Bio: I am 25 yr old man & I love films, I love every genre. My favorite genres are martial arts flicks, action, & film noirs. My background is filipino & I also trained in filipino martial arts which I recieved a black belt. I recently retired from the military. Now, working for a film magazine. I love Bruce Lee, Gordon Liu, Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, Yuen Wo Ping, Cynthia Khan, Michelle Yeoh, Lo leigh, Wang Yu, Jacky Wu, & Stephen Chow films.
I saw the movie "Doomsday" in March of 2008 in theaters. I remember watching it back then in a crowded room full of Neil Marshall fans and when it ended we weren't impressed and I was annoyed by how sloppy the film was and the many references to better films that Mr. Marshall puts into a 113-minute movie. The crowd and I were disappointed with the film because it's a mess. Neil Marshall has given great work in the past. His first film, "Dog Soldiers", showed a promising director. The second movie he made was "The Descent", it was thrilling fun-house scare. It reminded me what a horror film should be. Then came "Doomsday". By watching the film, you can't help think that the director wanted to go a new route--instead of a carnage, cringing, and captivating horror film he wanted to make an action picture; and how the horror and action collide baffles me. Did Neil Marshall write this movie when he was intoxicated? Because the uncut version and the cut version look sloppily made.
The story is over-the-top about a virus that spreads throughout England killing thousands of people. The government decides to quarantine the virus site. The quarantine is successful. Three decades later, the Reaper Virus violently resurfaces in a major city. A team of specialists, including Eden Sinclair, is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. When I first read about the plot, I thought it was going to be exciting and original. It wasn't either exciting or original, The film had too many references to better movies.
I enjoy directors that acknowledge other directors or films in their movies. If a director can do that in his movie it makes it more personal for the audience. Quentin Tarantino does that with all his films in a way that it is personal but somehow original. The sharing of references goes for a lot of directors from Paul Thomas Anderson to the Coen brothers. Neil Marshall did a wonderful job of good reference in "Dog Soldiers"--he is a fan of Sam Rami's "Evil Dead" series and with "Dog Soldiers" it truly shows. "Doomsday" on the other hand had a promising plot but just ended up as a mess with too many references like the virus spreading, which is from "28 Days Later", to Eden Sinclair's one eye from "Escape From New York", the quarantine wall looks like it is from "Jurassic Park", the bus chase is from Walter Hill's "The Warriors", the post-apocalyptic wardrobes and car chase is from "The Mad Max" trilogy, and the castle and castle wardrobes is from "Robin Hood" or "Lord Of The Rings". The movie is just one big shout-out to better films.
"Doomsday" is not an original film, the visual style is sloppy, and either cut or uncut you still get bad editing. The many references to better movies ruins any credit of a good time at the movies. If Neil Marshall does not want be the horror guy anymore, he should have made a straightforward action picture. In "Doomsday" we get a mess of everything that Mr. Marshall enjoys and more. If you enjoy a messy film then you would enjoy this mess. There is one good point to the film which is, it's about time that we see the beautiful Rhona Mitra get a starring role. I am tired of seeing her in the background of other movies playing a supporting character. Though she may want to call her agent, because she should have been in the background of this sloppy movie.

What happened here? The director went crazy & didn't really give us an original story. This movie being for the fan boy or girl, really dissappoints them though bc it tries to be like the other films- it just fails into a complete crap masterpiece.
Ultimate Force (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts I am a fan of UFC. It's a great sport. I wish I could say the same for "Ultimate Force". This film is a total waste, with crappy action and story.
The film stars UFC alumni Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic, who plays the main character. I know that Mirko is not an actor, he's a fighter, and he does not speak English well; but hey, if Steven Seagal can get a lot of lines in his films, at least let Mirko be able to speak his own language--because it was really odd to have our main character silent until the very end.
The set-up is nice, having our hero going to an island to save someone, but the pay-off was really weak. The fights were horrible and the action was a bore. There was no style and no entertainment throughout this flick. So for everybody out there looking for a gem, do not check this film out. It's a waste of time and you're better off watching UFC.
