Bio: Long time HK/Asian action film fan, since the 80's. I watch and collect all types of genres.... Kung Fu,Triad, Action, Heroic bloodshed etc. My favourite period is 70´s and 80´s. Also known as the Golden Age of HK filmmaking.
I Value the opinions of other connoisseurs and people who are respectful and knowledgable about the genre.
I can't stand people who are ignorant but still shoots their mouth off, using words like "Chop Sockey" or "Karate movie" when talking about Kung Fu classics.
Can movies "influence" people to commit suicide? If you answered "yes" then you're an idealistic liberal Nazi. Can movies "make" you kill yourself? YES, THEY CAN! This may be the last review by yours truly, because, after watching "9 Deaths Of The Ninja", I'm going to that big apple in the sky or whatever it's called, all because of this vile piece of vomit by self-mutilation. Tell your fellow anti-movie-hating liberals that yes there is a movie that exerts suicidal tendencies and it's called "9 Deaths Of The Ninja". I'll e-mail the liberals my ugly face so they use it as an example as to why shitty movies kill. They can put under my picture, "This fat-ass idiot killed himself over '9 Deaths Of The Ninja'. He will be sorely missed." Then plagiarize it as a means to ban this film from public viewing or further DVD releases. I'm willing to play the martyr.
The movie started off good. I mean, Sho and some idiot assassinating some Arabs, which turns out to be a training sequence? It was lovely. Then from there on out it's completely sucky. This is probably the most crappy and inconsistent film ever made, and I'm talking bad. It's like the evil step brother of "Plan 9 From Outer Space". The storytelling is so incoherent, it was almost impossible to sit through and follow. I got the premise that is about some terrorist group lead by a Nazi cripple with a pet monkey and some soul chick who calls herself Colonel Honey Hump that takes hostages so they can free some 7-foot wacko--but the storytelling is horrid.
"9 Deaths" does have its comical moments, I think. I'm not even sure as to whether the comedy was intentional or not. The comedy moments were shit, like when Sho fights some midgets dressed up Michael Jackson (or gangsters or whatever). Errr...that's about it.
One thing that did make me laugh so loud that I puked out my lungs was the credits at the beginning. As the title credits ensue, you'll see Sho perform his ninjitsu in a sexually suggestive form while some love song is playing. Then these ballerina dancers start prancing about (dis)gracefully. Oh my god, I wanted to die.
The action in this film wasn't any good either. It's like "Revenge Of The Ninja", only abate times 1,000,000,000,000,001. It was sloppier than hell and (by far) doesn't make up for this film's crappiness.
Another example of the film's absurdity (in a bad way) is Sho dressing up like an old man for no apparent reason as he beats up some guys. WHAT THE FUCK IS IT ALL ABOUT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!?
You know what, scratch the suicide thing. All I have to do is watch it again and I'll get some sort of telepathic infliction which will exert a brain tumor, followed by encephalitis, then my head will explode. There we go, that outta' bring the religious nut-jobs to help with banning this ass soup.

This is officially THE worst movie I have ever seen! im still recovering.
Fistful Of Dollars (product link) Western / Action/Adventure An unacknowledged remake/rehash of Akira Kurosawa's great "Yojimbo", this film from Sergio Leone was made on too small a budget to afford better supporting actors or scene coverage, but Clint Eastwood soared to superstardom on his own charisma and Sergio Leone's sense of drama. Each of the pseudo-sequels is better than the last, but this is still pretty good.

A great movie... but kinda pales in the sequels shadow!
For A Few Dollars More (product link) Western / Action/Adventure I didn't really "get" "Fistful Of Dollars" when I saw the "Dollars" trilogy at the age of eight or nine (although I came around before long). This is the film that grabbed my attention. While the budget was still quite low, it was a huge improvement over the first film, and there is some improvement in the supporting cast. Gian Maria Volante, so good as Ramon Rojo--the principal villain in "Fistful Of Dollars", is better as El Indio--the principal villain in "For A Few Dollars More". Lee Van Cleef is a very welcome addition as Colonel Mortimer--taciturn and efficient as his character, Angel Eyes, in the succeeding "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly", but a very different kind of man: seeking retribution, not a cashbox.

I would go to a full five on this one! My favourite Leone flick!
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (product link) Western / Action/Adventure Perhaps this film is too long, and tells too many stories, and is full of unnecessary scenes. Perhaps not. It is a grand, panoramic view of a three-way battle for money in the midst of a devastating Civil War, filmed beautifully in a Spain substituting for eastern New Mexico. Some amateur historians have quibbled that the American Civil War never reached so far west of the Mississippi River. Actually it did, but not in such a large fashion as shown here. That's not the only anachronism: note how many of the soldiers of fortune in 1861-65 use cartridge revolvers, which were not introduced until 1869, or widespread until the invention of the Colt Model 1873 (in 1873, as you might expect). This is not history, but a tour of the inside of Sergio Leone's imagination. It is grand.

You're right. It could have been shaved down, considerably. But the where to begin?
Once Upon A Time In America (product link) Crime / Drama Sergio Leone made at least three masterpieces: "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly", "Once Upon A Time In The West", and this. This is better than the others--more psychologically deep, more excellently scored, and much, much better acted. In its initial U.S. release, this great film was absolutely castrated: restructured into a much shorter chronological sequence rather than moving back and forth in time, and leaving out the introductions, youth, adulthood, and deaths of important characters.
This is not a film to approach literally: it is Noodles Aaronson's (Robert De Niro's character) story told as he knows it, remembers it, or thinks it was. I can't say what "really" happened. Neither can Noodles. Do not step away from the picture or turn it off before the final image: it is important. I think I may know what really happened, but maybe not.

