Bio: I have been collecting Kung Fu films for over 25 years and consider myself a fanatic in the genre. I was pleased to find this site to add to my already ridiculus collection. Alot of the titles on the site I already have but on vhs, don't laugh. The titles I am unfamilar with are the ones I am purchasing and any specific favorites that I already own I will purchase on DVD. If you see my reviews on any specific titles 5 stars you may want to check them out.
YOU ARE HERE:INTERACT HOME / KUNG FU CLASSIC VIEWER'S PROFILE
Not a bad indie effort. Kind of a shame that nobody really knows the name of the main actor in this movie. Lots of solid action throughout.
A young man is entrusted with the golden seal but is almost killed by the Chings. A family nurses him back to health but then they fall victim to the bad guys and he is off to Shaolin temple to learn kung fu and one day take revenge.
The love story angle is a bit weak (really not even needed) and the bits with the drunk/crazy monk could have been developed alot better. However, it's a solid movie all around. I'm real curious if the editing of this movie was intentional as the beginning has a replaced title card then jumps right into the credit sequence where they name off production people (no cast members). Then at the end it plays what appears to be the credit sequence that should have been done in the beginning, and then we get a THE END. Either way it's a bit strange.
You have unusual taste in kung fu like me. It's a compliment the main evil charcter in this one is the same guy in Shaolin Vs Lama which he was an ultimate bad guy but your right I agree with the stars.
This is quite simply the greatest Gordon Liu movie ever made, and compelling arguments can be made that it is the greatest old-school kung fu film of all time.
While the story and plot may not be as deep or complicated as those found in movies by directors such as Chor Yuan, it serves as the perfect framework for some of the greatest fight scenes ever put on film. The array of weapons used is impressive, and the choreography is absolutely flawless; the hand-to-hand scenes are also quite incredible, including an amusing scene where our hero learns drunken kung fu.
As with most Shaw films of this period, particularly by this director, there is some comedy. But unlike most other old-school films that contain comedy, the jokes and gags in this movie are actually funny instead of just being annoying and tedious, and this manages to give the movie a light-hearted tone throughout most of its running-time.
This movie is a definite must-have in any old-school film collection. It is impossible to use too many superlatives when describing its greatness. Absolutely brilliant.
I like this film very much, but not only is it not the single greatest old-school kung fu film of all time, there are several other Gordon Liu films of similar quality.
The Prodigal Son (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Definitely a genre classic, "Prodigal Son" is loaded with a superb and skilled cast, excellent choreography and a story that covers more ground than just the usual "you killed my teacher!" plot line. This one begs for multiple viewings.

Some of the best action choreography to be found. This is a great film.
Decent movie. I would actually rate this at 3.75. Should have been retitled to "Eighteen Jade Lohans" (not to be confused with Lindsay). The mechanized statue with multiple arms looked ridiculously camp. It looks like something that came off of a 1960s horror film/sci-fi set. Good cast list, although I'm not sure who the main lead is (can anybody verify?).
Not to go too much into the plot, but it involves a good guy that knows the deadly Lohan Palm and travels with Polly Kuan to initially find the 18 Jade Lohans as well as track down Chang Yi's "killer". The plot is all right for the most part, and we even have some cameos from Lo Lieh, Ko Fei, and Lung Fei. In the end we find out the "killer", the reasoning behind the string of events leading up to this confrontation, and then have a very weak climax.
Polly Kuan out of the blue gets some epiphany on how to beat her opponent. That was done really dumb and showed a real lack of development on the director's part. Following this epiphany, the villain is defeated in what seems like less than a minute.
As mentioned, some night scenes were hard to view, but it didn't detract too much from the movie. I think the mystery element of this movie was better than the action. Granted you can probably figure out the main culprit halfway in. The action comes secondary to me. I am not one of those viewers who has to have nonstop brainless action with a paper thin plot to have some kind of enjoyment. So in short, I would easily say this is a rental but don't know if I would be watching this over and over again.