The Tiger Blade (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime "The Tiger Blade" is a messy, bizarre actioner from Thailand. The movie is a waste of time with nothing impressive or dazzling for your eyes. The action was cliche and the mismatch story was dreadful. I expected so much from this film but I am happy that this film ends.

yes and i [wasted my money on] this crap expecting something good from the studio behind tony jaa's films, i could've did something special with that money :'( LOL
Resident Evil: Extinction (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction The "Resident Evil" franchise is a complete mess. I admit the first was alright, then came the bizzare campy sequel which was okay, and now with "Extinction" it shows you that Hollywood does not know anything about video games but simply tries to ruin them.
"Extiction" is a poor man's "Mad Max" meets Stephen King's "The Stand". And it was an awful piece of romp. It has a bizzare cast, mixing all B-list talent, and too much unessesary CGI. The story was a bore and did not make sense and the action was ridicolous and cliche.
But what I did like...was that it ended. But there is still hope for the animated "Resident Evil" movie--hopefully Hollywood gets it right the 4th time around.
Spirited Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Spirited Killer" is a complete waste of time. The story does not make that much sense and the characters were one dimensional. This being a martial arts film, people don't really care about the story--they want to see the fights! Sadly the fights were messy too--there were no thrills or excitement in the movie. Do yourself a favor and save your money for something else.
Dragon Wars (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction "Dragon Wars" is a complete waste of time and b-listed talent. The story was crap and the action was dull. If this was supposed to be a movie to watch while drinking, well then they succeeded with that.
Another Public Enemy (product link) Drama / Crime I just have to say I love the first "Public Enemy". It was witty and it had nice action brawls. I got the 2nd "Public Enemy" because I heard there was a third one coming out and I am a completist.
"Another Public Enemy" is a bad film, losing the excitement and attitude of the first. It was odd too me that we lost that appeal because we basically have the same stars and director. The story changed a bit: we now get Detective Kang as prosecuter Kang chasing the bad guys. The movie is a 143 minutes of pure dullness with no action for bonus. We do get some light laughs from three convicts, but other than that all we get is a thin plot, no thrills, light comedy and a complete waste of time. Well there is still hope for "Public Enemy 3".
Fighting Beat (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Fighting Beat" is a low budget production and it shows. The story about a young man named Khem who has a two jobs that attend to tourist and wants to avenge his father's death. The story just goes everywhere from drama to comedy and some action. The problem with this movie, is that it does not know where to begin. The action scenes are just plain boring, lacking the exciting thrills that we see so much from Thailand. The fighting scenes are terrible because there was too much slow-mo and there was not enough action to call this a fighting movie. There were some parts that tried to be funny but just ended up as stupid. I expected so much from this movie that says on the cover, "in the tradition of 'Ong-Bak'". Sadly, all we get is a people that think this is "Ong-Bak" because it was made in Thailand.

I saw this movie and read the reviews your review sounded dead on
War (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts It was a shame to see great stars being lame. "War" is ultimately the worst picture I saw over the summer. I remember watching the flick with a packed crowd of fans of Li and Staham, and as soon as the movie was over all you could hear was a roar of boos. "War" had a lot of potential for it, but sadly it just ended up as garbage. And don't get me started on its ridicoulous plot-twist ending. What a shame.

i totaly agree about the review, this got to be jet li's worst movie, the story is strange, but the biggest flow is the action, where are they? don't tell me i don't know about asian film, i watch them all, we want action, that's why we all here !
Tabanfire (product link) Martial Arts / Thriller What am I watching? I questioned myself when I saw this picture. "Tabanfire" is a horrible mess with its silly CGI and awful acting, plus a poor plot. The flick had some nice fancy fighting, but not enough to reccommend this to anyone.
Set To Kill (product link) Triad / Crime "Set to Kill" is a fast-paced, plot-twist-ending kind of flick. But I wish it wasn't that fast on pace so that we could actually follow the characters. The plot twists in the story are pretty awful, and the style of the film was trying too hard to be cool. "Set to Kill" is a poor effort on everything.