Love the childhood part. Like the 1933 part. Hate the 1968 part. To etheral and artsy for its own good. It pains me to say this, but Leone dropped the ball on this one!
No & yes. The film does have it's unforgettable moments but due to the fact I felt a little short handed by the ending. I felt it ended when they crashed the car.
And do not forget to mention Leone's " Duck, You Sucker" which is originally apart of his "American trilogy". I agree with your review. This is one of those films that will stay with the viewer forever.
Shinobi (product link) Action/Adventure / Fantasy This has got to be the worst ninja movie ever. I don't understand why people rated it so high. Sure, I watched the manga and anime version, it's great, but the live action version sucks because they don't have the budget to make the special effects look real, and the actors look so fake. I can't believe how dumb this movie is. As I said, if you have no brain and still believe in fantasy and fairy tales, then this movie suits you perfectly. But if you are a hardcore kung fu action fan like me, stay away from it at all costs. I think that's why we're here in the first place!

I neither agree/disagree with your review but you watched a Japanese "ninja" movie for hardcore kung fu action? Lolz
In fact NO WAY, if you have no brain then you wouldn't notice the great storyline that this movie offers. Man, this movie has everything. Each to their own. But shit, you missed a magic movie here.
I'm not sure if I would call this a ninja movie and I could see where some hardcore kung fu fans could dislike it, but I felt this was well done and quite interesting. I couldn't help feel like I was watching a superior version of the X-Men
Shaolin Master Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure this got to be the most over rated film ever, i don't know why people rated so high, it's got very slow and boring action, slow storyline, i felt to sleep half way of the film, i reckon this is gorden liu's worst film, watch the invisible pole fighter instead!

You should give up watching & rating martial arts films
Bow down and show some respect for one of the top ten all time greatest kung fu flicks. Lower. Let me start of by saying that I just really wanted to write a review for this movie but I acknowledge that Jay Lee probably wrote the best review for this movie already. Just giving props to those that are deserving. Now to my insane ramblings of blather that are often misinterpreted and in some cases incomprehensible due to my heavy use of logic and honesty.
This one doubles as not only my favorite Gordon Liu movie but also as my favorite Shaw Brothers movie. I know there are so many to choose from and you think that one is the best and dude over there is all like "what about the '36th Chamber'?" Well, chill, we're talking about my favorites now, not yours. We talk about your favorites in your review, sucka.
Lau Kar Leung crafts this movie and its fight scenes with inspired perfection. Gordon Liu dishes out the goods with the jack-of-all trades fu by demonstrating that old school multiple proficiency that pretty much died in the 90's when everyone could just have a single gimmick and still get by. This movie is not only arguably Gordon Liu's best martial arts performance but also Yasuaki Kurata's as well. You have to wait all the way to the end to see Yasuaki finally get down; but when he does, HOLY SHIT, he's a fuckin' smokin' now! (Maybe, just maybe, there is one "Family Guy" fan out there who got that reference. Probably not.)
Anyhow, this film has got one of the best complilations of variety in martial arts styles and weapons put to use. The Japanese performers and characters are all straight-up bad-asses, and really Japanese, unlike many other Chinese films that used Chinese actors and portrayed the Japanese as bitch-made predatory miscreants. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'. Well, I guess to truly complete a review for this movie I got to give up my favorite fight. Damn, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one favorite I would cheat and say the entire end fight with Gordon and Yasuaki, which is basically like 3-4 fights in one. I don't mean to beat a dying horse (unless it's called for or I'm bored or something), but Mr. Kurata is so frickin' slick it's unreal. The man handles a ninja-to like he was born holding one, and his crab style is one of the dopest, slickest and most creative things I have ever seen. This movie has everything for martial arts lovers including a tough chick.
I also got to say Buddha bless Dragon Dynasty for releasing these perfectly digitally remastered fu classics with the original subtitles and dubbings while including all kinds of sweet bonuses like interviews with the legends that made these movies possible. Make sure this is in your collection. Essential and severely enjoyable.

the ratings and the reviews say it all. a must have for any collector
If HKFLIX had higher star rating, this movie would be up there. The movie is amazing, it had no blood, & no finishing movies but it entertains. Plus it's a great history lesson too.
Wu Tang Magic Kick [Crash Cinema 2-Disc Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This movie was all right, but I must tell you about the cinematography of this film. It is amazing and it brings more of a pleasure to watch this film. I highly recommend this film if you are taking a media aesthetic course. There is a lot to learn.
Shaolin Prince (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Frenetic fun with more wirework than is to some people's taste. The choreography is lovely, the plot moves along at a gallop, and the comedic passages with the insane monks are not enough to make me think less of this delightful film.
Hey, it has Ti Lung. That's enough to counteract a large number of flaws.
New Police Story (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Those expecting a continuation of the highly successful "Police Story" series will feel short-changed, but this is a pretty good film if one can get past those genre expectations. It has much more in common with "Crime Story", also from Jackie Chan, than the "Police Story" series.
Chan plays a veteran hotshot police detective whose bravado led to the death of his previous team and his own descent into shame and abject alcoholism. Now he finds himself facing the same master criminals with a new, smaller group.
Nicholas Tse is a less dominant presence than Jackie Chan, and the other co-stars are less prominent still. That is the weakness of much late-period Jackie Chan cinema: he is much too large an eminence for the balance of the films. When the spotlight leaves him, it finds very little of interest.

