Public Enemy Returns (product link) Drama / Crime A great movie. I had not seen the original, but it made no difference. Intense story. Excellent acting. I was into it from the get go to the end.
Latitude Zero [1969] (product link) Science Fiction / Action/Adventure An incredible hybrid. How can you not like a Japanese movie with Cesar Romero in it? Bad special effects, but it is old. Incredible costumes. Dialog is diabolical. Sets are so nice and cheesy. Dig in.
Finishing The Game (product link) Comedy / Martial Arts What a funny premise, and the movie is very entertaining. Even if you are not a Bruce Lee fan you could appreciate it.
Kitaro 2: Sennen Noroi (product link) Fantasy / Action/Adventure A great follow up to "Gegege No Kitaro 1". It is a beautiful childlike fantasy (but not for really little kids) that has lovable Yokai, excellent CGI, funny characters, suspense, and a sense of respect for "the other". In a world of serious competition over perfect bodies and faces, and dwindling resources, the Yokai are accepting of each other's unique looks and gifts, fun loving, and compassionate. They are our "better halves".
Zatoichi: The Television Series Collection 2 [6-Disc Set] (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Martial Arts Continuing from the first set. Great stories and acting. One directed by Katsu is surreal and over the top soapy. Loved it.
Zatoichi: The Television Series Collection 1 [6-Disc Set] (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Martial Arts The TV show is a must if you like the movies. You don't have to invest as much time, as the show is around 50 minutes and yet very satisfying.
Zebraman (product link) Comedy / Action/Adventure So quirky, so good. If you love "Ultraman", etc. and can stand seeing a kindly send-up of the genre, go for it. It is very funny, but the characters are real people, so it has a lot of depth.
The Sister Street Fighter Collection [4-Disc Set] (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts It is so great to see these movies in such good shape and in Japanese with good subtitles. Go Girl!
Fight And Love With A Terracotta Warrior (product link) Fantasy / Comedy Wow. This movie is so wonderful, with many levels of storytelling and flawless acting, sets and photography. This is one I would like to see given the royal treatment in terms of its DVD transfer. I am just glad to have gotten to see it at long last.
Zatoichi: The Television Series Vol. 1 [2-Disc Set] (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Martial Arts I can always watch a Zatoichi show. It slows me down and appeals to the emotions. Katsu is a genius.
Zatoichi: The Television Series Vol. 6 (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Martial Arts All the TV Zatoichi are excellent. Like little movies. There is one in this group directed by Katsu that is very surreal and not like any of the others.
Toshiro Mifune: The Ultimate Collection [5-Disc Set] (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts What an excellent collection. What a buy! I cannot choose my favorite, but possibly the ultimate tragedy, "Samurai Assassin". I know that the others could be favorites, too.
Gojoe: Spirit War Chronicle (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Can't get enough of this film. Gorgeous, humanistic, political, supernatural. Fantastic acting. Over the top and satisfying. Wow!
Baian The Assassin Collector's Box [4-Disc Set] (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Action/Adventure I love Japanese TV. This has great stories, characters and even some romance. Who could ask for anything more than assassins, acupuncture, home cooked meals, and double crosses? Excellent TV viewing.
Heat Wave [1991] (product link) Drama / Action/Adventure Great movie. If you like Yakuza, lady gamblers and revenge this will be to your liking. Remember this is not a recent movie, so don't expect CGI effects. Lots of action, and soap opera story.
Shinobi No Mono 4: Siege (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A great entry in the series. A bit taxing in terms of keeping track of who's who and the historical perspective. Otherwise just great.
Ong-Bak 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Awfully "grimy" in its cinematography, but the fights are so awesome that it is worth watching more than once. I don't need more plot, just less dirt.
Monster X Strikes Back: Attack The G8 Summit! (product link) Science Fiction / Action/Adventure I like Kawasaki's movies, and this one reminded me most of "The World Sinks Except Japan" in its slapstick parodies of the world's leaders at the G8. However the best part of the film is the parody of Japanese monster movies, of which I am a fan. I especially love how the monster is instantly named.
A must-see if you love all the old Godzilla movies or the Ultraman series. Beat Takeshi's part is just a hoot. I give it a 4 because I could have used more monster flick and less of the political satire.
Warriors Of Heaven And Earth (product link) Drama / War One of those big productions that worked for me. Enough complexity of plot and character to raise it above just being a spectacle.
The Secret Rivals / The Secret Rivals 2 [2-Pack] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure These are classics. The kicks are high enough to take down a bird in flight. Don't miss these.
McDull, Prince De La Bun (product link) Animation / Drama I love the little piggie. His fantasy story is just so dear. Lovely animation. Brings a laugh and a tear.
Kaidan (product link) Horror / Romance Good solid ghost stories. I especially loved the one with the snow setting, so surreal. Not that any of them is realistic. A classic.
Baian The Assassin Vol. 1 (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Action/Adventure Liked it so much I bought the entire series. It's a bit nihilistic, but for a TV show it has a lot of depth.
Fried Dragon Fish (product link) TV Shows/Movies / Drama I only wish this film had been fleshed out a bit more. However, that said, I found it fascinating. Great acting, especially by the fish who gave their lives for the production.
Mapado (product link) Comedy / Action/Adventure One of those feel good movies that is well made. The older women in the film are not stereotypes, and the humor is not as heavy-handed as expected. It is funny, and there are some violent moments as well. Engrossing and touching at times.
Hinokio (product link) Science Fiction / Drama Better than I expected, though falls into soap opera in the relationship between father and son. However Jun is really the standout character and there is lots of depth, and some really lovely scenes where she is involved. Tying reality to fantasy for kids this age is perfect and also underscores the difficulty in dealing with some very harsh situations for the kids. The robot is not too cute and very believable and well integrated into the human characters.
Story Of The Detective (product link) Mystery / Romance This is a good detective-sorta' romance with excellent acting. As in any movie like this, there are some tender moments, funny situations, sex and bloodshed. The leads are very, very good.
Domain Of Murder (product link) Animation / Mystery Nice, very nice. Slice of ordinary, soap-opera type detective yarn. The animation style is beautiful, with so many touches of daily life objects and scenes. Highly recommended.
Juvenile (product link) Science Fiction / Action/Adventure A fun and well-made ET type of movie. Gives the viewer more than expected. Great for all ages. A little sleeper that should have been released in the US.
Alfred Hitchcock: Legends Of Hollywood [12-Movie Set] (product link) Thriller / Crime I rated this highly for the number of excellent movies and scope. One of the best is "The Lodger" with movie idol Ivor Novello; and "The Lady Vanishes" a comedic, suspenseful jewel. Worth the price for these two alone.
Kazuo Umezz's Horror Theater Collection [3-Disc Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller I bought this for my nephew who loves Japanese horror, and he said it was pretty good, but not the best.
A Stranger Of Mine (product link) Comedy / Romance Great acting. Fine, strange story. One I can watch more than once. Hard to put a finger on its appeal.
