Naked Killer (product link)
Drama / Action/Adventure

Stylish and sleazy. Simon Yam is a cop suffering from the trauma of accidentally shooting his partner. As a result, he gets physically ill whenever he tries to use his gun. He ends up falling for Chingmy Yau (who wouldn't?), a tough bitch with an attitude and a penchant for trouble (she also cures his impotence - lucky him). While trying to escape a crime scene, she is rescued by a master assassin who changes her identity and teaches her the art of killing. She finally faces off with another one of the master's students gone bad, played with delightful nastiness by Carrie Ng. Meanwhile, poor Simon Yam is still searching for Chingmy Yau, who he is convinced is still alive. The sets and outfits are gorgeous and Chingmy Yau is stunning and incredibly sexy (and she gets to fight, too!). Carrie Ng goes over the top with her tough chick lesbian performance, and her young Japanese lover is also quite adorable. Great stuff.

Hard Boiled (product link)
Action/Adventure / Bullet Ballet

The highest squib budget of any film. This is John Woo's action masterpiece with amazing choreography and cinematography. Non-stop action, excessive gunplay, high body count, and lots of things exploding. Also features my favorite Chow Yun Fat persona, and he has never looked better. Tony Leung is an undercover cop whose efforts are nearly destroyed by hot-headed cop Chow Yun Fat. The two of them finally realize that they're on the same side and team up to take down a nasty psychotic triad boss (Anthony Wong). Great stuff.

Lifeline (product link)
Drama / Action/Adventure

A Hong Kong variation of "Backdraft" (1991) with the action cranked up to maximum. Similar to "Backdraft", it's a slow starter that focuses exclusively on character development, but the stunning forty minute climax is more than enough to forgive the dramatic lapses in the first half of the film. (something that "Backdraft" couldn't pull off) The story revolves around a certain team of firefighters who are considered ill-fated and unlucky by their peers in the firefighting community. For the first hour of the film, we get to know all of the firefighters on a personal level as they deal with their personal problems and the pressures of work. Lau Ching Wan is a hot-headed and reckless firefighter (what a surprise) who values human life more than procedure, and is constantly in trouble with his superiors for taking "unnecessary risks". A strict and stone-cold Alex Fong is the newly transferred leader of the team, whose ex-wife suddenly wants him to raise his estranged daughter. An impressive Ruby Wong is the only woman on the team and she has to deal with marital problems as well, particularly the issue of how pregnancy will affect her job as a firefighter. And of course there's the young and ambitious rookie, who learns the ropes the hard way. The primary love interest in the story is the beautiful and bitchy Carmen Lee, a doctor who Lau has fallen for. Unfortunately, their antagonistic relationship goes nowhere, as Lau is forced to heed the call of duty in the explosive and heart-pounding finale. The climax of the film finds our ill-fated heroes trapped in a burning factory death trap and desperately trying to escape. The action scenes are amazingly filmed and spectacularly riveting, not to mention extremely dangerous! I have never seen anybody engulfed in flames like this before, and the cinematography is astonishing. Quite possibly the pinnacle of pyrotechnic filmmaking, this film must be seen to be believed. Truly awe-inspiring...

Interestingly, by the time the climax of the film is underway, you get so wrapped up in what's going on that you totally forget that there was even a story going on beforehand. And then you realize that there actually isn't a conventional story taking place at all. There are no bad guys, no unsolved mysteries, no psychotic arsonists on the loose, no extreme character conflicts, no heroics, and nothing to prove - it's just a team of firefighters doing their job. Director Johnnie To has cleverly manipulated you into caring for these people solely so he can put them in an extreme life threatening situation and make his audience squirm. The tension he creates is superb, and you find yourself constantly agonizing over their safety. Johnnie To has really pulled off something special with this film, and I never thought I would find an action film without guns, car chases, and kung fu to be so exciting.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (product link)
Drama / Martial Arts