I'm undecided whether to go with your star rating or lower, but agree completely with the text of the review.
I know a whole lot of people will disagree, but this film is vastly overrated, to say the least. If you are truly interested in this story, purchase the Lo Lieh-directed "Clan of the White Lotus" instead; that particular film is vastly superior in every way.
Aside from the absolutely remarkable fight scene involving Gordon Liu near the very beginning of "Executioners from Shaolin", there is little else to recommend in this boring film. Even its greatest asset, Lo Lieh, is given scant few minutes of screen time.
The flaws in this film are numerous. The film is so dominated by scenes of Chen Kuan-Tai's extremely mundane domestic life it almost makes the revenge scenario against Pei Mei feel like an afterthought. What little fight action that does occur is slow and uninspired. Moreover, Chen Kuan-tai is never even remotely Lo Lieh's match, even after 17 years of training. The sheer one-sidedness of the fights makes them more tedious than exciting; I won't even go into the absurdity of Pei Mei's kung fu style. And to make matters worse, the training sequences that occur prior to the Hong Xiguan-Pei Mei showdowns are boring, consisting mostly of Chen Kuan-tai banging away on an immobile bronze dummy, when he isn't busy ripping the bark off trees.
But far and away the biggest flaw of the whole movie is the character of Hong Wending, played by the perpetually annoying Young Wang Yu. Regardless of the film, whenever Liu Chia-liang used Young Wang Yu as his comedy relief, it always produced the same annoying-as-hell slapstick result, and this film is no exception. The fact he is portrayed as an exremely effiminate, almost girlish, buffoon with a pronounced lack of kung fu skill does not help matters. That he is able to beat Lo Lieh at the end, after his father had failed twice at the same task even after two decades of training, is an insult to the intelligence of the viewer.
This movie is utterly disappointing and completely forgettable.
By the time Hung Wending faces Pai Mei he is a master of the Hung Kuen: That's the whole point of the film - Tiger and Crane combined defeating the Bakme style.
Marco Polo (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Richard Harrison comes across as slightly confused as the pointless title character Marco Polo. This is a good flick, packed with excellent fighting and training sequences (plus a rare turn as a villain for Gordon Liu), but the inclusion of a white guy seems to be just a gimmick. The role of Marco Polo could easily have been made a generic Mongol general without affecting the story at all, since he just stands around and watches everyone else fighting for the whole movie.

I agree Denizen but him standing in the way so to speak still has no effect on the outcome of the classic gem still gets 5 stars from me.
Kung fu with an engaging plot, drama and characters--a miracle! As much as I love kung fu films (classic kung fu especially), I've come to expect a certain amount of dullness or flab inbetween the training and fighting scenes. This movie is all muscle. There is plenty of drama in this movie, but it is engaging and renders the action, when it occurs, more poignant. Emotional context is given to most of the fights. It's easy to identify with and care about the protagonist (played to perfection by Lo Lieh). He is strong, intelligent and has a big heart. At the beginning of the movie, he is not the strongest student or the most courageous, but because of his humility and desire, he masters the iron fist technique and becomes a force to be reckoned with
At the risk of being overly critical, I am tempted to withold half a star because the choreography isn't among the best I've seen (as in "Drunken Master" 1 or 2, or in "Mad Monkey Kung Fu", or "Prodigal Son") and leaves something to be desired. That said, I still find myself engaged in every fight and sometimes cringing at the nasty blows people receive. The choreography reminds me of a Jimmy Wang Yu movie, being more chop-socky. This style is appropriate given that the iron palm technique, glorified in this movie, is delivered in simplicity as a single, straight thrusting blow.

One of my All-Time favorites! Not the best choreography, but a great story, with great acting by Lo Lieh!
This is Lo Lieh my favorite bad guy playing a good guy. So many good things about this film training sequence traitor getting his EYE's plucked out. HaHa no but really a good film defintley a must have in any library.
The choreography and Lo Lieh's martial arts skills are disappointing, but this is an important and enjoyable milestone in the development of martial arts cinema.
This film and "Masked Avengers" rank as the Venoms' greatest masterpieces in my opinion, and unlike "Masked Avengers", all the Venoms appear here, including the "honorary 6th Venom", Wang Li.
This movie has everything: a multitude of weapons utilized in brilliantly choreographed scenes, great hand-to-hand combat, breathtaking acrobatics; all the physical qualities one associates with the Venoms are here.
And while the plot does evolve into one of revenge, it has much more meat to it than the standard "you killed my teacher, now I'm going to kill you" fare.
Lu Feng is at his sleazy, scheming best as the villian in this film, and he has the kung fu skills to back up his evil machinations. And unlike most Venoms films, all of them play major roles, including Sun Chien who is often inexplicably in the background in many Venoms films. His increased presence makes for some great kicking action. And though there is quite a bit of bloody violence, as usual with the Venoms, there are also some funny, lighthearted comedic moments that help to flesh out the characters and make them more than just two-dimensional killing machines.
This film is an absolute must-have for all old-school fans; it is one of the best ever. Highly recommended.

