"Heroes Of The East" is the story of a simple argument between a man (Gordon Liu) and his Japanese wife that leads to an inflammation of an age-old Chinese/Japanese grudge match and one man taking on the challenge against seven Japanese masters, each an expert in a different discipline, ranging from karate to ninjitsu.
"Heroes Of The East" embodies some of the best of the kung fu movie genre, and remains unique among its peers. It's an excellent example of Lau Kar Leung's ability to draw the viewer into his meticulous fight choreography, with compelling storytelling seamlessly incorporated into the action. It also stands as perhaps the greatest match up of Japanese and Chinese fighters. It's all the more impressive that he's able to pull this off so well without resorting to any real bloodshed, death, or dismemberment. There is a place for that, as I am sure Chang Cheh and Sony Chiba would argue, but Lau rises above this and just gives us fantastic martial arts action packaged in a very accesible story, even for non-fu fans.
This is one of the better Shaw efforts and definitely worth purchasing for fans of the genre. Recommended.
"The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter" remains one of the best kung fu films in the world. Seven brothers and the father of the Yang family, known for their spear fighting skills, are betrayed and led into a trap in battle. They're betrayed by Pan Mei, who was in league with the Yangs, but now fears them as a threat to his own power. Pan Mei searches for the two remaining brothers, one going insane (Alexander Fu Sheng), and the other seeks to become a monk (Gordon Liu). The monks do not see his temperament fit to be a monk, but in a painful display of determination, he is eventually accepted, despite his needs to for revenge for the deaths of his brothers.
In the middle production, Alexander Fu Sheng, the original lead man of "Eight Diagram Pole Fighter", tragically died in a car accident at the age of 29. Wanting to complete the production, changes and rewriting the script were made so that Fu Sheng's completed scenes were to remain intact, and bringing Gordon Liu to the forefront of the plot. The result is an excellent kung fu film, and a fantastic finale for Alexander Fu Sheng's movie career.
The movie is dark with no humour at all. Some really nasty things happen throughout the film, and Fu Sheng and Liu's performances can be best seen as really pissed off.
Now for the fight action, there is a good amount of it, and master director and action choreographer Lau Kar Leung delivers some real gems, with emphasis on spear and pole combat.
This is a worthy immediate purchase and is absolutely recommended.
Detective Sergeant Jun Ma (Yen) plays a hard-hitting cop who talks with his fists and isn't intimidated to break some heads to complete his job. Good as he is at his job, there is one Vietnamese gang that has eluded the scales of justice. In order to get some leverage on them, he plants a mole, Wilson, (Koo) to infiltrate the gang and after years of service gains their trust. Things go wrong when a big bust of the gang begins. Wilson's cover is blown and becomes the target of the gang. It's up to Dective Ma to protect his partner and to remain within the limits of the law.
"Flash Point" won't dethrone "SPL", but it is a good action movie. The only flaw is the plot lacks originality, but it's fresher than most of the other corrupt cop scenarios. It's lighter on the story than "SPL" but lacks a signature fight as between Wu Jing vs. Yen and Yen vs. Sammo. As far as the action goes, it isn't a bonanza loaded with kung-fu, but what action is there is enough to get one's blood pumping.
There are only two main fight scenes to mention where Yen adds a touch of originality, incorporating MMA mixed martial arts in his choreography, utilizing grappling and trapping rather than his signature kicks. This works exceptionally well for the film's atmosphere and final showdown between Yen and Chou, which is quite impressive, and reminiscent of the fight between Ken Lo and Jackie Chan in "Drunken Master 2" where both combatants give it their all for the price of victory. "Flash Point" isn't a perfect movie in the classical film sense--it could be better, it could be worse--but it is a good movie that doesn't shortchange the viewer in any department. "Flash Point" is definitely a step in the right direction, and I look further to future collaborations between Yen and Yip.

"Flash Point" doesn't have an original story, but the action scenes are amazing.
Police Story (product link) Martial Arts / Comedy Chan plays supercop Ka Kui who, along with his squad, arrests Chee, one of Hong Kong's biggest drug dealers. He's assigned to watch over Chee's former employee who becomes a key witness. The key witness is the beautiful and cunning Salina, played by the (still) beautiful screen legend Brigitte Lin. Salina manages to elude Ka Kui and leaves him no evidence, so Chee is set free and frames Ka Kui for murder, therefore putting him on the run. A beaten Ka Kui faces Chee and his goons for a final climatic fight in a mall. Must be seen to be believed. Jackie made up for his previous failed American films such as "Battle Creek Brawl" and "The Protector" with "Police Story". The movie will always be one of his best, not only because of Chan's hard work and effort on and off camera, but due to the stunt players who made this a sheerly energetic and thoroughly enjoyable film. Recommended.

The story is simple, but the action is insane. Jackie Chan & his stunt team are amazing in this picture. The mall fight scenes are impressive.
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die." - Roy Batty.
"Blade Runner" is based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? One of the most visually influential science fiction films ever made, it's easy to understand it's impact on the films that follow it, particularly in the genre of science fiction. See any classic works of Japanese anime( Akira, Ghost in the Shell, etc.) and you'll see "Blade Runner's" influence in nearly every frame. "Blade Runner" is as much a hard boiled film noir detective story as it is science fiction.
Los Angeles, 2019. Deckard (Harrison Ford) plays a hard-cop who has disturbing criminals to retire. They are called Replicants, used for slave labor to build off world colonies where healthy humans are migrating to now the planet is polluted. Their presence on Earth is illegal, and it's up to Deckard to find them and shoot them. All good science fiction should ask the question "What does it mean to be human?" What makes "Blade Runner" work so well is that it dwells on this question.

Ridley Scott made a classic film with "Blade Runner". The movie is eerie and has great noir feel, I really love how this movie feels & looks. The city is so vibrant, and the cast is great.
Some fans enjoy John Woo for the director's action choreography. Many, however, dislike his movies because the action or the emotions (perhaps both) are "over the top". Both the action-lovers and the Woo-haters miss the point. If John Woo's earlier films were bullet ballets, then "Face/Off" is an opera. Woo's action sequences are not "over the top" because he's not only interested in telling stories; rather, he wants the audience to absorb the pleasure of watching the human body in motion. John Woo's inspiration and influence comes from Hollywood musicals, so his visual style is graceful and kinetic, even in comedies like "Once A Thief".
Even though "Face/Off" doesn't have Chow Yun-Fat, it has a completeness and emotional resonance that puts it at the top of Woo's oeuvre with "A Better Tomorrow", "The Killer", and "Once A Thief". After years filled with "heroic bloodshed", Woo showed us the "heroic healing" in which he believes.

"Face-Off" is the closest film that Americans will ever get from the real energy of master director John Woo. The movie has an original story, with great actors to pull off the madness. The Woo trademark, with doves, two guns, & slow-mo are impressive.
The Magnificent Butcher (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Speaking of shining stars, it would be a travesty to go through this review without mentioning Mui Sang Fan in his role as the drunken beggar. Forget DRUNKEN MASTER, this guy is the real deal. In appearance, much like Sammo, he is a round, little butterball of a man, but once he gets the wine in him, look out! Some of the more memorable scenes in this movie showcase the beggar doing what he does best: drinking and fighting.
Magnificent Butcher is a classic "old school" kung fu movie with a bit of comedy mixed in. It's a must have for fans of Sammo Hung. Go but it now. Recommended.

Shaolin Master Killer (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure The remastered [Celestial] version of "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" looks fantastic.
