The One-Armed Swordsman Trilogy [3-Movie Box] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I would highly recommend the One-Armed Swordsman trilogy to anyone who likes Shaw Brothers flicks. I watched these three classics back to back and not once was I bored. I thought the acting from Jimmy Wang Yu and Lisa Chiao Chiao in the first two movies was excellent; and also the action was really good, with loads of great bloody fight scenes. The third movie, "New One Armed Swordsman", is equally as good as its two predecessors, starring David Chiang as the one-armed swordsman and Ti Lung as his good pal. Both give great performances. I also think Ku Feng played a great part as the villain. Like the first two movies, the acting is good, with loads of great swordplay. I think Chang Cheh made three cracking movies here, and I couldn't fault them in any way. Highly recommended.

Some of Jimmys best work and all three of these movies are a must have in your collection.
I'm not a big fan of Jimmy Wang Yu, but he is extremely good in the first two films. I am basically antagonistic toward David Chiang, but he's pretty good in the third. The central concept was obviously one that engaged Chang Cheh fully.
The Descent (product link) Horror / Thriller A true gem of a movie, its got everything you would want to make it a great horror movie. Great prodcution vaules and some nice camera work since its mostly filmed inside a cave. With it being filmed in a cave it makes the movie even more frantic and good tension. For it being an all women the acting is pretty good and they spend a good amount of time on all the characters in the movie.
Movie does start off alittle bit slow but it helps build the characters up and the second half of film makes up for the slow start.
Highly recommand this movie!!! Get it as soon as you can.
i totally agree with you i really enjoyed this great british horror film and i would highly recommend anyone to check this film out.we brits do make good films from time 2 time.
If you read the synopsis that's posted here with the product details, you'll get a pretty accurate description of what's in store. What you may not realize, however, is just how different this is from most Jackie Chan films.
This is Jackie in his "grown up" serious actor showcase. There are no hijinks, no mugging for the camera and, for the most part, no martial arts (by anyone). This is a mobster crime drama. And a pretty good one, too. The storyline is engaging, if not altogether original, and the acting in general is solid. Daniel Wu, in particular, does a great job as Jackie's lifelong friend. He makes an effortless transformation from sweet and naiive to crazy and vicious without skipping a beat. Fan Bing-Bing is also ridiculously beautiful as Jackie's (eventual) girlfriend, if you're wondering about the eye-candy quotient (though Fan can certainly act, too).
All-in-all, this is a good dramatic flick. There are heart-touching moments and scenes of incredible violence. I was just a little disappointed by the almost total lack of martial arts.

I really liked this movie too. I was also a little disappointed with the lack of martial arts, but I don't think it would have worked with the rest of the movie.
Six Assassins (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Absolutely entertaining. An evil warlord, or the Emperor's brother, does all types of cruel acts--killing people, taking land--and the hero he kills has some serious fighters in his clan that are not going to accept it. Our hero's kung fu is top notch, but so is the villain's. Don't want to spoil it for you, but it's a very good film. A must-have.

