Viva Erotica (product link)
Comedy / Drama

What a funny little film! An "arthouse" film about an "arthouse" film. An out-of-work art-film director (Leslie Cheung) sets aside his moral qualms and face financial reality. He agrees to make a porno film, and tries to incorporate his artistic touches to it. Hsu Chi, as always was great as the leading lady in Leslie's film. With all that make-up, I didn't recognize her at first. I think this was one of her first movies, and she does not disappoint (even if you're not watching this movie to see her get naked!). Viva Erotica tightly defines its characters, especially Leslie and his girlfriend (Karen Mok). Although this movie has "arthouse" written all over it with sometimes excessive symbolism, it is funny and easy enough to understand for mainstream enjoyment. Recommended.

She Shoots Straight (product link)
Girls With Guns / Action/Adventure

I started watching this movie thinking it would be pure brainless action. Well, there's actually a pretty decent plot that gets quite emotional. There's action sprinkled with plot during the first three quarters of the movie. The last quarter or so is crazy, mind-bending combat. You won't believe what these women do. I think the fight sequences at the end of this film top any of the fights in other "girls with guns" movies. The directing approach was interesting, blending some slow-mo symbolism in to create a surreal effect.

Ballistic Kiss (product link)
Action/Adventure / Bullet Ballet

Ballistic Kiss is a dark and dreary picture masterfully painted by director and principle actor Yen. Perhaps one of the most under looked and under appreciated films in Hong Kong cinema, Ballistic Kiss achieves a seldom surpassed level of intimate connection between the viewer and primary actors Yen and Annie Wu. Rarely do action films establish complete character development. By the end of the film, I felt as though I knew everything about Cat (Yen) and Carrie (Wu). And not just know them, but know them intimately. For those of you eager to compare this movie to, John Woo's "The Killer," I feel that although it is one of the best movies of all time, in it's standard 111 minute release, it failed to completely examine the relationship between Jeff and Jennie. Ballistic Kiss, in my opinion is a more complete movie, character-wise. However, I difficult to compare Ballistic Kiss to "The Killer" because they are fundamentally different movies. Ballistic Kiss conveys a darker sense of emotion. This is strongly reflected in gritty action sequences void of blatant symbolism which propagates throughout the refined action scenes in "The Killer." Where "The Killer" emphasizes loyalty, "Ballistic Kiss" emphasizes despair and imbalance. Yet, ironically, the endings of both movies are drastically different. You'll have to watch the movie to see what I mean.

Skinny Tiger And Fatty Dragon (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

A lesser known, but quite good and funny film about two troublesome cops. Sammo provides the action, Karl Maka does the comedy. There's some truly hilarious scenes in this movie which features comedy that I think Western audiences WILL understand. There's a typical plot focusing on the cops' vigilante approach to punishing a vengeful drug lord. The action is decent throughout, albeit a little choppy. The finale is great and shouldn't be missed. All-in-all, a good action-comedy which should entertain a wide range of audiences.

Heart Of Dragon (product link)
Drama / Martial Arts
I personally consider this DVD to be must-see for any Jackie Chan or Sammo Hung fan. Everybody knows these guys can fight. But many people, especially those of us in the West, don't appreciate Jackie and Sammo's ability to act in a more serious scenarios. I suppose you could consider this film a drama, but there's enough fight scenes and destruction so you don't forget that it's a Jackie Chan film. The ending fight scene, in particular is pretty good. If you know anyone who thinks Jackie Chan films are all fluff and no substance, you need to show him or her this movie. A wonderful mix of action and drama.

The Prodigal Son (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Very cool movie. Chronicles the martial arts adventures of the son of a wealthy family. During the course of the movie, he transforms from an egotistic, overconfident boy who only thinks he has martial arts ability into a honorable man who does have martial arts ability. True character development, stunning sets and what is widely considered to be the most authentic martial arts content ever put into a movie. Don't expect to see fights in this movie without repercussions. You'll see lots of blood, serious pain and lots of bruises. This isn't to say this movie is a gore-fest. It's not. It's just very real and very authentic. It tingles the spine to watch. The final fight is simply a classic. This movie is timeless. Although it was made 17 years ago, it could have been made this year.