Drunken Monkey (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A ridicolous plot can always ruin a movie, and that is what you get in "Druken Monkey". The fight scenes were dull, and nothing about these fights was original. Do yourself a favor and avoid this title.

zero stars is harsh but finally someone that saw the film for what it was, and it was not that good.
Yesterday (product link) Science Fiction / Action/Adventure Okay there's really nothing exciting in this futuristic action flick called "Yesterday". The film is a complete mess and the viewing experiece is terrible. The action pieces are sloppy, which makes "Yesterday" a more awful movie than it already was.
Tube (product link) Action/Adventure / Thriller "Tube" is another Hollywood rip off from Korea. Think about the ending of "Speed" with the subway and then you have this silly action flick. The opening was great, guns blazing and a hard bioled cop kicking ass--what more do you want in an action flick? Sadly that was the only excitement. The plot was horrible, and the action scenes were cliche.
The Great Challenge (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts A sequel to a bad movie called "Yamakasi", but in "The Great Challenge" the group moves from Paris to Thailand--to do what? Help freaking kids again, give me a break. What is up with this gang and kids? Anyway, we find the gang in Thailand to help build a gym for the kids over there, but they get into trouble with three men dressed like they are from India. The action scenes are a big miss in this film, They are not good at all. A terrible movie for anyone that wants to know what Parkour is all about, and a terrible movie for all.
Yamakasi (product link) Crime / Drama I like Luc Besson movies. I thought "District B-13" was amazing, and "Leon" is one of my favorite films. But in "Yamakasi" there are a lot of things wrong, mostly dealing with the story. If you're gonna' showcase a movie about Parkour, why are you going to make it a sappy Robin Hood kind of story? I want to see people jumping off buildings and landing on other buildings, or even an amazing rooftop chase across the Paris skyline. Not in this movie. You get a sick kid and a group of suckers that want to save the kid, because they blame themselves for his accident. I just didn't buy that. It did have some nice stunts, but not enough.
"An Empress And The Warriors" is a disappointing film for all epic/martial arts film fans. At first I was excited to see an off the wall action and epic movie, that the trailer implied. In the end, I was frusrated and disappointed that I wasted my money on this garbage.
The trailer of the movie was hands down awesome! But don't be fooled by what you saw in the trailer because it is not what you get on-screen. The film is a total chick flick with short and uninspired action sequences for the men. Plus this movie is not a Donnie Yen actioner. He is one of the supporting characters. The main stars of the film are the empress and the medicine man.
There is a lot of sentimental feeling in this movie. And with the sentimental feeling comes cheesy and cliched dialogue, such as "I'll wait for you". And with the cheesy dialogue we get a homemade balloon ride over the forest with some modern, poppy, and romantic song in the background.
The action scenes are rare and brief--we get the empress protecting the medicine man's tree house. The empress in a battle scene. The empress chased in the forest. And the notable action piece, the two-minute battle with Donnie Yen kicking ass. The final action scene has the empress fighting a one on one fight. Though it may seem like a lot, it is not. Again the action pieces are short. There are too many cheesy love scenes.
I cannot recommend this film to anyone. There was bad editing, too many sappy moments, and not enough action. The film is short but there weren't enough thrilling moments. I am giving this film a half star for the Donnie Yen scene, where he fights dozens of men. Again, there is no reason to buy this flick for that one reason because it is short and not too memorable for any DVD collection.
"An Empress And The Warrior" is a chick film with so many corny lines. It's as if the director saw "Titanic" and "Musa: The Warrior", then took the background of "Musa: The Warrior" and the lines from "Titanic", and cut all the action scenes from "Musa" to make a film about an Empress and a medicine man. This film is a waste of time and talent.

This film didn't just disappoint. It actually hurt my feelings.
this review is funny, but your right about everything in it. This film is poorly done. The action was lacking for anybody that is a fan of these flicks- I hear you with this bein a chick film. I wanted an kung fu warfare combat film.- got love instead.