More story driven, than an action movie per se, but this is a top notch classic martial arts film.
A young woman named Ah Bu (Shu Qi) has a boyfriend (Ritchie Ren) but when she finds a bottle with a love message inside from a man named Albert she decides fate is guiding her. She flies to Hong Kong and goes to the address but discovers the writer of the note is gay and so was his boyfriend. She doesn't understand why she was given such an idea to come here. Albert eventually says she can stay there briefly. In the mean time her boyfriend follows her after finding the note from Albert. He arrives at Albert's door enraged and inebriated. Fortunately he passes out before he can do much harm. Ah Bu falls in love with C.N. but he does not immediately feel the same.
The plot, such as it is that a wealthy businessman becomes interested in a young woman who kept him from being lost at sea by Emil Chau (bad guy?) He gets Brad Allen, an American Martial Arts champion to fight C.N. with the intention of humiliating C.N. who hasn't been in the gym much and not in fighting form. What takes place next is one the most unrealistic fights I have seen in a Jackie Chan movie. Things are polite. Brad comes prepared for everything and different weight gloves. And tunes. When Jackie falls down and just stays there Brad leaves and Emil is sad rather than gloating. Emil does not work as a bad guy. Jackie wants a rematch with Allen and starts to work out again, often with the help of Ah Bu.
Of course there needs to be another fight between Jackie and Brad. It's difficult to see many shots of Jackie because he is wearing all white and every thing in the room is white too. Rather blinding. I won't spoil the outcome of the fight nor the repercussions so I'll shift to this movie apparently has had all the specials removed.
The movie itself is 120 minutes and is not a great film. Jackie seemed to be having a lot of fun when talking during interviews. He had one of his best friends act as the most useless bad guy along with a stunt team member to have pretend fights with. The only thing I have heard about this movie that is so special is that Jackie finally has a romantic kiss. Well the kiss is in the special features so no one will see it now anyway, and Jackie has kissed women before in movies like "Red Bronx" ("Rumble In The Bronx"). Jackie seemed very happy during the interview segment but this reviewer did not share in his elation. This movie did not deliver as advertised. Pretty fluff and everyone's happy does not necessarily a good movie make.
I'm a JC fan and I like Shu Qi, however this movie was a big let down. I have watched it once and only once, I think you're generous with the 2 and a half stars, more like 1 and a half!
This and the sequel are both excellent movies. A little hard to follow at times because there is so much going on, but well worth your time I highly recommend too.
Dobermann (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime Fast-paced, high octane gangster movie. While it does seem to bog down about an hour into the movie once they reach the club, it manages to rally in the last reel with enough gunshots, explosions, and car chases to satisfy. It has a weird Bugs Bunny-gone-bad feel about it, very cartoonish but also rather violent at the same time. Not too violent, not over-the-top, "let's wade through blood and guts" "Ichi" feel to it. Tcheky Karyo truly steals this movie as the most psychotic of all psychotic policeman. Throw in a few really hilarious off colour jokes and you have a really good too-cool to be a gangster movie.
Shinobi (product link) Action/Adventure / Fantasy This has got to be the worst ninja movie ever. I don't understand why people rated it so high. Sure, I watched the manga and anime version, it's great, but the live action version sucks because they don't have the budget to make the special effects look real, and the actors look so fake. I can't believe how dumb this movie is. As I said, if you have no brain and still believe in fantasy and fairy tales, then this movie suits you perfectly. But if you are a hardcore kung fu action fan like me, stay away from it at all costs. I think that's why we're here in the first place!

I neither agree/disagree with your review but you watched a Japanese "ninja" movie for hardcore kung fu action? Lolz
In fact NO WAY, if you have no brain then you wouldn't notice the great storyline that this movie offers. Man, this movie has everything. Each to their own. But shit, you missed a magic movie here.
I'm not sure if I would call this a ninja movie and I could see where some hardcore kung fu fans could dislike it, but I felt this was well done and quite interesting. I couldn't help feel like I was watching a superior version of the X-Men
Shaolin Master Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure this got to be the most over rated film ever, i don't know why people rated so high, it's got very slow and boring action, slow storyline, i felt to sleep half way of the film, i reckon this is gorden liu's worst film, watch the invisible pole fighter instead!

You should give up watching & rating martial arts films
Odd Couple (product link) Martial Arts / Comedy A classic film that was considered being remade by Hong Kong studios. You get to see some of the most amazing fight scenes from our legendary martial arts actors Sammo Hung, Lau Kar Wing, and Lau Kar Yan. Trust me, this film will have you stunned by how well these guys fight. The story is typical but the characters are fun, and it's also fun to see Sammo and Lau Kar Wing play two roles. I love this film and hope that people will enjoy it as well.
Heroes Two (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Fu Sheng has never been one of my favorite actors, because his characters so often shaded into silliness, but he is very well used here. His character, Fang Shih-Yu, is initially brash and heedless, but a consummate martial artist while Chen Kuan Tai's Hung Hsi-Kuan is a stolid, dignified master of equal or better skills. Fu Sheng's character develops marvelously into a true hero, and the fight scenes are extremely well staged and performed.
Chen Kuan Tai gives his usual excellent performance, but this film rises or falls on the performance of Fu Sheng, and his performance is extremely good.

This is a great movie, although I think Chen Kuan Tai's performance is stellar one.
Five Shaolin Masters (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is an extremely entertaining account of the heroic Ming patriots from the Shaolin Temple training hard to revenge themselves on the Qing invaders. The cast is outstanding, the training sequences nearly believable, and the action remarkable. I'm not sure this is the greatest Chinese martial arts film, but it is certainly in the running.