I agree, JC carried this film. However it was a good police drama.
I love this movie! And you're right, don't think of it as PS flick. Cuz in many ways it's not. It is however, better than the pile that is First Strike!
After Police Story 4 (first strike) we did not really need to reboot the franshice. The film downfalls due to it's cliche buddy cop films & no thrill attitudes among the stars.
You know, I hate this movie, yet I've seen it 12 times now. What the hell is wrong with me? Just think in 30 years this film will be considered an absurd cult classic of some sort, just like all the shit in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. But for now, it can only be liked by idle-minded pederasts.
This film deserves a tiny fraction of credibility due to one man who died after the making of this bigoted, unethical piece of Nazi trash, and that is Raul Julia. Damn, his superb acting just consummately overshadows this film's abysmal structure of stupidity. Too bad really, his very existence almost makes up for this...this ASS, but it's not enough.
Where "Street Fighter" ('94) ultimately fails is in just about everything, from its horrible action, its ridiculous pacing, suck ass acting (except Raul Julia and, for some weird reason, the Russian guy called Zangief--dude, he was funny), poor and ignorant casting--for example the casting of a Samoan to play a Japanese sumo wrestler (E. Honda is not a Samoan name, f@#$ers)--and so forth. And the list perpetuates until my head explodes.
The success of this film is the chick who played Chun Li. UGH SHE'S HOT! And that's about it.
I hate this movie and yet I continue to watch it over and over again. KILL ME, NOW!!!!!!! :)

All copies and negatives should be destroyed so Raul Julia can rest in peace! As Tigerbloodclaw put it, no stars!
How many ingredients does this how have to be a bomb before the filming ever started. A movie based on a video game and Van Damme is enough for me. Ugh!
Escape From New York (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime Oh please. Come on. One of Carpenter's best films. What impresses me most about this film is that it was a low budget film. "Escape's" cinematography is outstanding, with a dilapidated outlook of New York City.
Where the film also succeeds is in characterization. Kurt Russell is THE SHIT! He perfectly portrays the Snake character so f@#$in' perfectly that I might shit with exuberance. I love the Snake character with such a passion that I might consider converting to being gay and having posters of Snake on the wall. Eh, you don't need to read my perversion. Besides, it's personal. The other characters are great, with their hobo-like structure and cyber-punk attire and so forth.
The action is great. The...GODDAMN IT, THIS MOVIE RULES!!!!!! AAAAAARRRGH! THE END! CAN'T REFUTE ME, SUCKAZ!!!!!! :)

I nearly agree with the rating, and will leave the review alone.
I love almost every Capenter movie from Assault On Precint 13 up to and including They Live. But I just don't dig on this one... don't know why. I like Adrienne Barbeau's boobs though!
I agree with everything you and Choco said plus your review is LOL funny. Other great aspects include John Carpenter music, Ox "hairy ass back" Baker as Slag, and Maggie`s hooters.
Dirty Harry (product link) Crime / Thriller "Dirty Harry" is a believable investigation of a San Francisco police inspector hogtied by civil liberties regulations when he KNOWS who the bad guy is.

I think this was the filmmakers somewhat compromising response to the leftwing backlash that followed the first movie. But a decent film, nonetheless!
The Enforcer (product link) Crime / Thriller In "The Enforcer" Harry is teamed up with a tough, earnest, and stupid female partner and goes up against seeming Maoist domestic terrorists who turn out to be old-fashioned apolitical thieves.
Sudden Impact (product link) Crime / Thriller In "Sudden Impact" Harry comes up against low life small town rapists and murderers who, inconveniently, are being picked off by someone else. Hey, no fair! He solves the case, but where does justice lie? His answer is very different from what it would be in the first three films.

Clint's girlfiend need a job... hey, let's make Sudden Impact!
This film is a rip-off of Kiss Of Death, and old Shaw Brothers. In Kiss Of Death, the female stabbs her victims balls. In this one the female blows them off.
The Dead Pool (product link) Crime / Thriller In "The Dead Pool" Harry is no longer up against pure evil (1), fascism (2), greed (3), or vengeance (4): now it's decadence and envy. Well-known people whose names appear on a "dead list", a series of bets on which celebrity will be the next to die, are being helped along, and Harry's name is now on the list. He sets things right with a VERY big gun. The character has sunk as low as is possible, and thankfully this is the end.
Fearless [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
He he he he ha ha! Slave strikes again! Apparently he does not care for overhyped kung fu films of today 'cause they are ridiculously ludicrous. Oh sure, you could refute me with this unintelligible comment: "A 2 1/2 rating? But the film had great kung fu action." Great kung fu action does not justify a great film. You know it and I know it. Even a mentally handicapped person knows it. This is just another example as to why kung fu films have sucked and that is due to its self-absorbed art film idiocy and uninteresting story about some moron who learns about humility, narcissism, and hypocrisy throughout his existence due to a precarious personality issue and then becomes a Chinese patriot. God!
Maybe it's me--maybe I just get sick of new movies being cranked out the butthole to only reveal the same old shit. The stories and conceptions for today's kung fu films are soooooo worn out that this could have been an unintentional remake of a movie from the 70's or 80's; but who knows, really. To be perfectly honest, I think you're just looking for any excuse to give films like this any credibility when in truth you are in a state of denial.
The kung fu action was okay. JUST OKAY! I'll always have issues with wirework unless it fits with a film's level of insanity and/or absurdity, like "Tai Chi Master" or "Iron Monkey". But with a film like "Fearless" that's supposed to be consistent and well told (HA!), no wirework is required. It does not work. As far as the movements of the actors go, it feels a bit sloppy, but overall it's...eh, nice.
Probably the main reason why I didn't like this film is because of Jet Li. He is just not a convincing bad-ass. His martial art skills are 99% consummate but his screen presence is just weak. He's just a sissy Mary. The only films I've ever liked with him were "Tai Chi Master", "Fist Of Legend", "Martial Arts Of Shaolin", and for some odd reason "My Father Is A Hero". And perhaps "Once Upon A Time In China" 1-3, only because I like Tsui Hark films.
If you liked this film, fine. I don't care. But in the words of a great reviewer: "Nothing special here." It's just another everyday ordinary kung fu movie. Whoopee-do. Now I await your inflictions with elation.
AND THE ACTING WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!