yea i loved this film, one of my favorite venom films =D
I would'nt rate this one at five stars either, but it was entertaining. I also felt that something was lacking, the Venom action was great but the plot was a little disappointing.
Yes it is a VENOMS film but next to SHAOLIN DAREDEVILS this is one film I felt missed the mark. Ku Feng plays a villian who challenges other fighters by tricking them to fight. Lo mang is killed by Kuo Cho due to a friendly duel. By a pole fixed by Kuo.
Disciples Of The 36th Chamber (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Wonderful performance by Hsiao Hou. You gotta see him here. Beautiful choreography by Liu Chia-Liang. Exceptional fights. A good mix of comedy and martial arts. The last 20 minutes are fantastic. Gordon Liu reprises his role of the 36th Chamber of Shaolin. He has a supporting role here but gives a brilliant performance. I only wish they would have add an extra 10 minutes of action! If you love martial arts movies, you must add this one to your collection. A true classic.
Chinese Super Ninja (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of the all-time greatest SB movies. A must-have for any self-respecting kung fu fan. Highly recommended.

Wuxia fan I agree my all time favorite but ,this is response to Stroke Of Death. I was referring to Chen Kwan Tai's IRON MONKEY. You might want to research your films before you submit your opinion!
Snake In The Monkey's Shadow (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Classic train/revenge/kill story. Overall an entertaining martial arts movie with a good cast (no prominent star except maybe Wilson Tong). Prominent styles are Monkey and Snake and well performed. Good choreography. Plenty of action. Low budget movie but definitely worth watching.

I agree that monkey and snake style are performed very well, but don't forget the drunken style which is displayed quite nicely by Cheung and Hau Chiu Sing! There's something about when Wilson Tong shows up in a movie that makes that movie seem better.
The Prodigal Son (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I challenge anyone to name an old-school film with more astounding fight choreography than "The Prodigal Son". The scene between Lam Ching-Ying and Frankie Chan is probably the greatest fight scene ever put on film.
This is easily one of the all-time greats, and may be the best ever. This is truly a film deserved of the title "must-own". Absolutely brilliant.

I like this as much as you do, but you are mistaken that it stands alone above everything else. You are very particular about superlatives, so I will follow suit.
The Heroes [Tai Seng] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Not a bad indie effort. Basic premise is Ti Lung goes undercover to kill Chan Wai Man. Unfortunately, his brothers from Shaolin have to suffer the price in getting his mission accomplished. I thought it was rather comical that Chan Wai Man finally understood Ti Lung was up to something near the end when he was secretly training his brothers to fight against the Chings when he was torturing them.
I liked the film for the most part, but it wasn't anything that made me want to hit the rewind button. A worthy rental.

Agreed, not Ti Lung's best but a very worthy effort.
Ninjas And Dragons (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I would actually give this more of a 2.75 rating. There's a fair amount of action, which is decent. However, 3 gripes from me: 1) The old "lady" is actually a dude but dubbed in a woman's voice. 2) Someone tell me the old lady's cohort who was supposed to be a chick is actually a dude? Either way that's one ugly ass chick! 3) The midget/kid: annoying ass voice. I could not stand it. I wanted him to be thrown off a cliff with weights attached to its ankles.
The story is just a freakin' mess. A ninja is in China on a quest to find another ninja who betrayed his clan. Long story short, ninja hooks up with the good guys to get rid of the general, the old "lady", her companion, and the midget/kid. You can pretty much figure out the mystery early on, and when it's finally "revealed" at the end, it's done pretty much half-assed. I don't recommend this title.

