Cool Dimension (product link)
Action/Adventure / Girls With Guns

Shiori (Yoko Mitsuya), Mika (Mitsuho Ohtani), and Junko (Mika Shigeizumi) are three female assassins who wear matching leather biker outfits and colored contacts. They all work for some shifty guy in a demolished building who has some sort of physical or psychological sway over them. Shiori's latest assignment finds her working undercover as a news reporter in order to track down her quarry and obtain some vital information from him. Unfortunately, there's a traitor in the ranks and the whole mission goes to hell.

Apart from the fact that the girls are very cute, this direct to video atrocity is terrible in every regard. The version I saw had no English subtitles so I couldn't figure out the details of the story, but the execution is so awful that I don't think it would have made a difference. The nonsensical title of the film just further supports my suspicions. The cinematography and editing are terrible, and on par with a low budget high school project. The action scenes are incredibly weak, and even more offensive in that the girls are all doubled by glaringly obvious stuntmen in drag. What's the point in making a female action film if the women aren't even featured in the action scenes? There are a couple of decent hits and some nice posturing here and there, but nothing that can redeem this incoherent mess. The actresses themselves are actually swimsuit models, and their delivery tends to be stiff and emotionally flat. However, it's hard to blame them given the material that they're working with. The digital visual effects are also extremely lame, and for the most part are completely unnecessary. Digital rain? What's the point if nothing looks wet? The physical effects don't fare any better, and bullet hits don't leave any physical evidence of their presence, forcing the viewer to pretend that someone or something just got shot. By far the most ridiculous effect is that when the girls stop and strike a pose, a small blast of air from off camera is blown in their faces to reposition any stray hairs. Completely absurd. It's best to just admire the box art and leave this one on the shelf.

Iron Monkey 2 [1996] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Terrible! No wonder Donnie Yen didn't want to make this film. This time, the Iron Monkey is back in 1930's China to foil some bad guys smuggling guns. Of course, Billy Chow shows up briefly at the end as the last hired thug to knock down. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Donnie Yen is always wonderful to watch, and the kid that plays his partner's son is a very good fighter, but totally lacking in charisma. There's also a really cute girl on hand to spruce things up a bit here and there. Good to very good fighting, but a serious chore to sit through.

Half A Loaf Of Kung Fu (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Another dreadful early Jackie Chan vehicle from Lo Wei. The film's title makes about as much sense as the film itself does. Jackie (with REALLY bad hair) is a bumpkin who's looking for a job. When he finally gets one, he gets in trouble and his boss ends up dead. While he's on the run, he learns kung fu from a beggar, and a cast of villains are slowly introduced. At the end of the film, Jackie and his friends take out all of the bad guys in an exhausting free for all, full of fascinating choreography and silly sight gags. Unfortunately, the film is dominated by painfully unfunny humor, including an atrocious five minute long opening credits sequence that could make you stop watching the film altogether. There are a couple of cute girls thrown in to catch your attention, but the entire film is tedious and a test of patience. If you want early Chan, watch "Young Master" or "Fearless Hyena" instead (they're practically interchangeable).

Spiritual Kung Fu (product link)

Tiresome 70's chop-socky silliness with some ghosts thrown in for laughs. However, towards the end we do get to see Jackie perform some nice staff and tonfa work as well as some Shaolin animal forms.

Tiger Over Wall [3-Disc Set] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Ugh. Ninety minutes of my life that I can never get back again. Apart from a dazzling kung fu finale between Philip Ko and Hwang Jang Lee, this is an excruciatingly bad movie.

A foreigner has lost his prized boxer dog, and the crooked Chinese police are looking for a scapegoat. The local townspeople suffer from countless injustices at the hands of the ruthless cops until the last twenty minutes of the film when kung fu prodigy Philip Ko gets pissed and decides to kill everybody on the police force.

The film is really a blazing action showcase for Ko, and he is in top form. His final fight with legendary kung fu villain Hwang Jang Lee is complex, hard hitting, and exhausting. Too bad the rest of the film sucks so bad. And as if the standard bad dubbing isn't bad enough already, whose brilliant idea was it to give Hwang Jang Lee the voice of a squeaky seventeen year old boy?!? Do yourself a favor and just skip to the end.

Mr. Vampire 2 (product link)
Horror / Ghost

A painfully stupid and tiresome film about a family of vampires that get unearthed and revived. A modern day vampire buster decended from the first movie, again played by Lam Ching Ying (the one eyebrowed priest), shows up to deal with the hopping undead. Moon Lee is quite cute when she finally shows up for her five minutes on screen and a bumbling Yuen Biao gets knocked around pretty well. We also have another live snake gall removal (even more realistic than in the first film) and a guy who puts a good sized alive-and-kicking frog in his mouth. Ew, gross.