Fantastic cast of heroes as well as villains. What's not to like?
"Death Trance" was a film made by the star and action coordinator of the wildly popular film, "Versus". It seems that Tak Sakaguchi and Yuji Shimomura tried to capitalize off the previous film's success by creating the same style of action in the same never ending forest. What we have here is another stylized film that somehow managed to have less of a sensible plot than versus that disguises itself as a period piece from an unknown time and place. Unfortunately for "Death Trance", this time the mayhem and style couldn't make up for the lazy script unlike the incredibly entertaining film, "Versus".
I do really like Tak Sakaguchi's screen presense and action sequences showing great promise when he figures out a believable story is important. The action scenes were intense and very believable since he would really hit people with his padded hands that were covered by his costume sleeves.
This film also included fun but very over the top action such as bazookas with homing missiles, zombies?, and strange pale people similar to the ones in "Seven Swords".
Still this film is fun but it comes back to questions like who are these people, what's the purpose of those girls, where did that weapon come from, etc...
Many people who like mindless violence and mayhem like I do will have a great time if they are able to put their mind on stop and "Death Trance" on play, but to people who ask questions during movies--beware

This is a pretty weird movie, but its entertainment value is at least the three stars you gave it.
I agree with everything you said, and 3 stars to me as about right. This had the potential to be as good as Versus, but in my mind falls a little short. As you said, too many holes in the story to be a great film, but it is fun to watch.
The good news: this movie has the greatest cast ever assembled in HK action movie history. And arguably some of the tightest choreo and stuntwork of the mid 80's.
The bad news: this movie is a big incoherent mess in every other way. The narrative is all over the place. The episodic nature of the story is vexing at best. And the comedy goes from sort of fun, to bad, to awful. But the worst offense has to be the rampant anachronisms. Seriously, I haven't seen it this bad since "Fantasy Mission Force".
Sammo is no dope, so this was obviously a conscious choice. Why? I have no idea, and no idea what to make of it this, really. First off all, WHERE is this supposed to take place? It was shot in Canada, Thailand, and HK but looks like some weird version of the old west.
Secondly, WHEN is this supposed to take place? There are people in cowboy gear, trenchcoats, and fedoras, classic Chinese garb, samurais, Russian soldiers...what the fuck!? Is this set in some kind of timewarp? Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton looks like American Civil War soldiers, Richard Ng looks like Sherlock Holmes, and people are driving 1930's cars and motorcycles! What in the name of Buddha's ballsack is going on here? Pick a style, a time, a place, and stick with it. This is ridiculous!
The cast is so impressive, and the action is so damn sweet, but everything else is on acid here. This was a real opportunity to make a great period spectacle, like "Project A" or "Pedicab Driver". But unless this is a time travel movie, you should stick to one period, and work your magic within that frame.
I don't know what Sammo was thinking with this misguided effort. I don't get it, nor do I like it. I'll give this pile of wasted potential a generous 2.5 stars for the cast and the action.

I agree with your assessment of this movie and Mr Rater Haters assessment of Pedicab Driver.
THANK-FREAKING-YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOSH!!!!! THANKS, THANKS, THANKS! But one thing: "Pedicab Driver" Sucked- HARD! That's just my bias opinion.
The Warriors (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure Warriors come out and plaaaaaayyy. Hell, yeah, fools, act like you know.
The essential classic gang movie. This was 1979, long before gangster rap and Jerry Springer convinced kids it was cool to bring automatic weapons to school and shoot shit up. Back then it was about the throw down. Chains, bats, knives and fists and wits were all real tough, juvenile, outlaw, bastards needed. These kids lived by a code. This adventure was as much about brotherhood as it was about survival.
One of the ultimates in sheer entertainment and adrenaline supplements. One of my all time top 20 movies. If you are not hip, get hip, 'cause "The streets are ours, suckas. It's all ours. Can you dig it?"

