I bought the film in China (in Chinese without English Subtitles) while I was living there. So you can imagine it was a little hard for me to understand at first. As my Chinese improved, it got easier to understand exactly what was going on. Basically there was an evil king, who was seperated from his twin brother at birth. The twin brother was a noble warrior, and the king was evil and cruel. He thought it would be a good idea to have his double go out and pose for him as if he were king. When the noble brother started to do good things for the people, the king grew angry and decided to show the noble one a lesson by throwing him in jail with an iron mask on his face. When the noble brother convinces the gaurds, or gets cleared by someone who knew what was going on, they decided to release him. Then they got the king back by throwing him behind bars with the iron mask on his face, and the noble twin takes over. Thus the king pays for the bad deeds he did to his brother. The movie ends with the two brothers having it out, and it turns out to be a pretty good movie. Again, it's not one of the best, but it's definitely really good.
Often described as Hong Kong's response to "Gone With The Wind", this two-part epic, set during the tumultuous years of World War II, is my favorite movie of all time. I think it is better than "Gone With the Wind". Then again, I think all the Chinese movies are...
"The Blue And The Black" is a love story that takes place during World War II. It stars the one and only Lin Die, and the crazy part about it is that right after the film took place she committed suicide in real life, so the movie was very famous because it does have a second part. It is a love story about a young woman who is considered to be an orphan even though she lives with her grandmother, because her real parents are dead. Because of this, and her beauty, she is considered to be an outcast. Her home life is very out of wack, as she lives under strict rules and is very often punished. The story starts off at some party where she makes eye contact with this very sensitive but very cute and charming man. From there it was love at first sight. They ended up having a night of ice skating, and decided from there that they were in love. As most of the family agrees that the two make a great couple, granny is dead set against it. It ends up that they meet up secretly and the the guy gets beat up and Lin takes him home and spends all night taking care of him. When she arrives home her granny goes nuts and decides to lock her in. And when he awakens the next day, he is told that he is not to see her either. With him being sensitive and all, he goes nuts without her, and she ends up leaving him and and going to nursing school and getting a place. When she confronts him to pack his stuff, he chickens out.
The movie has a lot of going back and forth with the two and it ends with a cliffhanger where he goes off to fight the Japanesse. So I just ordered part 2 and will let you all know the second I finish watching. It is a beautiful story, it made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. It is a collectible and is definitely worth adding to your collection. It is my favorite movie.
Beyond The Great Wall (product link) Drama / Historical A beautiful love story with amazing scenery, and the best Lin Dai. I cried the whole time. I absoutly love Lin Dai.
The Magnificent Concubine (product link) Chinese Opera / Drama A beautiful love story, which is a must-see. Never have you seen a more beautiful story--a concubine sacrafices her own life so the emperor can maintain peace. A must-have.
Love Without End (product link) Drama / Romance The best movie I've ever seen. Not joking. If you are into classic love stories that are heartbreaking, you will definitely love this.
Lin Dai and Guan Shan again play outstanding rolls together. I am absolutely head over heals for Guan Shan, and Lin Dai couldn't be more classy and beautiful. Every time that lady sings, I get the chills. Anyway, Guan Shan and Lin Dai have great chemistry. I love the famous schemer he always does when he is fussing over, like in "The Blue And The Black" Part 1 and 2. Guan Shan is 100% a timeless actor.
The Blue And The Black 2 (product link) Drama / Martial Arts Even though the first half was amazing, for some reason the second half was even better. Oh, and by the way, "The Blue And The Black" kills "Gone With The Wind". That's just my opinion though--I mean, watch for yourself, I think you all will agree.
The Last Woman Of Shang (product link) Drama / Historical Another hreat one starring Lin Dai. I love Lin Dai, so I am not able to pass judgement on her that would be negative. To me, all her grace could make anything stand out. Of course the sacrificial ending makes you want to scream, but what else can you expect from Run Run Shaw? I guess Shaw Brothers films are more realistic than other films, and in life we mostly don't get everything we want. Also get "Beyond The Great Wall" and "The Kingdom And The Beauty".
Fallen Petals (product link) Drama / War Loved it, I just got it today. It was another heart breaking story by the Shaw Brothers. I will watch it again and again. It is a must-have.
The Goddess Of Mercy [1966] (product link) Drama / Historical My favorite movie of all time. It's about the start of Buddhism in China. The noble princess got her family to convert after a lot of heartache. You really need to watch it. I am actually going to pop the movie in now. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. It's not a martial arts film, it's a drama.