Holy Weapon (product link)
Swordplay/Sword(s) / Comedy

Another good looking, amazingly stupid martial arts period adventure from Wong Jing. Someone needs to rein him in. A stellar and sexy cast, completely wasted by a horrible and degrading script. Some decent effects, but the fighting sequences are crippled by excessive quick cuts. Michelle Yeoh doesn't get to show off much, but she looks pretty good. An adorable Cheung Man really caught my eye as the cute and sexy bitchy Japanese Spider Ninja, but she doesn't get to show off much either. A shame. Maggie Cheung is always a welcome sight, and she plays a cute and bitchy princess running away from home. All seven of the girls team up to fight the nasty Japanese master villain played by Simon Yam. There's also the annoying Dicky Cheung (who played Goku in "Future Cops") and he's a major source of the idiocy in the film (do I need to mention that he has a talking penis?). If this film had concentrated on the girls fighting and dropped all of the incredibly unfunny humor (if they had let Ching Siu Tung or Yuen Woo Ping direct it for instance) it could have been a really good film.

Game Of Death (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Very bad stuff. Made after Bruce Lee's death, he only appears in the final 15 minutes of the film. His character for the rest of the movie is played by Bruce Le, and not very convincingly. Sammo Hung choreographed the non-Lee fight scenes and cameos as one of the onscreen fighters.

The Last Duel [1978] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Huh?!? This is easily one of the most incomprehensible films I've ever seen - so much so that I can't even write a coherent synopsis of it. To be honest, the only reason I picked this up was because Nora Miao's name was on the box, but I didn't even recognize her in the film. Either she's not in it, or she has aged considerably since the early 1970's.

Okay, let's see what we can put together... A man (let's call him Li) is accused of sleeping with the wife of legendary swordsman See Man Chelsey, so they have a duel. Li barely manages to escape with his life, only to get lost in the woods. There, he meets another fugitive along with a See Man Chelsey imposter, who kills himself in shame after being defeated by Li. Still looking for a place to hide, the other fugitive leads Li to Death Villa - a strange smoke filled village where everyone is dead(?) and speaks with an echo in their voice. Li manages to escape death by winning a human meat eating contest and beating up the general of Death Villa, but the inhabitants of Death Villa want to kill Li who they suspect of murdering the See Man Chelsey imposter in the forest. Fortunately he's saved by Mrs. Wah, the "bitch who kills men", but then they are both kidnapped by the leader of Death Villa. It turns out that Li is just being tested by the leader of Death Villa, and having passed all the tests he's now part of a mission to assassinate the leader of Wu Tang. But first, they must kill all of the unnecessary (dead?) people in Death Villa. (are you following all of this?!?) So Li and the Death Villa death squad go to Wu Tang, ambush the leader of the clan, and kill all of his guests. Or so it seems... Then comes the twist ending where everyone turns on the leader of Death Villa and the great mysterious plot gets reveals - sort of. The film ends on a freeze frame of Li and See Man Chelsey picking up their fight from the beginning of the film.

What a complete mess. The kung fu is fair to good, with lots of strange wire-work and bizarre sound effects. The story is inconceivably confusing and convoluted. I gave up trying to even understand what the characters were saying about ten minutes into the film - it might as well have been in a different language. And then there's the great opening sequence of See Man Chelsey and some other guy fighting in an unbelievably poor desert setting while the theme music from "Battlestar Galactica" (1978) is playing in the background. (you can even see the actors' shadows on the sky backdrops) And let's not forget the kung fu dwarf of Death Villa...

Kung Fu Zombie (product link)
Martial Arts / Ghost

Apart from Billy Chong's kung fu excellence, this is a tiresome low budget kung fu horror comedy. A criminal comes to town in order to kill Billy Chong over a past dispute. But instead of getting his own hands dirty, he hires a Taoist wizard to animate some zombies to do the job for him. The plan goes horribly awry, and the bad guy ends up getting killed in his own trap. This pisses off the villain's spirit and he forces the priest to reincarnate him - only they can't find a suitable body. Meanwhile, an undead fiend of sorts comes to town to kill Billy's father over some other past dispute. This is where all of Billy's kung fu training comes in handy, and he manages to kill the attacker. With this, the other bad guy finally has a body to use, but the reincarnation goes wrong and the corpse is reborn as a vampire. But not all is lost for the wandering spirit, because Billy's father dies shortly afterward and the spirit inhabits his body - a perfect way to get revenge against Billy! But Billy is too smart for the ghost and he ends up freeing his father's soul while also delivering kung fu justice to the powerful vampire. Whew! Oddly enough, this film uses music from "Moonraker" (1979) which is a little unsettling. Stupid, but watchable due to Billy Chong's strong presence and considerable martial arts skills.

Ultracop 2000 (product link)
Science Fiction / Action/Adventure

Unbelievably bad. Two aliens from Mars (a cop and a criminal) show up on Earth and catch the attention of a local police unit investigating arms smuggling. Philip Ko and Yukari Oshima are two of the officers trying to track down the aliens and are helped by a goofy scientist, a gay man with AIDS (who the aliens are terrified of), and an instructional tai-chi swordplay manual. Yes, it's worse than it sounds. (maybe it should have been titled "Ultracrap 2000" instead) The only semi-bright spots in the film are seeing Ms. Oshima run around in SWAT fatigues (she doesn't even have any good fights!) and some impressive, but brief, swordplay by Philip Ko. Not nearly enough to justify watching the film again - or in the first place.