Its supposed to be silly thats part of its charm. There is no indication that this film was trying to be serious so just sit and enjoy the sillyness
MS10197 is probably right that this should be taken as a comedy - or something or another else than a realistic thriller, anyway - but I am convinced that it works quite well as whatever it is. "Wah-ree-urz, come out to play-ayyy!"
I think this movie is best taken as a comedy, as silly as it is. Gangs dressed as baseball clowns with a sultry radio host announcing their every move? Come on. This is just plain silly
This is a 5 star awesomely entertaining Walter Hill flick-it's a late 70's80's pic but it's timeless & the directors cut was well done a lot better then the original, I loved the comic strips that detailed the story! i agree with ur review.
Return Of Bastard Swordsman (product link) Martial Arts / Swordplay/Sword(s) I found this sequel just as entertaining and outrageous as the first film. Norman Chu is back in this Lu Chin-Ku-directed feature. Watch as he battles the invincible clan's leader, and a band of ninjas led by Chen Kuan Tai! As in the first film, there are great special effects as we see plenty of magic and wire-fu. Again like the first, this film is not for everyone. It has over the top comic action and characters. It is however fast-paced and very entertaining!

I thought this was very good as well, but not quite up to the first movie. It is a fun movie to watch.
The Shadow Boxer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Frankly, this movie started out with a lot of promise, but did not reach its full potential. The lead actor, Chen Wo Fu, who committed suicide before this film was released, really tried. Using the teachings of tai chi we watch our hero get continuously beat up, his best friend killed, his master murdered, and his girlfriend raped, before he finally fights back. With the lovely Shih Szu portraying his master's daughter, we finally get to the action, which is about the last twenty-five minutes of the film. Frankly, I felt a big let down. Not even the villainous performance of Frankie Wei could save this film from a lackluster pay-off! Lots of slow motion and average fighting.

Right again Sarge. Plus the fact that the kung fu wasn't very interesting didn't help. It's basically watching a guy get the tar beat out of him for 82 minutes.
The Iron Fisted Monk (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Complete waste of money, Sammo's worst film, they even do a soft porn in this old school kung fu film. Skip it at all cost!

Perhaps the rape scenes could have been toned down, but there was definitely a need to provide motivation for the traditional "train hard and get revenge" storyline. There is much good with this film, and I would rate it much higher.
This film has garnered lots of criticism for the story and abrupt ending. It has also gotten many thumbs up for the great action sequences by Tony Jaa and the stunt personnel involved in making this awesome feature!
This is a period film of revenge set in a turbulent time of Thailand/Siam's history. Tony Jaa watches his parents die on order from the King's mad heir, in order to secure his power. Tony escapes and is taken in and trained by a community of pirate mercenaries from childhood. When Tony comes of age he leaves the adoptive father and leader of the pirates for revenge! Along the way is plenty of action and a good plot twist leaving the viewer wanting more!
The cinematography was excellent! The stunts and action outstanding. Tony Jaa shows that he is more than just a Muay-Thai expert by using various forms and weapons! The story was straightforward and simple with a great supporting cast portraying the villains, fighters, and family! I think many overlook the acting in favor of the action. The actor portraying Cher Nung, the pirate leader, was excellent. The ending is not what you expect but sets you up for a sequel, kind of like the ending of " The Empire Strikes Back ". All in all this is a must-see film for action lovers. The stunts are fantastic!

