Let me start out by saying that I am fully on board with Korean movies now. Between the Vengeance Trilogy, "City of Violence", "The Host", "Guns and Talks", and "Arahan", Korea has shown they can do all the genres really, really well. They very much have their own style and feel that is unique in the international film world. Glad I finally figured it out.
First off, "Arahan" comes to us from the same director/star of "City of Violence". You can expect the same well-choreographed and stylish action, all captured with a slick visual style. Engaging characters are another trademark you'll run across in this film. Only here, the mood is lighter than COV and there are quite a few genuine laugh-out-loud moments. I was really surprised how many times I heard myself cracking up.
Anyways, the story is similar to that of "The Matrix", except for the fact that these people are funny and don't take themselves so seriously as opposed to chewing up the dialogue with psych 101 teachings. Plus, this entire cast has some serious martial arts chops, none of them learned everything in the few months preceding principal photography (a side note: I love "The Matrix", just trying to make distinctions. "Matrix" is a 5-star in my book). Also, the story takes place in modern day Korea, not the Internet. But it's about a boy finding his untapped potential with the help of a hot chick and some "masters" that must fight their own Mr. Smith. You get the point.
The story, although not anything complicated, is fun and quite entertaining. The true gem of this film is the character interaction. The comedy is genuinely funny. The love/hate relationship between the male and female leads is brilliantly done. The interplay between all the characters it really a treat.
And that more than makes up for the fact that the first half is light on action. This director tends to backload his films with action because he wants to draw you in and get you invested in the characters during hour one...and it works. Understand though, once he turns it on, it doesn't stop. The second hour is one great sequence after another. It's mostly all live, with some wire-fu and CGI spots. All three elements are exceptionally well-balanced. He doesn't over-rely on CG or Wire to make up for any deficiencies in skill or creativity. It's fast, graceful, creative...these are phenomenal fight scenes.
Lastly, the contemporary setting adds a nice element. Watching people hop from skyscraper to skyscraper while the regular folk go about their business below is very creative. While the story is normal, the outstanding action and great three-dimensional characters (and their funny and caring interplay), along with some new perspectives on things, really make this a stand-out in the martial arts film genre. Like my business partner always says, "I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. I'm just trying to put a new rim on it."

Although I usually dislike wirework, when it's used in a superhero type movie it makes sense. This was a fun movie.
as with my previous review, lot of people do not agree or hated, because i tell the truth, sure i never say bruce lee is not great, but he is just bit over rated as it seems, and not all of his film are good, that is the truth, like fist of fury, big boss, and way of the dragon, compare the fight to todays standard, it's very slow, the acting is cheap, and there is really nothing special. but bruce lee did show some good action in game of death and enter the dragon, that's why i give an higher rating. my piont of view is , bruce lee is an good martial art actor, he has no real fight record like mike tyson or mahamade ali, and beside of his movie, he proofed nothing that he can fight for real. movie and real fighting are so different, any one can act in kung fu film with little bit of training. but i never say bruce lee is not good, i always like him, but we should all treat him just like an normal human being, not an god, and he is never the toughest person ever lived, thanks!

Your argument is not consistent with your other reviews. Even if it were, it has nothing t do with a review of this film (which...you know...is what a review is supposed to do).
Legend Of Seven Monks (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Bit of a silly plot. The cover and description were decieving. I thought I was going to see a good story of these two legends battling it out. Turns out 3/4 of the movie was about a bunch of spice girls learning martial arts and beating up bullies. Hardly saw the masters in action at all 'till the very end final fight scene. Cheap, cheesy special effects too. Wasted my money.

Very disappointing movie considering Kurata and Chiba's previous track records
Shamo (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime I saw this flick a few nights ago and it's actually better than I expected. I heard about this movie some time ago but didn't have any interest in it. What amazed me with this film is the visuals--it looked anime as hell and the action was pretty well done. Shawn Yue is okay as the lead, but you probably won't like him because he plays a knucklehead in the film, and when you don't like the lead character in a movie, it's hard to like the movie at all. Francis Ng plays the badass karate master here and Bruce Leung plays the leader of the fighting tournament and gets to show that he's still got his stuff. The movie is very violent and is not for those who like light hearted happy films. Overall, it's better than most would expect due to decent action and visuals, but the annoying lead character and weak script kept this film from being better.
Director and writer David Mamet has a thing for words. His films are amazing because his writing is so vibrant. The characters jump off the screen with great dialogue. The pacing of most of his movies is fast and intriguing. "Redbelt", which is his latest film, proves that the man has never left the building. The film moves with such ease, and in the end you will definitely feel rewarded. David Mamet and his alumni company has made a genuine modern samurai picture. Samurai movies have made an impact on film history; the stories are often noble with the main character struggling to uphold the code. There are many directors that have modernized the samurai films from Jean-Pierre Melville to Johnnie To. Most of the revamped samurai movies often add pop culture or a sly reference to Akira Kurosowa, but with "Redbelt" the movie feels fresh and adds so much more for the experienced samurai fan and any casual viewer.
The story is about a young man named Mike Terry who owns a self defense studio, he teaches a class following the samurai code. The studio is seeing financial problems though the young man does not seem to care. Mike Terry knows that his life is tough, but his codes make it easier for him to survive until a tragic night which triggers events which turn his world upside down.
The film amazes me because in the beginning the environment is so peaceful and throughout the movie it opens up so much from the simplicity of it to the chaotic world we live in. Nobody has ever said the road to nobility was an easy path.
David Mamet has written an intelligent film . He has opened up a new world in the modernized samurai picture and it will leave any viewer with amazement. It also has brilliant dialogue which adds so much volume to the story's twists and turns. Mr. Mamet’s alumni cast are perfect for the film. “Redbelt” is a movie that survives multiple viewings, it's one of those films that is rare in cinema today.

I was equally impressed with the film, but your review clarifies what I could not yet express. Mamet is an extraordinary talent, but I was amazed that he could express such nobility in the character of Mike Terry: It's not what I would expect from him.
So true. This film is outstanding and compelling. When Mike Terry's girlfriend asks if he feels his code is noble and he says he believes it is correct I wanted to get out of my seat and scream "HELL YEAH!" I might have.