The Inheritor Of Kung Fu [1981] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

First of all, let me point out that I have no idea what the name of this film is and that I'm taking a wild guess by calling it "Inheritor Of Kung Fu". Xenon Entertainment repackaged it as "Soul Collector", and through my research I managed to narrow it down to being either "Inheritor Of Kung Fu", "Heroic Ones", or "Hero At Border Region".

Regardless, this is a completely incomprehensible mess of kung fu nonsense, made barely watchable by having a decent twenty minute martial arts fighting finale. Ti Lung is a bumpkin who's been framed by his master for the disappearance of an important kung fu manuscript. While in exile, he teams up with pretty Chang Ling and together they exact their revenge while in search of the truth. There is so much nonsense in this film, I don't know where to begin. First, there's a crazy drunkard that lives in a cave who has three arms and three legs, and can teleport himself around. He teaches Ti Lung some kung fu in a matter of seconds, which he never uses again. Meanwhile, Ti Lung's master is learning from the secret kung fu manuscript, but decides to commit suicide by plunging a knife into his gut. Miraculously, he shows up again at the end of the film with his face covered in boils. Another unexplained drunkard with a horde of children shows up to tend to Ti Lung's wounds later in the film and he provides goofy comedic relief with tumbling tricks and camera mugging. Somewhere along the way, Ti Lung's pretty sister goes mad and spends her time in the water trying to catch fish with her bare hands. And out of that same water emerges a big white guy in a toga who does battle with Ti Lung in the final showdown. He eventually loses the battle when a bunch of children poke him in the butt with sharp sticks and blow bubbles in his face. What the hell?!? What else can I say? This film is just mind-boggling and dreadful to watch. It also features some of the worst sets ever made - even worse than the original "Star Trek" TV series. (but not as bad as Russ Meyer's "Wild Gals Of The Naked West" (1962) - that one takes the cake) For the most part, the kung fu is good and it's nice to see Ti Lung in action. You may want to consider just fast-forwarding to the end of the film to see him fight.

Flash Future Kung Fu (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

An early low budget futuristic film noir flick from Kirk Wong that's just weird and makes no sense (the lack of subtitles didn't help). From what I could tell, a neo-nazi drug-promoting martial arts school takes on a traditional martial arts school in a bizarre and decadent neon filled futuristic environment. Two cute evil chicks rape and kill a couple of the "good guys" and the rest of the film centers around the "good guys" avenging their school. Lackluster martial arts, with the exception of the final fight which looks pretty hardcore. Bizarre sets and camera angles give the film a claustrophobic "Logan's Run" type feel, and the arcade where the punks hang out is just too weird. Naked chicks, illicit drug use, floggings, and even choreographed torturing and murders take place at the club. Very little entertainment value - it's just too weird.

The Three Swordmen (product link)
Swordplay/Sword(s) / Comedy

What crap. Andy Lau, Brigitte Lin (playing a guy), and Tsui Kam Long are competing swordsmen in the world of martial arts. The entire thing is nonsensical, but it eventually turns out that there's a huge conspiracy taking place to ensure that one of the fighters is awarded the best in the world through treachery and betrayal. Often silly and actually had TOO much silly flying around and arm waving. Looks great and is full of gorgeous sets and beautiful women. It has a good soundtrack with a couple of silly songs and a couple of really nice moody tracks, but the majority of it was lifted straight from "Akira" (!!!).

Swordsman With An Umbrella (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Terrible! A young and arrogant fighter named Iron Umbrella is seeking revenge for the death of his parents and the defeat of his teacher. He naturally uses an umbrella for a weapon, and it even allows him to fly. A young girl and her troupe of girl friends continually save Iron Umbrella from getting killed, and plead with him to put down his umbrella and be merciful. But he won't listen. He just keeps killing and killing until everyone's dead. The girls are semi-attractive, but the fighting is lackluster and uninspired... Pretty much a complete waste of time.

Thousand Miles Escort (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

NOTE: This review refers to a previous release of this film.

Awful! This overly confusing low budget Taiwanese disaster is impossible to follow, and steals a lot of its material from the superb Japanese "Lone Wolf And Cub" series. Our hero is a bad-ass kung fu guy who pushes around an orphan boy in a cart. He's trying to deliver a letter to the prime minister (?), but he finds that revenge is his true calling. Poorly made, and the kung fu isn't that great either. The only bright spots are a couple of scenes where kung fu diva Judy Lee gets to dish out some punishment, but she sadly doesn't see nearly enough action. It also has the absolute WORST dubbing I've EVER heard. Too damn bad.

