Incredible Kung Fu Mission (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Interesting but not John Liu's best. The choreography of some fights is poor (you can see the kick miss by 2 feet...). Overall good but not excellent. Worth watching if you are a Liu's fan.

YI have to say, I was disappointed in this movie after all the hype. You're right, some of the choreography is poorly done.Mad Monkey

Great movie. Wong Tao at his best. Great performance by Tung Wei. Tommy Lee is always good as a villain.

The Heroes [Tai Seng] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Very enjoyable movie to watch. Good fight choreography. Ti Lung is excellent in his role of playing a traitor while in reality he is training the Shaolin prisoners to rebel against the Chings. Shows nice Wing Chun.

Personally, I find that Ti Lung was so much better than his movie partner David Chiang (who does not appear in this movie). Tan Tao Liang is very good in his few appearances doing his usual kicks, although I have seen better performance from him ("The Hot, The Cool and The Vicious", "Showdown At The Cotton Mill", "Flash Legs"). Chan Wei Man plays a good villain.

Invincible Shaolin (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

One of the best Venoms movies! Great action. Beautiful fight choreography. Chang Cheh was at his best directing this movie! A pure delight for all martial arts movie fans. Interesting North vs South plot. What a great performance by Chiang Sheng with the butterfly poles! Very entertaining. And Wang Lung Wei is the best villain of all!

Snake Deadly Act (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Great old school classic. Probably one of the best movies featuring the snake style. Great choreography and very good training scenes. Some interesting acrobatic scenes. Often promoted as an Angela Mao film but she only has a small part in the movie--but she's gracious as always in it! Good performances by Wilson Tong and Philip Ko as well as by Fong Hak Onn. Plot is average at best.

Gang Master (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Chen Kuan Tai is very good here as a bad guy. Actually, I think he fights better when he plays a bad guy! The "hero" displays good techniques but it seems a bit too choreographed some times. I have seen him before but I can’t remember where. The storyline is OK. I was not crazy about the scene with the blue ninjas, but the fights are quite entertaining overall.

Kill The Shogun [1975] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Usually I don’t like Kung Fu movies with rifles. This one is an exception. Hwang Jang Lee plays a very little part in here although the movies is advertised as a HJL movie (false advertising!). Nevertheless, the hero (I don’t know him) is excellent and show's great Taekwon-Do techniques. Very nice kicks and jumping kicks without much wire/trampoline help. Good hand techniques also. I wonder if he starred in other movies (I would love to know!). He looks Korean. His partner also is a very good kicker. The story line about the Japanese general who lost his badge or medal is plain stupid, but it's easy to let go of it. Excellent fights and great action. A bit of comedy (just enough, I don’t like too much!). Very entertaining!

The Inheritor Of Kung Fu [1981] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Ti Lung is good here but only in the second part (basically the grand finale) of the movie (in the beginning he’s more like a clutz with two girls always saving him). The story line is average at best. Decent action. Some good fights, again mostly in the second part, but also many dumb ones. Some flying stuff like Superman...1 or 2 decent weapon fights. The last 15-20 minutes are probably the best part of the movie. The rest under average. Overall certainly not Ti Lung’s best but worth watching once. FF button could be used once or twice though...If not for Ti Lung at the end, probably only a 1½* or 2*.

South Shaolin And North Shaolin (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

That one messes me up! Very good technique demonstrations in training and fight scenes. Good kicking techniques by Casanova Wong. Most of the fights are very good. But I hate ninjas jumping from the ground or flying like bullets!!! Also a lot of accelerated camera techniques are used (where it artificially speed up the film). I hate that also in a movie. Complicated storyline (is there any???????). Overall, just OK.

Shaolin Martial Arts (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Good storyline (old school). Wang Lung Wei (my favorite villain) appears for the first time in this movie. Leung Kar Yan is young and also plays a bad guy. However, there is not enough fight scenes to my taste and most of them a bit too slow. 1-2-3 type of movements. The training scenes are boring. I was expecting much more with such a cast (Wang Lung Wei, Leung Kar Yan, Chi Kuan Chun, Gordon Liu, Alex Fu Sheng, Yuen Siu Tien). That's a superstars cast! It's worth to watch once when you like these actors (and who doesn't?). Secondary actors look like the same crew of HEROES TWO (which I liked way much better).

