My Sassy Girl [2001] (product link)
Comedy / Romance

"My Sassy Girl" is amazing. The comedy and the melodrama that comes near the end are on point. When the drama starts kicking up, you wonder if that's who's on Leno tonight, but then the plot goes somewhere unexpectedly that makes what happened previously even better. It's reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock movies where you wonder if it's possible to cut out some of the boring parts, but then you realize that it won't gel the same if they did. From the crazy girl antics to the whipping boy who just takes it, guys and girls can both appreciate it. Vomit jokes, guys in high heels, bad dancing, this movie has it all. Anyone who doesn't alternately cry and laugh throughout this movie is probably dead inside.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Five [6-Disc Box Set] (product link)
TV Shows/Movies / Fantasy

One of the best seasons story and epic-wise. As usual the plot lines run from the serious (Buffy's mom dies) to the tongue-in-cheek funny (Buffybot). The series never takes itself seriously despite having this season's final boss being a girl who sucks the life force out of victims through their skulls (Clare Kramer of "Bring it On" fame) but still has time to pick out pretty dresses. Much of the enjoyment of the show is credited to Sarah Michelle Gellar's portrayal of a girl who is chosen to save the world from vampires and other related demons, while at the same time trying to live a normal life.

Some of the best episodes include Triangle which has the classic line, "That's insane troll logic." Crush has Spike completely falling for Buffy. Spiral has the gang being chased by knights on horses while they're in a fortified RV. The Gift has Buffy making the hard choice between saving the world or sacrificing her sister. There are some bad moments too. The first slayer mythology seems more hackney than epic. The reintroduction of Riley even for a few episodes brought back bad memories of season four. Dawn's ultimate purpose isn't revealed until the last episodes, and even now it is hard to remember why Glory was so bent on having her. Spike's obsession of Buffy is reminiscent of "Swimfan" at times.

If you are a newcomer to the series, it is best to start from the first season, although you can start here and work backwards to understand the inside jokes and connections to throwaway lines said seasons ago. After this the seasons got worse and worse. They tried to jazz it up with more special effects and graphic lesbian make-out scenes, but those totally miss out on the spirit of the show which was embodied perfectly in this season. Sometimes a show can be enjoyed by the whole family, and people who aren't usually fans of sci-fi end up sticking around until the end.

My Lovely Sam-Soon (product link)
TV Shows/Movies / Drama

"My Lovely Sam-Soon" is awesome, not as good as some people say, but it is awfully good. The daydreaming sequences do go away after the first few episodes, they're missed but the series is more than that. I'm almost assured that some jokes are really lost without having lived in Korea, i.e. why Sam Soon is such a bad name. But there are also lessons about Korea learned, such as for blind dates, it's ok to meet in a hotel lobby for drinks. Actresses are very pretty, actors are so good looking you want to punch them, low life threatening diseases count, comedy that doesn't rely on being wacky for sake of being weird, people being thrust into unknown situations with unknown consequences. You'll constantly see a character face something and wonder how you'll act if that was you, because there's a connection to the audience. Other shows I wouldn't even care. There are some lulls because you can't believe how some people behave or some turns are too convenient or unbelievable, but it does cause you stick with it because you know it'll right itself later on.

Summer Time Machine Blues (product link)
Comedy / Fantasy

Despite the jokes that worked but wasn't gut busting funny, this movie delivers on its promise of time travel and comedy.

The funniest movies always have the simplest; some might call it the dumbest premise. Here, a sci-fi club wants to go back in time to find a remote control to fix the AC. One little action like that has so many unpredictable consequences. The first ten minutes has a sloppier editing job than "All I Wanna Do" but then it corrects itself by showing that this was a result of a lot of time travel within the same place and time. A ton of side characters and places brought up for no reason are also explained in this manner; people disappear and reappear and it all makes sense due to this excuse crazily enough. This movie ties up more loose ends than a sandwich shop which wraps it's goodies in ribbons.

Halfway through, the movie starts questioning fate, predetermination and "A Brief History of Time," but it is done so effectively you will not end up dazed. There is even an in-class discussion about the possibilities about time travel, but surprisingly that does not stop the movie in its track the way Halle Berry's pool scene did in "Swordfish." The characters play wonderfully off each other because you can believe their motives for going back in time and that they are friends with each other.

Udon (product link)
Comedy / Drama

It is ironic that the guy who was ridiculed as “udon boy” growing up and is what he’s been trying to run away from all his life is what he does once he finds a new job, seeking unknown udon shops.

Just like in "Seven Samurai," there should be an intermission. The perfect place is right near the one hour mark where all three of the main characters talk about the future when the udon craze dies down. This is where a dramatic shift occurs. You can tell because reporter girl stops wearing her glasses. The lightheartedness of the previous section stops although the montages never end and the real point of the film is presented. The first half will have you craving udon the way "Grosse Point" craved viewership. By the imaginary intermission time you will more stuffed from imaginary udon than the “The Bourne Ultimatum” was stuffed with unnecessary cuts.