Yes Madam 5 (product link)
Martial Arts / Girls With Guns

A low budget wanna-be action film starring Cynthia Khan as Inspector Yeung of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. Her boyfriend is a somewhat reluctant triad member played by a slick and serious Chin Siu Ho. Trouble begins when these two find each other involved in opposite sides of a police investigation to recover a floppy disc containing incriminating triad information. The requisite car chases and gun battles follow. The action is average, but the fighting is sparse and unremarkable, made worse by recycled footage, sloppy camera work, and incompetent editing. Even veteran hard hitters Chin Siu Ho and Billy Chow don't have much to work with. Recommended for die-hard Cynthia Khan fans only (like myself).

Yes Madam 5 (product link)
Martial Arts / Girls With Guns

This is a cheesy low budget wanna-be action film that has nothing (that I can tell) to do with either the "In The Line Of Duty" or "Yes, Madam!" series. The star of the film, Cynthia Khan, doesn't even make an appearance until 21 minutes into the show, but it's good to see her working again. Naturally, she looks a little older, but she does have a wide range of cute outfits to wear. Unfortunately, her three or four brief fight scenes are unremarkable, made worse by bad slow-mo photography and sloppy editing. Even veteran heavy hitters Chin Siu Ho and Billy Chow don't have anything to work with - it's a shame to see such talent wasted. Ms. Khan's character also states that "my kung fu used to be good, but I haven't practiced it in a while". Could this be a bleak vision of things to come for her?

Legend Of The Liquid Sword (product link)
Martial Arts / Comedy

I should have listened to Thomas Weisser - this film is utterly awful. I generally consider "Holy Weapon" (1993) and "Flying Dagger" (1993) to be Wong Jing's greatest embarrassments, and this film fits in very comfortably with those two. A great looking period film whose visual style is surpassed only by its incredible stupidity. There's not much of a story here - more like a series of disconnected and unrelated vignettes strung together about a young swordsman's (pop singer Aaron Kwok) quest to fight a villain named Flowerless. Thankfully, there are no fart jokes and no talking penises in this one, but it's still full of mind-numbingly stupid slapstick, a couple of dreadful musical numbers, and a cameo appearance by Jesus Christ. There are only two reasons to endure this disaster: 1) The action sequences are super exciting, hyper-kinetic, and extremely over-the-top. 2) Like most of Wong Jing's productions, the women are GORGEOUS. Ultra-cute Gloria Yip, fiercely beautiful Fennie Yuen, seductive and mysterious Chingmy Yau, and the regal and bitchy Cheung Man are all a sheer delight to behold. Why don't these women get to work with decent scripts?

Flying Dagger (product link)
Martial Arts / Comedy

Another amazingly stupid period action piece from scriptwriter Wong Jing. Nearly as bad as "Holy Weapon" with many of the same cast members. It's always a treat to see Cheung Man swinging a sword around, and her young assistant (Gloria Yip) is adorably inviting. Maggie Cheung is also seductively cute, but her fighting is just plain silly. Both Jacky Cheung and Tony Leung are painfully goofy, but their fighting is pretty good. There are, however, some nice effects, including a self motivated severed hand (a la "Thing" from "The Addams Family") that saves the day.

Romance / Mystery

An unbelievably bad caper film from girls 'n' guns experts D & B Productions, featuring Michelle Yeoh as a high class, spoiled rich, millionaire crook who doesn't have any fight scenes! In fact, there is no fighting or gunplay in the film whatsoever! Who would have thought? This film is little more than an excuse for Ms. Yeoh to strut around in expensive clothes and even more expensive cars, and to play off the suave charms of George Lam who's investigating her case. Kent Cheng plays a surprisingly hard ass cop who's relentlessly tailing Ms. Yeoh, but even he can't save the film from its mind numbing tedium.

City Cops (product link)
Crime / Action/Adventure

Painfully stupid. People should not be allowed to make movies like this - ever. I actually found myself yelling at the screen and covering my ears on several occasions while watching this atrocity. Some guy has some microfilm to incriminate a powerful triad leader. FBI agent Cynthia Rothrock wants to get to him before the bad guys do, and she follows him to Hong Kong where she is forced to work with a couple of idiot CID inspectors on the case. Then there's about an hour of pointless comedy crap as the cops play practical jokes on Cindy and try to seduce the suspect's sister. God, it's dreadful, and it just keeps getting worse. Thankfully, there's a minimally rewarding kung fu climax at the end when Japanese yakuza boss Michiko Nishiwaki shows up to get the microfilm. She's ultra cool as a Japanese baddie, and strangely enough all of her henchmen are familiar Hong Kong gweilos, including blondie Mark Houghton. Cynthia looks good and the three or four fights she gets into are pretty decent, but unless you're a die-hard Cynthia Rothrock fan, leave this one on the shelf.