You know that I couldn't agree more! This garbage was just recycled rerun stuff. I don't understand how so many people can hold this movie in such high regards when it is nothing more than average.
Gotta disagree my friend. Frankly Jet does some of his finest acting here. I agree that we have seen better martial arts action, but I enjoyed this for the good acting performances from Jet and the whole cast!
Kiltro (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Another low budget kung fu flick--nowadays everyone is making those $5,000 kung fu movies. Good performances, those guys got skills, all they need is the budget to make it big. If you like "Contour", you will like this, but don't expect the same level as "Contour".
This movie made me love no-holds-barred bullet ballets, and none are better than "A Better Tomorrow"! There are so many excellent reviews, I don't know that I can really add anything. Ti Lung is one of my favorite actors, and he turns in an excellent performance. Chow Yun-Fat really worked well with the director John Woo and producer Tsui Hark in creating "Mark", who is at times more of a set piece than animated. I don't mean that in a bad way, his coat, glasses, etc. defined Hong Kong cool bad guys back in the mid eighties. Plus when he is moving, bullets are likely to fly.
If you haven't seen this film, you need to do so ASAP, and you need it in your collection. There are a lot of references here that people still use when talking about film. It is much more than bullets-o-rama, although there is no shortage of ammo in most any John Woo film. If you look beyond the action, there is a core of highly charged emotion regarding love of family, "brothers", and loyalty to the triads. It manages to show there is more to triads than bloodthirsty guys with no personality or values. A great film!

My first time viewing Ti Lung in a non martial arts role, and I must say he did an excellent job. One of my favorite John Woo films!
I don't get art films and I never will or want to. This film is completely overrated and stupid. Just because this was the first, quote unquote, kung fu film that hit the mainstream portion of American society (or so I heard) does not make it authentic or original.
The story went nowhere as we delve deep into the bowels of a chick called Zhang Ziyi, whose rebellious nature gets her in trouble with a crappy sword. Then she screws some bandit and starts fights. Meanwhile, Chow Yun-Fat is on a never-ending quest to find the Jade Fox and kill her to avenge his master. Yes this is the story and moronic art film lovers cry over this crap.
I've heard there was a saying pertaining to the floating scene with Zhang and Chow: "their bodies are doing what their hearts cannot." What does this mean, exactly? This is exactly why I hate art films. Nothing makes sense. Oh sure, one must figure out the complexity in order to justify its meaning, but the question remains, does one even care? I can only get psychological stuff when come to perplexities. Art is just nonsensical to me and I am an artist. An oxymoron I am and proud of it.
The action is good with Yuen Wo Ping's brilliant choreography, plus the music implemented with each fight scene with drum banging mayhem, but it doesn't save the movie because of its extremely tedious pacing.
COMPLETELY INCOHERENT AND OVERRATED!!!!!! How a film like this can be loved is beyond my comprehension. 2 stars is too kind coming from me because I can't stand art films, but regardless, the film deserves credit for the action and music. The story goes nowhere and the pacing is like turtles having sex.
Big huge thumbs down to your review. Sorry. If you think this story is stupid then I don't know how you tolerate the "stories" of most kung fu films. Someone has to try something different once in awhile.
The Warriors (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure Warriors come out and plaaaaaayyy. Hell, yeah, fools, act like you know.
The essential classic gang movie. This was 1979, long before gangster rap and Jerry Springer convinced kids it was cool to bring automatic weapons to school and shoot shit up. Back then it was about the throw down. Chains, bats, knives and fists and wits were all real tough, juvenile, outlaw, bastards needed. These kids lived by a code. This adventure was as much about brotherhood as it was about survival.
One of the ultimates in sheer entertainment and adrenaline supplements. One of my all time top 20 movies. If you are not hip, get hip, 'cause "The streets are ours, suckas. It's all ours. Can you dig it?"