Your points were all right JV47842, The action was little & not enough for any kung fu, war combat fan. I agree, this is also a love story than an action epic. A disappointing movie & the hot air balloon ride wtf. A waste of time.
Agree, with your half star rating. "The Empress And The Warriors" was a terrible film, I expected a martial arts epic but I got a love story instead. The other reviewer is wrong about this movie, the action was not satisfying for any martial arts fan.
This movie is a good movie for purchase. The movie provides several characteristics of war; love, hatered, jealousy, vengence, greed...The list goes on. The movie's action is satisfying and the martial arts is good for warfare combat.
Muay Thai Chaiya (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Muay Thai Chaiya" started off like a gritty gangster flick meets underwolrd fighting. Sadly, the movie had beautiful images but it was a little mismatched on everything from story to what kind of film it really wanted to be. It had a nice opening that resembled the movie "Goodfellas" with some Thai boxing but it didn't go that route. This is not a fighting movie, it's a movie about fighting and how dirty and violent it is. With that being said, don't expect an all-out brawl, this is not that movie. The characters were not that interesting to follow, but with some nice camera tricks and visuals that's why I am giving this flick a half star. "Muay Thai Chaiya" had so much potential about dirty fights and the men and women that contribute to this way of life. Do yourself a favor and skip this flick.

I agree. I only wished I had passed on this flick.
Yo Yo Girl Cop (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime "Yo Yo Girl Cop" has an over-the-top premise about girl who is trained to kill with a yo yo. With that excellent story I wish I could say the same thing about the movie. The story was complex, about suicide student bombers and Yo Yo girl cop going undercover to catch the bastards behind these crimes. Directed by Kenta Fukasaku, who wrote the brutal and amazing "Battle Royale". The problem with this movie is that a lot of the CGI looked fake and the action was dull--it reminded me of the "Power Rangers" days. What's also suffering is the balance of the film--is it trying to make me laugh or am I supposed to be scared? It just didn't make sense. The premise is so good on paper, but I am sad to say it's not even decent on the screen. But there is hope for other movies with an idea of a lame toy weapon movie--how about Hacky Sack Girl Cop? That would work.
Thai action movies have two categories: there is the "good" category, like "Ong-Bak"; and then there is the "this film sucks" category, like "Fighting-Beat" or "Dynamite Warrior". In some cases a Thai action film just ends up in the middle, like "Chocolate". The movie "Brave" ends up in the middle category--it doesn't suck that much but it's not that good. There is a new fighting sensation in town and I am not talking about JeeJa Yanin. I am talking about Mike B. This guy has moves and his moves remind me of early Jackie Chan films.
The movie "Brave" showcases his style in two good action scenes. The memorable one is inside a construction site where he dodges and kicks the hell out of people. Also in that scene there is a spectacular stunt where Mike B. jumps off the building and catches an iron rod hanging from the ledge. It was impressive, because Mike B. does his own stunts too. The second good fight is at the end where he kicks and punches his way out of the building.
"Brave" has some good action set pieces, but where that delivers everything else just fails. The story is about a young man who is forced by the mafia to steal a bank's client data in exchange for his brother's life and discovers he and his brother have been set up. It sounds simple reading it, but following it is confusing. The writer adds subplots about Mike B's fat brother which make no sense or give any added detail about the characters. There is a lot of double crossing in a movie that shouldn't have any double crossing set-up to begin with. The majority of the people that are going to watch this film are martial arts fans. The director and writer should have taken that into consideration. In "Brave" we have some nice action pieces but the story and acting are horrible. Also with "Brave" we don't get an ending, well not a clear ending--it simply just ends.
This film is a mess but I did enjoy the two action pieces. "Brave" is not a movie to get hyped up about. Aside from the two action pieces, you still have 72 minutes of a confusing story to follow. Mike B. is very talented and hopefully with his next movie it shows.