In a way udon is given more credit than it deserves, but that seems to be the film’s mission. It is amazing the different types of udon there is and the way people eat it. The people gazing aspect of eating at restaurants is intensified by how freakish some people are and the quirky restaurants which serve them. The main characters are fun too; they are as joyful as Gap commercials in their pursuit of udon. It seemed like no one ate anything other than that in the whole movie.

Marriage Is A Crazy Thing (product link)
Drama / Romance

“Marriage is a Crazy Thing” could be the definitive cheating movie. In it we see the motivations that cause people to cheat and how a relationship could be so toxic to both parties that they would continue even though there cannot be a happy outcome. The ending will just floor you the way "Christmas in August" did.

It is hard to say who started the cheating premise. Obviously the guy and girl are wrong, but which one is more at fault? Along the way you get to see a lot of some-what boring getting it on scenes in different locations. What is weird is that only one of them has Um Jung-Hwa showing some flesh, as if to assert authority to the audience that she is calling the shots. Along the way Um takes photos of them together in imaginary husband and wife type of settings which the guy doesn't like at all. They even go shopping and take trips together. All of her actions make it seem like she wants to get caught, while at the same time not hoping for it. She is crazy enough to handle two relationships.

In the end there is a throwaway line where you realize the girl's lies might be bigger than the affair itself. Everyone has a point in their relationship where they go, "What if" and some might have even taken it further. This movie makes you believe that it can work while scaring you away from it at the same time.

Scoutman (product link)
Drama / Romance

If you felt that "Samaria" could have talked some more about teenage prostitutes instead of branching off into two other stories, then here goes the missing chapter. A teen couple runs away from home and needs money. The guy who is good at flirting with girls is offered a job by an AV talent scout company. His girlfriend gets involved in a girl passing out party fliers that are not really party fliers but coded messages for trick services.

Not for the squeamish. You get to see the different fetishes of people in Japan, besides the whole underage girl sex services aspect. My favorite would have to be the guy who got off on pre-chewed schoolgirl gum. This also shows the normal plotting of an AV actress. When she is younger, she is in demand and can choose whatever role. When she is older she gets the less favorable roles which also happen to pay less. There is one scene before the shooting is about to commence that shows the first-time actress upbeat about the whole deal, but starts crying before they get it on. Watching this movie makes you review your feelings about viewing smut after seeing everyone involved in the creation it. From the talent scouts to the casting director who thinks the casting couch is a prerequisite, to the AV girls working at brothels to pad their income.

For people who work in sales, you get to see the ultimate sales pitch when the talent scouts hustle on the busy Tokyo streets; when one girl says no, they quickly hone onto the next potential commission until one says yes. Surprisingly some girls fall for this because of the excitement and quick cash. The guys feel guilty but after a while they get over it because it is just a job and they are only providing a service. The girls get over this by shopping and having more sex. At the end there is the ultimate taboo you see coming half-way that will stop the whole movie; it made me feel like the time I yelled at Brad Pitt not to do it at the end of "Se7en." This movie is so depressing but interesting at the same time. Plenty of nudity, but it is of the vulnerable kind if you are into that.

Elva Live 2002 Karaoke (product link)
Musical

Couldn't expect more from a concert. Elva Hsiao sings in Mandarin and dances like a maniac on the floor and she's dancing like she never danced before. If the only songs you know from her are "Cappuccino" and "And I Know," you will be pleasantly surprised that she has more than that in her catalog. This concert contains the predictable mix of high-tempo songs in the beginning and end with some ballads (not really her strong suit) in the middle. One weird moment is when she has a dramatic pause to stop and sing "I Believe," the theme song from "My Sassy Girl." Granted she is not a great singer, but in concert form she is a great entertainer. Lots of costume changes and energetic background dancers that will make you kick off your Sunday shoes.

Otakus In Love (product link)
Drama / Romance

This movie is near "My Sassy Girl" territory in terms of enjoyment. Unlike other romance comedies where the slightly dumpy guy gets the hot girl, the twist this time is that the hot girl and dumpy guy are manga freaks which sets them away from the outside world. This movie feels like it was written from a guy's point of view. The girl is the aggressive pursuer while the guy is the unwilling participant. Manga plays a major role in this movie. If you don't get fandom, conventions and cosplay, it won't leave you out of the loop but it will help to have some background in it. The girl is a part-time manga writer while the guy is a full-time manga creator. However his medium is through rocks. No one is supposed to get what it means but it's so funny because he keeps hoping that one day people will his work instead of viewing it as a half-completed garden diorama.

No one is normal in this movie. Everyone has so many flaws that they seem normal in comparison. Funny scenes involve the initial cosplaying episode in her apartment; the anime convention and the final scene in the convention center that will equal parts break your heart and make you laugh. This movie is as colorful as "Nana" but with an actual story and characters that are fun to watch onscreen.