A stunningly beautiful film. The traditional Chinese swordplay genre gets a serious facelift, similar to when Tsui Hark redefined the genre back in 1983 with "Zu, Warriors From The Magic Mountain" and again in 1991 with his "Once Upon A Time In China" series. Chow Yun Fat is a retired swordsman who wishes to leave his warrior life of bloodshed behind him, but a rebellious princess (incredible Zhang Ziyi) and an old enemy (kung fu veteran Cheng Pei Pei from "Come Drink With Me" (1965) ) force him to pick up the sword once again. His closest companion is Michelle Yeoh, an accomplished swordswoman herself, but the two of them have trouble expressing their feelings for each other. Princess Jen longs for an adventurous life away from the stuffy protocol of royalty and stirs up trouble when she steals Chow's legendary sword. The sword and its power slowly corrupt the young princess and she becomes an uncontrollable and unpredictable instrument of destruction. Only Chow can save her, but she isn't his only problem...

After hearing all of the positive buzz about this film over the last two years, I was extremely anxious to finally see it, although I was also a bit apprehensive. The first red flag was hearing that director Ang Lee ("Eat Drink Man Woman", "Sense And Sensibility") who had never directed an action film would be making a kung fu epic. That illicited a bunch of snickering and skepticism in the film community. Secondly, Jet Li was initially cast to play the role of the retired swordsman, but was later replaced by Chow Yun Fat due to scheduling and possibly artistic conflicts. This concerned me, because now we had a kung fu film where the primary kung fu actor was being replaced by a non- kung fu actor. Lastly, for nearly a year before its U.S. release, Sony had been saying they had little faith in the film and would only release a dubbed version of it for the art theater circuit. This seriously frustrated me and made me even more nervous about the film. Thankfully, none of the aforementioned issues spoiled the integrity of the film. Director Ang Lee has done an amazing job of presenting an action oriented love story, and Yuen Woo Ping's fight choreography is utterly astounding. Chow Yun Fat does a great job with his limited action scenes and creates a dramatic sense of presence that I'm not sure Jet Li would have done as convincingly. After seeing the film, I couldn't see anyone but Chow in that role. And finally, much to my surprise, at the last minute Sony decided to give the film a wider release in its pristine subtitled form. Thank you, Sony!

First of all, the film is gorgeous and beautifully filmed. The breathtaking scenery is vast and serene, and the sets are beautiful. Michelle Yeoh delivers possibly her finest performance ever, both physically and dramatically. More than anyone else, the audience is truly in tune with what she's thinking and feeling. However, it's Zhang Ziyi who ends up stealing the show. Her fiery intensity is so overwhelming that she literally owns every scene she's in, and when she and Michelle Yeoh get together, the screen truly comes alive with energy. And much like the troubled teenager that she portrays, her emotions are destructive and all over the place. Driven by passion and fuelled by naivete and inexperience, her delivery is pure, raw, and all-consuming. She's a very dangerous woman whose power and passions are beyond her control... The action direction is flawless and beautiful to watch. Digital wire removal techniques have allowed Yuen Woo Ping to use heavier wires for more impressive stunts, and all of the players look exceedingly graceful in their maneuvers. It's also noteworthy that the combat sequences don't use the over-the-top smacking and clanging sound effects, making the battles seem much more realistic. The only real complaint I have about the film is that it seems a little long and slow paced - especially for a Hong Kong film, which generally tend to be frantic. And while I don't consider it "the 'Star Wars' of kung fu films" as Ric Meyers has, or a film to revolutionize the entire film industry as others have, I still think it's a fantastic film and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in Asian swordplay or female action films.

Wheels On Meals (product link)
Martial Arts / Comedy

Sammo Hung plays a bumbling detective with laughably bad hair who is trying to track down the missing Lola Forner. Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao are best friends who run a mobile fast food catering business and end up getting involved with Sammo's case. Shot on location in Spain with incredible fight sequences. The final showdown between Jackie and Benny Urquidez is as good as it gets.

