Blood: The Last Vampire [2000] (product link)
Animation / Horror

Despite the short length of this (it was intended to be a pilot of sorts for the "Blood+" anime series), it is still a great anime. It has my kind of vampire: seven feet tall, giant claws, a mouthful of dagger-like teeth, an urge to brutally kill anybody for blood, and can only be killed by being cut in half. This is what vampires should be: terrifying monsters, not moody teens with too much eyeliner and a habit of sparkling. Recommended for anyone who is tired of the "Twilight" style of vampires with feelings.

The Monster Squad (product link)
Comedy / Horror

I've always been a big fan of this movie and admittedly a bigger fan of this than "Goonies", which shares many similarities. I'm a big fan of the Universal Movie Monsters, and to see them all together is always a treat. The movie manages to capture a lot of the feel of those 50s sci-fi movies where the teens have to do battle against the baddies that the authorities don't believe in, but with a more 80s sensibility.

Rewatching the movie after many years, I managed to get several of the more dirty jokes that flew over my head when I was a kid and that shock me that they got away with putting them in a "kids' movie". If they had any of the more risque jokes in a modern movie aimed at kids and young teens, it would cause outrage. And with all the violence, this would have undoubtedly gotten a solid R rating, but I guess we were made of tougher stuff back in the day and didn't scare as easily--possibly it explains the way I am today. A wonderful trip down the 80s lane that is definitely worth the watch.

Red Cliff 2: The Decisive Battle (product link)
Drama / Historical

Exceptional conclusion to the "Red Cliff" saga--"duology" just sounds weird, and according to spell check isn't even a word.

I really enjoy a good epic movie and this, in my opinion, ranks up there with the best of them. I think back to "Lord of the Rings", mainly because of the epic scale everything is done on, complete with a huge final battle, but thankfully ends once and not six times. Continuing on the previous entry's streak of epic filmmaking, this movie doesn't let the viewer down with the epic final confrontation. It manages to juggle several parallel storylines effectively and doesn't leave any of them to just trail off.

John Woo now has another sterling example of prime filmmaking to hang on his mantel, right next to such great gun-fu movies as "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled", earning him a spot as a top rate director and erasing such classics as "Windtalkers" and "Broken Arrow" from his legacy. This continues my personal belief that great Hong Kong directors (and Asian directors in general) should just stay away from coming to the US, because their talent gets hopelessly lost among studio executives, prima dona actors, and competition with directors whose highest achievement is music videos but who know how to lick boots. They may not make dumptruck loads of money, but at least they get to make quality product, and in the end you can't take the money with you but your movies will live on for the ages.

Red Cliff (product link)
Drama / Historical

First rate historical war drama. More in the vein of "Braveheart", with historical facts stretched a bit to make a good story, rather rather than "300", with silliness and leather shorts. The movie really harkens back to the epics of old with the vast sets and ambitious storytelling. It gives you a cast of interesting and rich characters that invest in this movie a personal touch that ridiculous historical movies like "300" completely lacked. For the lengthy runtime, the movie moves nimbly and the time passes before you know it. I do like that they decided to make two movies about this subject rather than one, but even individually they both make excellent movies in their own right and together make for one truly awesome epic that is worth getting.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (product link)
Science Fiction / Drama

Nightmarish Japanese Cyberpunk crowning achievement. The first instinct is to compare this to David Lynch's industrial wasteland tale of "Eraserhead", but I think it owes a great deal more to the work of Fritz Lang in films such as "Metropolis" and the biomechanical works of HR Giger as anything else.

It is almost a silent movie, with the surreal images telling the twisted story much more than any words can. It really is the ultimate embodiment of the anxiety found in cyberpunk of technology taking over our souls. This actually up and does it.

The surreal nature of the movie and the rather grinding industrial score will drive away many who aren't ready for a movie to visually assault them in such a way, but this really is the ultimate of Japanese live-action cyberpunk--the tiny budget, the big ideas, the absolute insanity of it all.

Samurai Princess (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

The fact that this film is from the warped minds that brought you "The Machine Girl" and "Tokyo Gore Police" should give you a really good idea of what to expect when going into this movie. It delivers. It delivers with both barrels in a spray of gore and a dump truck load's worth of latex body parts.

Apparently having learned from "Tokyo Gore Police", they stuck with a ridiculous parade of gore as the primary plot motivator here and kept the story short, sweet, and to the point: Girl who was pieced together from her 11 friends as some sort of Bionic Woman from hell seeks revenge on those who killed her. Simple, straightforward, and full of crowd-pleasing over-the-top gore battles.

