Guinea Pig Box Set [6-Movie Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller The best is "Flower Of Flesh And Blood": the effects are impressive, yet they are funnier than I expected.
MPD Psycho Story Vol. 1-6: The Complete Miniseries [4-Disc Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller Call me slow, but I needed to watch the whole series twice until I caught the whole idea and got familiar with the characters. But it was worth it. The story follows a serial killer with an artistic and technological touch on their killings--I loved the figurines they use to represent the murders, wish I could have one. I loved the song, too, creepy as hell, and the excellent special effects from Miike.
Death Note: The Last Name (product link) Horror / Mystery I got this for my nephew. Cool movie. The CGI devils look so fake, but they are cool. I also hated the Red Hot Chili Peppers' opening music. They were cool before "BloodSugarSexMagic". My nephew loved it.
Paprika [2006] (product link) Animation / Thriller Put together "The Interpretation of Dreams" by Sigmund Freud and the film "The Cell" and you will have an idea of what "Paprika" is about. I found "The Cell" much better, the animation is good, specially the moving parade. Enjoyable.
Subconscious Cruelty [2-Disc Deluxe Edition] (product link) Horror / Thriller I expected something really different, good effort but the shocking extreme images here are lame. I think these dudes were too young at the time of creating this film; on the comments they explained that due to low budget they took about five years to end the film. Not that good.
Salo (product link) Drama / Horror Excellent translation from the Marquis De Sade novel, captures the poetry and the feeling. Of course the book is better, yet the movie shocked me as I watched it.
The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (product link) Drama Very good movie, shows the extreme life of a kiddo that lives confused and abused between a junkie single mother and a Christian orthodox family. Full of love and deception.
The Mansion Of Madness [10-Movie Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller Great film, it looks a lot like "El Topo" from Jodorowsky. The director of photography is the same, I think, and also some of the "El Topo" actors worked in this movie.
Gozu (product link) Crime / Drama A Yakuza trip to the end of the rabbit hole. Great special effects. I found it boring at times, yet a great film, very reminiscent of the work of David Lynch.
Santa Sangre (product link) Horror / Thriller Very different from "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain", "Santa Sangre" goes beyond the wakening of the inner self and rather shows a usual psychological drama. I liked it a lot. If possible, get the book "La Danza De La Realidad" written by Jodorowsky. It will get you to understand the relationship of Fenix and his father, which Jodo quotes on the commentary [in the version I watched].
La Haine [10th Anniversary Edition] (product link) Drama / Crime Being out of the political and social Parisian context (I live in Mexico), I really cannot give an accurate review on the film. What I can say is that the movie is great, the storyline is something that not only Paris is suffering, and I can speak as a Mexican and say to all of you that we also suffer from police negligence--they are corrupt, plant drugs on you, and steal from you if you say the contrary. We also suffer from racism from "our own" people--we have the U.S. border, etc.
This is bringing me to a serious review, and that's not the point here. Watch the movie, enjoy it, and think. I truly recommend it. Great movie. The soundtrack is great.
The Holy Mountain [1973] (product link) Drama What to say about Jodorowsky's work? It is surreal, it opens your mind to levels that only your own personal experience will give sense to all the metaphors he tries to express in his films. It is a great film.
The Charles Bukowski Tapes [SE 2-Disc Set] (product link) Documentary I've never seen Bukowski interviewed on TV, so I really wanted to know how this excellent writer expressed himself on camera. Barbet did a really good job putting these interviews together, cheesy music after every segment did annoy the viewing.
Only recommended if you enjoy Bukowski literature and want to get to know the man himself.
Visitor Q (product link) Dark Comedy / Thriller "Visitor Q" has it all to shock and amaze. The story is clear: a dysfunctional family--which, in my point of view, represents all of the moral values fucked up by today's chaotic, non-sense, empty and yet modern society--come together thanks to a stranger who helps them to free the real demons that they have been repressing by "acting normal".
My closing for this excellent movie after viewing it: the righteous way to be is
represented by a nice and tasty gallon of milk. "Visitor Q" is the fire that will
heat this liquid, so fast you would not notice when the milk spilled--be warned,
the mess may not be to your liking.
Danger After Dark Collection [3-Disc Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller "The Suicide Club" is far the best movie in this package as the single edition was not available anymore. A great movie, impressive and with a particular critic to modern society.
The other two movies are good, worth getting the 3-disc collection.
Fantastic Planet (product link) Animation / Science Fiction This film has been one of my all time favorites. Maybe the animation is not as amazing as today, but it is a classic.
Noriko's Dinner Table (product link) Horror / Thriller Excellent film, I did love "Suicide Club" and I must see the prequel. It answers a lot of questions from the Suicide Circle. I wish i knew Japanese to understand the extras [on the Japanese DVD].
The Fernando Arrabal Collection [Numbered LE 3-Disc Box] (product link) Art / Drama Viva la Muerte is among the best films I have watched. There is a scene which is pure surreal, the one with the bull killed, it is so poetic--there are other movies which show animals killed in order to shock, like "Cannibal Holocaust", in order to give a continuation to the movie.
There are more great things about this movie, but this is one of the scenes that had impact on me for its beauty.
"I Will Walk Like A Crazy Horse" is good, not as much as "Viva la Muerte", yet with shocking images.
Finally, "The Guernica Tree" is based upon the attack at that place during the Spanish civil war in 1937.
Quay Brothers: The Short Films (1979-2003) [SE 2-Disc Set] (product link) Art The Quay Brothers are just amazing, and this compilation of their short films is awesome. Excellent puppet design and sets. Dark, surreal, and emotive. The movie "Frieda" also has a short film designed by them.
Lunacy (product link) Horror / Fantasy Absolutely great movie, what else to expect from Svankmajer's creativeness and surreal imagery. Now add to the mixture: 2 Poe's obscure stories and De Sade's perversion. Wow, blasphemy, insanity, sex, introversion, revolution, are a few words to describe this excellent movie, all with the artistic and emotive touch from the master. I really don't want to extend the review, it will be much better if you watch it and came with your own personal interpretation, and don't go nuts in the process.
Scarlet Diva (product link) Drama / Erotica Obsessive love story. If the storyline is based on Asia's own experiences, I wonder why a beautiful girl like Asia suffers this sad love story. Filmed on digital, this movie is a very entertaining movie, some strong scenes. Everything in tune to make this a great movie, I liked it a lot. The bad trip scene, wow, I can tell from my own experience that I uses to be in the same situation and she expressed it perfectly.