Running Wild (product link) Crime / Thriller "Running Wild" is a buddy-cop flick, but instead of the funny hijinks like "48 Hrs." or the "Lethel Weapon" franshise, this film is serious the whole way through with little action or suspense and a lot of sappy emotional parts to make another movie for the Lifetime Channel. The style tried to hard to be orginal. It also had unnecessary close-ups of the characters frequently. I did like the two leads together, but other than that just skip this flick.
The Legend Of Zu (product link) Martial Arts / Fantasy Tsui Hark's "The Legend of Zu" is a visual and gorgeous eye candy but that really doesn't make a film great. The film lacks a plausble plot. Though this movie has massive visuals of CGI mess, I just couldn't really get into it, I felt I had to belittle myself to appreciate it. And with that being said maybe little kids would enjoy this mythical feast.
Initial D (product link) Action/Adventure / Drama "Initial D" is a flick for the fans of "Initial D". For me I'm not a fan, but what I did like was the pure goofiness of the flick. It kept me entertained, so good job on that. But sadly the racing scenes get repetative because they all look the same. Though it was fun to watch Anthony Wong being a clueless man. 1 star for this movie; it has a nice cast but that's all it really has. The car scenes were boring but this flick is for the fans.
Fatal Contact (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A lot of nice fight scenes do not make a good movie about fighting. "Fatal Contact" is a painful movie to watch because to get to the action scenes you have to sit through poor acting and ridiculous characters and it is not worth it at all. The fight scenes are intense, but the story is horrible, and the ending--if you make it that far--is out of nowhere. The ending and the whole vibe of this movie is like a teen after-school special mixed in with fight scenes. With the title "Fatal Contact" I was thinking it's gonna be good, plus the main star Jacky Wu he's awesome in "Tai Chi 2", "SPL", and "Invisible Target". But sadly his talent is wasted in this poor film about fighting.

finally someone actually speaks out about this drama fu film.
I must completely disagree. A lot of good fight scenes do make a good movie about fighting. I think that you might be disregarding the purpose of its respective genre. Many great fu flicks are bad films.
Dragon Squad [2005] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Maybe it's supposed to be the Hong Kong version of the "Naked Gun" series. "Dragon Squad" is a waste of time! Is it supposed to be a spoof of Hong Kong cop thrillers because that is how the movie is played---with an ensemble cast and crew including cult icon Micheal Biehn from "Aliens". The blame could go to the writer/director of the flick, Daniel Lee, who also made "Star Runner". "Dragon Squad" is a waste of talent from everybody. There was a lot of action but it's been done before and it has been done better by other movies in this genre, such as "SPL" or even the "Police Story" franchise.

Daniel Lee is like the Uwe Boll of the Asian cinema
Outpost (product link) Horror / Action/Adventure "Outpost" is a movie that has so much potential for the next action and horror genre, but in the end stupid cliches, poor dialogue, and unconvincing creepiness gives this flick a one and half stars.
"Outpost" has a decent plot, taking cues from the film "Predator", with a bunch of mercenaries on a mission to help a shady man in war-torn Europe. Like I said the story is decent but the action and scares were dull, lacking any thrills about a story dealing with testosterone because there are no women in this film.
But I do see an up and coming star, Ray Stevenson, he was a bad ass in this flick and a great actor, plus he is the new "Punisher". I wish I could say the same thing about the movie.
800 Bullets (product link) Western / Comedy A parody of spaghetti westerns, and I thought that day would never come. "800 Bullets" is a zany and imaginative story, but it just needed a better story teller to tell this tale about a runaway child on a western movie set. The film looked fun for the cast, with a crazy saloon party and naked women running around, but the flick just dragged on and the gags were stale towards the end. The story needed to be focused on more than the stupid jokes.
