Bullet In The Head (product link) Action/Adventure / War My favorite John Woo film! The bullet ballet still amazes me till this day. "Bullet In The Head" is an action fanatic's dream, you have everything in this movie: wild guns, explosions, Mexican stand-offs, and John Woo's two-gun trademark. Though with all those action scenes and style, the story is very emotional--you're with these characters even when you leave the movie. "Bullet In The Head" is a great movie!

Not my personal favorite (but high on the list). Certainly Woo's most emotional and dark film. This one grabbed me pretty hard the first time I viewed it. And all-time classic.
many people prefer a Better Tomorrow, The Killer, or Hard Boiled, but this is also my favorite. I could never figure out why it hasn't received a proper release in the U.S.
The Mission [1999] (product link) Bullet Ballet / Crime
Johnnie To's 1999 masterpiece "The Mission" is still vibrant and stylish as if it was released today. I am huge fan of Mr. To's work, his movies are visually impressive and his action pictures are simply amazing. I have seen "The Mission" many times, and with each viewing it still thrills me.
Nai-Hoi Yau, who wrote the screenplay, is very talented. He has written the electrying traid film "Election" for Mr. To. And with this film he makes a simple story, refreshing for the audience. The story is great, about five men hired to protect a traid boss in trouble.
The ensemble cast bounces off the screen, with each character presenting their own litte traits. It was a joy to see a cast so lively, and it shows on screen how each character responds to one another working as a team.
The action was pulse-pounding, with bullets flying everywhere. This being a Johnnie To actioner, he always has this magic of making his cast in a furious action battle so cool. "The Mission" is one of my favorite Johnnie To films. It is stylish but simple and with some twist and turns. It still stands out, looking amazing every time I watch it.
"The Mission" is a 5 star film, and with a Hollywood remake on its way, I hope it also has the vibrant feeling of this one. Because without a great cast working together off- and on-screen, this film would have never worked with its intriguing story and direction.

You're review was spot on. Although I find myself skeptical of most American remakes. The new Bangkok Dangerous looks brutal, and the original was great. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
This was one of the few remaining Jackie Chan films I hadn't yet seen, and after seeing an explosive and exciting trailer for it, I was foaming at the mouth wondering why I hadn't yet. Now that I've seen it, I kinda wish I hadn't.
The trailer promised action--more action than I could shake a chopstick at. This film didn't have any though. It was a long, boring police drama based on a true story (supposedly) of a high profile kidnapping in which Chan plays a relentless cop. It's dialog heavy and the acting is terrible.
On one hand, as a Jackie Chan film, it's easily among his worst, and I can't understand why people like it so much. I've come to expect over-the-top action, stunts and fighting with amazing set pieces from his films. This was a bit of a departure from his other films at the time as he played a darker and more serious realistic character. That doesn't mean it's good. He's played a darker character in other films where it totally works. Here it's just a waste of talent.
As a police drama, it fails as well because the story is cliched and dull. It's also mostly a failure as an action film--until the end, that is, where it earns that extra half a star.
I recommend watching this like a porn: just fast forward through all the talking and watch the action. Basically, skip the first 4/5ths of this movie until you get to the end--and even then, it's barely worth your time. The action and set-pieces scattered throughout were weak for the most part and nothing you haven't seen. It's not until the very end that we finally get to see some classic JC--it's pretty clear which scenes he directed.
Even when things were exploding everywhere and the story had reached its ultimate climax, I was catching myself drifting off and just thinking about how Jackie Chan's hair kept changing length throughout the film, as though they had to do a bunch of reshoots or else they shot it out of sequence. That's probably why it felt so uneven.
Ultimately I'd say skip it, but most people out there seem to think this is some quality genius work. I'm a Jackie Chan enthusiast, but his comedic energy isn't what was missing here--what was missing was a good movie. There's literally nothing worth seeing that they don't show in the trailer. I'd suggest picking up "New Police Story" for a better example of a darker side of Chan, or "Thunderbolt" for some of the most fantastic stunts in a Chan film ever (just try to ignore the actual car racing scenes) instead.
The Magnificent Butcher (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I've watched this film God knows how many times and I never get tired of the film. I think this is Sammo Hung's best film, and the fight choreography is some of the best I have ever seen. I like the comedy in this film too. Great entertainment from the great Yuen Wo Ping.
Pistol Opera (product link) Girls With Guns / Crime Unique and stylish, goes way beyond the typical genre films. It's beautifully shot, playfully directed and manages to combine art and style with humour rather than pretentiousness.
Ten Tigers From Kwangtung (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I really enjoyed this movie. The only letdown is the story. Apart from that, the action is unbelievable and there is lots of it. Good to see Ti Lung and Fu Sheng with the Venoms mob. If you like loads of kung fu and don't care too much about the plot, this is the film for you.