Girl Boss Guerilla (product link)
Crime / Action/Adventure

"Girl Boss Guerilla" is an awesome movie. The best of the Pinky Violence series. You learn lessons never taught in history books. Apparently in the 70's, girls who rode motorcycles never wore bras, I never knew that. It does perform a delicate dance of taking itself seriously while delivering the expected girl fights that you know will inevitably end up with shirts torn off. The violence is fun, believable and seems to fit in their girl gang world. The characters are developed enough so when they're threatened or harmed you either feel remorse or say, "That's right." To gauge whether you're in the audience for this type of movie through a rather trivial scene, when the main boss stoops down, puts her hand out to introduce herself to a rival boss like she's shaking hands with a cat and you think that's the coolest thing ever, then this movie is for you.

Spooky Encounters (product link)
Ghost / Martial Arts

"Spooky Encounters" has better vampire sequences than the original "Mr. Vampire" in creepiness and humor. The kung fu is nicely done as usual although the ending is a little bit over the top like in "Boyz in the Hood" when the main guy starts punching the air because he has so much anger he doesn't know what to do with it. The jokes are pretty good in kung fu terms, but bad in sketch value. Overall entertaining and would definitely be more popular with a catchier title.

A Romance Of Their Own (product link)
Drama / Romance

Sure "A Romance Of Their Own" is probably the first teen romance movie which features fighting scenes, but it has around the same amount as "Friend (2001)" which in hindsight didn't really have that many. In both movies the fights were memorable but there were not a lot of cans of whoop ass being opened.

This is a love story about a girl torn between her boyfriend and her brother she hasn't seen since she was a child. Crackles with more incestuous heat than Spike Lee filming his sister's love scene in "Mo' Better Blues." The boyfriend is envious of the time she spends with her brother, while the brother doesn't think he is a good match. Who would be a better guy for her, he never says. Feelings get dragged and left hanging. Both guys are from opposing schools or gangs or maybe it is all the same. Tempers and cell phone misunderstandings arise.

After everything, it is surprisingly involving to the very clichéd end. You wonder who she will spend more time with and how it can possibly end after everything it has thrown at you. For that it works. There are some memorable scenes: the kiss in the cafe where a J song suddenly plays and everything is in slow motion, the beginning fight scene in the tunnel where school kids do jump kicks off walls and a rain scene which rivals the scene in “Degrassi TNG” season 2 where Sean waits for Emma under a tree after her mom’s wedding. Just don't expect a whole lot of fighting scenes.

WMC I-1: World Muay Thai Grand Prix 2007 (product link)
Martial Arts

The first two fights are weak lead-ins for the hot stuff following it. These fights all come down to moments, much like how they are replayed during fight intermissions. You will remember certain combos such as the "kick + backward punch" and my favorite moment when dude grabs other dude, throws him down to the mat but not before delivering a knee to his stomach.

Those moments are fleeting but its spontaneity is what makes Muay Thai so exciting to watch. The last match is sort of a let down, but seeing all the takedowns and knockouts is more exciting than in "Porky's" when the kids are crawling through the ventilation pipes. There is some dancing by some girls during a break that is as pointless as Puff Daddy speaking at the end of Notorious Big's "Big Poppa" song, but that is not really a flaw to some people because you also see girls in bikinis between matches. Not a lot of matches take place, maybe 6 or 8 with three rounds each but every one has some special moments, much like in "Stand by Me" where the kids sit around the campfire to hear the barfing story.

The event is held in Hong Kong, so all the commentary is spoken in Cantonese and the only time English subtitles pop up is during the recap of previous fights and the fighter's pre-interviews. The music is of the tradition Muay Thai kind and it only gets annoying and repetitive during the slow parts of a fight.

The Art Of Muay Thai (product link)
Documentary / Instructional

After watching this, you will believe that if someone were to run up on you with a knife to your back, you could swat the knife away while delivering a devastating elbow to one of three possible areas. It is that effective. However to get there you have to waddle through some boring history and tradition of Muay Thai. If you are a firm practitioner, it might help you out when you square up an opponent and appreciate the art form more, but for most people learning about the different punches and kicks is what this movie is all about. The instructor is old and his tone is flabby but he is still really quick. He does a series of moves that made me flinch back faster than the scene in "Stir of Echoes" when Kevin Bacon sat next to a ghost on his couch. He is also truthful and admits some moves are more flashy than effective to amp up the crowd. But even those leave the opponents lonelier than the night.

You get to learn the many different punches and kicks and how timing can turn their uses from evasion, to setup and attack. I never knew there were so many different ways an elbow can be used. Either through a backward swinging way, to the back of the head or through a frontal assault. Besides evading a knife attack, the real world demos include how to disarm a gun while delivering an elbow/ punch/ kick and the right times to use a flying kick. The recaps are great because it shows how certain moves just taught leads to a knockout and those matches look pretty brutal; they contain more blood than the beginning of "Carrie."

The Silver Knife (product link)
Comedy / Erotica

It doesn't go there like "Sex is Zero" but they are both enjoyable in the same manner. An uptight girl goes to college with a knife that her father tells her to use on anyone wanting to take her innocence before she is married. Good thing she has a room-mate who is more versed than her in that department. Sounds like "Anita" already. But it is not, no nudity is shown and comedy is used to cover up the awkward first time moments which occur to her and her group of friends.