The setting is the Tokugawa Shogunate of the future--who knows, maybe in 100 years they'll come back to power so we have a smattering of swords, Harajuku-inspired samurai fashions, and a steampunk sensibility. I can see this easily raising the hackles of many viewers, as its predecessor, "Tokyo Gore Police", did. There is a quirky low budget quality to this movie that either you'll embrace for its oddness or hate for the exact same reason. I immediately liked this movie, I liked "Tokyo Gore Police" as well, so maybe there is no accounting for taste. Because of the variety and speed at which the gore flies at you in this movie, we have guys getting their skeletons punched from their bodies, guys turned into fountains of spurting blood, breast balls of doom, killer fur-covered guitars, and more.

"Samurai Princess" cuts (pun intended) to the chase much faster than "Tokyo Gore Police" and has a style that honestly is second to none. It's worth checking out for gorehounds and fans of wacky cinema.

The Divine Weapon (product link)
Action/Adventure / Historical

Very fun epic historical action movie. Hands down the best part is the end when they finally fire the hwacha. Having seen one of these beasts in a museum, I've always wanted to know what it must have been like to actually fire one, let alone several.

This movie is more than just gratuitous hwacha action, there is a really good story behind it about the making of the hwacha and all the danger, court intrigues, and sword fights that went along with it. The excellent story and top notch acting really glues the story together and makes it an excellent film. If you've ever wanted to know what would happen if somebody fired hundreds of rocket-propelled arrows at you at the same time, this movie will answer it.

The House Of The Devil (product link)
Horror / Thriller

Often I complain about horror movies lacking atmosphere and being nothing but a series of startle scares that do nothing for the overall feel of the movie. "The House Of The Devil" is the exact opposite, a movie with very few startle scares but an effective and welcome slow build of tension to the rather predictable climax. But with a name like "The House Of The Devil" you can really guess what is coming. There are a couple of really good twists in the movie, one that really surprised me but good.

The movie is all about noises and creeping dread, something you feel if you spend any time in a big old house that you aren't familiar with. It does a good job with its 80s setting--most modern horror movies rip off 80s movies but few decide to actually set it in the 80s. A likeable main character really helps make the movie work--she isn't too much of a victim nor is she too much of a pain in the ass. She really is the glue that holds the movie together, a natural normal person sucked into a very spooky world. The ending isn't all that great. With all this build up it's pretty difficult to satisfy everybody, but it does the job pretty well.

It isn't perfect, but when compared to pretty much every other domestic horror movie I have seen this year, it beats them all hands down. This is one of those rare occasions that I have found myself agreeing with the hype surrounding a movie. Normally a movie that is hyped too much is always desperately trying to compensate for being junk, but this one actually deserves a lot of the hype it received. Not perfect, but still a very outstanding horror movie in a time when more horror movies like this are needed.

Audition (product link)
Horror / Art

It's very, very rare that a movie can scare me. After over 2000 horror movies, I've pretty much seen it all and lived to tell the story. I usually judge how "scary" a movie is based on the reactions of my friends who aren't as insane as I am. If a movie can scare them, it scores big points. "Audition" managed to scare one of my friends so badly he stopped watching horror movies for almost a year, and frankly I can't blame him. This movie managed to even make me spooked.

The movie is one massive build up. From the moment we see our girl sitting in her apartment staring holes through the phone waiting for the call--only to learn she has a guy tied up in a laundry bag in the background--to the climax, this movie is filmmaking gold. It also scores big points from me because I have a phobia for needles, which is good because I like it when a movie gets under your skin and tortures you, because well, it's a movie, and a horror movie at that, which is exactly what movies should be.

This was my first Takashi Miike movie (my second was "Ichi", kinda' a tone shift there), and I've been a big fan of his ever since. He knows how to make one hell of a good movie, and this is probably his finest in terms of raw, jagged, nerve-shredding terror.

One Foot Crane (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Stock revenge storyline but it is executed better than most. Strong fights and a good smattering of various weapons and techniques help keep things varied and different while the movie retains its standard revenge plot. It's a four-star movie if you aren't a big fan of Lily Li, but if you are a fan of hers, like me, it gets bumped an extra star to 5.