Back Alley Princess (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

AWFUL! Apart from a half dozen well orchestrated kung fu brawls, this film is an atrocity. Polly Shang Kwan and Sam Hui are a couple of con artists who end up befriending a family of street venders and entertainers. But money is always a problem - one of the young girls has her school fees stolen by thugs, the family car breaks down, the landlord is raising the rent, and one of the girls' sleazy boyfriends has a large gambling debt. So Ms. Kwan (who portrays a man for the entire film!!!) lies, cheats, and steals to come up with the cash that everyone needs. Things get more serious when triad thugs kidnap the schoolgirl and sell her to a nasty gang boss, killing Carter Wong in the process. Then the group devises a plan - they decide to dress up Ms. Kwan as a girl (!) and sell her and lovely Angela Mao to the gangsters in order to infiltrate the organization and free their friend. A furious kung fu frenzy goes down with Ms. Kwan and Ms. Mao beating the crap out of the evil bad guys. The film ends with Polly proclaiming that she really is a girl, much to the astonishment of the entire cast. Ugh.

Okay, we've seen this "girl dresses as boy and fools everyone" gag dozens (and maybe hundreds) of times, but this time it's painfully obvious. Polly Shang Kwan is too cute and far too busty to come off as a man. Especially in the tight early 70's fashions that she's wearing. Even in loose fitting clothes you can tell she has a sizeable chest. And to have her pretend to be a man for the entire film? What's the point?!? And then there's the mind-boggling aspect of having her pose as a girl in order to fool the bad guys? What could the filmmakers possibly be thinking? "We need a woman to play the part of a man so that we can have her pose as a woman in the last twenty minutes of the film, and then she can surprise everyone by actually being a woman in the first place." Sure, it makes perfect sense... But regardless of what gender she's supposed to be, she and angelic Angela Mao kick glorious ass throughout the film, and they're the ONLY reason to sit through this abomination - or at least fast forward through it.

Her Fatal Ways 3 (product link)
Comedy / Girls With Guns

The final installment in the "Her Fatal Ways" trilogy is quite a departure from the first two, and paints a very interesting socio-political portrait of pre-1997 Hong Kong. While it's a comedy on the surface, underneath it's full of fear, paranoia, and distrust. An aging Chinese political leader decides to take a trip to Hong Kong in order to visit his childhood sweetheart, and Public Security Officer Shih-nan Cheng (Carol "Do Do" Cheng) is assigned to guard him. An airplane mishap takes her and her cousin Sheng (Alfred Cheung) to Taiwan instead, where policeman Yung (Chan Chung-Yung) is introduced as a new love interest. Back in Hong Kong, Inspector Lui (Anthony Wong) is assigned to assist Cheng, and the familiar mainlander shenanigans take place. Eventually, an assassination plot hatches, forcing Cheng, Sheng, Yung, and Lui to work together and save Chief Chien's life.

Apart from a delightful showdown between Cheng and the assassin, the film is completely devoid of action and focuses almost entirely on Carol Cheng's exhausting rapid fire yelling. Wow, that woman can talk up a storm. Most of the humor is very topical and cultural, making it impenetrable for Western audiences, but there are a couple of physical gags that are surprisingly amusing. An effeminate turn by Anthony Wong is utterly brilliant. Sadly, Ms. Cheng's character has lost a lot of her endearing charm and innocence, and suffers from a very unflattering haircut. The non-stop verbal sparring makes it difficult to recommend this film unless you're a fan of Hong Kong comedy or a Carol Cheng completist.

Her Fatal Ways 2 (product link)
Comedy / Girls With Guns

Carol "Do Do" Cheng and Alfred Cheung return to Hong Kong for more wacky hijinx involving illegal arms dealers. Waise Lee plays the slick and slimy love interest this time around, as the cousin of Tony Leung's character from the first film. He also happens to be a police officer and the inevitable cross cultural joint operation takes place.

This is an example of the very worst type of sequel, one that is simply a low quality knock-off of the original. The jokes are stale and even less funny the second time around. Tony Leung's absence also spells doom for the proceedings, and the innocent tenderness of the first film comes off as a farce in this one. The action is extremely sparse and basically boils down to two chaotic, but marginally entertaining shootouts. Alfred Cheung actually gets to use his ESP this time around, with lukewarm results. We learn that the key to focusing his powers depends on his chastity, which leads to the film's most bizarre line of dialog: "a drop of sperm equals seven drops of blood." That makes about as much sense as the rest of the film does. As before, only Carol Cheng's impressive acting and comedic timing keep the film moving, but unless you're a fan of Hong Kong comedy, it can be a serious chore to watch.

Shaolin Hero (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

A sub-par kung fu outing concerning a tragic love triangle and a secret society that's out to shame a respected man. While waiting for her lover to return, a young woman is attacked by bandits and subsequently rescued by a chivalrous man named Willow (stately Leung Ka-Yan). She decides to take him as her husband, while her jilted lover Rocky (dashing Meng Fei) is being framed for crimes he hasn't committed. Through devious cunning, the secret society plots to have Rocky and Willow kill each other so that they can rise to power.