This movie does for saran wrap and fried food what "Sex is Zero" did for egg sandwiches. Or what Kevin Smith did for trench coats and what "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" did for Windex. The main girl is kind of boring, but her cast of friends work; including the guy who can't get it on, the guy who wants to get it on, the bartender who always has a bowl of soup or concert tickets handy and the room-mate who acts like she is inexperienced in the "Marrying the Mafia" handclaps way. The end is pretty forced, but this is not so bad considering all the failed hookups and jokes preceeding it.

El Rey (product link)
Action/Adventure / Drama

Surprisingly a lot of lessons for the small business owner are inside this low budget but good movie. Some of them include: don't cut out your middlemen if they're doing a better job than you can, hire better help, don't ball out of control and buy a pool table. For some reason, lots of pool is played here. Whether it is to preface a drug deal or a favor, there is always the sound of pool balls’ crashing. This is even more evident in the last scene. Its inclusion and meaning are debatable, but it all adds to the mythology to the first drug cartel in Columbia.

There wasn't much violence, but watching the growth of a nobody to somebody is worth the ride. Of course all the violence is shown in the trailer. An easy comparison would be to "Scarface" but there isn't an equivalent of exciting monologues or scenes that can be restaged without losing its efficiency. One thing that bugged me is how they were able to reap so much profit. I can see how since they were the first ones slanging that they would be getting a heftier cut than the ones down the line, but El Rey seems so middle management to be affording his lifestyle.

The Godfathers Of Mondo [LE 3-Disc Set] (product link)
Documentary

Very interesting documentary about the two guys who made "Mondo Cane" and basically created their own genre. There are some topics they leave out: one guy's sex crimes are worse than the one discussed; and the admittance of the burning monk scene being fake is nice to finally hear, although you want them to admit that they set up more scenes than that. Not for the squeamish at all. You see a few animals and people's deaths over and over again. Some topics are over sensationalized as they admit and might have added to the fear of foreign culture some of their footage implies. At times their over-kudos to themselves feels like overkill, along with their constant annoyance at how current filmmakers hardly acknowledge the strides that they have made for them. Through it all you wonder if they filmed their subjects at just the right moment or if people decided to go overboard for the camera's sake.

The creators do not know how to keep the sickos from watching it solely for the death scenes because their movies were meant to be artistic pieces with some violence thrown in to show that the world is not a happy place. What is weird is how they don't seem shaken by what they have witnessed years ago, they are more bothered by the censorship, alterations of their films, and the slew of awful cannibal and Mondo everything else that came afterwards.

Jenny, Juno (product link)
Drama / Romance

Finally, a movie that is in support of teen pregnancy. This movie feels like such a schoolgirl's afternoon daydream that if the whole cast suddenly started singing about spaghetti, it wouldn't seem out of place.

Granted this is a romance comedy, so you see the guy doing things that would never happen in real life (tying the girl's shoes, answering all of her phone calls, not having eyes for other girls). And then there are some perfect moments that could only be scripted in a movie (a wedding in a school gym?). What's wild is how everyone is so okay with her raising a baby to term and not giving it up for adoption. The guy works extra hard, studies for a university and gets her food for her late night cravings. The girl has her sister and parents reluctantly going with it once they see she's set in her ways. An ass-whipping that's set to happen by the girl's parents onto the boy never occurs. With this type of absurdity, it helps make the movie's comedy easier to enjoy. In one scene they end up stranded on a fishing platform in the middle of a lake for a whole night. The guy tries to get the attention of a passing boat by lobbing his cell phone at it, only to watch it sink. And there's one nice scene in the park where they hide their kiss by holding up giant cotton candy funnels, only to realize everyone looking at them once they're done. Little scenes like these help the messed up premise work in a PG rated setting.

Warning: there is one scene where it shows what happens to a baby during an abortion through the lens of a sonogram.

Kamikaze Girls (product link)
Comedy / Action/Adventure

To be truthful nothing really happens in this movie. Kyoko Fukada is a schoolgirl who likes gothic wear and Anna Tsuchiya is a biker chick. Both of them like the fantasy world that their clothing aspires to. If you're a fan of either one, that should be enough. The only plotline would be Anna wanting Kyoko to stitch her up some rad clothing. Anna does this as an excuse to spend time with her although they both don't want to admit that due to their opposite worlds. There is no violence, just visual gags, random jokes that work, lots of colorful motifs and a friendship that happens as a result of two loners finding out that they get along. This type of friendship wouldn't likely work if they only hung around their respective cliques due to the decreasing individuality once you hang around people who dress the same when the whole purpose is to be different. A good movie with minimal dialogue, colorful clothing, and enough weirdness to bring a smile to your face.