Pom Pom And Hot Hot (product link) Comedy / Action/Adventure A cult classic in American Cinema. Pom Pom and Hot Hot has a lot of flavor for any genre fan, if it is comedy or action they want mixed with a little romantic scenes for the ladies. Though I find this movie falls flat--too flat on everything. There are a lot of things wrong with this flick, mostly dealing with the comedic performances. The laughter runs dry after the couple of jokes, then you find yourself rushing for the alright (I've seen this before in another movie) action ending, an homage to A Better Tomorrow 2 mixed in with the warehouse scene of Hard Boiled. The action ending is the only reason to watch this film, but really you're not missing anything amazing if you've seen any other John Woo film or any other film that involves someone holding two guns. I wish it could have been better, with a unique title and a funny storyline. I wish it could have been better.
My School Mate, The Barbarian (product link) Comedy / Action/Adventure The movie is just some mindless entertainment. The film dragged a bit, but other than that it was just okay.
Being a warlord amongst your blood brothers is a tough line of business. "The Warlords" is an epic movie, epic in scope, sound, set design and cast. The film is also a remake of a Shaw Brothers classic movie "Blood Brothers". Why remake that? Anyways, "The Warlords" is another epic war/costume flick--I've seen so many of these films, now with "The Warlords" it just looks like all the other war movies we've seen in the past. This film really does not showcase the war, there are only about three action scenes and they were not exciting. You'll also find the sappy emotional war music that we've all heard before. This movie is not about the war, it's about the characters. The cast is simply perfect for this movie, but if you're expecting a violent style action war epic you're in the wrong movie. Watch the flick for the acting, because it's another period piece. But then again we've seen films like this before.

This film is not just like every war film. I can't agree with any of the snide negative comments. How much more freaking violence is required? Some people have no clue.
Agree- we've seen this all before but in better films, people only like this film because they have a crush on Jet Li, but this film is same old same old-nothing original in it.
will since you so picky, why don't you make a film like that? we never get enough of jet li, that's the reason we see this film, if you are better than him, why don't you proof it????
Dog Bite Dog (product link) Crime / Drama A movie with realistic fight scenes, but it is not a fighting movie and there are not a lot of fights. "Dog Bite Dog" is a violent film with grittiness but no attitude. A story that resembles a little "Danny the Dog" mixed with another story about a hit man and a cop on revenge for his partner's death. The movie does have an explosive ending which I won't get into for the simple fact it does not make any sense. The stars of the film were really good and talented, but in a movie called "Dog Bite Dog", there should have been more fights and more action, and they should have left the girl at home. Though there is always a girl in the picture.

Yes! someone actually saw this movie- it's one of those WTF fu films.
Agreed that this is not your typical kung fu fighting movie...this one has a real plot and character development. Of course, to some plot + character development = boring. To others it amounts to a badly needed breath of fresh air for the genre.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Thailand's action director Prachya Pinkaew's latest martial arts effort, "Chocolate", misses its punches and kicks on the story and character development. It also misses Mr. Pinkaew's trademark of over-the-top action sequences. The director has given audiences thrilling martial arts masterpieces from "Ong-Bak" and "The Protector". I suspected that Prachya Pinkaew wanted to go a new route in a martial arts movie, which is to focus on a emotional story and add some fights. The new route he has taken is lacking in heart and thrills, even "Ong-Bak" had heart about a man destine to get back a statue. "The Protector" had a man destined to get his elephant back. The director's previous movies had heart and thrills, but "Chocolate" lacks in that department. I admire directors going new routes in their films, it establishes them to be better directors. I am not putting all the blame on Prachya Pinkaew, this being the first movie he did not write. The first writer of the film wa Nepalee Sakweerakul (this is his first writing effort). Second is the writer and director of "13:Beloved", Chukiat Sakveerakul. I was very pleased with the movie "13:Beloved". It was a throwback to Alfred Hitchcock films and I enjoyed the comic. But with the film "Chocolate", we get a sloppily written story, which makes the film messy.