Its supposed to be silly thats part of its charm. There is no indication that this film was trying to be serious so just sit and enjoy the sillyness
MS10197 is probably right that this should be taken as a comedy - or something or another else than a realistic thriller, anyway - but I am convinced that it works quite well as whatever it is. "Wah-ree-urz, come out to play-ayyy!"
I think this movie is best taken as a comedy, as silly as it is. Gangs dressed as baseball clowns with a sultry radio host announcing their every move? Come on. This is just plain silly
This is a 5 star awesomely entertaining Walter Hill flick-it's a late 70's80's pic but it's timeless & the directors cut was well done a lot better then the original, I loved the comic strips that detailed the story! i agree with ur review.
Hold onto your hats, sports fans, and try and keep your knickers dry. We have an excellent treat here for all you film lovers. This is one of those movies that can either make or break your Asian film collection. If you don't own it, stop reading right now and purchase the shit. I'll be here when you get back. Now, for the rest of you folks that still aren't sure, "Battle Royale" is monumental entertainment. It combines a deeply probing psychological survey on the effects of extraordinary stress and survival/primal extincts that manifest under extreme (and shady) circumstances in the under-developed minds of children--as well as the media-frenzied constantly escalating bloodlust. Don't be mistaken, folks, this is a story that could one day take place in our world and possibly during our lifetimes. "Battle Royale" draws from many themes of film, books, and short stories that came before it, but it molds these themes into something that winds up feeling truly original. Raw, graphic violence is mixed with stirring emotion and remarkable performances for maximum effect. While I have not read the book, I have every intention of doing so because this story holds the boldness and potency of the classics of literature such as "I Am Legend" (survival against odds),"1984" (society's dystopian circumstances) or even the "Hagakure" ("The Way of the Samurai is in desperateness...Simply become insane and desperate."-page 45 1983 ed. paperback). The film is powerful on so many levels. I did read the entire 15 volume manga though and that rocks, so you should probably go get that too. Now, understand that you will cringe a few times during your first viewing because the action is so raw and the kids are young; so this may provide slight sensory overload, but you'll get over it. You're a big kid now. This movie was everything that "A Clockwork Orange" tried to be. I personally think that Stanley Kubric failed to capture the emotional content of the book I keep hearing about (never read that book either). While one of my dudes on this site does hold that film in high regard I can't help but feel that it came off as meaningless whereas this film ("Battle Royale") comes off as profound and powerful.
If you don't have it, I would give it my highest recommendation; and if you do have it, you should probably watch it at least once every year to keep good company with a well crafted story. Thanks for the time, campers, I got to peel.

Good review. I can understand that someone wouldn't like this film for its controversial nature and content, but saying it is hyped up and not a well made film is ridiculous
Everyone should see this movie, as a test: Those who like it should be heeded; We need not listen to those who do not. It's great (so...you should heed me...really).
Great review. You definitely nailed some of the better points. I'm still trying to work-up what I want to say in my review. You handled it well. 5 stars, hands down.
Battle Royale is a hyped up movie and it's really not that great, kids killing other kids on a remote island- I guess somebody ripped off Lord of the Flies.
def. agree this is an awesome flick about kids goin wild! And agree with your point on a clockwork orange & kubrick- the novel had a much better narrative than the film. The message of the film is powerful- I love this film.
Weeeeee, I'm having fun dogging films that are pretentious and overrated.
Yes, another one of those "artsy fartsy" films where people cry over this film's ridiculous cinematography and say, "What brilliance! What flair. Holy crap, I just nutted in my underwear." God! This film bored me to tears with its stupid art film idiocy. Zhang Yimou is so overrated and a lousy director, much like Ang Lee and any other art filmmakers.
This film is somewhat of an improvement from Zhang Yimou's previous effort "Hero", 'cause yes the story is more consistent and easier to understand. Although the poetic garbage in "Flying Daggers" is more straightforward rather than just going all over the place and being absurdly paradoxical like "Hero" was.
The martial arts action was okay, I suppose. It's the only thing I really cared about and it's not anything to gloat about. It wasn't that great.
The cinematography was nice if you like that sort of thing. I can admire the flowy shit but it's just not my style.
The sex scene was awful. I swear it looked like Takeshi Kaneshiro was having sex with a praying mantis. Ugh!
Well, there you go! Slave loses more credibility because, unlike most people, he can see through these films' deceptions and does not comply to mainstream idiocy. Glad you people like this garbage but I don't. Completely boring and self-indulged piece of crap.
"The butterflies scream in agony, the love you show through apathy, the facade you wear is cruel, as the mountains play the fool." What the f@#$ are you talking about!?!

I agree... This film is more for arthouse goons, than hardcore fu fans!
For the record, this film is not a zero star rating but a -18 star rating. It would have been a -32 if not for Kelly Hu and her butt and boobs. (I think she has boobs. Uh, don't remember.)
Horrible, vile, wretched spawn of Satan. This film is equally as bad as "Romeo Must Die". These dumbasses continue to misuse Jet Li's talents as a martial artist and hang his little ass on a wire. God. At least it isn't quite as bad as "Romeo Must Die". I mean come on! Wire fu football? Are you retarded? Ugh!
The story sucks. It's about Jet Li finding some black crystals.
The action is consummately abysmal. To think, I was all giddy to see a final fight scene with Mark Dacascos and Jet Li and it's ruined because the stupid director felt it was more logical to have all the characters involved to share the final showdown. Damn it, I want a straight fight without interruptions, but noooooo! we must see that overrated and untalented DMX swing a big-ass wooden nunchuck at some bald guy and Kelly Hu fight some chick with a big ass (though it was nice).
This film is like AIDS. You'll die slowly and painfully through every waking moment of your existence until it completely kills you. But watching this film is far worse, so thus I'd rather have AIDS. Recommended to those who like the smell of their own butt.
One of the most absurd monster movies ever made. Man, I don't know what to tell you. This film is so inconsistent in practically everything. Even my insane mind couldn't keep up with it, let alone a mind filled with the most malign drugs known to man.
"Mighty Peking Man" is also extremely entertaining. To think, as I watch, that the best thing this film has to offer was the tiger biting some man's leg off, which was one of the funniest scenes ever crafted. But it never ends, it gets better and better and more and more absurd as the film rolls on, to the point where you get to see the greatest scene of all: Mighty Peking Man stomping on Ku Feng's character. I almost died from laughter. The insanity never ends, until the film ends of course.
There are times where the film does get emotional, where Peking Man is forced to become a misanthrope because of humanity's caustic ignorance and its antagonistic demeanor. It makes you sad to see a man in a monkey suit--er a monster who expresses his trust to humanity only to be betrayed by this atrocity, and in the end you will be rooting for Peking Man to destroy humanity. But when you get to the point where you are emotionally involved, the absurdities will manifest and everything is ruined. I loved it. It just f@#$s with your emotions, constantly.
"Mighty Peking Man" is absurd, stupid, and incoherent, yet it's heart-warming and sincere, and yet it's insane and retarded, and yet it's sad and depressing, and yet it's maniacal and--I swear I could go all day explaining my feelings and thoughts about this film. The only monster films that beat this film's high level of asininity are "Godzilla Vs. Megalon" and "King Kong Vs. Godzilla" as far as I'm concerned. This film is highly recommended to those who like their films campy and stupid and extremely fun.
The Way Of The Dragon (product link) Martial Arts total dis agree, the fight were slow, story is boring, i don't see any special about this film, why people say bruce lee is so great? has he win any world boxing match? no, has he defeat any champion? no, so he just an average human being, his movie is nothing special, just some basci kick and punch, i feel like i can do better!

