Possession [1981] (product link) Horror / Thriller One of the best Eurocult horror flicks ever! Isabelle Adjani is incredible. Zulawski's typical motifs are present--insanity, non-conformity, and quite a bit of violence. This is a film where you never know what's coming next. See it.
The Bollywood Horror Collection Vol. 2 [2-Disc Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller Two films at nearly five hours is awesome. Wonderfully atmospheric b-horror cinema. A tremendous amount of fun.
On The Edge (product link) Crime / Drama This is an excellent post-"Infernal Affairs" film. It has an interesting story about an undercover triad attempting to assimilate back into normal life. Nick Cheung and Anthony Wong are stellar. Tremendously underrated.
A Mob Story (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure This is a Cat. III WKW film. Believe it or not. Yau mixes subjective poses and unrequited love with hatchets to the face and other acts of violence. Decent acting from all involved.
The Washing Machine (product link) Horror / Thriller Perverse thriller from Deodato. Very stylish and engrossing story. Probably the sexiest film Deodato's ever filmed.
Live Like A Cop, Die Like A Man (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure One of the best Eurocrime films ever! Lovelock and Porel are cops who act more like thugs. They love the ladies and knocking people's teeth out! Really immoral and nasty flick. Loved it!
Nightmare City (product link) Horror / Thriller Quite possibly one of the best Eurocult horror films of all time, in terms of fun. Hugo Stiglitz is totally unable to emote. The dialogue is quite often daft. However, this is a fast-moving, gory, action-filled horror tale that always entertains. Stelvio Cipriani provided a stellar soundtrack. Lenzi rarely shows this much enthusiasm in his horror films. See it.
Don't Play With Fire (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime This Tsui Hark film is an early masterpiece. He would never make a film like this again. Angry, brutal, violent, and creative. Also, occasionally funny. This one is a must-see for Hark fans, along with "Butterfly Murders" and "We're Going to Eat You".
New Manager Of The Sumo Club (product link) Action/Adventure / Comedy Very fun comedy about a young woman who gets caught sleeping with her professor and is coerced into being the new manager of the "sumo club". Like other Switchblade Pictures releases, this one has many a sexy scene. A real throwback to teen comedies of the 80s.
Tough Guys (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime A good time for peeps who like Blaxploitation and Eurocrime flicks. Lino Ventura and Isaac Hayes are bad dudes and bring a lot of charisma to their roles. Fred Williamson delivers a great performance. I only wish that he would have gotten more screen time. This is one of Duccio Tessari's more underappreciated flicks.
The Brood (product link) Horror / Thriller A Cronenberg classic. Oliver Reed is amazing. This story is highly creative and contains all of the trademark Cronenberg themes. Finale is pitch perfect. A must for horror fans.
Lethal Ninja [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Completely insane! This is a B-movie action film done to perfection about ninjas. Great stuff from Yau.
Cocktail (product link) Drama This is Yau doing WKW and doing WKW rather well. It shares a lot with films like "Fallen Angels" and "Chungking Express". One of the sweeter films in Yau's filmography. Recommended for WKW fans or people looking for another side of Yau.
Nachtblende (product link) Erotica / Drama This is Fabio Testi's best acting performance. Romy S. is wonderful as usual. Zulawski is a criminally underrated Eurocult filmmaker.
The Naked Sword (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Very sexy and stylish, low-budget pink film. The story and the execution are quite professional. Surprisingly a lot of fun.
Rule Number One (product link) Horror / Thriller Cheng, for once, is actually decent in this one. Tong is obviously talented behind the camera. His next film should be tops. The story is actually quite good and Yue gives a good performance. I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised by this one.
Vampire Buster (product link) Ghost / Comedy Jacky Cheung made a bunch of HK horror comedies in the late 80s. This is not one of the better ones. Certainly it's fun at times but not as good as, say, "Haunted Cop Shop".
Scorpion With Two Tails (product link) Horror / Thriller Not as stylish as Martino's gialli, but this is a good mystery, nonetheless. More atmospheric than overtly scary. Excellent score by Fabio Frizzi. For the Eurocult completist and curious.
Here Comes A Vampire (product link) Ghost / Comedy Very tired HK horror/comedy. The terrible burnt-in subs on the HK DVD by WideSight also didn't help. Unfortunately, no energy is captured at all during the filming of this one. Skip it.
Maid's Secret (product link) Erotica This is, for the most part, a fun dark comedy. There are some real creative bits mixed in with some sexy scenes. However, there is also a very degrading rape scene which really spoils the fun mood of the film and dampens the whole experience.
Tokyo Gore Police (product link) Action/Adventure / Horror Not much here, really. Seems to cover all of the bases of recent Japanese horror: over-the-top gore, comic-book villains, and a smoking-hot female out to bring them down. This one's been done about to death. Fun, though, if you're not familiar with the genre.
Land Of Death (product link) Horror / Thriller Ever seen "Predator"? Good, because Mattei did also. In fact, Mattei "borrows" heavily from McTiernan's film, instead substituting cannibals for aliens. It's fun, no doubt, and I do love Mattei. However, this carbon copy has none of the fun of Mattei's 80s output or even a more recent effort like "The Tomb". Only for diehard Mattei fans.
Chaos [2008] (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure This is a very conservative effort from Yau. The film doesn't hide its low-budget origins--really talky, overuse of the same sets, poorly lit, and has poor CGI. There was a lot to potentially love about this one.:) If Yau would have pushed the insanity factor, like some of his more recent works, then this one could have been epic.
Killer Bees (product link) Science Fiction / Thriller A film about young women camping and their sudden attack by killer bees. Virtually nothing exciting about this one. Very low-budget and very boring.
Il Mistero Di Lovecraft: Road To L. (product link) Horror / Thriller Skip this one. Lots of potential: mysterious life of H.P. Lovecraft, hidden letters, arcane rites in Italy... Flop. Wants to be like "Blair Witch Project" but doesn't even go near a scare, nor does it seem to want to.