The Master (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Overall not very good. Cheap comedy. Yuen Wah is OK as Jet Li's teacher (only the fight scenes). Jerry Trimble play's the bad guy. The acting is awful. Jet Li is pitiful in his first fight scene but gets better after. Seriously, the kind of movie that you can skip everything straight to the fight scenes. The training scenes are weird, very weird!. At 2½ stars [out of 5], I am generous...

The Shaolin Drunken Monk (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Quite boring movie! The fights are not very good. One of the worst display I have ever seen of "drunken style" performed by Gordon Liu. He looks so mechanical! Overall, I can't recommend this movie, unless you are an avid fan of Gordon Liu and wish to see all of his movies. You can pass on this one!

Shaolin Challenges Ninja (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

In my view, Gordon Liu's best movie ever. Classic old school story line of Japanese vs. Chinese but done within remarkable class and mutual respect. The fights are very well choreographed and Gordon Liu's shows an excellent arsenal of weapons. The comedy between Liu and his Japanese wife is hilarious (even though she sometimes got on my nerves!). Very entertaining! You cannot go wrong here! Just sit, watch and enjoy!

The Fastest Sword (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Not much action here! The few sword fight scenes are okay but not spectacular. The finale, half of which is in slow motion, is quite boring I must say. Overall, this is more of a mind-philosophy type than action. Okay to watch, but if you're looking for an action martial arts movie, you can skip that one!

Double Double Crosser (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

I gave this movie 3* mainly because I am a Jimmy Wang Yu fan. Otherwise, probably not more than 2½*. I always liked JWY because of his charisma on screen. Not a very good stylist, more of a street fighter (although he is very good with the sword in early Shaw movies in the 1960's). The story line is complicated and boring. Judy Lee is OK at best in the few fights she has (she is way much better and spectacular in One Foot Crane). Lung Fei plays his usual bad guy and gives a poor performance here. The best fighting scenes are when Jimmy Wang Yu fights a group of thugs. The finale between JWY and Chang Yi is alright but nothing too exciting! Many fights are filmed too dark and/or too close. The print is OK but the sound is not very good. You lose the sound sometime for periods of 5 to 30 seconds which is annoying. So my final comment is if you are a JWY fan, you could watch it and enjoy it to some limit. Otherwise, you much better watch JWY in classics like The Chinese Boxer (aka Hammer of God), Beach of the War God, One-Armed Boxer, The Assassin, The Broken Blade and The One-Arm Swordsman, where he is much much better.

Shaolin Challenges Ninja (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This is Gordon Liu's best movie ever. Classic old school Japanese -vs.- Chinese but done more in respect than hate. Some comedy, specially the scenes with Gordon Liu's wife who's a Japanese girl who always try to prove that Japanese martial arts are superior to Chinese's. Many great fights. Overall a very entertaining movie. In my humble view, Shaolin Challenges Ninja is one of the best 10 martial arts movie ever.

Secret Of Tai Chi (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This is a very entertaining movie martial arts wise. AKA Tai Chi Chun. This is true kung fu without wires! Unknown cast to me but believe me they have nothing to envy Jet Li! Many fights. Beautiful choreography with and without weapons. I have seen over 500 martial arts movies and I did not know this one. So I did not expect much from this inexpensive movie, but hell was I surprised! Definitely in my top 20 martial arts movie list. The main guys moved as well as Jet Li and barely used any wire stuff which is much abused in Jet Li's movies. Actually the entire cast was great to watch. Do not hesitate to watch this movie if you love martial arts movies. You won't regret it! Highly recommended. It will be the best few bucks you'll have ever spent!

Bastard Swordsman (product link)
Martial Arts / Swordplay/Sword(s)

That movie is a headache for me. Lots of flying stuff. Some crazy magic stuff and super powers crap...A bit of speed up fights. A crazy technique called the silkworm style that you only really discover at the end (and which is ridiculous that you van only laugh! But overall, I have to admit that the movie is entertaining! There is many good fights with excellent techniques and great swords play. But also many many stupidities. Excellent performance by Tsui Sui Keung. Normally, a movie like this gets a 2* rating or less from me because of the magic, super powers and stupidities. But like I said before, I could not help but being entertained and I did not use the FF button! So I'm giving it 3½* and I do consider myself a tough critic! LOL! To watch with an opened mind though. At one point it's like watching Spiderman with early special effects.....I am not sure if I'll watch the sequel though (Return of the Bastard Swordsman).

The Web Of Death (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Seriously, there's not much to say about this Shaw movie. The only positive thing I can think of are the sets which are quite nice. But the storyline is absurd and the secret weapon is one of the most idiotic thing I have ever seen! Unless you like magic and super powers martial arts movies (I really hate them), you can skip this one with your eyes closed. Total waste of time. A FEW decent fights therefore the 1* rating, or else it would be a BIG 0!

