Re-Cycle (product link) Horror / Thriller Quite possibly the best CG in an HK flick in recent days. Beautifully told story and complex plot twists. This film is well directed with an very talented cast of actresses and actors. The directors get their multitude themes across with out being hokey or corny. The cinematography is amazing with very well placed angles and frames bringing the audience into the picture. Wonderful and seamless transitions from plot line to sub plot lines. The story is not without its plot holes and script errors, however it shows that the director and cast have great passion for the message they are trying to get across. That said Re-Cycle a beautiful piece of entertainment and insight.
Perhaps Love [2005] (product link) Musical / Romance Set against the background of making a musical that just so happens to follow the real life love story of the leading lady and man, "Perhaps Love" breaks the typical norm for mainstream Hong Kong Cinema. The director does an incredible job of visually connecting the two interconnecting storylines seamlessly and while keeping the audience's attention. The cinematography is gritty, dry and then can be soft and smooth depending on the emotion meant to be felt. Emotions run high on this roller coaster. One can honestly feel the raw, powerful and often confused emotions experienced by the characters. While the talent seems type-casted it works very well with the irony of the plot. All in all "Perhaps Love" is an extraordinarily well put together movie, definitely a worthwhile movie to add to any Hong Kong Cinema fan's collection.
The Duel (product link) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Fantasy Although not among the ranks of Hong Kong classics, "The Duel" is actually one of the better Ekin Cheng movies. It's very poorly put together even for a Hong Kong movie. Most notable are the female talents attracted to or at odds with Cheng's character. The scenes are poorly set up, often without clarity, and the storyline is hard to follow. Perhaps the only redeeming value of this movie is the fantasy swordplay, which in itself is rather sad. It is said to be an innovative use of CG in Chinese cinema for the time, yet other movies made around the same time were more tactfully placed and more tastefully done. If you are looking for something to just buy to collect, go ahead let it gather dust on your shelf because at most it might be watched once, if not less.
Fearless [2006] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure On top of being a very powerful film, "Huo Yuan Jia" only continues to get better in the extended director's cut. Celebrated as Jet's final martial arts epic, "Fearless" (as it's known to US audiences) doesn't fail to impress. The fighting is raw and is entertaining to even the seasoned martial art film enthusiast. There is an incredible variety of martial arts displayed during the course of the movie. "Fearless" is an emotional powerhouse, blending top grade martial arts choreography with stunning performances from all the talents--that, coupled with amazing scenery, mixed with rough almost POV shots of fighting, the hard hits just keep on coming. Every action sequence continues to outdo the one before it. "Fearless" is not a movie to miss, a must-add to anyone's collection.
