Bio: I really prefer the older movies and I've been watching alot of Fu Sheng and Ti Lung films lately. No matter how many films I watch, my favorite is still Sammo.

Red Cliff 2: The Decisive Battle (product link) Drama / Historical First and foremost, it must be understood that this is not a martial arts flick but a war movie. With that being said, this is a war movie of epic proportions. Everything about this flick works: outstanding characters, terrific acting, flawless direction, great story, and on and on. One of the few times where the sequel is better than the first movie. Highly recommended.

It's helpful having studied the actual events. This is a first class spectacle with excellent direction and very good acting.
Ip Man (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Terrific story, great acting, and some awesome fight scenes make this a must-have for martial arts fans. Even those that don't care for Donnie Yen will appreciate the fantastic job he does in this film. This is definitely Yen's shining moment in his career thus far.
Drunken Master 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I'm always critical when Jackie puts comedy in his movies, but the comedy in this one is really funny and the fight scenes are amazing. This is an all time classic! Highly Recommended.

Ti Lung is his usual excellent self, and Fu Sheng gives a much more fully formed character than usual. I like this quite a bit.
The Secret Rivals 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure In my opinion this movie is better than the first, although I prefer Wong Tao over Tino Wong. It really doesn't matter though because Hwang Jang Lee steals the show once again!! This movie is loaded with great action and superb fight scenes. Highly recommended.

I like 1 and 2 about equally. Hwang Jang Lee is just too good to imagine EVER losing.
Once Upon A Time In China 2 (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts This is a great movie and I highly recommend it. Jet Li is awesome once again. Some feel that this is better than the first outing, but I feel the first is just a little better. Still, this is a 5 star movie.

This was in the first five HK films I bought, and it is still one of the best. The Celestial and other Chinese language versions are much better than the English dub.

Return Of The 5 Deadly Venoms (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a great movie, though it's not really a sequel and there's only four Venoms--but still great nonetheless. May even be better then the original "5 Deadly Venoms", but being that the two movies aren't really related (other than by name), they should be judged on their own merit.

I just think of it as "Crippled Avengers," and enjoy it tremendously. I am not usually a fan of Chiang Sheng, but the conceit of his character's affliction is an excellent use of him.
Chinese Super Ninja (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure If you like old school Kung Fu with a lot of action, then this movie is for you. It has lots of great fighting scenes and is really a fun movie. The plot may seem a little hokey, but the action more then makes up for what may lack in the plot. Definitely recommend.
Lady Of The Law (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Very entertaining old school classic. This features a very strange role for Lo Lieh, but as always he's definitely worth watching. Definitely a recommended old school classic.
The Lady Assassin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is one fantastic movie! Very entertaining from start to finish, with a stellar cast and a great storyline! Everyone in this film was kicking butt, including all the ladies. Highly recommended.
Bastard Swordsman (product link) Martial Arts / Swordplay/Sword(s) Normally, nobody complains more about wirework than me, but this movie is so well done that you can't help but sit back and enjoy. Everything about it works for me with the exception of the silkworm stuff at the very end, which was just a little too overboard, which is why I knocked off 1/2 a star. If you go into this film expecting a wuxia fantasy, you'll be happliy impressed. If you are expecting a realistic martial arts swordplay movie, look elsewhere. Highly recommended if you want something a little different.

The Lady Hermit (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Classic wuxia at its finest! Great teaming of Cheng Pei-Pei and Lo Lieh, and I thought Si Si was also very good, although some reviewers found her to be annoying. Highly recommended for fans of wuxia.
One Armed Swordsmen (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A really cool idea executed to perfection by Wang Yu and David Chiang. Throw in a minor performance by the always great Lo Lieh and you have a movie that doesn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

Ong-Bak 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I'm not sure what some people were expecting. It was made clear before the film's theatrical release that this was not going to be an "Ong-Bak" sequel. Let's see, Jaa went to the big city in search of a relic ("Ong-Bak"), and then he went to the big city in search of an elephant ("Tom Yum Goong"). What did you want him to go searching for this time, a lost puppy dog? I agree, naming this "Ong-Bak 2" was moronic, but it doesn't make this a bad film. It makes it a badly named film. I know some people wanted more Muay Thai, but if Tony Jaa does the same thing over and over again, people will bitch "all he can do is Muay Thai"! Bottom line, if you want to see an entertaining martial arts film, I highly recommend this one. No it's not quite as good as "Ong-Bak" or "Tom Yum Goong", but how many films are?

What you say is correct. While Tony Jaa's Muay Thai is very attractive, he has never given any reason to think that's all he had to or meant to offer. One doesn't expect orthodox southern forms from Jackie Chan. Both stars offer a widescreen spectacle.
Return Of The One Armed Swordsman [3-Movie Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure An excellent follow-up to the martial arts classic, "One Armed Swordsman", this time with Fang Gang (Jimmy Wang Yu's character) going up against the Eight Kings of Swords. This has a great story and Wang Yu really does a superb job as the One Armed Swordsman. There's a little crazy wirework, but other than that this one is definitely a must-see. Highly recommended.