Red Room (product link)
Horror / Thriller

Not as disturbing as "All Night Long" but just as effective. Although the whole movie takes place inside a room, claustrophobia isn't used to scare the audience. All the horror is setup on the premise of making the other people tap out. The characters don't seem to be out to hurt people (unlike "Hostel"), they just want to win the prize with the least damage afflicted--at least initially. To list the offenses which occur is to take away from the whole suspense of the movie. From the second the tool box is revealed to contain a screwdriver and a blow dryer, you know something awful is about to go down.

The torture scenes were really effective because the film seems really low budget, so it feels like it could turn into a real life snuff movie anytime. The way the game was played felt like "Truth or Dare" without the truth, which adds a comical touch until the brutality sets in. You won't be horribly scarred from this, but you will come out shaken--and probably feel like watching "Audition" again.

The War Of Flowers (product link)
Drama / Crime

Finally, a gambling movie that works. Not having an understanding of the Korean card game Hwatoo holds back a bit on the total enjoyment. I didn't understand what an 8 or a 9 score meant; but it seems that if I understood the rules some more, the movie could have gotten a 1/2-star upgrade--or maybe be docked 1/2 a star for not being accurate. Either way the movie deals with people whose personalities lend themselves to professional gambling. All their relationships are toxic to each other, yet that's what makes them so ideal for the job. There were more than a few scenes that were reminiscent of "The Grifters" that actually didn't detract from the movie. In fact they're upgrades to them. In one scene, instead of storing money under some carpet in the trunk of a car, dude has a complete safe there.

Overall the movie was pretty long at a bit more than two hours, there was some unexpected violence and nudity, and it doesn't glorify gamblers as much as make them out to be conmen; but it is in good fun.

Boy Eats Girl (product link)
Horror / Comedy

"Boy Eats Girl's" first half hour is pretty boring as it builds up a backstory for the characters, but once the main character dies accidentally and is brought back as a zombie who doesn't act like a typical zombie, ala "My Boyfriend's Back," that's when the film gets into gear. As in all horror movies, don't get too attached to any character because you don't know when they might die. The zombie deaths and the actors reaction to them make it hilarious. There are some scary scenes, but the humor outweigh their plights. Blood and killing is scattered all over the movie but to get to the money shot, find the chapter where a gang of zombies are in the front yard and someone has conveniently left a tree trimmer that doubles as a zombie dispatcher. Good times for all who liked Peter Jackson's earlier gore movies and "Shaun of the Dead".

He Was Cool (product link)
Comedy / Romance

In "He Was Cool", what's amazing is how accurate its depiction of how a girl can sap your strength is. During the first half, the cool guy, Ji Eun-Sung, is ordering Ye-Won around, and she grudgingly allows it. Then he has a transformation when he gets wounded in a fight; later there's an explanation about why he never allows people to become close to him. The first half will test your cuteness tolerance. You start wondering whether the film could work better if it toned downed the overwhelming puppy love aspect; and when it does, you wonder why it can't be funny again. The funny scenes in the beginning make it all worthwhile.

Overall it's pretty good, not remarkable, but watchable. It accomplishes what it sets out to be: an average romance comedy of two characters who don't particularly like each other but end up doing exactly that. Like "My Fair Lady".

King Gambler (product link)
Action/Adventure / Crime

In "King of Gamblers", gambling takes up one third of the movie with con men tricking con games in the rest. Somehow it all works to be a nice diverting adventure. After a while, it makes you suspicious about how anyone can plan anything so well, predicting the other person's move and countermove. One intentional scene of hilarity is a woman with her arm up in bed allowing you see a jungle bush of armpit hair. Not as much kung fu and gambling tricks as shown in the trailer, but still a pretty well made movie. The thrill of gambling sharks playing each other really keeps you guessing on how it'll end. Of course the crosses and double crosses help keep up ratcheting the gambling scenes in a spy thriller sort of way. Good movie for gamblers or people who love playing elaborate pranks on people.

Drift 3 (product link)
Action/Adventure / Drama

Surprisingly good considering the previous movies in the series. This one kicks off with a whole new story and new characters. The beginning shows two school kids watching a drifting practice round and that inspires them to be mountain racers. How they form that connection is told in flashbacks. The neatest flashback is when one of them races an old nemesis in the form of a black car driven by a girl. The racing is sped up a bit, but not to the ridiculous level of part two, it actually seems like the cars were drifting pretty well, one of them at least in every race.

The race match ups are exciting. Miata versus anything and MRS versus anything, not just the regular Silvia S13 and S14 battles. I don’t want to give away the ending, but it has to contain the coolest reveal in a car movie since the last scene in “Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo Drift.”

Rough (product link)
Romance / Drama

Surprisingly enjoyable and fun until the second half, which doesn't continue its hit streak but still glides nicely towards the finish. It does not matter if you have never enjoyed swimming or high diving. If you do like to watch the tribulations of teenagers including girls who initially doesn't like a boy but ends up liking him only to be torn between him and another guy who is exactly like him but richer, then this is nothing but a good time and it doesn't get better than this.