This movie was totally awesome and I also agree about the abrupt ending. I think that some people out there are aware that Tony is capable of more than just Muay Thai. In Ong Bak he unleashed numerous Korean and Chinese kicking and acrobatic techniques.
Once one gets past the abruptness of the ending, this is a great action showcase, with better acting than I had previously seen in Thai martial arts cinema. Tony Jaa is a phenomenal fighter. As for the abrupt ending, Part 3 is coming: Hope for the best!
Set in the 1920's China this is a very entertaining movie, don't worry about plot too much just watch and enjoy!
Chin Kar Lok and his father travel to the city to find a better way of life. Chin's father wants him to have a good education but Yu Shu prefers to imagine himself in a fantasy life where he is the good guy saving damsels in distress. Don't worry about the first few scenes it gets a lot better! Enter 'better' known as Kim Won Jin! This man is at the top of the kicking world! And his Scorpion form, as he scuttles across the floor or ground is the best I have ever seen! It's truly a different kind of fighting that's for damn sure! If you haven't guessed by now Kim Won Jin steals the show. His first fight gives you an idea what this guy can do. Those who refuse to watch wire fu do not bother but you are really going to miss one hell of a good time! The laws of physics cannot be changed even by the bad guy. You can't make a movie like this without wires but it doesn't matter! It's great entertainment and not all is wire assisted. Kim Won Jin kicks like no one else and I mean No One!
Yu Shu (Chin Kar Lok) is young and has a temper. Most of his time in high school he is getting into trouble for drawing his hero comics or beaten up by the police chief's son. In a series of coincidences he befriends a lovely young girl in servitude to a nasty guy (the Scorpion's father) who sells women locally and abroad. Unfortunately that leads to his father getting beat up and Yu Shu is looking for some help. He finds a temporary refuge with a group of body builders at their school. Yu Shu is so impressed, especially by the instructor Little John he decides he must become his student. That is one of those nicknames that use the opposite. Little John is anything but little!
Yu Shu, his father and the ex-slave go to stay with an old friend, Lo (Lau Kar Leung) at his noodle shop and Yu Shu makes tentative steps at romancing . It must be remembered that Yu Shu's character is supposed to be high school age and cannot be expected to be super talented since he has never had any training other than in his imagination. Although Yu Shu attends a few lessons with Little John his real training begins as every day work for the restaurant.
Knowing his helper wishes to learn Kung Fu Sifu Lo uses everyday items and tasks to train the impatient Yu Shu.
Things grow worse when Yu Shu's friends maid is sold into a prostitution ring by her mother and Yu Shu and his friend get Little John to help them get her back. The big man versus the thin guy with legs that seem to go in 360 degrees is excellent. The gauche riches of the gangsters is shown well as the two square off and Little John breaks a number of things including a wall. At first Little John is quite the opponent but the villain uses his Scorpion (damn he is good!) and amazing kicking skills. The only hope now is to run away. Yu Shu and Little John make it out but the girls are trapped.
It's obvious Lau Kar Leung did a lot of the choreography and some damned good fighting as well especially his fight with the scorpion. Lau being in his fifties didn't look like he had lost a thing since the hey day of the Shaw Brothers. A truly amazing man. But of course Yu Shu needs to try out his skills against the villain and it takes everything he has been taught plus a form of his own creation, the Eel style.
Chin Kar Lok is at a decided disadvantage. No matter how much he could train or do quality acrobatics there is no getting away from the kicking Master. It's difficult to watch anyone else unless he is tearing their head off at the time. And with Lau in the film it leaves the "hero" in third place. Chin is underrated and does have martial arts skills worthy of being on film. But the star is Kim Won Jin, no one will argue with that!
There is humour added naturally but it does help lighten up the story considering it is built around selling girls/women into slavery and prostitution. But as I said earlier don't worry too much about the plot. It's there to add some comedic filler into what could have been a very dark and depressing film.
Back to the Master of kicking - he needs to make more films! I can't say enough about how astounding he really is, just wish there was more of him. I have seen every kicker anyone could name and none of them are better than Kim Won Jin. I'm familiar with wire work and using tubing. I don't think he is on any wire as the Scorpion. And there are other instances where it certainly looks like pure talent.
My only real complaint is that some scenes were shot in a hand held and the fights too close up in places. The finale fight is too dark, visually. It is supposed to be night but it makes some action difficult to see. But after you watch it a few times, and then a few times more with friends you will get the full effect.
Buy it, it's a keeper. Maybe buy two in case it wears out. : )
A great one to own and share with friends who love awesome kicking. To be honest I think that's really everybody. Some of us just don't talk about it as much.
What's that you say? You like seeing people kicked in the head but you don't own this movie? Sounds like a problem. I'd get on that. It's hard to say something about this flick that hasn't been said before so I'll do my best not to get too cliche or generic. For me this is more of a root for the bad guy kind of flick. Don't get me wrong I love Lau Kar Leung and he was good in it but no matter how much I tried I just didn't like the hero character. He was kind of sad and almost as big a tool as Mike Lee. Kim Won Jin as the bad guy's son steals the damn show with his funky scorpion style and a kicking arsenal that puts almost everyone you have ever seen to shame. I got to level with you I kick like the devil but when I watch Kim Won Jin do his thing it makes me feel like I need to carry my ass back to gym and try a lot harder because that man stands on top of the kicking food chain and we are all gonna need better goodies to keep up. This movie is just plain fun and full of good reasons to enjoy despite minor cheese deposits. I probably would have gave it a slightly higher rating but like I said the main character was kind of a chump. Get it for the bad guy. Collection Status: Mandatory.