Science Fiction / Action/Adventure

Great Godzilla fun set to a swinging surf soundtrack. I'm a big fan of surf music, so watching Godzilla beat up a giant Lobster escaped from Hell's version of the Red Lobster lobster tank is plenty of fun. Here is where we first see Godzilla being friends with man (or at least one good looking native girl) rather than the absolute bane of man. It's classic kaiju fun and I'm a big kaiju fan.

Oh! My Zombie Mermaid (product link)
Horror / Comedy

This is a great deal like Minoru Kawasaki's "Calamari Wrestler". It deals with the most melodramatic and ridiculous of worlds, the world of professional wrestling. Only Japan seems able to truly capture the over-the-top melodrama of pro wrestling, with its code of the warrior attitude and silly plot twists.

The story is completely out there, and you really just need to go with it--don't think about it just let it take you on its magical, insane joyride. The movie starts off with a bang, literally. They blow a house up after a twenty-man free for all, which really should give you a pretty good idea of where they are heading. The beginning reminded me a lot of those old "WWF In Your House" ads where the wrestlers would destroy somebody's living room in the commercials.

The movie's main star, Shinya Hashimoto, a real life pro-wrestler, does an excellent job with his role, mainly because he is being himself in a more insane story than usual. It really helps the movie, unlike such pro-wrestler vehicles as "Suburban Commando", where the wrestlers are out of their element. To get the most out of this, you need some familiarity with wrestling. You need to understand the ebb and flow of its particular brand of storytelling. If you liked "Calamari Wrestler" but wanted more insane destructive fights out of it, then this will be your wacky cup of tea.

Pure Jackie Chan fun, a movie that is created for Jackie Chan, propelled by Jackie Chan, directed by Jackie Chan, starring Jackie Chan, and probably catered by Jackie Chan, too. The fun energy of the making of the film really translates through to the finished project. True there isn't a great deal of martial arts until the end, but the end more than makes up for it with over-the-top energy and awesome, bone-crunching fights. This is a pure guilty pleasure for me, the height of Cat III guilty pleasure. Essentially a "Robocop" knock-off with a chick instead of Peter Weller, which from a purely aesthetic standpoint is a much better choice. X-Cross (product link)
Horror / Thriller

I loved this movie. It has been too long since a movie came out of left field and delighted me like this. I love when I go into a movie thinking it's going to be a decent movie, and it not only turns me on my head (the plot would turn anybody's head) but thrills me to be turned on my head.

This is a movie that needs to be watched twice just to catch everything. The plot is non-linear and that will probably throw many people, especially those who are used to domestic movies with their spoon-fed plots. You need to pay attention to what's going on and allow yourself to be thrown around by the movie. I love this kind of movie that plays with time/space, but in a manageable way.

The Japanese really have a good firm hold on how to do this and do it right, with good pacing, a really darkly funny story, and plenty of surprises. It reminded me a lot of the anime series "Baccano", with its love of having a single story being told by different points of few at the same time, and times future and past often overlapping one another. It's a smart movie and I love smart movies and it is a shame that too often smart movies are hard to come by.

42nd Street Forever Vol. 5 (product link)
Documentary / Thriller

Starts off with a bang with several martial arts-related titles, including "Mad Monkey Kung Fu" and Sonny Chiba's "The Bodyguard" (it would have been amusing to have Sonny Chiba star in Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard"--probably would have had more ass kicking and less singing). It earns points right out of the gate for having more martial arts trailers than any other trailer compilation I have seen. It has a good mix of action, horror, and thriller movies, plus the annoying ten minutes in the last third where they feel compelled to throw in a few family movie trailers, which I've always felt breaks flow with the rest of the drive-in sleaze fare. Another great collection of trailers from "42nd Street Forever".

Marebito (product link)
Horror / Mystery

A wonderful example of atmosphere making a horror movie. The film is claustrophobic, hypnotic, and exceptionally strange, filled with plenty of "did I just see that?" moments. Not entirely a horror movie, more a mix of horror/myth/vampire/plain straightjacket crazy. I really loved the wandering through the subterranean world underneath the city, which was at once both modern and yet hearkened back to Greco-Roman mythology of journeying into the underworld, complete with creepy dead guy with lantern. It's much more a horror movie whose overall feeling of isolation, gloom, and madness makes you feel creepy, almost like you are going to catch something from watching it, as compared to the filmmaker showing you a ghost, a guy with chainsaw dripping with gore, or a cat jumping out of the closet to make you scared.

The Mad Butcher (product link)
Horror / Dark Comedy

The most lighthearted movie about a guy who grinds people up into sausage.