Most of this takes place in a summer school or a boarding camp for athletes who are skilled in aquatic sports. So you have an nice mix of swimmers and divers. Plus the fact that they are all teenagers and it is a coed dorm, it gives an excuse for the cast to be in swimming attire most of the time.

A girl passes a guy after swimming practice and she calls him a murderer. We are stunned and can't wait to find out more to this story. It turns out that their grandparents ran competing candy shops and her grandfather died as result of losing his business; in high school reasoning, this makes her grandson responsible. This all does not matter really because they go on dates and both are smitten with each other; until another guy shows up. He is everything that candy shop guy isn't: older, richer, drives a BMW, holds the country's (not just region or state’s) current swimming record and the girl has had a crush on him longer. What is candy shop guy to do but to attempt to break rich guy's record to prove to the girl that he is the better guy.

But not before rich guy gets into a car accident and it is unlikely he will walk much less swim. Don't be sad because he does become well again and it is only a matter of time until the ultimate showdown match with the prize being the record, a magazine feature article and possibly helping the girl narrow down her choice of suitors. The story sounds shallow and it is throughout but something about the J-pop tunes and the way the characters throw themselves into their roles makes this as much fun as watching Ashley Tisdale ham it up in "High School Musical."

Pretty Maid Cafe (product link)
Comedy / Erotica

Did not expect this movie to become so pervy. Seemed like any other movie where a guy asks out a waitress on a date and the girl accepts, such as in "Office Space" where Ron Livingston asked out Jennifer Aniston. This was not like that at all. Everything seemed normal until we see the "Pretty Maid Cafe" waitress chick take a bath in some murky and ocean like water. What type of bath shampoo was she using to cause such a reaction? Then the algae colored water made sense, it was to blur out the nudity. And also to show off her love of fishing by having fish toys in the bath tub with her.

What sets off the naughty meter is when he fantasizes about her playing the drums. It starts off innocently with her banging the drums in her room, and then it slowly becomes a strip tease where seemingly with each hit of the drums, some article of clothing comes off until it is just some stickers covering her parts. Which is all the nudity you get to see in the whole movie except for another pre-shower scene where her bare behind is on display. Even more weird is when you consider that all the times the guy sees the girl, she is wearing a lot of clothing; in the cafe, her maid uniform has a mile's worth of ribbon and on their fishing date she has an anorak like the guy from "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

In-between there is a story about the guy awkwardly asking the waitress he gets massages from in the backroom out on a date. She goes on one date with him; however there is another patron at the cafe who is jealous of the time he spends with her. Not surprisingly, stalker look-a-like dude actually is a stalker and it is up to nerd number one to save her when he goes berserk after nerd guy posts details of their date on an internet forum. The plot is simple and there is enough talking to move the story. The perverts did not seem ashamed to be seen at the cafe and the waitresses acted as if their jobs were normal. Your total enjoyment depends on how cute you find the main actress.

Two Cops (product link)
Action/Adventure / Comedy

Classic comedy that does not rely on poop jokes. It starts off with a corrupt cop meeting a rookie cop who is really vigilant about not breaking the policeman's code. Guess what ensues? What is different about this movie from every other cop movie is that the rookie quickly becomes as corrupt as Sarah Jessica Parker's original hair color and the original corrupt cop wants to set limits on the rules being broken. Their quick about-faces are funny in how easily the citizens accept the cops’ petty larceny and how some criminals are actually buddies with them.

It becomes serious later on when one cop dabbles in drugs that are above the tiny crimes that they are "allowed" to commit while on duty. This could bring up a set of ethics questions about how much of the unwritten rules apply to one person while not to another. Instead this movie turns everything into comedy. Criminals beaten up during interrogations is as naturally funny as sitcom jokes about mother-in-laws because it is so easily relatable. Everyone has a story where they felt powerless by a cop exercising their will, not in the Matt Dillon "Crash" way, but in general instances where the cop overstepped their boundaries. This movie lets the audience watch the cops do it while not feeling guilty. After a while the continual law breaking becomes tiring and not funny, but when they work, they are give off a nice giggle.

Jackie Chan The Legend Hero [Karaoke] (product link)
Musical

This collection is beyond weird. There is one concert clip but mostly this contains music videos of him singing in Mandarin. He does not have great range, but the C-pop formulaic production that made Grasshopper a tolerable boy-band works wonders here. This collection contains great nostalgic value for people of early 1990's HK pop culture because a lot of HK stars appear to either sing or act in his videos, including George Lam (whose moustache could not handle HK's handover to China) and Maggie Cheung before she was considered a serious actress. The music video settings are exactly what you would expect to happen in a karaoke video: a girl looks sad, a guy is singing, it is always Autumn, there might be a train or two. Jackie does not do any extra kung fu for his videos, it would not fit in with his songs of love and heartbreak, instead he saves it for his background dancers. The only kung fu of his comes from the clips of "Drunken Master 2" set to its theme song. From a musical standpoint, Jackie gets by without hitting the wrong notes or straining himself. In a way it is not really singing but his voice goes up and down with the music on the same pitch. Which is fine because all he sings are ballads that become repetitive in the "TV Carnage" or "Mind's Eye" way; you've watched enough for one sitting but you soldier on because you have to know what is coming up next. Despite all this, you can see why his tea in the parlor makes the ladies holler.