Miracles (product link)
Drama / Martial Arts

A 1930's period piece, this film has great sets, great action, great costumes, great characters, and a wonderful feel, but it's just too damned long and boring! Jackie plays a simple, common man with heart of gold who stumbles into becoming the head of a crime mob. He has to deal with rival mobs and ultimately sets up a huge party for the poor flower lady who helped him obtain his powerful status.

Once Upon A Time In China 2 [Dutch Special Edition] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Jet Li (brilliant as usual) returns as Wong Fei Hung and takes on the vicious White Lotus Society while Rosamund Kwan tries to take advantage of him. Donnie Yen is a welcome sight as an evil governor and it's a total treat to watch him and Jet Li duke it out. This film has a strong and violent East vs. West theme, and while the fighting is great, there are some awkwardly misplaced bits of humor thrown in, in an attempt to lighten the tone.

Once Upon A Time In China [Dutch Special Edition] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Fantastic! A sprawling historical martial arts epic depicting the events of Wong Fei Hung and turn of the century China. Jet Li makes an excellent Wong Fei Hung, and his performance is full of intensity and passion - plus, he wields a really mean umbrella! The scope of the film is so broad that it is nearly impossible to follow and understand in its unsubtitled form, but the photography, sets, and action are absolutely brilliant to watch. In stereo, too!

The Killer [1989] (product link)
Bullet Ballet / Drama

Chow Yun Fat is an assassin with strong morals and code of honor, and Danny Lee is a cop who'll stop at nothing to catch him. They eventually team up and take out everybody (I mean EVERYBODY). Lots of blood and bullets combined with the stunning visual artistry of Tsui Hark/John Woo. Great stuff, although it's overly melodramatic.

Bichunmoo (product link)
Drama / Action/Adventure

After "Shiri" blew away Korean box office records in 1999, only a year later did "Bichunmoo" do the same thing. "Bichunmoo" is a stunning period film that's about 60% romantic drama and 40% martial arts action. Less than five minutes into the film, I knew I was going to be crying - a lot. Like many swordplay dramas, the story is convoluted and very confusing at times, but at its core it's a story of a doomed love triangle and the forbidden passions of people who are separated by class, duty, and social status. The inevitable outcome of such ill-fated love can only be heart breaking tragedy in spades (Tsui Hark's "The Lovers" (1994) immediately comes to mind...). Top rate acting, breathtaking cinematography, and a stirring music score make this film an emotionally exhausting ride. And amidst all of this heart wrenching romantic goo is a bunch of high energy Hong Kong styled sword fighting, complete with blood geysers, dismemberment, and the ever popular torso splitting. The action scenes are quite good, and are reminiscent of the "Swordsman" (1990) series. The only area where the film suffers is in the digital effects department. While they're never embarrassingly bad, some of the digital compositions are distracting and just don't look very good. So, if you can handle a huge load of weepy and depressing romantic drama, this is a great film to check out.

Fist Of Legend (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Jet Li stars in this incredible remake of Bruce Lee's "Fist Of Fury" (a.k.a. "The Chinese Connection"). While studying abroad in Japan, Jet Li learns that his master was killed in a martial arts tournament by a Japanese fighter. Suspicious of foul play, he rushes home to China in order to investigate the case. He stirs up a lot of trouble, which eventually leads to a furious kung fu showdown with a nasty Japanese general (Billy Chow). This film is utterly fantastic. Jet Li, Chin Siu Ho, Billy Chow, and Yasuaki Kurata are all in top form and performing some of the most spectacular fighting sequences I've ever seen. (thank you Yuen Woo Ping!) And on top of all that, Jet Li's girlfriend (adorable Shinobu Nakayama) is one of the cutest Japanese actresses I've ever seen - impossibly charming. This film, and Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master II" are my favorite kung fu films of all time.

