: I love "The Matrix", just trying to make distinctions. "Matrix" is a 5-star in my book). Also, the story takes place in modern day Korea, not the Internet. But it's about a boy finding his untapped potential with the help of a hot chick and some "masters" that must fight their own Mr. Smith. You get the point.
The story, although not anything complicated, is fun and quite entertaining. The true gem of this film is the character interaction. The comedy is genuinely funny. The love/hate relationship between the male and female leads is brilliantly done. The interplay between all the characters it really a treat.
And that more than makes up for the fact that the first half is light on action. This director tends to backload his films with action because he wants to draw you in and get you invested in the characters during hour one...and it works. Understand though, once he turns it on, it doesn't stop. The second hour is one great sequence after another. It's mostly all live, with some wire-fu and CGI spots. All three elements are exceptionally well-balanced. He doesn't over-rely on CG or Wire to make up for any deficiencies in skill or creativity. It's fast, graceful, creative...these are phenomenal fight scenes.
Lastly, the contemporary setting adds a nice element. Watching people hop from skyscraper to skyscraper while the regular folk go about their business below is very creative. While the story is normal, the outstanding action and great three-dimensional characters (and their funny and caring interplay), along with some new perspectives on things, really make this a stand-out in the martial arts film genre. Like my business partner always says, "I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. I'm just trying to put a new rim on it."

Although I usually dislike wirework, when it's used in a superhero type movie it makes sense. This was a fun movie.
Return Of The 5 Deadly Venoms (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure For me this was one of the better films done by the Venom gang (a name these characters have been affectionately called by fans and distributors). What sets this film apart from various others done by the venoms is the great performance by Chen Kuan Te as the villain. His villainous portrayal using Tiger Boxing is one not to be missed!

Chen Kuan Te did make this movie very watchable. You know, I learn something new everytime I read one of your reviews. I think Dragon Dynasty should hire you.