The plot is nearly incomprehensible and the characters are neither interesting or endearing. The film has obviously been re-titled for the international market, as it has absolutely nothing to do with Shaolin Temple or Buddhist monks. Instead, it features a group of blind monks who ingeniously kidnap a woman in a bathtub. You can tell they're blind because they have sour expressions and are always looking upwards. The action scenes contain some fairly satisfying swordplay, but the editing is a bit disruptive. The only noteworthy fight in the film is during the climax when Leung Ka-Yan and Meng Fei duke it out with a villainous Phillip Ko, and it's quite enjoyable. Unless you're a Meng Fei or Leung Ka-Yan completist, there's better fare out there to satisfy a kung fu craving.

Shaolin Hero [PanMedia] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

A sub-par kung fu outing concerning a tragic love triangle and a secret society that's out to shame a respected man. Oh! Yes Sir! (product link)
Action/Adventure / Comedy

Another formulaic Frankie Chan action comedy that's redeemed only by its exciting fight scenes. Power Chan (Frankie Chan) is a hot-headed cop whose girlfriend has just become a porn star. He has trouble dealing with that fact, so he channels his rage into beating up a group of foreign gun runners, including such familiar faces as Jeffrey Falcon, Mark Houghton, and Kim Maree Penn. To get back at Chan for busting their latest shipment, the villains hire an assassin to impersonate him and kill all of the key witnesses. Framed for murder and wanted by the police, Chan enlists the aid of a bitchy Taoist sorceress (Eric Tsang in drag) and together they manage to track down the real killer and beat him up in spectacular fashion.

Like Frankie Chan's other action comedies of the same period, the dichotomy of comedy and action is jarring, and the make-it-up-as-you-go plot exists only to string together the various set pieces. Like many Hong Kong comedies, the humor is dark, violent, sexist, misogynistic, absurd, and almost completely inaccessible to Western audiences. The action, on the other hand, translates extremely well and Chan's direction, choreography, and execution are stunning as always. He and his stunt performers are all in top form, and their movements are fast, fluid, and hard hitting. While the majority of the film is tedious and annoying, the pay-off of such high precision stuntwork is what makes the journey worthwhile.

The Invincible Kung Fu Trio [DOUBLE FEATURE] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

A pointless and nearly intolerable kung fu outing that's saved only by its plentiful bounty of fighting. Shaolin fighters Fong Sai Yuk (charismatic Mang Fei), Hung See Kwan, and Liu Kao Chi (leg fighter John Liu) have formed a brotherhood to fight oppressive Ching rule. The emperor persuades the evil Abbot of Wu Tang to hunt down and destroy the brothers using his special butterfly kung fu. That's right, a fighting style based on the untapped savage fury of butterflies. He also uses his black magic to create a trio of doppelgangers to fight the brothers, which gives the filmmakers an opportunity to use some nifty doubles and split screen effects. After several skirmishes with the sinister Abbot, the brothers learn that the only way to defeat him is to combine the kung fu styles of monkey, snake, tiger, and crane. A ram also gets thrown into the mix at some point. While the kung fu is certainly plentiful, the continuity is terrible, the editing is a bit disruptive, and the execution is occasionally lackluster. Angela Mao fans will be disappointed by her cameo appearance and lack of action. The standard awful English dubbing is done by the same five guys that did every Ocean Shores video back in the 80's, and the pan-and-scan butchering obscures a lot of the fight scenes. The dubbing team also goes overboard by including ridiculous animal sounds in the fight scenes, including monkeys, snakes, tigers, cranes, dogs, cows, chickens, sheep, and even a steam locomotive at one point. For genre fans only.

Ten Tigers From Kwangtung (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

An interesting premise with some awesome kung fu, but the execution is confusing and rather lacking. The Ten Tigers of Kwangtung are a group of kung fu fighters led by the wise and charismatic Ti Lung. They're hiding and protecting the leader of the anti-Ching revolution from Wang Lung, who has been ordered to arrest him. All of these events happen in an extended flashback, and they're the most interesting parts of the film. Back in the present, the sons of the Ten Tigers are being systematically murdered by Wang Lung's son and his uncle in order to avenge Lung's death at the hands of Ti Lung. Finally at the end of the film, the two remaining kids (including a young Chin Siu Ho?) take on the two remaining bad guys in a spectacular display of kung fu skill. Very impressive. Then the film abruptly ends with a shot of the Ten Tigers sending their refugee friend away on a boat.

The storytelling is by far the weakest link in this film, as it's often confusing or just plain boring at times. Ti Lung gives an excellent performance and lends a sense of class and maturity to the production, which balances out some of the more eccentric players. The kung fu is good, although much of it is pointless due to Fu Sheng's hot temper and eagerness to start a fight with anyone. And once again, he's the only member of the cast with really awful hair - an unsettling trend in Fu Sheng's filmography. Director Chang Cheh also exhibits his flair for bloodletting and a certain sense of the absurd. In the final showdown between Ti Lung and Wang Lung, Wang resorts to using his ultimate weapon - a giant golden club in the shape of a naked woman! What the hell?!? But Ti eventually defeats him, resulting in an outrageous blood geyser spraying forth from Wang's broken skull. There's also a rather gruesome scene of a guy's head being kicked clean off and the resulting blood flow - all captured in glorious slow motion. At its best, it's very entertaining and all of the characters are unique and interesting. At its worst, it's tiresome and hard to follow.