The Magnificent Butcher (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Holy crap! This is one of the most fantastic kung fu films I've ever seen - a true classic masterpiece of dizzying martial arts mastery. Sammo Hung plays Butcher Wing, a hot-headed student of Wong Fei Hung (played by the venerable Kwan Tak Hing). His brother comes to town looking for him, but a rascal from a rival school cheats him and steals his wife. An old drunkard also comes to town, and after the standard sit-com silliness of the kung fu comedy genre, all of the good guys team up to fight all of the bad guys in an ever-escalating and increasingly brutal kung fu showdown. Firmly in the mold of Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master", except that it's much, much better in tone, story-telling, and execution. A brilliant piece of filmmaking, this is one of Yuen Woo Ping's best films, and possibly Sammo Hung's finest kung fu performance ever. He is simply AMAZING, and his execution is fast, hard hitting, and very precise. Kwan Tak Hing shows up briefly as Master Wong Fei Hung in the beginning of the film and has a fascinating kung fu calligraphy battle with the main villain, which sets up the rivalry between the two schools. It's amazing to see a guy in his sixties doing fingertip push-ups and acrobatics! Yuen Biao and Wei Pai are also students of Wong Fei Hung and have a couple of fantastic fights towards the end of the film. I've seen the guy who plays the "drunken master" in several other films, but I've never seen him fight like he does in this one - he's incredible. In fact, everyone in this film gives an astonishing physical performance. I'm speechless, really. If you like kung fu, do yourself a favor and see this movie. Now.

The Legend Of Wisely [Beam] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Fantasy

Wow! A gorgeously filmed big budget adventure epic in the tradition of "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". The immensely charming Sam Hui is an adventurer and sci-fi writer named Wisely who gets tricked into helping his friend steal a magical black pearl from a Buddhist monastery in Nepal. The pearl is the cornerstone of the monks' existence, and Wisely decides to return it to them. But it won't be easy because there are so many bad guys who want to get their hands on it as well, including an awesome crime boss played by Ti Lung. His fighting is spectacular, and he has a very energetic exchange with Hui in the Egyptian desert. Joey Wang is on hand as both eye candy and as a love interest, and although she doesn't get to do much, she's fun to watch (especially parading around in her underwear). It turns out that the pearl is actually an extraterrestrial computer, and an alien living in Egypt wants to use it to get back home! Great stunts, awesome fighting, high production values, competent effects, superb cinematography, and breathtaking locales make this film a definite notch above the rest. A little silly and kind of slow in parts, but always entertaining.

Invincible Pole Fighter (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This fantastic martial arts epic was director Lau Kar Leung's last film for Shaw Brothers and probably his best. After a string of dreadful studio imposed kung fu comedies, he strikes back with this dark and brooding violent tale of betrayal and revenge. When Gordon Liu's father and brothers are betrayed and butchered by the Mongols, he becomes a Buddhist monk and waits to exact his revenge. He excels at spear fighting, and adopts additional pole fighting techniques at the temple. When his younger sister (cute and spunky Wei Ying Hung) gets captured by the Mongols, Liu finally heads out to deliver justice. The martial arts sequences are superb and Gordon Liu's patented warrior monk persona never looked better. Surprisingly, Philip Ko delivers an amazing physical performance as a Buddhist reverend, and his pole fighting exchanges with Liu are spectacular. Master Lau Kar Leung has a cameo in the beginning of the film and he fights like a son of a bitch. Great stuff. Kung fu diva Wei Ying Hung sees a fair amount of action herself, and delivers quite possibly her finest martial arts performance. Sadly, rising star Alexander Fu Sheng died in a car accident during the making of the film, causing much of it to be rewritten. Classic kung fu doesn't get much better than this.

