The Bare Footed Kid (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is a brilliant film which not only has some exciting fight sequences but a strong story with elements of drama, romance and characters you can really care about. The fight scenes are well staged and, while I'm not a fan of wire assisted action, here it is used sparingly and to good effect. The humour is subtle, which makes a nice change from the usual broad slapstick you find in martial arts movies; and the film builds to a dramatic and powerful ending.
A Moment Of Romance (product link) Romance / Action/Adventure This is a cool film. It opens with some great action sequences and there's a brutal fight at the end but don't expect action all the way as the core of the film is a tender love story in which a small time criminal and rich girl from a sheltered background fall in love. Considering that they meet when the criminal takes the girl hostage during a botched robbery their relationship might seem a bit unlikely but the two leads Andy Lau and Wu Chien Lien give convincing performances that make you believe in it and get you to care about the characters. Of course with disapproving parents on one side and murderous triads on the other things don't look too rosy for the couple. The film is stylishly shot and atmospherically lit and the ending is powerful and moving with a haunting final shot. A film well worth seeing.
The Avenging Quartet [DOUBLE FEATURE] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This film is okay but not great. The title and the picture on the DVD cover suggest a better film with the four leading ladies fighting alongside each other. However it turns out that two of them are the goodies and the other two are the baddies. The rambling plot concerning the search for a valuable painting is a bit poor but the fight scenes are good with Cynthia Khan and Moon Lee on top form. However a scene towards the end in which the heroine and her boyfriend are systematically beaten and abused by the bad guys is just gratuitously unpleasant. This is a film worth seeing for the impressive fighting ability of the four female leads but that's all.