agree with the good kung fu and wished it had a longer run time with better character development like Chang Cheh did with Water Margin
You need to watch real kung fu movies, because the story and martial arts are important in Asian Cinema. Without a good story with the action your missing the point of a true fu film.
Tremendously touching and heart warming tale about a middle aged millionare business man/martial arts expert who falls in love with a country bumpkin that is young enough to be his daughter. Ha! I'm just fucking with you, it's not touching or heart warming. The other creepy and off-puting stuff is true though. Dispite the mushy psuedo-pedophilia undertones of this romantic comedy, it is quite entertaining. But, let's face it, we're here for the fu. It's a shame that Jackie cannot or is just not allowed for some reason to make a decent kung fu movie in America (with the exception of the "Shanghai" movies), but every time he returns to China after a stint here and there he seems to bust out another crowd-pleaser. That is the case here where Jackie returns in top form (or about 85%) and shows he can still dish out the goods.
The real eye catcher of this flick is Brad Allen. He is a member of the Jackie Chan stunt man team and has two stand-out, high quality throwdowns with the Chan-man himself. These battles resonate with the energy and sharpness of the classic Jackie vs. Benny "The Jet" fights.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SLICK AND FAMOUS: There is a dope fight involving Jackie, some guys and bunch of baseball bats. Nice. Brad Allen is still an unknown and it's a shame, because with his clean technique and fierce agility he can probably hang with all the big boys. In the end fight versus Jackie, Brad executes a jumping QUADRUPLE front kick! No strings attached. Seriously.
FINAL WORDS FROM A BASTARD: Ignore the lame love story and get it because you like to see people kick and punch each other. And that is your right. Power to the people! I need more coffee, I'm losin' it over here...

the fight with Brad Allen was good but the rest of the film is subpar
This was a Jackie Chan picture for women and it was a let down. I miss the Jackie Chan pictures that had more action & better heart. I thought Gorgeous was awful with one great fight to offer-its a big let down.
Aside from one or two decent films, Jackie Chan stopped making good movies in the 1970s. This one is no exception, and his aw-shucks demeanor tends to wear. But still, any movie with Shu Qi is worth at least a couple of stars on her presence alone.
Totally agree with your review-This is a great Jackie Chan film and one of my favorite fight scenes Jackie against Benny- The whole love thing is for the ladies but the fights are outstanding.
Returner (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction An awesome futuristic action romp. The visuals and storytelling were compelling from beginning to end. The action was fast and stylish and the effects were mind blowing. A great fun flick!

I thought this was a great sci-fi movie from Japan. Idk what everyone is saying but it was an all right pic.
Cloverfield (product link) Horror / Science Fiction "Cloverfield" is a love it or hate it flick...and I love this film! It's a "Blair Witch"-style movie meeting a "Godzilla" film. The result is a fun thrill ride that would definitely give you a headache with the stylish shaky-cam. There's really not much that you need to know about the plot, just a group of New Yorkers running into a giant monster. If you want a fun flick, check it out!