The 13 Cold-Blooded Eagles (product link)
Martial Arts / Fantasy

A low budget period action film about a group of assassins that are being used to snatch up all of the secret martial arts forms in the world. When Silver Eagle learns about his master's evil plans, he allies himself with Quihua (beautiful Cynthia Khan), the keeper of the dreaded Star Bleed Skill. Together, they make a brave assault against the evil master and the remaining Eagles.

It's nice to see Cynthia Khan in a somewhat regal role and wearing a frilly period costume dress for a change. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem as comfortable or proficient with flowing fabric as Joey Wang or Brigitte Lin, but she does swing a really mean sword! The martial arts choreography is very energetic and acrobatic, but the execution seems a bit sloppy at times with severely undercranked shots, bloodless battles, and surprisingly little physical contact between opponents. However, I was convinced that Waise Lee could hold his own in a fight, so they must have been doing something right. Pretty average in all respects.

This film brought Jackie, and kung fu comedy, into fame. Dated, cheap looking, and awkwardly sluggish, but still features some incredible martial arts and training sequences.

Snake In The Eagle's Shadow (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Identical to "Drunken Master" except with a different style of kung fu and it's not nearly as goofy. Many of the cast members, including the old master, are the same as well. Highlighted by painful training sequences, slick choreography, amazing acrobatics, and Jackie missing a front tooth as well! Overall though, it's rather tiresome - watch "Young Master" instead.

Ninja In The Dragon's Den (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Who would have thought that I'd go into my local Japanese video store and come home with a Chinese film? This is a Hong Kong ninja film from master director Corey Yuen, featuring a young Conan Lee as a kung fu fighter and Japanese heart-throb Hiroyuki Sanada as a ninja. It's completely incomprehensible, but at least the fighting is good. The beginning of the film features a dreadful theme song with English lyrics called "Legend Of The Ninja", and we get to hear it over and over again. We're also treated to some great ninja acrobatics and the obligatory ninja trench digging scenes. Next we're at a traditional Chinese lion dance festival and a group of stilt-walking entertainers show up. However, they're attacked and beaten by an evil guy on stilts, until Conan Lee shows up and evens the score. This stilt fighting scene is among the most incredible things I've ever seen, and it goes on for several minutes. Utterly amazing! A few wire tricks were incorporated here and there, but the rest of the stunts are just genuine displays of incredible skill and balance. Sadly, the rest of the film can't live up to this level of excitement. An old man who makes mirrors has become a target for Sanada's ninja character, and Conan Lee decides to protect him. This naturally pits Lee and Sanada against each other, leading to some very impressive, and sometimes silly, fighting. Unfortunately, much of the fighting is shot in almost complete darkness, and it suffers greatly from the injustice of pan and scan cropping. At the end, after beating each other senseless, Lee and Sanada team up to fight a common foe in the form of an evil Taoist priest. (where the hell did HE come from?!?) He's too much for them to handle, until Lee exposes Sanada's girlfriend's bare breasts. The sight is too much for the monk to withstand and he is killed, followed by yet another "Jesus Christ Superstar" gag. (why is this so popular in Asian films?) Too weird. Anyway, to summarize, the fighting is spectacular and the rest of the film reeks.

The Woman Avenger (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

A cheap and simple, but thoroughly enjoyable rape-and-revenge film starring kung fu diva Hsia Kwan Lee. A group of highway bandits kill Hsia Kwan Lee's husband, and then rape her and leave her for dead. She is luckily rescued and nursed back to health by a Buddhist priestess, and she begs the priestess to teach her kung fu. The priestess reluctantly agrees, and Ms. Lee spends the next three and a half years learning dragon fist kung fu. With vengeance burning in her heart, she sets out to find and kill the men who raped her in a series of increasingly brutal set pieces. Hsia Kwan Lee delivers a fierce and powerful performance, and exhibits some incredible feats of strength, dexterity, and flexibility. You definitely don't want to mess with this woman. Unfortunately, the film suffers from a lean budget, an overuse of the utterly annoying dropped-frame editing technique, and a lot of the kung fu choreography looks too choreographed, for lack of a better term. The fight scenes often look more like synchronized gymnastics than hand to hand combat. But Hsia Kwan Lee is awesome throughout, and the film is surprisingly fun to watch. Apart from Ms. Lee's spirited performance, what makes the film work so well is its single-minded purpose. It's a revenge film through and through, and isn't cluttered or weighed down with humor, romance, sentimentality, intrigue, or heavy-handed morality issues. Hsia Kwan Lee means to kill the men who raped her, and everything in the film is a part of meeting that end. A refreshing and underrated approach to storytelling.