Yes, it is a strange statement, but this movie--a mix of 60s German Krimi films, "There's A Secret In My Soup" cannibal movies, and comedy--manages to keep the mood light and it really makes the movie work. The movie is really held together by Victor Buono, most famous for "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane", as the corpulent butcher who makes the best sausages in Vienna and the many funny outfits he wears. The movie is amazingly blood-free. All the killings are strangulations and, aside from a few scenes where meat is butchered, it's all gore-free. True, if you are a vegan you'll freak, but what can you do?

The movie has a certain charm about it, it doesn't take itself seriously and has fun with what should be a rather gruesome concept. If you check this out, be sure to get the Something Weird DVD of it so you can check out the great extras including a short called "Cannibal Massage", which is one of the oddest short movies I have seen--now that is a disturbing cannibal movie.

Put 5 Deadly Venoms in a movie, add some disabilities, and throw in a couple dozen dead bodies, and you have a recipe for another excellent Shaw Brothers movie. This joins "The 5 Deadly Venoms", "Masked Avengers", and "Flag Of Iron" as my favorite Venom movies. The Lodger (product link)
Crime / Thriller

This is Alfred Hitchcock's first truly Hitchcock film. He made two films before this but this was the first one to set out his signature trademarks: blondes as damsels in distress, fear of the police, and an innocent man out to clear his name.

It is a silent film and I have found it takes a certain type of person to really enjoy a silent film. It is much more of a visual medium rather than a multimedia experience of modern film. "The Lodger" does run a little long for a silent movie, I've found the best silent movies run an hour to an hour twenty, but this one goes the feature length distance at an 108 minutes, which will be a tough row to hoe for many--especially those who've never seen a silent film before. But what it lacks in dialogue and soundtrack it makes up for with amazing visuals and some great trick effects. My favorite scene in the movie is when the lodger is pacing about his room and the floor dissolves to a clear plate of glass so the audience and the people below can watch him pace about.

Not for everyone, but I've found that I can really sink my teeth into a good silent movie, and this is one of the greats.

I really like the Shaw Brothers movies that are set in the snow. I can't exactly explain why (trust me, I just spent five minutes here trying to figure it out), but I really like the whole feel of the snowy background in the movie.

Much like "Shadow Whip", there is a great deal of whip action here, complete with removal of heads with it. The ending fight is a doozy: blood, guts, and wagon wheels. You can't go wrong with a movie that manages to kill pretty much everybody you meet in various and inventive ways. The characters are just as wild and inventive as their deaths, especially the guy who sports the helmet with horns who charges like a bull. Top notch Shaw Brothers sword fighting film.

Village Of Eight Gravestones (product link)
Drama / Thriller

Clocking in at nearly three hours, this is probably a bit too top heavy for most audiences. But unlike many three-hour-long movies, this actually makes incredibly good use of the lengthy time and develops a good and complex mystery.

This is another adventure of Kosuke Kindaichi, but it is a little different because you aren't even introduced to him until almost half an hour in, and then you don't know who he is for another twenty minutes. It was a bit like Ian Fleming's "The Spy Who Loved Me". In the book James Bond isn't the main character. Rather it is one of his flings. In this, Kindaichi is leading the investigation but the movie centers around the young heir to the family fortune.

This is very much an old school style mystery movie with hidden family secrets, horrifying sins of the past, and plenty of murders, although probably not enough for a modern audience over a three-hour run time. I really enjoyed it, but this is one of my favorite genres.

Trick 'R Treat (product link)
Horror / Comedy

A truly great Halloween movie, a refreshing taste of real Halloween spirit. A wonderful mingling of several stories taking place at the same time.

I was really impressed by this one, I had been hearing the hype going on for months and whenever I hear hype I immediately take the movie down a grade or two simply because to me hype is always trying compensate for the movie's glaring flaws (this is one of the lingering effects of "Episode 1" to me, the more anticipated a movie the less I know I'll like it, thanks George). But this actually impressed me. It really taps into the fun, mischievous spirit of Halloween. It isn't too gory, too scary, or too violent, because Halloween isn't the Spanish Inquisition (because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!). It is about tricks and pranks and spooky stories, not chainsaw massacres, so in that way I think the movie really finds its vein.

Halloween has always been my holiday, more than Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July, or Earth Day. My holiday has always been Halloween, and a movie that loves the holiday with the same verve and gusto as me will always find its way into my heart. It reminded me a bit of a live action "Nightmare Before Christmas" in that same Halloween reverence and energy. This is a must watch for Halloween fans the world over, and is perfect viewing for Halloween night.