Great review - to the point and totally accurate. Not to worry about the kicking I think it's probably partially genetic : )
After all of the positive hype surrounding both the theatrical and home video releases of "Iron Man", I had some high if slightly cautions expectations. I should have gone with my gut: this one's a stinker. I can take a somewhat outlandish movie plot, and especially if it's a comic adaptation, but COME ON. Not to spoil anything, but the "villains" in this movie alternate between mouth-breathing dimwits and maniacal supergeniuses depending on what the plot requires, and it really stands out as poorly executed. Hell, you don't even get to see Stark suited up properly until the last half hour of the two hour plus runtime! Countless corporate namedrops and audience panders further degrade the experience. While almost the entire cast seemed to be phoning it in, Robert Downey's performance is easily worth a star. I'll also admit that the CG was well done, and some of the suit devices were cool to watch. Still, those moments are few and far between; tread lightly.

Heroes Shed No Tears [1980] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is the movie Fu Sheng staked his career on, proving he could still perform after severe leg and head injuries (he could, but not quite so well as before. His agility was diminished, and he had gained some weight)--and also that his acting range went beyond his patented Fong Sai-Yuk hot-tempered man-child (he could, playing an earnest young man very well). Besides its significance to his career, this is a very enjoyable, well-acted and well-directed film.

This is a very good film with an outstanding storyline. As you said, very enjoyable.
"My Young Auntie" has a very simple plot of a young lady (Kara Hui) marrying a dying rich man to stop his inheritance from going to a bad uncle (villain legend Wang Lung Wei). How is this simple plotline stretched out to a runtime of just over 2 hours? one might ask. Could it be an abundance of superb Lau Kar Leung action scenes? No, unfortunately it's crappy Lau Kar Leung comedy. "My Young Auntie" has a promising beginning, but manages to sit in idle more than half the film as nothing happens except lousy comedic scenes featuring elements you never want to see in a kung fu flick, such as masquerades, women shopping, and guys singing and dancing dressed up like the three musketeers and Robin Hood.
If you can make it through the lame attempts at comedy, "My Young Auntie" does offer some solid action from an impressive cast. The always beautiful Kara Hui (even today as she's nearing 50 yrs old) really gives an award-winning performance and can be quite convincing without having any formal kung fu training. Hsiao Ho is excellent, as always, and in my mind remains one of the most underrated martial artists in kung fu film history. Gordon Liu can even be spotted sporting a ridiculous wig and stache as his talents were really wasted here.
I'm not saying "My Young Auntie" is a terrible film, but a bit of a letdown in which the brief but solid action could not make up for all the crappy comedy. This is far from one of Lau Kar Leung's best efforts and even further from a kung fu classic.
I gotta' agree with you 100% here. The people who love this film are lucky, I've tried and failed several times. There are highlights, but overall it's not worth my time.
Dobermann (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime Explosive, vicious, and funny, this cult gangster flick from France offers up plenty of enjoyable thrills. Vincent Cassel is excellent as the charismatic thief Dobermann, but Tcheky Karyo steals the show as the psychotic and brutal cop tailing Dobermann's gang. This flick is stylish without taking itself too seriously.

It isn't perfect, but there sure is alot of tight action in this one. Pretty solid effort from Wu Jing as a crazy thug.
After almost 1000 movie reviews, your friendly neighborhood webmaster has had to sit through his share of bad cinema. To their credit, all those Godfrey Ho and Chu Yen Ping debacles I've had to suffer through have given me quite a tolerance for Z-level pictures. But there are still some productions which generate a feeling not unlike a cold icepick to the temples -- and Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave is definitely one of them.
The movie kicks off with a ridiculous sequence where "Bruce Lee" (whose gravestone was apparently bought at the same 99 cent store where you can get this DVD) being brought back to life via a lightning strike -- displayed, of course, via grainy stock footage. Apparently, zombie Bruce goes off to play pai gow poker, since we never see him again. The star here is Bruce K.L. Lea (real name Jun Chong) playing a guy named Wong, who heads to Los Angeles to meet up with one of the guys he used to run a school with. His former partner turns out to be dead, and Wong now has a series of racial stereotypes after him. Dragging a semi-cute and ditzy sidekick along for the ride, Wong sets out to find the "shocking" truth about who killed his friend.
The sidekick is played Debby Tebora, credited here as Deborah Chaplin -- I guess no one involved with this crud wanted their names attached. In fact, it was actually rumored at one point that the film was helmed by Italian horror director Umberto Lenzi. Nope, it's actually Doo-Yong Lee, a Korean director who surprisingly had a fairly respectable career in Asia before and since this cinematic turd. The same cannot be said for the rest of the cast and crew, many of which have this as their sole credit on IMDB. Maybe they were all buddies of Doo-Yong's who got drunk on soju, wrote the script on cocktail napkins, borrowed someone's super-8 camera, and set about to make the worst Brucepolitation flick ever. At least that's what the end results make it seem like.
Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave is the sort of movie that's fun for about the first ten minutes while you quaff a beer and make fun of its' shortcomings. But then, after the first terrible attempt at putting a fight scene on-screen hits your eyeballs like an acid wash, the stark realization hits you that you have eighty more minutes of this garbage to sit through, and no amount of liquor will be able to numb the pain. Even the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 troupe, who have made a career out of making trash like Manos: The Hands of Fate at least somewhat enjoyable, would be hard-pressed to wring any sort of enjoyment out of this failed production. From start to finish, Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave is simply one of the worst movies this reviewer has ever had the displeasure of sitting through. Do your brain (and sanity) a favor and don't waste your time or money with this cinematic turd.