The Flying Guillotine (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

On a scale of Flying Guillotine movies, this movie would rank between "Fatal Flying Guillotine" and "Flying Guillotine 2", with "Master of the Flying Guillotine" being the best. The first part of the movie has an insane amount of decapitations as it shows the creation and implementation of the device. Be warned, there is one training scene where to show how effective the weapon is, it is used on a dog. That was as cold as ice. Halfway through, the movie slows to a crawl as one guy defects and is living a normal life--or as much as a fugitive can. He gets found, of course, and the killings resume. Your total enjoyment hinges on how you feel about the guillotine. If you don't think it is the coolest weapon ever, you are not going to like this movie one bit. However, if you think it would be pretty sweet to use this glorified lantern, then this might be for you. There is some regular kung fu done in the final fight scenes; it's not epic, but well made. Same could be said for the whole movie.

Something To Scream About [4-Movie Set] (product link)
Documentary / Horror

Lots of talking heads and brief movie clips in this documentary. Some of the girls interviewed give neat insight into how they got into the horror industry and how they will never win an Oscar for what they do. Debbie Rochon of "Tromeo & Juliet" fame comes off as the nicest person. She has kind of resigned herself to a life of playing a scream queen in a DV movie made in someone's backyard and attending horror conventions. It is sad and admirable at the same time. Halfway through, the novelty wears off, the topics start to blend together, and the film loses its sense of direction. Brinke Stevens does not really do much here, just brings up topics and shows the actresses' response like the way Elvira would pop up with witty remarks during a movie she's presenting.

Operation Makeover (product link)
Romance / Comedy

This movie is similar to the first "Back to the Future" movie, but besides breaking many of the laws set in that movie (don't meet your younger self, don't bring anything from the future that can alter history) this movie is pretty middle of the road entertaining. The only annoyance would be the mole on Na Jung-Ju's nose and how no one learns anything despite having a time-traveling laptop. It is somewhat hard to care about the plot because basically Jung-Ju goes back in time to set up her younger self up with Oh Tae-hoon who is now a millionaire. The problem is that Jung-ju forgets how strong willed her younger self is and how she's infatuated with Jo Hani, who in the future breaks her heart and is a famous singer on top of that. Naturally the future wants to protect the past, but sometimes people have to make mistakes to grow up. This being a time travelling movie, there are science inconsistencies but you'll soon forget them because the movie sure does. A lot of first love jokes are hampered by a cynical, jaded outlook due to the fact that you already know the end result. Anyone brought up on early 1990's Korean pop culture will find the inside jokes about Jinro Soju and D.E.U.X mildly funny. Everyone else will see the jokes coming but don't know how much to laugh.

The makeover in the title refers to how Jung-ju tries her hardest to make Tae-hoon not be viewed as just a friend, but ends up with bad Cyrano de Bergerac jokes, inadvertant boob grabs and more kpop jokes circa 1994. Despite all this the movie entertains but it's not going to leave an impression that will make you recommend it to others.

200 Pounds Beauty (product link)
Comedy / Romance

Happily this is a Korean movie where no one has a terminal disease. However you get a chubby girl who, through the magic of plastic surgery, becomes skinny, attractive and lands a record deal. Kim A-jung plays the main character Hanna in a fat suit for the first twenty minutes that brings some really cringe worthy fat jokes. She's a part time phone sex operator and an unseen vocalist for a popular singer. A result of which comes some jabs at the Korean music scene that are on target but also some are soft lobs that you think will be a setup for a harder swing, but the hit never comes.

The problem with this and the similar but less funny "Love on a Diet" is that it gives people that the idea that the world is ok with fat people but would like them more if they were a bit skinnier. Hanna's transformation takes a year with complications but the end results are the desired ones albeit with humorous results. While in a makeout session, she remembers the doctor's warning that no one can touch any of her enhanced figure or else they will know of her surgery. So basically the makeout session ends right there because nothing was left untouched. To back up the story there is a strong kpop soundtrack that doesn't overwhelm but rather enhances scenes. It wasn't until halfway that I noticed that this movie is pretty hollow because the music was regulating the tempo so well. The "Maria" song Hanna sings will really stick in your head for a while.

Entertaining at points but the whole "plastic surgery and not being fat is ok" premise really stops it from receiving a higher grade.

Outlaw Brothers (product link)
Crime / Action/Adventure

Pretty entertaining car stealing movie. As usual, the car chase scenes slack off after midway, but unlike "Offtrack", "Highway Man", or "Full Throttle", what replaces the racing isn't a contrived love story but some kung fu. Pretty good use of it too. I lost count on the amount of cans of ass-whoopings opened during the whole film. A warning: if you're sensitive towards animal suffering, skip the the warehouse scene, no good can come out of it.