Battle Creek Brawl (product link)
Action/Adventure / Comedy

Why many Jackie Chan fans don't like this movie is beyond me. First of all, this is actually an American film; Jackie's first if I remember correctly. Because the film's director was an American, I think many JC fans have some sort of bias toward this movie

I absolutely loved it. It's a period film, like JC's Project A movies, and is set in 1930 Chicago. The film starts off with JC doing pull-up exercises 30 feet above the ground on a metal rod. Throughout the film, we see Jackie exercising his kung-fu skills in odd, yet amazing ways.

One memorable fight scene comes early on when Jackie beats four guys up. His father told him to stop fighting, but instead of stopping, Jackie simply made it look as if he was taking all the punishment while dishing out none. In the end, the four bad guys are all limping, and Jackie made it all look like an accident.

Another cool scene was a roller-skating race which remarkably looks similar to the "Roller Derby" they show on TV these days -- only this skating race featured real fights and a brutal finish.

The final fight sequences are a lot of fun. We get to see Jackie take on guys three times his size, blinding them with his incredible quickness and agility. Jackie frustrates one opponent so much that he tries to run him over with a car!

All-in-all, this film contained a remarkable number of laughs, good fight scenes and an interesting plot. The subtitles, while intelligible, leave something to be desired. For example, they use "hair" instead of "heir." Still, I often find subtitles to be another source of humor when I watch Hong Kong films.

The 7 Grandmasters (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
Sang Kuan Chun (Jack Long) is an old kung fu master who is getting ready to retire from martial arts. He is satisfied that he's mastered the martial arts and is the best in China. But just as he is about to put up his new signboard and call it quits, he receives a note alleging that he's not the best. Thus begins his journey for one last challenge with each of the Seven Grandmasters to prove his superiority.

As Sang Kuan Chun and his three students travel from one challenge to the next, the foursome acquires a fifth--a young man named Siu Ying (Lee I Ming) who wants desperately to train under master Sang Kuan Chun to avenge his father's death. So he tags along, despite the master's insistence that he will not accept any more students.

Eventually we learn more about the master's past. His own teacher, before he passed away, left him the secret book of The Pai Mei Nine Strikes. However a masked man soon stole several pages of the book, leaving only six strikes. So, somewhere out there, is this unknown man, and he has the final three strikes of Pai Mei, which are supposedly the most deadly and can beat even the other six strikes.

And, since no old school martial arts flick would be complete without the "groveling idiot student becomes kung fu genius" transformation, master Sang Kuan Chun soon accepts Siu Ying and teaches him the six known strikes of Pai Mei. This all leads up to an exciting climax, where we learn the identity of the masked man who stole the Pai Mei final strikes and the identity of the man who killed Siu Ying's father, and master Sang Kuan Chun challenges his final deadly opponent to a duel in the hopes of retiring.

A very solid old school kung fu actioner, with a constant supply of acrobatic fight sequences, "The Seven Grandmasters" is renowned as a classic for good reason.

The Barbarian Invasions (product link)
Drama / Comedy

An odd but engaging film about a lecherous old man's last days with his friends and family. There's not much plot; it's mostly just a kind of celebration of the man's life--which seems to have consisted mostly of extramarital sexual affairs, sexual harassment, sexual fantasies, mediocre teaching, and masturbation (in that order)--which unfortunately we didn't find to be all that fascinating or celebration-worthy.

The film isn't terrific or bad, it kind of perpetuates itself as much by momentum as anything else. The acting is very good overall, and the subject matter (a dying man) is hard not to empathize with.

But actor Stephane Rousseau's emotionless performance as the dying man's son seemed out of place amid this otherwise very impressive cast. All the other actors really make their characters shine with personality and uniqueness, despite the fact that we only get to know them through short scenes mostly in a hospital room. Stephane Rousseau on the other hand has plenty of more complex scenes and the space to really give his character more of an arc, yet we didn't feel that he accomplished what he could have with this role. His under-acting was really the only standout low point in the film for us.

So don't come to the film looking for some big transformation on anyone's part. And certainly don't come to the film if you don't want to see a physically unappealing, dirty old man reminiscing endlessly about his past sexual exploits. This film works best, we suppose, as a simple showcase of normal, flawed people as they accompany a normal, flawed friend through the end of his life. So if you're big on sitting back and just observing people being people, you could do much worse.

Double Nickels [10-Movie Set] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Crime

The story centers around a couple of highway cops, one of which is actually named Smokey and spends his mornings being chased by cops (?), speeding on his motorcycle on his way to a restaurant where his girlfriend works and where he changes from his civvies into his police uniform, which for some reason lives in a closet at the restaurant. If you're wondering if we're on crack; the answer is "no", that's actually in the movie. "Why?" you ask? Good freakin' question.

