Come Drink With Me (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Historically significant and stunningly beautiful, "Come Drink With Me" features the original great teahouse fight that all other teahouse fights in martial arts cinema want to be. A classic.

Cheng Pei Pei is delightful, and the film is far ahead of its time in the coherence of the action sequences. This is very historically significant, but holds up even without that proviso.
Legendary Weapons Of China (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is an outstanding film testimony to the skills of the great Lau Kar Leung (Liu Chia Liang). This film has spiritual boxing, comedy, outstanding choreographed fights, and character appearances by Gordon Liu and Alexander Fu Sheng. The always underrated Hsiao Ho displays great acting and fighting throughout this feature.
This is a great film culminating in a grand fight finale between Liu Chia Liang and Liu Chia Yung! A must-have for any collection!

Yes it is an outstanding film! And Hsiao Ho is excellent and amazing. And he can really act! Five Stars!
I did not appreciate this properly when I first saw it. After learning more about Hong Kong film, Shaw Brothers and the brilliant Lau Kar Leung I now find it outstanding.
WOW!! From the moment I saw the trailer for "Black Belt" (or "Kuro-Obi", which I like saying by the way), I knew I was in for something special! The first 15 minutes alone stopped me in my tracks and compelled me to sit back and enjoy this work of art!
"Kuro-Obi" works on all fronts: story, script, cinematography, cast and especially the martial arts. Leads Akihito Yagi (Int'l. Meibukai Goju Ryu Karate Instructor) and Tatsuya Naka (Japan Karate Association General HQ (Corp) Instructor) surprisingly give acting and film fighting performances rarely found in one thespian. Once I saw their martial techniques, I knew I was looking at truly skilled martial artists.
Regarding the action, you won't find the highly dance-like Peking opera style of choreography like Hong Kong films, or the MTV style quick editing most US films use (to hide under trained stuntmen), but what you will find is very realistic fight scenes that are very entertaining!
"Kuro-Obi" is a great film that presents a story of honor, loyalty and how we must cope in a world of good and evil. Definitely a must-have for any fan of martial arts and/or film, period! Buy it, share it!

I knew these performers could do the moves, but they're very affecting actors, too.
"Cloverfield" is a bit of a conundrum for me. I'll say right off the bat that I really enjoyed it and was quite surprised by how good it was. However, while watching, I kept feeling like the kinetic, shaky, "low-budget Handycam" cinematography was really holding the movie back. It wasn't succeeding in a clever, "we found a creative new way to make a movie" way but was rather getting in the way of the film's own potential. And I don't mean this in an overly critical sense, more in a "this movie was good enough to have been given a decent budget" sense.
So why didn't they just make a "normal budget" movie with grown-up cameras? I later learned that the low budget was the film's primary selling point to the studios in the first place. Apparently the filmmakers basically approached the studio and said, "we can make a great horror movie for $X". To which the studio said, "Rock on!". Which they did.
And in that context, "Cloverfield" is nothing less than a spectacular success. However, personally, I'd rather have seen these talented filmmakers given a bit more cash to play with. The film does wind up feeling like a bit of a tease at times, as it's clearly lacking a lot of the big, impressive shots that we want to see.
Plus, I have to deduct some points for the ridiculous decisions some of these characters make. I know that's par for the course in a horror flick, but come on. It's not impossible to make a horror movie that's smart too. A little bit more effort in the script would have gone a long way. But anyway...
There you have it. The final choice, as always, is yours to make. I say check it out.

Completely agree. Saw it again on blu-ray recently and enjoyed it even more. An excellent film.
There is too much positive reviews of this movie, it's not that amazing. The special effects were done great but I felt like this was a better version of the USA "Godzilla" movie and both films were not that good.
Come Drink With Me (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A visually stunning film for the eyes, as every scene was filmed in detail. Of course this is what director King Hu is known for. The Dragon Dynasty DVD of "Come Drink With Me" is a must-have for all collections. The film itself shows the beauty and grace of Cheng Pei-Pei as she portrays the character Golden Swallow. Yueh Hua also turns in a great performance as the character Drunken Cat.
For some, the action sequences maybe a little too slow. However, people remember: this was filmed in 1966! This influential classic actually changed how future martial arts movies would be filmed. Along with the beautiful re-mastered print, the Dragon Dynasty DVD offers some great extras, such as interviews with the lead stars. This is one no collection should be without!

Even dated as it is, this one is an all time classic!
The Lady Assassin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Great plot and lots of action in this tale of court intrigue directed by Lu Chun-Ku.
Liu Yung gives a great performance as a ruthless Manchu prince that does anything and everything in order to become emperor. Once on the throne, he tries to eliminate all obstacles that threaten his power. Unfortunately for him the beautiful and determined Liu Hsueh-Hua stands in his way!
Great choreography and special effects. The fighting is sped up in some places, however the total package is fun to watch!
Blacula (product link) Action/Adventure / Horror One of the most popular blaxploitation horror flicks of the seventies. William Marshall stars as an African Prince on a diplomatic trip to Transylvania, in order to get help from Count Dracula in stopping the slave trade. What ensues is the vampire's curse placed on the Prince in a comic moment as the Count states, "You shall be known as Blacula".
Fast forward to the seventies as Marshall is awakened from his slumber by two gay antique dealers. From here the comic terror begins!
This film is hilarious! The dialogue is funny, the special effects are cheesy, and that seventies soul appeal is in full effect! If you like films that are so bad they're good and don't take this one so seriously, you will probably enjoy it.