Dual Flying Kicks (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

T.T. Liang shows good kicking techniques here. Not too crazy about the part of his role where he play's some kind of dumb-dumb. Typical Chen Sing as a bad guy (especially at the end). Same for Lung Fei but he does not fight too much here. Too bad because Lung Fei is a pretty good kicker. Tan Tao-Chien (the other "double kicks" of the movie) is pretty good. Actually, he is Tan Tao Liang's young brother. He kicks very similarly (but seems a bit less flexible). I don't think he appeared in any other movies. The sorcerer guy is just plain dumb, specially when he starts chewing at a guy's chest or when he makes a black cap fly... That hurts my rating! The fights are pretty good and plenty enough. There is a scene with bad guys surrounding the "double kicks" by standing on top of mini-platforms held by other guys. That also affects my rating as it was stupid! Overall though the movie is very good. I gave it a 4* because I think it is better than a 3½*. It's in the middle, like a 3.8.

The 7 Commandments Of Kung Fu (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

I always like Lee Yi Min. He's fun and has a nice Chinese style. His training sequences are always the weirdest though...Chang Yi is alright here in a mix of bad/good guy. Good mix of hand and kicks. Lung Fei does his usual stuff. Classic student/master story with a twist: the master is the killer of the student's father. Good fights. Fun to watch.

Duel Of The Ultimate Weapons [PanMedia] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Not Hwang Jang Lee's best movie but very good. Oh, don't get me wrong, he looks good. Very good actually. The problems are his opponents! Nobody outstanding! The fights are very good because of HJL. But he lacks competition here. The kid who beats him at the end is alright (I don't know him) but seriously, not caliber to beat HJL! That's the price to pay when you're the bad guy, someone gotta kill you at the end! I still enjoyed it because of HJL. Great leg techniques and what I love about HJL is that he hardly uses special tools (wires, trampolines, etc..) in his fights. Most of his jumping kicks here are pure Taekwon-Do. Great performance by HJL. With a better cast, this movie could have been a 4½*, even a 5².

The Leg Fighters (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Tan Tao Liang does his usual kicks and is very good as usual. His left leg his quite amazing (the only other lefty that I saw as good or better than him his Bill Wallace, ex-professional PKA middleweight world champion). I loved Hsia Kwan Lee (the girl student). Great legs and man she knows how to used them! Most of he fights are very good although I am usually not crazy about what I call "duo fighters" (2 guys who fight as a team). Again, just enough humor to my taste. Fun movie to watch. The ending could have been better (either it ends that way or maybe a minute or two are missing). Overall it is a very good movie. Another in-between movie. Not really a 4½* but more than a 4*, like a 4.3.

The Clutch Of Power (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Good cast, bad movie. Not much to say. Chessboard is used as a weapon????? Feathers used as a weapon????? An umbrella with no cover (or whatever you call that) is also used as a weapon turning it like wings of a helicopter...Seriously, what the heck was that???? There is a few decent fights. But overall, I could have easily lived without seeing this! Only recommended to strong die hard fans of Leung Kar Yan, Meng Fei & Chen Sing just so that they can say that they watch it! Otherwise, leave this title on the shelf!

Revenge Of The Shaolin Master [PanMedia] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Very average movie of Tan Tao Liang doing his kicks but slower than usual. The first half is not very exciting. The second half is a bit better with Lung Fei and Chen Sing in the final fight. There still many good fights though but nothing to go crazy about. Very weak plot. It's worth watching, once...Not more! TTL has way better movies than this one.

Tower Of Death (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Game of Death's sequel. Overall, dumb and stupid storyline (the ending is stupid, stupid, stupid). There's a lot of good fights though. Hwang Jang Lee is very good here, not great. Did I say stupid storyline? Yes I did. Very hard to rate. I'm probably biased here because of the fights involving Bruce Lee in the original Game of Death. OK, let's try to be positive: it's fun to watch up to an extent. But it will probably take me a few years before I do it again! The kind of movie that you could skip straight to the fights! Movie itself: barely a 2*. The fights: 4*.

Good and bad. Fun and stupid. One of those that I don't know if like or hate. Lots of stars here. But none of which their best movie. Chen Sing shows is usual tiger claw stuff. Does a good job at it. Yueh Hua is himself, he's fun to watch. Always play a noble character. The storyline is typical revenge stuff. Leung Kar Yan has a small role and is OK. It's worth watching I guess. I can't rate it for sure. Maybe 3* is too much...2.8* perhaps?

