Much has been said about this tribute to the late great Alexander Fu Sheng, but until you see the film I don't think you can appreciate what a great film this is. Okay, so it is slightly marred by the melodramatics but is still a great film with an outstanding cast. Gordon Liu does a fanatastic job as a somewhat reluctant monk whilst giving probably his greatest physical performance, as does Ko Fai as the abbot--especially when, towards the end of the film, they engage in what is arguably one of the best fights ever shot. The finale is (as always) tooth-shatteringly good, but I wish it were slightly longer, as I feel it is overshadowed by the Ko Fai fight; but that is often the case with Hong Kong cinema. Lau Kar Leung definitely gave the film a much more sober and sombre tone than one would expect from a film of this era, but still delivers in creating a surprisingly complete (given the film's troubled production with the death of Fu Sheng midway) package.

I couldn't agree more. Everything you write is accurate, including the remark about the melodramatics.
When I first heard about SPL (Killzone) it was described to me as "Infernal Affairs meets Ong Bak" although this does the film a great disservice. Ong Bak was and still is a classic martial arts movie but Infernal Affairs is criminally overrated. For many fans the cast alone should ignite a great deal of interest.... the film does not disappoint. SPL strikes a good balance between drama and action whilst never becoming too sentimental or cliched. In fact I feel that this is the film New Police Story should have been, as SPL has the kind of dark tone that particular film should have taken rather than the half hearted approach the film took. In summary SPL is well worth seeing and it certainly worthy of wider appeal in the form of a cinematic release. If the truly dreadful Curse Of The Golden Flower or Hero are given a wide release then it is a great shame that a GENUINELY good film such as this is denied an international release as, unlike the aforementioned films, it could cultivate a large international audience.