I wonder if they gave Mike Lee the money to buy the gravestone.
Calling this movie insane does not go far enough to describe the craziness that is "Bastard Swordsman". I can think of no word that can accurately describe how outrageous this movie really is. It is not hyperbole to state that this movie is so unlike anything you have ever seen that it must be seen to be believed. In my opinion, this movie represents the high water mark of old school special effects; it is head and shoulders above the usual amazingly crappy effects you see in kung fu films of this period.
There are also some excellent fight scenes contained within this film, with many strange and unusual weapons making appearances.
However, this movie is not without its flaws. I am no fan of wire-fu and magic-fu and this movie has both in almost every frame. But given the rest of the film, this is not surprising. It would have been nice to have seen some more plausible fights though. But given this flaw, the film is still highly entertaining and it represents the pinnacle of the fantasy kung fu genre, in my opinion.

You and I have the same opinion when it comes to wire work, but for some reason it worked for me in this film.
Drunken Master (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Even though I'm a huge fan of Jackie, and indeed Hwang Jang Lee, I never really felt that this movie lived up to all its hype. It is not a bad movie by any means, just not as great as it is made out to be.
It is often (wrongly) hailed as the original Kung Fu comedy, along with "Snake In The Eagle's Shadow". But the comedy isn't that funny to me, and just takes up too much of the running time for my taste.
The end fight is great. But just not enough to warrant the stellar reputation and endless praise the movie has garnered over the years, in my humble opinion.
I would take almost any of Jackie's Golden Harvest films over this one any day, even "Young Master" and "Dragon Lord".
If you really wanna' be blown away by Jackie's amazing Drunken Boxing skills, watch the superior "Drunken Master 2".

Glad that someone has the balls to disrepect this overrated film. Granted I liked it enough for the fights and Simon Yuen, the comedy is like a drill in my head.
Entirely too much "comedy". Frankly, the success of this and the resultant kung-fu "comedies" from countless imitators practically ruined the classic old-school kung fu genre. I hate this laughably overrated movie.
I understand how you feel about this film living up to its hype. I graded it on a curve because for its time it was ground breaking as slap stick kung fu comedy.
Kiltro (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts "Kiltro" is a story about a stalker named Zamir who wears bell bottoms and loves a girl named Kim, and he will fight anybody that looks at her the wrong way--well that's how I saw it.
"Kiltro" is a low-budget B-movie actioner with homages to great films like "For a Few Dollars More", "Star Wars" and 1980's kung fu films. The movie is very cheesy, with bad acting, but what I really liked about it was that the cast and director knew this and they decided to make the best of it--gathering everything that they knew and love into this film. The action scenes were short, but I saw this film as more of a spaghetti western than a martial arts movie. And if you see it that way you won't be disappointed with this film.
Clan Feuds (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a feature based on a Ku Lung novel directed by Chang Peng Yi, and Starring Ti Lung. This one is not as good as the Ku Lung based movies directed by Chor Yuen starring Ti Lung, but it is entertaining. As usual for a Ku Lung based movie there are many plot twists but the story just does not flow together to evenly. Ti Lung and Lo Meng turn in some great performances in a story involving two feuding clans, as they each try to get the upper hand on one another. Good sets and good action. For those who are fans of movies based on kung fu fantasy novels!

