The Tomie Collection [5-Disc Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller I found Junui Ito's tales about Tomie, a demonic "creature" utterly fascinating! The idea of a monster in the form of a beautiful girl, whose monstrousness is only in her behavior is an interesting concept. I'm sure that everyone has meant someone in their lives that were manipulative and self-absorbed, but Ito's creation takes those character traits to a whole different level! The stories in the series aren't gore-fests, but they're genuinely creepy, a definite and interesting change from Jason, Freddie Kruger, and their ilk. I highly recommend this series to anyone whose tired of the American horror movie retreads that are churned out constantly, or, anyone who still remembers their past experiences with their own Tomies.
Marebito (product link) Horror / Mystery I really enjoyed this film. It was far superior to the usual gory gross-outs that characterize American horror films. It had an intelligent story, fine acting, and the claustrophobic atmosphere and tension was sustained throughout the film. The woman playing the mute girl was stunning. Has she done in other films? Although the scenes of violence were "mild" by American standards, they were truly frightening. For me, the most chilling scene was the closing shot of the woman filming the camera man, smiling enigmatically, while he finally experiences the terror he had been seeking. THIS FILM IS AWESOME!!
Tomie: Forbidden Fruit [5-Disc Set] (product link) Horror / Thriller I've started collecting the Tomie series after I discovered Junji Ito's mangas. So far, this film is the best that I've seen to date. While it isn't clearly based on one of Ito's stories - actually all of the movies are "free" adaptations - I believe it captured the spirit of his stories more than the other films. The story is interesting and has a genuinely creepy feel to it. The actress playing Tomie has the ability to move between whimsical, alluring and menacing in a heartbeat. She was truly unsettling. While the was no nudity or even a hint of sexual activity, many of the scenes were amazing erotically charged, yet tasteful. I heartily recommend Tomie: Forbidden Fruit!"