Police Story 3: Supercop (product link)
Martial Arts / Comedy

Slower paced, more serious, and much less fighting than the previous two "Police Story" movies, this one relies more on the story and the stunt work. Excellent production values, big budget, sync sound (Jackie's first!), and it's even in stereo! Considered Michelle Yeoh's comeback film, she unfortunately doesn't get much of an opportunity to show off and upstage Jackie, but when she does, she does it magnificently. And finally, did anyone else notice that the musical score rips off the James Bond theme and "Aliens"?

As far as the U.S. release is concerned, it's a bit of a disappointment. The music score is lame and inappropriate, several crucial plot devices are left out, and the opening credits are apalling (although it wasn't butchered nearly as bad as "Operation Condor").

Battle Royale (product link)
Horror / Thriller

What an amazing film! At the end of the millenium, Japanese society has collapsed. Fearing the youth, the Millenium Educational Reform Act is passed, also known as the "Battle Royale." Each year, a randomly chosen class of ninth graders is chosen to participate in the Battle Royale. Left on a deserted island with explosive collars around their necks, the students have three days to kill each other off, with the last one standing earning his or her freedom. "Okay class, today's lesson is - survival..." Some students form alliances, hoping for a peaceful solution. Some commit suicide. Some desperately try to undermine and break the system, hoping to win their freedom through terrorism. Some are in denial, and some lash out at everyone they see. And some of them are there for fun... And so, for the next two hours you get to see a group of 40 desperate teenagers killing each other off in a frenzied attempt to win the game. When it finally comes down to the two main characters, who is going to survive?

A very well made film with a very dark and nasty sense of humor. The "Battle Royale" training video that the students are forced to watch is wickedly amusing. The film does an excellent job of capturing the very essence of teen angst, featuring overly melodramatic dialog and a completely over-the-top musical score . It's also shockingly and graphically brutal, causing me to jump out of my seat on several occasions. While I don't understand it, I found a sick fascination in watching attractive teenagers kill each other. (time for therapy, perhaps?) It's also quite satisfying if you like girls 'n' guns action, since the girls in the film are arguably more violent than the boys, and have no qualms when it comes to pulling the trigger (whereas almost all of the boys are impotent with their weapons). Things sort of fall apart towards the end, but the film never fails to be interesting. While it's not for all tastes, "Battle Royale" is a truly awe-inspiring action/horror film as well as a fascinating character study and a biting commentary on society. Check it out.

Police Story 2 (product link)
Martial Arts / Comedy

Jackie gets tangled up with a group of terrorists with an affinity for blowing things up. When they kidnap his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung), Jackie goes on a rampage to bring the evil-doers to justice. Forget the plot, this film contains some of Jackie's best fighting, including the classic playground battle. He's probably his most handsome in this film as well.

Police Story (product link)
Martial Arts / Comedy

Great fighting. Jackie plays a HK cop who's framed for murder while protecting a witness and takes the law into his own hands to clear his name and take down the bad guys. So far I've seen four different cuts of this film (and that's not including the U.S. release!). The theatrical version is probably the best, which leaves most everything intact. The longer Japanese edit includes a couple of throw away scenes that help explain a couple of the more bizarre and obscure jokes, like the birthday cake gag. The DVD is good, but the original Hong Kong video release is dreadful, leaving out a good 15-20 minutes of necessary court room exposition and some rather funny gags.

Once Upon A Time In China 3 (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

A much more aggressive film than the first two, with Wong Fei Hung losing his temper, Aunt Yee actually kissing him (full on the lips!), and brutal internal conflict between and amongst the Chinese gangsters and the foreigners (this time being the Russians). Still, there are plentiful helpings of action and A LOT of lion dancing/fighting. And there's a particularly gruesome shot of Clubfoot's leg getting mutilated.

Jackie is back as Wong Fei Hung and his fighting has never been more amazing. This time around, a young Wong Fei Hung (played by a man in his forties!) goes up against a group of villians who are stealing and exporting China's treasures abroad. Quite possibly the most amazing martial arts film I have ever seen. A superb big budget film with excellent performances by everyone. Won 1994 Hong Kong film award for best action choreography.