Great pairing of Lo Meng and Ti Lung but unfortunately the story was all over the place. 3 1/2 stars is about right.
Everyone and their mommas got to review this flick so pretty much everything that can be said about this flick has been said already. I guess I shouldn't even bother. Wait a minute, screw that, I want a piece too.
A lot of folks seem to think that this is one of the greatest kung fu movies of all time. Those folks know what they are talking about. This ball of thunder laced lightning hits rougher and heavier than a Kimbo Slice uppercut. We all know the deal and we all know who's in it. The real eternal question is: which match-up is sicker? Jet vs. Yasuaki Kurata, or Jet vs. Billy Chow? There's a stumper for you. They both rock so hard that if you bring up this question among your friends who are into fu flicks it will usually spark a pretty wild debate. I personally lean slightly toward the Jet/Yasuaki showdown. Something about wind and blindfolds--it just gets me going, dude.
"Fist Of Legend" is possibly the closest thing to perfect fight choreography around (perfect is relative, but honestly it might be perfect) and incorporates many martial art styles, such as Longfist, Ditang Chuan, Tong Bei, Chin Na, Aikido, Karate, boxing, Judo, Jujitsu, and quite a few more that I am probably forgetting. I know some cats say that the general was using Muay Thai. They have either poor eyesight or just improper schooling. Billy's just busting out with hardcore Karate.
This movie is the dope shit and every last one of you know it. If you haven't seen it, you better head for the hills, son, because we will hunt you down and staple you to something so we can force you to see this awesome piece of kung fu cinema history. You'll probably thank us afterwords and maybe even offer us a beer. And we'll accept. 'Cause we like beer. Keep kicking for the stars, folks. I'll be around.

didn't like it as much has some cuz I hate remakes but this is the schitzer, ACHTUNG! :)
I've seen a lot of reviews for "Fist of Legend" this week. I am pumped for the Dragon Dynasty release. This is one of the best kung fu movies ever made, I still remember watching it in theaters-it was a great experience.
Drunken Master 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Good fights, but I don't know what all the hoopla is about on this one. If you're a collector of MA films, yes; but if you just want to get the best of the best, then no. I'm not dissing Jackie Chan, but this is no "Police Story", "Wheels on Meals", or even "To Kill With Intrigue", but rather humorous kung fu action entertainment. Try the original or even "Snake In The Monkey's Shadow" first.
After multiple viewings I still have some mixed feelings about this film. There are plenty of positive aspects, and I think it has a great story. "The Bride With White Hair" also has many other great strengths, such as cinematograghy, editing, and the score, but the main reason to watch is the performances of Bridgette Lin and Leslie Cheung. Bridgette Lin was always great, but this is one of her best roles.
Unfortunately, I found some aspects of the film that I didn't enjoy as much. I know this is a Wuxia fantasy, but I thought the wirework was a little excessive, and it seemed as if every action scene was either sped up too fast or in slow motion, taking away from the beauty of the rest of the film. I also found the evil Siamese twins to be annoying. I read that this film opened a lot of doors in the acting career of Francis Ng, which I still can't figure out. Luckily for him, he does get better roles.
It's easy to see why "The Bride With White Hair" has become an arthouse favorite, but I still think it is a little overrated, although I still recommend it, as many people have different viewpoints on this one. I'm still stuck on whether it deserves 3 1/2 or 4 stars, so I'll unofficially give it 3 3/4.

What bothered you bothered me rather less, so I would increase the rating to 4.5 - but I see what you're saying. While I prefer straight forward action, this is the most extreme form of wuxia pian. With that come wires....
It was different, interesting, but you're right about watching this for Bridgette Lin and Leslie Cheung's performances. The Siamese twins also got on my nerves!
Ten Tigers From Kwangtung (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I would rate this higher, but the cohesion between the two parts of the film is very flawed. It's wonderful to see so many Shaw stars together in top form, but I would have been happier with either story told better and at full length.

The sloppy storytelling definately damaged this film and I also could of benefited with a longer runtime to help work out the plot issues
I agree with everything you said. Although you say there's enough action for you, to me theres just not enough to keep me interested. 2 1/2 stars for Yukari Oshima and Moon Lee and that's it.