Ol Skee you are being kind I would not recomend this title to anyone everything use stated is true. A ninja in china plot was as mixed up as a jigsaw puzzle. 0 stars!
Human Lanterns (product link) Horror / Thriller A decent "horror"/martial arts flick. Solid performances by Lau Wing, Chen Kuan Tai, and Lo Lieh. Lo Lieh steals the show as the evil lantern maker. Even Lo Meng has a cameo as an assassin. Good direction by Sun Chung.

Dirty Ho (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of the best kung fu movies made, hands down. Ill shapes and some nice legwork too. Pretty dope story, but a rather abrupt ending.

One of the few LKL movies I really don't like! But can't quite explain why!
I agree Dirty Ho is definetly classic material my favorite scene is when Wang Lung Wei is fighting Gordon while drinking wine and having a conversation. WOW. This title should defintely be in everyone's library.
Shaolin Daredevils (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Definitely worth watching, especially if you are a Venoms fan (I am). But it is not their best action/fight movie. Also, there's not enough action in this movie, which Venoms fans are not used to. If you never saw a Venoms movie, don't start with this one. Go with their classic "Five Venoms" first.

Once again gentlemen I agree action was lacking almost more of a drama flick and someone said lets hire the Venoms for this one. The worst venoms film in my opinion. Well I take that back but it is bad.
Return Of The 5 Deadly Venoms (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This was an excellent movie. Other than FLAG OF IRON and 5 DEADLY VENOMS, starring the Venoms, this was by far one of their best movies. The story was nice as well as the fight scenes. There was plenty of action and the the stars made it work. This is a movie that should be in your collection.

Of course the VENOMS delivered n this 1 Chen Kun Thai especially. My favorite quote in the movie "Fine I don't mind from now on your def 2". 5 star classic
Stranger From Shaolin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Stranger From Shaolin" is a nice old school kung fu movie chronicling the adventures of Yim Wing Chun, as portrayed by the lovely Wong Hang-Sau. Shaw Brothers fans should recognize her as David Chiang's young wife in the classic "Shaolin Mantis".
Here we watch Wong Hang-Sau study kung fu at Shaolin Temple disguised as a young man, in order to avenge her father's death at the hands of the Manchus.
There are some good fight sequences and training sequences as we watch Wong hang-Sau create the Wing Chun fighting style. A later version of Yim Wing Chun is also portrayed by Michelle Yeoh in a great Yuen Woo Ping feature appropriately titled "Wing Chun". Is this film as good? No. It is, however, a good old school feature for lovers of seventies classic kung fu movies!

Yes I second what william said the introduction was also a treat to watch.
Secret Rivals 3 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure John Liu is back once again in this surprisingly good third installment of the "Secret Rivals" movies, this time teaming with Alexander Lo Rei. There are some truly funny comedic touches in this, but what knocks this movie down a bit from the other two is the absence of a truly menacing villain (Hwang Jang Lee stole the show in the first two). Robert Tai is more than capable as the main villain, he just doesn't show up to fight until the very end. I recommend this movie on its own merits--it is a slight step down from the other two but still worth watching.

The Twelve Gold Medallions (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Very entertaining Shaw classic. Great performance by Yueh Hua. Plenty of good action and bloodshed. The two old masters are really fun to watch and fight each other at the end. The only downer is that some wirework is just over the board. But being a Shaw movie, not totally unusual. Great sets and sceneries. Some fight scenes could have been filmed less close. Great old school movie!

The Young Vagabond (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A good and funny film with a great cast: Gordon Liu, Wang Yue, Jason Pai-Piao, Johnny Wang Lung-Wei, and Ku Feng. The film tells the story of Beggar Su. Nice action. The film is worth the money. Buy it!

Don't think so he resorts to biteing what happend to old school martial arts if it was't for wang lung wei this would be a flop.
Shaolin Daredevils (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A middling Venoms film (in my opinion at least). Lots of acrobatics, which was cool, but the film just seemed half-baked compared to some of the other Venoms films. I don't have anything brutal to say about it, it's just okay.
