"The Good, The Bad, The Weird" is hands down one of my favorite films of 2008. From the very time it was announced, this project earned my "most anticipated movie of the year" spot. Oh sure, I've seen other Asian directors take a shot at the western genre, but nothing really satisfied me other than "Tears Of The Black Tiger". "Sukiyaki Western Django" was a complete bore in my opinion. Anyhow, considering I had previously viewed "A Bittersweet Life" and adored it, I had full confidence the director could pull off something wonderful, especially with the cast that signed on (more on that later).
Anyhow, the film has many references to Euro-westerns, specifically, "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly", but still it manages to keep things fresh during its entire duration--and this film is pretty lengthy. Oh and the surprise ending really, er, surprised me? Ha ha.
The cast? One word: phenomenal. You literally have some of the GREATEST Korean male actors involved, and each star works their character brilliantly. Song Kang-Ho ("Memories Of Murder", "JSA") flat out levels any project he is attached to. I don't know if anyone else agrees, and I don't mean to swing off this dude's nuts, but he is seriously one of the greatest performers alive.
The Great Silence (product link) Western / Drama Easily one of the darkest westerns I've ever seen, with grim atmospheres, bloodying violence, the coldness of mother nature's "snow hill" deep in the mountains, and merciless bounty hunters that will haunt you in your nightmares after you see this film. Sergio Corbucci's amazing directorial duties shine so triumphantly in the art of filmmaking here. His films always leave imprints in my mind. He was one of a kind, and so are his films, so check them out!
Peace Hotel (product link) Action/Adventure / Drama Wow, I remember this one from back when I was in high school, and now I got it for a great deal thanks to HKFlix.com. GOOD STUFF, from producer John Woo!

You know, now that I think about it, this film pre-dates "Asian Westerns" that would follow years later: like Tears of the Black Tiger, The Good, The Bad, The Weird, and Sukiyaki Western Django. I'm still waiting for Too Many Ways To Be #1 to his DVD!!
The Super Inframan (product link) Science Fiction / Action/Adventure It's one of Shaw Brothers' best for its time. I recommend it to all sentai lovers like myself.

Do you have to be a sentai-lover to appreciate it?
Year Of The Dragon (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure This is the film that launched Mickey Rourke's career. It has a good plot and is very well acted. Quite long but it never fails to keep your attention.

Totally agree! I'm still surprised how many people haven't seen it.
Under Siege (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts "Under Siege" is basically "Die Hard" on a boat--a Steven Seagal classic that still holds up some of its merit.
The overall acting is pretty good. Actors like Tommy Lee Jones are, of course, great. Andrew Davis’s direction was pretty good. The action was slightly disappointing. Maybe it was just because there seemed to be a lack of action sequences. Seagal had a good knife fight, and there were a few good shootouts. The knife fight at the end was good, but was shot and cut too oddly.
Not Seagal's best, but still enjoyable.

I'm enjoying your capsule Seagal reviews dude... keep it up!
The Sword Of Swords (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Great dramatic plot, exciting swordfights, and gallons of blood! This is a fantastic movie!
The Hills Have Eyes [1977] (product link) Horror / Thriller Amazing how well this flick has stood the test of time. The levels of mind shattering tension are right off the scale. The recent remake might have better effects/gore, but it cannot hold a candle to the incredible atmosphere of the original.

Yeah, I saw this a year ago for the first time. Pretty brutal. Great movie.
Returner (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction Fairly derivative but stylish action flick. Kinda like "The Matrix", "Alien", "Transformers", and "Max Payne" all thrown together in a blender. Bonus points for the blonde villain who is so crazy that it's great fun.

Totally agree. This is a great example of a totally unoriginal, but sweet, action flick!
Hard Boiled (product link) Action/Adventure / Bullet Ballet A must-have! I bought this DVD before it came out in America! Probably one of the best Chow Yun-Fat movies ever made! Goes along with the X-Box 360 video game as well!

the last person who said this is the most overrated film in HK is just trying to get a rise out of people, this is one of John Woo's best
This movie was for many was the introduction to John Woo movies and we owe it a big debt! An excellent movie with fantastic stunts, a great story and compelling iconic characters..how many movies have a 20 min finale?
This film is an all-time great and not at all over-rated. I'm pretty sure "City On Fire" is more than one person because they write multiple contradictory reviews for the titles they review. Many of them are far from experts.