Chinatown Kid (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Handsome and intense Alexander Fu Sheng is the Chinatown Kid, a poor refugee living in Hong Kong who crosses the wrong people and is forced to flee to the U.S. There, he gets into more trouble by opposing the local triads and beating anyone up who tries to bully the fair citizens of San Francisco's Chinatown. Oddly enough, he joins one of the triads (led by Philip Kwok) and becomes a very rich and powerful gang boss. When he loses the respect of his friends, he decides to clean up the town by ordering his gang to not deal in drugs and prostitution anymore. Not surprisingly, this leads to a free-for-all martial arts confrontation between him and all of the crooks in Chinatown. Fu Sheng looks great in his bell bottom pants, and his fighting style is raw and intense. Unfortunately, this Shaw Brothers production lacks substance and the continuity and scripting are laughably bad. Also, the lack of any hot kung fu babes made me lose interest fairly early on and it's quite clearly a macho guy flick. Fairly fun stuff that will definitely satisfy a kung fu craving.

Executioners From Shaolin (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

"Dreadful" is the first word that comes to mind for this early effort from legendary kung fu master Liu Chia Liang, but the excellent combat sequences at the end of the film help to redeem itself. Shaolin Temple is burned and its disciples flee, but they continue to undermine the Manchu rule by disguising themselves as travelling theater performers. The first half of the film follows one such troupe led by tiger claw fighter Hung Sei Kwan (Chen Kwan Tai), who takes kung fu babe Lily Li as his wife. After the group disbands, they have a son (Yung Wang Yu, not to be confused with Jimmy Wang Yu) who dresses as a girl and learns his mother's crane style kung fu. Ten years pass and Hung decides it's time to avenge his Shaolin brothers by killing the evil Lo Lieh. Although defeated, Hung manages to escape and refines his tiger claw kung fu so that he can challenge Lo Lieh again seven years later. This time, however, he's not so lucky, and ends up getting killed. Next, it's up to Wang Yu to avenge his father by learning tiger claw style mixed with crane style, and the unorthodox combination of the two manages to beat Lo Lieh. (I've read that this is the basis of Hung Gar, the fighting system that legendary Wong Fei Hung developed) The kung fu sequences are nice, but the weak plot and awkward humor throughout the film are tedious. Definitely an endurance test, but it does finally pay off - if you're a kung fu fan, that is.

Golden Queen's Commandos [2-Movie Set] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

What a crazy film! It starts out as a women in prison film, and Black Fox (tough and sexy Brigitte Lin) plans a breakout for her and six specially chosen inmates. Each of the Hong Kong hotties has a specialty and Black Fox blackmails the girls into helping her destroy a chemical plant that's producing nasty weapons. From here it turns into "The Magnificent Seven", and all of the girls end up sacrificing their lives to further their cause. That's a major bummer because they're all really hot. Brigitte Lin burns up the screen as a tough gunslinging bitch with an eye patch and mysterious intentions. A totally bad-ass Sally Yeh is a drop-dead gorgeous sexy demolition expert, and by the end of the film you're left begging to see more of her. Additionally there's a way cool, spiky haired, sunglass wearing, bible toting, gunslinger chick named Black Cat (Elsa Yeung) who constantly challenges Black Fox's motives and authority. Then there's a snotty prostitute, a tough and sexy Mongolian wrestler chick, an alcoholic swordswoman, and an adorably cute cat burglar. These all-attitude chicks mean business and kick some serious ass, all without smearing their perfect makeup or chipping a nail (and some of their makeup is pretty severe). Apart from the girls' overwhelming presence, the film is really terrible. The editing and continuity are laughably bad, the story is confusing and disjointed, and many of the action scenes are filmed in complete darkness. The music is even funnier, with pieces taken from Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western scores, "Battlestar Galactica", and even "Tron"!

Stoner (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Another bizarre early 1970's contemporary kung fu flick riding in the wake of Bruce Lee's "Enter The Dragon". A tall, lanky, and VERY 70's looking George Lazenby is a hot-headed Australian cop named Jack Stoner who's trying to trace the origin of a new super drug called "the happy pill". Sweet and demure Angela Mao is a Taiwanese cop who also gets assigned to the case, although her investigation is much more discreet (and she's oh-so-cute!). They both finally end up at the evil drug lord's mansion and beat everyone up in a blistering barrage of martial arts fisticuffs. The first hour is dreadfully dull, and even sinks into cheap thrill cheesecake land, but once the fighting starts, it becomes very interesting. Watching George Lazenby exchange blows with Hong Kong's finest is quite entertaining. His execution is surprisingly good, but he still looks rather goofy doing it (he's also a good two feet taller than anyone else in the film, which adds to his awkwardness). Not surprisingly, the highlight of the film is watching Angela Mao duke it out with one of the guys from the climax of "Hapkido". Although many of her moves are the same, her burning intensity and physical precision are a sheer delight to behold. Samo Hung also shows up as a gang leader with a REALLY nasty wart on his nose. He outclasses nearly all of the other fighers, even though Lazenby eventually beats him into the ground. Overall, a fairly entertaining slow starter with a slam-bang ending.