The set-up of the movie is very slow. The audience is not introduced to the new fighting sensation JeeJa Yanin until twenty minutes in the movie, where she is catching balls (literally) and fruits that her chubby best friend throws at her. CGI fruit and balls helped her a lot on that scene to impress upon a crowd that she has fast reflexes, and then a young punk throws a knife at her. We are finally introduced to her kicks and punches in a brief altercation. This was the twenty-minute mark. If you are a patient viewer, you would have to sit through the story about a criminal boss' hench-woman and criminal boss' associate and their love for each other. The criminal boss finds out and goes bat-crazy, shooting his own foot. The man and woman are on the run, and the woman says she's pregnant. The man leaves her and the mother is all alone taking care of her deaf child. The criminal boss returns with his drag-queen goons and cuts off one of the mother's fingers as the deaf child watches and cries. Then the scene cuts to the deaf girl, we see in a montage that she is interested in Thai fighters in front of her house, kung fu movies, her chubby friend, mom, and of course chocolate. Her kryptonite is flies, she really hates flies.
The action scenes are all right, starting with the first action sequence in the ice factory where she mimics Bruce Lee but thinks about Tony Jaa from "Ong-Bak". I was a little confused by that scene--shouldn't she have thought about Bruce Lee instead? In that scene ice is thrown at her, and she dodges it left and right. The second fight is in the warehouse where she fights atop crates and wooden platforms are thrown at her. The next action scene is in the shady butcher shop where the opponents are strapped with butcher knives and again the knives are thrown at her as she dodges them left and right. The last and final action scenes are on top of a roof where she fights thug girls that look like the fly girls from the show "In Living Color". Then the fight scene in the restaurant where she fights people with swords and a man with glasses that is on crack, I suppose. The most exciting out of all the fights is the one on top of billboards and restaurant signs--it was good and enjoyable.
The major problems of the movie were the lack of character development. I personally could not recognize any of the characters in the movie; they were lacking heart or any emotional impact. The story was a major problem too. There were a lot of parts that could of been cut out, like the beginning and some of the emotional parts. Another major problem was the action: there are three action scenes that look the same but in different locations--one in the butcher shop, second the warehouse, and third the ice factory. These action scenes were all the same with the same bad guys trying to attack JeeJa Yanin. The bad guys of the movie were a major problem as well. JeeJa Yanin fights a lot of people in the movie, but none of her opponents were really worthy, which lacks any danger for Miss Yanin. This is supposed to be a martial arts movie, we need a worthy opponent for our hero. If there are no good matches in a kung fu film, then it lacks excitement for the viewer. JeeJa Yanin's character is invincible in the movie, she is like a superhero and her kryptonite is flies. If this was supposed to be a superhero film, the writers should have established that. "Chocolate" is not a superhero film, it's about a deaf girl that fights and never gets hurts except when there are outtakes. There are a lot of martial arts films out there with a hero fighting off an opponent that is worthy to fight with. In this movie our main villain shoots himself in the foot and is surrounded by a group of drag-queen goons--maybe he should have read the guidelines on being a villain and stopped running away from a deaf girl.
"Chocolate" is not a five star masterpiece. We are missing the intense and thrilling action scenes, plus a decent story to follow. The character development is also missing. "Chocolate" is not a zero star movie, it does have some fun for the viewer. I am giving the film two and half stars even though it has three action scenes that look the same and henchmen that are no match for JeeJa Yanin. I did like the fight on top of the billboards, it was creative and original. There was a scene I enjoyed, in the butcher shop, where a man throws a knife at our hero but it bounces of a springy fence and strikes him on the shoulder. To me that's priceless entertainment.

nice review- first real review of the movie thanks for the details. The movie has potential but didn't go anywhere
So many words for the simple action flick which solely purpose is to entertain audience which is done more than well. Isn't it better to leave the character development and other talks for psychological movies? Leave your brain and let yourself entertain.
i must disagree with you i found the film very entertaining makes a change to see a female kick plenty of ass.i suppose every one has different taste's each to there own.
"Tears of the Black Tiger" is a campy Thai flick with homages to westerns, Thai theater, and gangster pictures. This film, which was made in 2000, has been playing around at festivels all over the States for quite some time now.
There are some people that find this flick impressively done and others that butcher it. I am in between in this picture, it has its ups and downs.