mike you are an ignorante- read the books so you can understand what he accomplished and then read the books written about you.
Again Mike, this film is a product of the seventies. Bruce Lee directed, and did the fight choreography. Besides the great Chuck Norris fight, Bruce turns in an awsome comic performance!
Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Tony Jaa made a thundering entrance to martial arts superstardom with this low-budget, slightly rough-around-the-edges masterpiece. I am tempted to give it five stars, but the choreography and cinematography of his subsequent films show he and the filmmakers were still developing into something great with this enjoyable film.
Ting is a backwoods orphan raised by the local monk to be a devout protector of his village and its sacred image of Buddha, the Ong-Bak. He must go to Bangkok to recover the Ong-Bak and save his village, which is rapidly declining without the protection of Buddha.
Perhaps this story is nothing but a framework on which to hang Tony Jaa's spectacular moves. That's all right. It's a delightful movie.
CONTROVERSIAL REVIEW WARNING: What I got to say ain't nice. To be fair this review is for the American version of the film as I have not seen the uncut version. I would like to remind you that the exits are on both sides of the aisles. Should any danger above water present itself, the person sitting next to you can be used as a flotation device. Now just relax and enjoy the ride. Please assume crash positions.
I was cheated. I was robbed. Just about any amount of money you paid to see this movie that exceeds four U.S. dollars is a vicious ripoff. Was the fight sequence with the ladder phenomenal? Absolutely. Was that pretty much the only thing worthwhile in this flick? Absolutely. This movie brings shame to the immensely entertaining "Police Story" series by skimping on the fu and fight scenes. Of course there is an underwater fight at the end--meaning slow and lacking the type of dynamic aesthetics we have come to expect from a Jackie film. "First Strike" basically is a meandering, through-the-motions, on auto-pilot Jackie film. Perhaps I was mildly entertained at random throughout, but for the most part I just can't justify giving a movie that I only appreciated for one fight scene more than one and a half stars. Sorry but this is only for strict Jackie completists. I love Jackie just like you folks. That's why this film doesn't do it for me. He's better than that.
Do me a favor: at the next wedding you attend slap a bridesmaid on the ass during the ceremony. If you are questioned on this just tell them you got the idea from a bastard. Enjoy your movies, kids.

Speaking only of the Dimension release, this is correct.
I'm a big JC fan but the American version is a mess, but a 2 star mess for me. Try the uncut version and you'll like this film better, the problem with Dimension film releases of JC movies is the constant cutting of scenes deemed not worthy! Shame!
I saw the American cut in theaters in the late 90's. I finally got to see the original version a few years after and it was worth it. The American Cut works though it's still fun for any Jackie Chan fan.
This Jackie Chan feature has terrific stunts & a nice fight scene thrown in the middle. The action was really impressive. Though it is cheesy, it has the Mr. Chan charm. JC antics are always impressive, he's funny & fun- the film is a blast.
"Police Story 4" has a wild set-up, the movie was good. It had nice stunts, a classic ladder fight, & the under-water fight was clever. The movie was fun, and it still manages to entertain.
Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai (product link) Art / Drama You people need to get aware. There was only one review for this and it sucked. Pay attention, folks, damn. Anyhow, this flick has cult king written all over it. I rarely disagree with the HKFlix evalutation of a movie but they were unreasonably hard on this one. This movie is actually quite brilliant and probably tied with "Throw Down" for best adaption of the samurai code and methodolgy to a contemporary setting in films.
"Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" is evenly distributed entertainment that is filled with great performances from a diverse and talented cast, timeless quotes from the "Hagakure" (the book of the samurai), laugh-out-loud humor and good portions of gunfire. You won't be bored for one minute if you have any kind of an attention span at all. Intelligent, provocative, funny and highly entertaining I would recommend this film to anyone.