The story basically goes like this...these two cops never give anyone a ticket, and the restaurant-changing cop usually just pulls women over to hit on them awkwardly. But one time they pull a man over for speeding. Once he explains that he's a repo man, they let him go, and ask how they can get into the car repo-ing business as well!? Soon enough they're spending their spare time repo-ing cars for this guy, who seems to just kind of pick out cars at random that he wants them to repo. They don't seem to have any idea of or care about who they're actually working for; and, being cops, they don't find any of this suspicious at all. Needless to say, it turns out that they're just stealing cars "unknowingly", and then they have to try to bust the car-theft ring-leader who "tricked" them into being retarded part-time car-thieving dumb-ass cops in the first place.

Along the way, there are a lot of car chases, and seemingly stream-of-consciousness dialog performed by the star/writer/director/stunt driver/restaurant-changer. The former are surprisingly enjoyable if silly; the latter we could have done without. But hey, as long as we get our fill of car chases, who gives a damn about the laughably irrational characters or the confusingly half-baked plot, right? Right? Ugh...

Dead Or Alive: Final (product link)
Crime / Action/Adventure

The film takes place in Yokohama. The year is 2346. Humans co-habit the Earth with androids and are forced to follow the oppressive laws mandated by Woo (Richard Cheung), the gay Chinese leader of this dictatorial world. After passing a law that makes mandatory the use of a birth control drug, those committed to return Yokohama to the heterosexual ways of the "old world" decide to form a group of rebels to fight Woo and his government agents.

If you're a fan of Takashi Miike, you know what to expect: A ridiculous plot with crazy violence, sex, and drugs, but also a frantic and unique visual style that somehow transcends the pulpy story.

If you've never seen a Miike film, and are easily offended by gratuitous paganism, this is probably not a movie you'll enjoy. However, should you enjoy celluloid insanity and tongue-in-cheek weirdness, you'll probably want to watch this orgy of over-the-top flamboyancy.

Godzilla X Mechagodzilla (product link)
Science Fiction / Action/Adventure

Back for his 26th appearance, Godzilla returns to face a familiar foe with new abilities, Mechagodzilla. This is the fourth entry into the so-called "Shinsei" or "Alternate Reality" series of Godzilla films, and although--like others in the collection--it works as a stand-alone movie, some will see it as a sequel to "Godzilla vs. Megaguirus".

Constructed by the Japanese Self Defense Force to rid Japan of Godzilla, Mechagodzilla is a bio-mechanical weapon constructed in part by using some of the monster's own skeleton as a blueprint. Mechagodzilla does not fly this time around, and is instead transported by two jets called the Shirasagi.

Fast-paced kinetic fight scenes clearly influenced by contemporary Japanese anime and wrestling like the WWF dominate this Godzilla film. If you liked the last Godzilla film, "GMK", you should like "GXMG". The Godzilla suit has been remade and returns to a more traditional look with pupils in his eyes. Look out for beautiful Japanese swimsuit model Yumiko Shaku as the Mechagodzilla pilot, and for the cameo of popular baseball player, Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui of New York Yankees fame.

Essential if you're a Michelle Yeoh fan, Royal Warriors has some incredible fight scenes while Michelle was in her prime (this movie was made in 1986). Michael Wong (from John Woo's "Once A Thief") and especially hard-hitting Japanese action star Henry Sanada provide a great supporting cast.

This is an epic film. And if you're a Jet Li fan, a must-see because it's his first film he had a starring role in. When released, Shao Lin Temple broke all box office records in Hong Kong, China and Korea. The film was banned in Taiwan due to political reasons.

Being an eighteen-year-old Mainland Chinese film, the picture quality isn't as quite as good as most Hong Kong films of the same age. There's nothing that can be done about that. However, the picture is very acceptable and the English subtitles are excellent.

The action is spectacular and the story is good for a kung fu movie. I thought Jet's acting was wonderful. Had I not known before watching this movie, I never would have guessed this was his first major role in a film.

Many of the scenes of this movie were filmed in the actual Shao Lin temple. However, there are a few sequences that were obviously filmed on a sound stage with paintings depicting mountains used as a backdrop.

One of the cool things about this DVD is a very rare supplemental documentary about Jet Li. It has footage of Jet as a young boy, a teenager, a young man and also shows Jet's family. I've never seen any thing like this before. After Jet became a star, he also became extremely private.