Freeway Speedway 6 (product link)
Action/Adventure

"Freeway Speedway 6" contains the most spectacular racing scenes of the whole series. After awhile the scenes meld together in your memory, but the three way race of the Nissan Skyline and Nissan 300zx with the Toyota Supra keeping watch just stays there. The behavior of the characters make it even more bizarre, betting for slips of a MR2 and Skyline, a woman climbing into the backseat of a Supra through the trunk among others. Features the fakest in-car footage of the whole series. Each movie in the series with the exception of the first one has the "Star Trek" shake, where the camera will shake and the actor will shake to give the illusion of movement. Anticipating them is a nightmare. Like the rest, the music comes and goes during racing which is just weird. Nice way to wrap up the series. They've already covered track, grip, drift, touge, freeway and drag racing and any new movie would just feel like a retread like what happened to every "Police Academy" movie made after part three.

Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom (product link)
Crime / Action/Adventure

After watching "Girl Boss Guerilla" first, "Terrifying Girls' High School" fails to reach the same levels. It's entertaining in bits, but fails altogether. There are some genuinely interesting moments, but then sags, lets you look at girls in school-girl outfits without feeling guilty because they're older than high school girls, then more girl on girl violence. There's some plot to move things along but feels like excuses for different types of torture to occur, such lightbulbs and binge water drinking.

Gun Crazy 3: Traitors Rhapsody (product link)
Girls With Guns / Action/Adventure

"Gun Crazy 3" is a pretty entertaining picture as a whole. The series gets better each time in tiny increments in terms of action and story telling. This whole series can be seen as the equivalent of "Over The Top." In that movie, Sylvester Stallone is a regular truck driver, but during arm wrestling matches, when he turns his baseball cap backwards, it is on, it transforms him into a unbeatable arm wrestling competitor with intense concentration. For the "Gun Crazy" series substitute cap for gun and there you go. It teaches girls to have confidence in themselves and not rely on others to solve their problems, gun or no gun.

Challenge Of The Gamesters (product link)
Crime / Action/Adventure

Over the top should be applied to here, from the unexplained kung-fu, gun violence, silver backed killing playing cards, the theme from God of Gamblers or Shanghai Grand playing randomly and mahjong parlor tricks. The plot is largely unnecessary because it's really forgotten by the half hour mark until brought up again at the end. Between this and King of Gamblers, this movie would rate slightly lower since it was all over the place trying to please everyone or keep everyone tuned to what's going to happen next. One thing that bugged me is that some scenes look sped up as a result of the film not having enough frames in it, so that waiters and everyone else are unusually animated. Even slow motion scenes felt speed up due to this. Overall, it's a pretty entertaining movie despite have no core.

Drift [Japan] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Drama

Faster than you can say "God of Hands" it turns out that the reason why the main dude is such a good driver is due to his former career as a boxer which gives him quick steering moves. The races and why he feels like he needs to race every black colored car is exciting until halfway when it becomes more repetitive than Shu Qi waking up in the hospital in "The Eye 2." Former boxer guy is too intense and his idea of revenge is too skewed towards racing which makes sense from his point of view but leaves the audience as confused as Halle Berry winning an Oscar. The flashback moments feel forced but yet are crucial to understanding the guy's struggles.

It doesn't succeed much as a racing movie, the beginning and last race contains the most heart pumping moments. The rest are so blah that you don't care that a girl is his mechanic and he seemingly has no day job besides brooding over his vengeance. Slightly more believable than gangsters playing soccer as an alternative to fighting in “Mongkok Story.”

Desperately Seeking Seka (product link)
TV Shows/Movies / Documentary

"Desperately Seeking Seka" starts off nicely with the narrator looking for this porn actress he grew up watching. Neglecting the high turnover rate of performers in that industry, he sets out looking for the real story of what happened to her along the way interviewing people she worked with. Those industry people are interesting because they tell this story of Seka who had everything going for her and could not figure out why she would leave at the height of her popularity. To fill in these doubts they repeat rumors of how she married some rich guy and moved out to a farm somewhere. Wild stories to please their curiousity and to soothe their non-spoken belief that something bad has happened to her after all these years. It is interesting to hear these stories and watch vintage clips of her with big “Sopranos” hair and crazy "Purple Rain" makeup.

Until the middle part when the guy finally meets Seka at her house and all the fantasies are dashed much like in "Maid in Manhatten" when the rich guy finds out Jennifer Lopez was just pretending to be rich. That part was such a let down compared to the previous nostalgic view of the adult industry and how it was all better in the golden age. The narrator seemed to like the fantasy Seka more than the actual Seka, much like in "American Psycho" where Christian Bale flexed his muscles in front of a mirror for his own entertainment even when he was with those two hookers. That part is rather apparent when he visits Seka and the rooms are dim and she talks about her rather normal life after leaving the scene and the usual cases of what caused her departure. It is anti-climatic but it does tell the story of the industry through the journey of a search. There are some rather hardcore nudity scenes which are brief but are very telling.