I'd rate this slightly lower, but you are basically correct.
JJ is a director you either love or you get put to sleep. I was expecting an action flick, to my first viewing was a disappointment. Once I removed my expectations and gave it more viewings I saw what it was doing. A cameo from RZA to top it off.
This movie tried to hard to explore a character's mind set. The movie didn't not go anywhere, 4 an art picture is was just bland. The movie as a whole was not clear on wht kind of story it wanted 2 tell-therefor the actors we're distracted in their roles
The film does entertain but it's mostly for the people that are into the samurai pictures. I love samurai movies but when they modernize it, I just can't get into that stuff.
The movie was all right, I think the performances were good- I just couldn't get that much involved with it though. The movie is not for everyone, I guess I came with high expectations going in. Tht is 1 mistake tht nobody should do in a pic such as this.
Hey thnks for the comments, your right I only had one review. I thought "Ghost Dog" was an entertaing pic but it's not my taste. The film is well shot but compared to "Throwdown" that was amazing.
i just read the comment you left kungfumaniac and i'm totally with you on that one i think the reviewer in question is fubar if you dont know what that means watch tango and cash.
I agree man. This is Jim Jarmusch's vision of the samurai code, the film is entertaining. Check out Jean-Pierre Melville "Le Samouraï" it's a 1967 hitman film, the guy follows the code too. It's Johnnie To's fave film, & John Woo models his films from it.
SPL: Sha Po Lang (product link) Crime / Drama This film is very similar to "Flash Point", but I think this is the better one of the two. The story drags on a bit, but the action was great. Donnie Yen is clearly getting old, and he likes to show off a bit too much. We all know he is great, worth collecting!

I rate this higher than you, but you're due for a positive response, and not off by all that much.
I actually mainly agree with you, I'm just putting no because everyone disagrees with you. This was a great movie and I rate the fight between Donnie Yen and Jackie Wu Jing as one of the greatest ever.
I know I'm probably going to get some flak for this. It seems that the overall feeling of this movie is split right down the middle. Half the fans think it is an all-time great and the other half of the fans feel like it was a pile of crap that completely cheated its audience. I'm on the fence myself. Although I do have definite feelings about this movie. The audience was cheated. This was nowhere near a great or perfect 5-star movie. Hell no. None of the actors'/martial artists' potential was fully utilized. The choreography was banal recycled rerun type of stuff, and to be honest I get sick of those repetitive "super technique" flicks (though "super style" flicks always seem to kick ass-except this one; it's both). Many champs were wasted. It did capture the feel and style of old school fu flicks but much like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" it just recycled more than it refreshed which almost makes it feel a little less like an old school fu flick because those old schoolers were always good for showing us something random, different or new--something that we had never seen before. This flick is like too many that we have seen before.
Despite all of this, it is done fairly well and there are moments you will appreciate; but altogether it is not really worth it for true Asian cinephiles--but it might be cool for your preteen nephew as a warm up before you show him those real old school classics that will blow him away.

Ugh, one the worst Lar Ka lau films ever concieved. I hate kung fu films that teaches "Killing those who raped your mother is not nice." GIVE ME A BREAK!
I was entertained and it was good seeing older versions of Gordon Liu, Chi Kwun Chun, and the great Lau Kar Leung, but this film did miss on quite a few things.
I probably like this more than you do, but it is very seriously flawed in the treatment of the three young fighters: What is supposed to be funny just isn't.
I agree with your review. The movie is not great and will never be consider a classic. The stars talents were def. wasted in this attempt to make something old, new again. The movie has it moments but most of the time it's another ridicoulous film.
What's that you say? You like seeing people kicked in the head but you don't own this movie? Sounds like a problem. I'd get on that. It's hard to say something about this flick that hasn't been said before so I'll do my best not to get too cliche or generic. For me this is more of a root for the bad guy kind of flick. Don't get me wrong I love Lau Kar Leung and he was good in it but no matter how much I tried I just didn't like the hero character. He was kind of sad and almost as big a tool as Mike Lee. Kim Won Jin as the bad guy's son steals the damn show with his funky scorpion style and a kicking arsenal that puts almost everyone you have ever seen to shame. I got to level with you I kick like the devil but when I watch Kim Won Jin do his thing it makes me feel like I need to carry my ass back to gym and try a lot harder because that man stands on top of the kicking food chain and we are all gonna need better goodies to keep up. This movie is just plain fun and full of good reasons to enjoy despite minor cheese deposits. I probably would have gave it a slightly higher rating but like I said the main character was kind of a chump. Get it for the bad guy. Collection Status: Mandatory.

Great review - to the point and totally accurate. Not to worry about the kicking I think it's probably partially genetic : )
What a malicious, malignant movie this was! My word, someone is on the rag. To think Chow Yun-Fat needs to kill a shitload of animals to cure Maggie's berserker spell. And to think some Worm Tribe priest must kill a bunch of children (and succeeds) to create a stupid-looking monster called Little Ghost. I don't think happy people are going to like this, but eh, screw them.
This is one of Nam Nai Choi's best films ever. I loved it to death. Every corner you turn on this film, there is always something bizarre to see. For example, a Thai girl with the nicest ass in the world cuts a piece of her boob meat to feed it to Yuen Chen's character to hinder the 7th curse effect. Now that's epic. Urgh, not only is it sultry, it's funnier than hell. Plus the monster called Old Ancestor towards the end of the film was great. He looked like the H.R. Giger "Aliens" monster, only with wings and a stupid looking face. Oh I'm getting flustered.
The action is really great and at the same time hilarious. Man oh man, some of the greatest action scenes were watching the Yuen Chen character getting into a no-holds-barred fight with a skeleton which evidently was a puppet on a string. Another was the epic battle with Old Ancestor and Little Ghost. Come on, peoples, you know that was great. Among other things there are plentiful martial arts fights and some gun fights which were surprisingly well choreographed and intense. Even some of the stunts that were pulled off in this film were a bit frightening.
Other things to consider: the film was fast-paced, the story was unbelievably absurd, and the special effects were sometimes cheesy and sometimes good. The only flaw I found with "The Seventh Curse" (aside from everything else, depending on your point of view) is the Worm Tribe priest's voice. Yes, he sounds like a bitch.
Oh god, I loved "The Seventh Curse". Oh baby, I've seen this sucker legitimately 50 times and I can go for another 2,000,200 more times. Though I gave this film a 5-star rating, logically it's a 3 ½ star rating. Its absurdity levels the likes of "Mighty Peking Man" or "Ninja: The Final Duel", but eh, whatever. BEST FILM EVER!!!!!!