March Or Die (product link)
War / Drama

Very '70s war movie that plays differently than most modern war movies people have seen. It answers the question of where Stephen Sommers got the idea for the opening battle scene in "The Mummy", where the foreign legion fights the Arabs.

This movie is much more about characters than battles, although the final battle in the movie is a very satisfying conclusion. Everyone from Gene Hackman to Ian Holm to Terrance Hill does a very good job breathing life into their characters, making them more than stock war movie characters, and the movie does an excellent job of mixing things up in who gets killed when. I was not expecting certain characters to die when they did, and that kept the movie interesting to me.

It fits into the "Zulu" category of war films, where European nations are questioning their actions in colonization and what it was all for. Not explicitly anti-war as many '70s war movies were, but it isn't a glorification of it either. All in all it is a unique war movie featuring the French Foreign Legion and is worth checking out for fans of '70s cinema and war movies in general.

33-Minute Detective Season 1 (product link)
TV Shows/Movies / Comedy

I really love this series because I have been a long-time fan of murder mysteries from people like the BBC, and this show completely lampoons all of it. Think of it like "Airplane" for the murder mystery set.

If you have any familiarity with the traditional format of murder mysteries, then you'll immediately catch the wave of this show as our hero makes more and more ridiculous accusations as he goes along. The campy parody premise of the show manages to maintain the humor thorough the show and keeps it from getting stale by doing something new and ridiculous each episode. From the clue gathering sequences to the riding in the car, each time they manage to keep it fresh and funny.

If you like murder mysteries (not criminal procedural dramas like "Law And Order", this is more "Sherlock Holmes" than that) and you love sharp parody like "Airplane", then you will love this series.

Zombie Hunter Rika (product link)
Horror / Action/Adventure

Campy, silly, and lots of gore-splashed fun. A solid zombie horror/comedy that has all the required elements of a great zombie movie: lots of zombies, gratuitous nudity, gobs of gore, samurai swords, and nuclear weapons. It reminded me a bit of "Return Of The Living Dead" in that good combination of horror and comedy without one really overpowering the other. Extra points go for having a trio of maids whose only purpose in the movie is to flash their breasts. The movie has that kind of feel to it, so if you want campy zombie fun then you'll enjoy this.

Snatch (product link)
Crime / Comedy

Fun gangster yarn, the quintessential British gangster flick. This is Guy Ritchie at his finest--witty but believable characters who all stand out in this movie, including Brad Pitt as the Gypsy boxing champ. A smart, dense story that, despite the complexity of it all, is still easy to navigate with plenty of hilarious plot twists.

This is by far Ritchie's best film, which is kinda' a shame because probably nothing else he'll ever do will equal up to this fantastic movie. Even if you don't like or understand British movies, slap on the subtitles and give it a whirl because this movie out-Tarantinos Tarantino.

Horror / Thriller

Absolute masterpiece of raw oppressive terror. This movie and its philosophy are dark and bleak, but are both wonderfully scary. The movie is about atmosphere, which the film has to spare. This is a thinking man's horror movie, plenty of interesting ideas (albeit not for those who are feeling down--this is not a happy movie at all) and it sticks with you long after it finishes. This is a movie that needs multiple views to fully appreciate the structure of the film. It is a film I have seen several times and I love it more with each viewing because there is always something new you didn't catch the first time around.

Eko Eko Azarak: The Complete Collection [3-Disc Set] (product link)
Horror / Thriller

I love "Eko Eko Azarak". The first movie really steps up to the plate and belts it out of the park. It is a delightful mixture of haunted Japanese school story, black magic, and gothic scares. The two sequels are a mixed bag that, while they are still fun movies, don't really capture the magic of the first (both have a shocking lack of naked girls and lesbian subplots--for shame). But the first movie alone makes this a box set worth buying.

She-Cop: Shoot The Dirty Rapist (product link)
Erotica / Crime

First off congratulations are in order to the filmmakers for coming up with the grindiest grindhouse title I have seen in years, which includes the movie "Grindhouse". The title should give you a good idea of where this movie is heading--that is down the dark and dirty pervert alley--but once you accept that, you are left with an actually good movie. The characters actually have something going on other than filling time in the movie. I especially liked the main character, the ultimate Dirty Harriet, who is both masculine and feminine and a study in the conflict between the two, in pink movie terms. This is a thought-through pink movie which rather impressed me by going beyond my expectations.