I love how the picture looks, it has nice visuals. And the violence is brutally shot. But we also have a terrible score and wooden acting. Yes, I know this is supposed to be a stylish flick, but too much style can ruin a movie, and with this movie the style just dragged on sometimes. It's pure modern cult cinema, and with cult films you either love it or hate it or pick some great stuff from the movie.
I am giving it two and half stars. It has its moments but that's about it. I'll recommend it to any art students out there for its colorful look.
Whiteout (product link) Action/Adventure Stupid story and silly characters but I wanted an action film. "Whiteout" has all the cheesiness of a solid-action B-movie. I got this film because I heard a rumor of Stallone and "Cliffhanger 2"--which he supposely wants to do on a freakin' dam--I think that's awesome! The movie was alright, it had nice explosions and unoriginal action scenes to fill your action DVD library. I recommend it only to action fans.
The Master Touch [10-Movie Set] (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure "The Master Touch" is an okay caper flick, nothing too amazing except for the unexpected car chase that was very good. Other than the chase scene, Kirk Douglas is all right; the caper itself was same old, same old.
Heroic Duo (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime "Herioc Duo" is a Benny Chan actioner. It's a fun movie that tries to play smart, but if you don't get turned off by the silly wit you'll have a nice time with this venture. Purely just a fun movie with some nice chase scenes.
Grand Slam [2-Movie Set] (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime "Grand Slam" is a caper movie that really doesn't know what it wants to be. Sometimes it wants to be a serious gritty caper, and other times it wants to be a melodramatic flick with some light comedy. I am a sucker for caper movies from "Topkapi", "Once A Thief", to "The Red Circle". This movie unfortunely does not go on my caper list. "Grand Slam" is an all right movie, it has its moments--the heist scene was fun and the planning of the it was good--but it's nothing really to get a excited about.
Bang-Rajan: The Legend Of The Village Warriors [Australia SE 2-Disc Set] (product link) Action/Adventure / War "Bang Rajan: The Legend of The Village Warriors" tried to look epic but didn't succeed. What I did like in the movie were the brutal battle scenes, but during those scenes there were too many special effects--which the film could use little of. The cover of the box says Oliver Stone loves this movie; I wish I could see what he sees in it.
Triangle [2007] (product link) Mystery / Action/Adventure "Triangle" [is] a gritty crime thriller, but it just seemed to go nowhere. I was looking forward to the film because it was done by three different Hong Kong filmmakers--Tsui Hark does the first half, the second half is Ringo Lam, and the third goes to Johnnie To.
"Triangle" could have been something amazing; sadly the film is a let-down. It has a nice start about three desperate people who need money for different reasons, then leads to a weird thriller middle and then explodes into a capture-the-flag-style ending. I am giving the movie 2 and half stars for the beginning and the ending--Ringo Lam could have done much more with the middle. The capture-the-flag-style ending is worth watching again--though nothing amazing in this picture by three talented Hong Kong action filmmakers.

I only enjoyed the Johnnie To segment. The others we're all right. Though this film is only for the fans of the directors.
tragic really is what this movie is all about. The director are amazing, but in this sloppy story they mostly just fail. The movie itself was an all right venture, but it's better off for the fans to just watch there other work then going into this film
Dragon Tiger Gate (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Dragon Tiger Gate" is based on a popular comic book, and the movie shows that with colorful images and cinematography that reminded me of Joel Shumacher's "Batman" films.
I admit, while watching this flick it wasn't all that, but the more I watched it the more it was just plain fun. "Dragon Tiger Gate" is a great guilty pleasure--it is horribly acted and the martial arts are not all that great, but it was fun. It's one of those flicks where you don't have to think about anything and just watch it for its cheesiness. The last action scene reminded me of a "Power Rangers" or "VR Troopers" kind of fight.
"Dragon Tiger Gate" is probably for fans of the comic--and by watching this it didn't turn me into a fan either. It's a fun, cheesy movie. I am giving it three stars. It's a great guilty pleasure for enjoying this trash.