Only HK could make something this weird, bad, good, cheesy, gross, awesome!!!!
Your right, logically this deserves 3 or 4 stars but this is far from a logical movie. This one really blew my mind and I enjoyed it a lot as I took the logical rating path where you rated on your personal love for its absurdity. Both are fair outlooks
Great film focusing on monkey kung fu, directed by and starring the great Liu Chia-Liang. This feature has a great supporting cast with the underrated Hsiao Hou, the beautiful Kara Hui, and Lo Lieh in a great villainous performance.
Liu Chia Liang is framed by local gangster Lo Lieh. His sister Kara Hui becomes Lieh's concubine in exchange for his freedom. Lieh also has Liu Chia Liang's hands crippled so revenge would be hard to follow. Lieh did not count on local roustabout Hsiao Hou becoming Liu's student and getting revenge for his master!
The action is good and there are many comedic moments showing that Hsiao Hou is a pretty good comedic actor. Great film and highly recommended for Liu Chia Liang fans. If you like this feature, I recommend you check out "Stroke Of Death". This is another great film focusing on monkey style and starring Tony Ching Siu-Tung and the always underrated Hau Chiu Sing!

The comedy, I could have done without. But it's still a great film!
It's a pleasure seeing Liu Chia Liang/Lau Kar Leung and Hsiao Hou strut their stuff. I'm not sure anyone else would seem so right doing this approach to Monkey Kung Fu.
Fatal Needles vs. Fatal Fists (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of my favorite independent Tawainese films. This one stars Wong Tao as a heroic officer of the law who, after suffering a great personal tragedy, can care less if he lives or dies. On top of this he swears off fighting! Unfortunately for him, circumstances bring him around to do battle with a white-haired, needle-wielding, villainous Chang-Yi!
Some action fans may be disappointed, as the movie is slow after a great opening due to plot developement; however the fight sequences are good and Wong Tao delivers a great acting performance. Look for a cameo by Lo Lieh, and view some of action choreographer Tommy Lee's Southern Mantis style, as he portrays Chang-Yi's right hand man. Recommended for old school lovers and Wong Tao fans!

Not a complete zero, granted the special effects sucked sometimes but Aaliyah and the whole cast did a good job with the material at hand.
The firehose fight. Keep this thought in mind should you decide to purchase this crap nugget. This movie is just weak. The acting and dialog in this flick are horrid and as many others have stated the x-ray scenes were more than unnecessary. But what about the fight scenes? Balls. Everytime they start to get going and pick up some momentum they just bottom out culminating with some ridiculous, physics- defying line work or previously noted x-ray sequences. Russell Wong was actually one of the best things about this flick but even he wasn't utilized to his full potential. That cat needs more work. The redeeming trait of this sad little crap burger is, as I previously mentioned, a fight scene in which Jet Li takes on a bunch of guys while he is wielding a firehose using a Wushu rope dart style. I don't want to say that this scene makes the whole crappy flick worth it but kinda'. If you are a Jet Li completist then you will have to get this movie for this scene alone. I did. It honestly pains me any time that I have to give a Jet film under 3 stars but it happens (rarely). Half a star for Russell Wong, half a star for Aaliyah being drop dead gorgeous and one full star for the firehose fight scene. Thanks for reading and stay into trouble.
Yeah, this is truly bad! And I love when movies are supposed to be set in L.A. or New York, and you can see the beautiful Canadian mountain ranges of Vancouver in the background. Rumblein the Bronx, im' looking at you too!
The Iron Fisted Monk (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I'd really rate this @ 3.75. The tone in this movie is certainly more serious than most Sammo films. No question the fight choreography from Sammo and Chan Sing are top notch. However, the plot is rather vanilla where the Manchus are the usual bullies trying to take over a territory/factory. I dont think the rape scene everybody talks about is out of place or inappropriate. It's just conveying the hate and desire for revenge much stronger. For Sammo and Chan Sing fans this deserves a view, but I wouldn't consider this a must-have.

sooooo, how does one make rape scenes subtle? Essh.
The western reaction to Hong Kong cinema's justaposition of rape and light comedy is an ongoing problem. I like this about as much as does Jay Lee, but understand what he feels. Not to be smug, eastern film ethics are sometimes problematic to the west.
I disagree with Jay Lee because the rape scene was not the essense of this film. but it was essential to the storyline with the whole Mongal vs. ming plot. You can not deny the fight scene and I think we should stick to the point only. But I see you Ol'!
This is a must have in my book. And it's not the rape scene as such, it's the rape scene intercut with smarmy comedy that I personally have a problem with. Plus, im not a fan of rape scenes at all, and it could have been done in a more subtle way.
