Mad Stylist (product link) Thriller / Action/Adventure "Mad stylist" is pretty much "Natural born killers" meets "Dr. Lamb", with a dash of Wong Kar Wai, only not quite as accomplished and appealing as the above mentioned films. Sure, there's gore (although slightly trimmed of its nastier moments), and the film has the visual flair of a colorful acid trip spiced with teenage angst and HK (cat. 3) madness, but it never quite manages to conjure up that flamboyant visual grandeur that is Oliver Stone's film or the greatness of those nasty little Cat. 3 classics we all love! The film is vile, demented and pretty graphic at times though, and it possesses a certain charm despite its obvious plagiarism, so anyone into the more extreme HK cinema would be wise to check this film out.
The Deadly Spawn (product link) Horror / Science Fiction If low budget trash is your cup of tea, look no further! This gore-soaked sci-fi splatter from Ted Bohus and Douglas McKeown is trash with a capital T (good trash in other words!), and a splatter fan's wet dream come true! Forget cozy, friendly, "we come in peace like E.T." PG13 aliens, this is the real stuff: Carnivorous monsters from outer space "invade" poor 'ol earth and munch down on pretty much anything that moves...In blood-curdling and lovingly lingering close-up! Old school miniature effects, cheesy soundtrack, great alien puppets and more gore than you can shake a torn of leg at, make this compulsory viewing for any fan of the genre!
Vampire's Breakfast (product link) Ghost / Comedy "Vampire's Breakfast" is a surprisingly effective HK horror movie with always charismatic "Fatty" Kent Cheng. In a welcome departure from the traditional and formulaic hopping vampire films, the story instead focuses on a bloodsucker more rooted in Western myth and folklore. The result is refreshing and atmospheric, with lots of neon-lit, semi-gothic set pieces, good action and quite a bit of excitement. A somewhat unnecessary love-angel and some slow-paced segments do mar the film somewhat, but this is minor and easily over-looked. Luckily, the film also features its fair share of bloodshed, with a graphic decapitation, melting skin and other assorted fun thrown into an already entertaining mix of horror and cop movie. Gorehounds will rejoice!
The Cat (product link) Science Fiction / Horror Hilarious, over-the-top sci-fi action trash from infamous director Ivan Lai ("Story Of Ricky", "Daughter Of Darkness", etc.). Bizarre, surreal and VERY entertaining, this mind-boggling mixture of THE HIDDEN and THE TERMINATOR comes highly recommended to fans of Asian weirdness.
Blood-splattering slow-mo shoot-outs, explosions, aliens, gore, and a junk yard martial arts battle between a cat and a dog that must be seen to be believed. Yup, this film has it all!