Yes. Jimmy Wang Yu, while not a proficient martial artist, is a very talented actor. He is very well showcased here.
The Sword [1971] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a very good flick starring Jimmy Wang Yu as an obsessed nobleman, the catch being he is obsessed with a sword, not necessarily power. As one other reviewer stated, the subtitles on the Crash Masters DVD are near impossible to read in spots, but I recommend watching this a few times if necessary. This is a solid Wang Yu flick!
Martial Art Master Wong Fai Hung (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I'm very surprised that more people haven't seen this movie because it is quite good! Chin Kar-Lok is fantastic as Wong Fei-Hung and Lam Ching-Ying is terrific in a small role as Hwang Chi-Yin. I'm not sure how historically accurate this film is, but the action is top notch and the story is very solid as well. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that the subtitles [on my version] are hard to read sometimes because they blend into the white background. Other than that, I highly recommend this movie.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is great movie and many times I found myself pressing rewind (not "rewing" as I stated by accident in Jeffrey Frawley's review) to see some of the amazing moves over and over again. I thought the story was pretty good, although I have to admit you have to realize this is not a documentary but a martial arts movie meant to entertain. And entertain it does!! I think the future looks very bright for Jeeja Yanin and those of us that like martial arts action films. Highly recommended.

With this film, The Rebel and Coweb the future is looking great for tough chicks in matial arts movies. I can't wait to see more from this new generation of skilled female combatants.
Shaolin Temple Strikes Back (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a terrific old school martial arts film! Mark Lung is awesome playing the drunken monk, but Chen San is equally good as an evil general looking to steal the princess from the grips of the Shaolin monks. I had never seen Wong Goon- hung before, but he is also good as a young bodyguard to the princess. I highly recommend this film for those that like old school kung fu movies featuring training scenes and tons of fights.
Beach Of The War Gods (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure There's nothing new as far as the Chinese vs. Japanese storyline goes, but this is an action-packed movie that delivers. I must also add that this is one of Wang Yu's better performances outside of the "One Armed Swordsman" flicks. Highly recommended for those that like lots of action.

Jimmy can throw his arms around with sword in hand and make it into a cult classic. Sure copying the Japanese 'Seven Samurai' classic, but Jimmy makes it worth while.
You are right about Wang Yu: He was at his best in the One Armed Swordsman films, nearly as good in this, tolerable in the One Armed Boxer films, and much worse in just about everything else. His martial arts are minimal.
Lone Wolf And Cub 6: White Heaven In Hell (product link) Action/Adventure / Swordplay/Sword(s) This is a great series and this film does not disappoint, except for the ending, which I will not ruin for those who haven't seen it yet. I also highly recommend every movie in the series, although I felt "Shogun Assassin 3" (in the AnimEigo numbering of the films) was a little weak.
Azumi 2 (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Excellent sequel to the original. The storyline where they added a character that looked exactly like Azumi's old love interest was weak, but it doesn't matter all that much because what we want to see is Azumi mow down those that stand in her path anyway. If you liked the first flick, I highly recommend this one too.

Grand Master Of Death (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Great movie starring Alexander Fu Sheng as the only person willing to stand up to the thugs in his village. Wang Lung Wei is an awesome villain with help from Leung Kar Yan (Beardy). My only complaint was the director's choice to stop the action in the end fight between Wei and Fu Sheng to flashback to show Fu Sheng training. Highly recommended.

A good story and perfect casting. Fu Sheng's characters could be annoyingly naive, but I really like this one.
Alexander Fu Shing is one of my favorite martial arts stars, he really excels in this film as the only guy not intimidated by a bunch of thugs. Wang Lung Wei as usual is a great villain, as you stated this is a great film!
Shaolin Traitorous (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a great movie. I love to see Sammo playing serious roles even if it's as a villain. Chang Yi and Carter Wong deliver great performances as well. I took 1/2 star off because the wall of men was interesting the first time but long and and a little tedious the second time. I highly recommend this movie for the non stop action.
Lone Wolf And Cub 5: Baby Cart In The Land Of Demons (product link) Action/Adventure / Swordplay/Sword(s) This is a big improvement over "Shogun Assassin 3" (if you're following the AnimEigo numbering of the films). Good story, lots of spurting blood; and my only complaint is with the ease with which he disposes of the five warriors of the Kuroda clan. Higly recommended.
Fearless Fighters (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I can't explain why, but I really enjoyed this movie. It's not that the fighting is great or that the story was anything special, but it's just a little different than most movies you see. This isn't to be taken seriously, but just a fun movie to sit back and watch. Highly recommended.
Versus (product link) Martial Arts / Horror This movie has it all: zombies, gangsters, cool fights; and it's quite unique. My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is that it loses a litle steam towards the end but soon picks back up. Highly recommended if you want to watch something just a little different.
The Buddha Assassinator (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Another solid performance from Hwang Jang Lee. Pretty good plot and some excellent martial arts action. Highly recommended.
Duel For Gold (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime This is a great movie. You'll need a scorecard to keep track of all the double crosses in this one. Once again, Lo Lieh is awesome as usual. Highly recommended!!
Shanghai 13 (product link) Crime / Martial Arts Nothing much happens in the first 25 minutes, but once it gets going it's non-stop kung fu action for the last hour. This movie is a veritable who's who of Shaw Brothers superstars. It would have been nice to see my personal favorite, Lo Meng, but the Venoms are well represnted by Chiang Sheng and Lu Feng. Despite lackluster reviews from others, I highly recommend this movie.
Spooky Encounters (product link) Ghost / Martial Arts This is a very good kung fu/horror movie starring Sammo. He has a few outstanding fight scenes in this one, mixed in with some truly funny comedy and a little horror. My only complaint is that the black magic scenes seem to drag the movie down a bit. Other than that, this was a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

Shaolin Wooden Men (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Another great old school classic featuring Jackie!! The "wooden men" play a very small role in this one, but there's lots of training scenes and plenty of fights. Highly recommended.
Heroes Of The Wild (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure It would be almost impossible to make a bad movie which has Hwang Jang Lee, Lo Lieh and Chen Sing in it. This one has great fight action and lots of it. Highly recommended.