Not really my kind of movie. Training scene in the kitchen with food and plates and cups.....plain weird. The bad guy's main fighters are a deaf man and a blind man... ridiculous! Not a great movie with Tan Tao Liang. Could have been a great classic Japanese/Chinese rivalry but it's not. TTL is very average in this one. Most fights are very slow (1-2-3 stuff). A few good kicks here and there by TTL but nothing to salvage this movie. The ending is a rip-off of the original Game of Death with fights in a pagoda, with dumb fighters such as big twin Mongolians who can't speak, an axe that flies by itself???? Pathetic! Kam Kong as a badass samurai? Laughable! OK to watch if you are a big fan of Tan Tao Liang.

A lot of action which is always good for a martial arts movie! Good old school movie. Story line is OK. However, although plentiful, many of the fight scenes with weapons are a bit slow, looking too much choreographed. Actually, compared to weapons scenes featuring The Venoms, they are almost pathetic! But overall it is a good martial arts movie and very well worth watching. Should please any KF movie fan.

The Master Strikes Back (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This is the unofficial sequel to THE KUNG FU INSTRUCTOR. Very disappointed with that one. Ti Lung is good as usual but the action is lacking. I hate eunuch princes.....The few fight scenes are very good but not enough action for a kung fu flick. The story drags and too much time is spent in the brothel.... Also, Ti Lung leaving his son in the hand of the bad guy (Chan Wei Man) near the end is not very credible. 3* overall, but would be merely a 2* or 2½* if not for Ti Lung's presence. The fight scenes are 4* caliber but way too few and cannot salvage this movie. THE KUNG FU INSTRUCTOR is so much better!

The Kickboxer (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Sort of a comedy/martial arts mix. Yuen Biao gives a decent performance but too much wire is used (resulting in too much flying) plus too many action scenes are kinda of speed-up. I always found that Yuen Biao was better when he acted as a double (stuntman) with his brother in so many movies. As the main star in his movies, he never was, in my humble view, a great KF superstar, but that's me. Maybe he tried to much to be a comedian. In my view, he should have concentrated more on his "fighting" abilities as he was an excellent kicker. Overall there is enough action in this movie for a kung fu flick but I have seen much better. 3* is a fair rating, maybe 3½* if I'm generous....But if you don't like comedy, this movie is not for you.

Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Excellent! Hsia Kwan Lee is very good. The movie is a little bit slow to start but gets going after about 25 minutes. Good old school classic case of revenge. The fights are very good, some with weapons. My main downside is that Hsia Kwan Lee only starts using her kicks in the last 20-25 minutes of the movie. That's a shame! Overall very entertaining. If I could, I would have given it 4.25 stars.

Bloody Fight [1972] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Old school movie but not very good. Classic Japanese/Chinese rivalry. Some of the weirdest fight "posing" I've ever seen! Over use of the jumping/flying stuff and sometimes it's simply ridiculous. You have to expect flying stuff in most martial arts movies but here it is poorly done. One positive aspect, it was interesting to see Chen Kuan Tai playing the role of a mean Japanese killer. The fights choreography is weak and the styles of kung fu are very so-so. I guess it is alright to watch once, but then it is easily forgotten.

Very entertaining martial arts movie. A must for all Cheng Pei-Pei fans. Actually, we get a double-take of CPP as she plays the roles of mother and daughter. The action is very good. Mostly a swords movie. Plenty of action. Some wiring work but nothing unusual for a Shaw movie of this time. Maybe not as great as COME DRINK WITH ME, but very entertaining. The sets are beautiful! Great performances by CPP, Yueh Hua and Lo Lieh as the villain. Don't hesitate to buy or at least rent this movie. Then sit down, have a popcorn and enjoy the movie.

Excellent movie. Tien Feng (bad guy) uses the whip like he does in the "Shadow Whip" and has a special technique where his whip becomes something like a spear (unrealistic but fun!). Great old-school classic. Good storyline. Lo Lieh, who plays one of his rare role as a good guy, is excellent in this movie. Probably one of his best roles! Great fights, mostly swords and weapons. Bloodshed all over! Very entertaining. And the bad girl (Ling Ling), what a beauty to look at! HAHAHAHA! Usual wiring stuff for Shaw movies of that era (jumping over roofs, etc.). Beautiful sets. Highly recommended. Don't rent it, buy it!