I love this movie, always better than one expects.
Marco Polo (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Richard Harrison comes across as slightly confused as the pointless title character Marco Polo. This is a good flick, packed with excellent fighting and training sequences (plus a rare turn as a villain for Gordon Liu), but the inclusion of a white guy seems to be just a gimmick. The role of Marco Polo could easily have been made a generic Mongol general without affecting the story at all, since he just stands around and watches everyone else fighting for the whole movie.

I agree Denizen but him standing in the way so to speak still has no effect on the outcome of the classic gem still gets 5 stars from me.
JCVD (product link) Drama / Action/Adventure The best acting that JCVD has ever done. Possibly even his best movie so far. I enjoyed this movie very much. It was very refreshing to see JCVD in such a way where I thought his acting was more honest than ever. Well you can't be more honest than being yourself, and that's what JCVD did here.
If you're a fan of this iconic action movie star of the 90's, then I'd highly recommend watching this movie.

Yes, this is more for fans of (or people interested in) Jean-Claude than fans of his movies.
JCVD (product link) Drama / Action/Adventure Any fan of Van Damme should have this tagged as a must-see. Anyone else should watch it for the pure fact that it is a very good movie, using a storyline that wouldn't be out of place at Raindance or Cannes (which, in fact it wasn't) and utilizing a charismatic and well known actor playing completely against type--despite playing himself. Very well directed and good characters make this an excellent film to watch.
Shaolin And Wu Tang (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Good film starring Liu Chia Hui/Gordon Liu, and directed by Liu Chia Liang. Fans of Gordon Liu will enjoy this one. We have the basic revenge plot in which Gordon Liu becomes a Shaolin monk, however the twist is that his co-star Adam Cheng also becomes a Wu Tang monk.
Good frineds in the begining, these two are learning the title styles from their respective masters until tragedy strikes. The Prince, portrayed by villain supreme Wang Lung Wei, hatches a plot to learn both styles and see which is the best no matter who gets hurt! This leads to both stars joining the title monasteries, which in turn leads to a grand finale that demonstrates which style is the best.
A very good film, with good action sequences. Again highly recommended for all Gordon Liu fans.
I saw this such a long time ago that I can't add much - but how could anyone not like the three leads? Gordon Liu is a great fighter, Adam Cheng a convincing swordsman, and Wang Lung Wei among the finest villains.
Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Prachya Pinkaew, Panna Rittikrai, and Tony Jaa have put together an outstanding martial arts feature showcasing Muay Thai combined with some awesome acrobatics.
The plot is simple as soon to-be-ordained priest Tony Jaa ventures forth into Bangkok, in order to retrieve the head of the village idol Ong-Bak. The head was stolen by unscrupulous antique thieves. What follows is Tony Jaa's unique Muay Thai style, combined with fantastic acrobatic moves, as he smashes the bad guys! The club fight, chase on carts, and cave fight were outstanding and well choreographed. I loved the use of slow motion combined with live action during the end fights!
Tony Jaa displays great screen presence like the legendary Bruce Lee! A must-have for all action fans!

I don't think Tony has a match among the martial artists today! Ten Stars!
This film came as a great shock - showing what screen fighting could and should be. It remains to be seen if anyone can match Tony Jaa in the present day.
So Close (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Stylish, if brainless, action fluff starring three of the loveliest ladies this side of "Charlie's Angels". A total guilty pleasure.

Accurate, but the killing off of Shu Qi earlier and expecting the others to carry the finale was a crime.
Black Belt (product link) Martial Arts / Drama An outstanding action-melodrama that deals with the zen of karate. Three students go down three different paths, learning the true physical and spiritual concepts of karate after the death of their master.
This is a truly refreshing and well acted film. The fighting is crisp, fresh, and original! No wires or special effects, just plain outstanding fight choreography that highlights the stark realism of the fights!
The cast does a fantastic job from top to bottom in creating what I consider one of the best films of the decade. I highly recommend this film for those that want to be entertained. Some may think there is too much drama but this is a well rounded film exploring what karate truly is.
This film is a beast. It managed to muscle its way into my top 10 favorite martial arts movies of all time. No MA film collection is complete without this one.
This falls into the "kind of recommended" category. The film has many strong points, but just as many weak points. The bottom line is that if you're looking for some truly impressive kickboxing fights, this is a must-see.
The film's most elaborate and well-choreographed fights take place in the ring, where the prison's inmates square off against each other in illegal fights set up by the Russian mafia. These are really the centerpieces of the film, and Scott Adkins--who plays the super-super-evil antagonist Uli Boyka--is phenomenally talented at this type of screen fighting. However, this is also one of the film's shortcomings, since we basically see one fighting style over and over again.
There are several other fight scenes that take place throughout the prison, as our hero (Michael Jai White) is forced to defend himself against Boyka's gang. These are mostly brief and therefore not very noteworthy.
We won't go into the many suspensions of disbelief that this film expects its audience to perform. Suffice it to say that the film's logic is shaky at best. But if you're just here to see some action, and you're a fan of "in the ring" kickboxing (and you don't mind waiting for it to come in spurts), this one should satisfy nicely.
