For A Few Dollars More (product link) Western / Action/Adventure I didn't really "get" "Fistful Of Dollars" when I saw the "Dollars" trilogy at the age of eight or nine (although I came around before long). This is the film that grabbed my attention. While the budget was still quite low, it was a huge improvement over the first film, and there is some improvement in the supporting cast. Gian Maria Volante, so good as Ramon Rojo--the principal villain in "Fistful Of Dollars", is better as El Indio--the principal villain in "For A Few Dollars More". Lee Van Cleef is a very welcome addition as Colonel Mortimer--taciturn and efficient as his character, Angel Eyes, in the succeeding "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly", but a very different kind of man: seeking retribution, not a cashbox.

I would go to a full five on this one! My favourite Leone flick!
Heart Of Dragon (product link) Drama / Martial Arts A change of pace for Sammo Hung (who directed and co-stars) and Jackie Chan, playing a seriously retarded young man and his police officer younger brother, respectively. Sammo is quite good as a good-hearted eternal child who accidentally comes into possession of stolen property; Jackie is excellent as the hard-charging cop who has nearly reached his limit of sacrificing for his retarded older brother. Some people say this film is transparently sentimental, but I like it very well.

i was always impressed with some of sammo & jackie's moments of dramatic acting. i thought sammo was great in spl. it will be intesting to see if their acting talents will blossom further as they age
I like it too but was beginning to be a bit depressed as the film was ending. Sammo played a developmentally disabled adult with sensitivity and innocence..
Tsui Hark creates a wild and wacky world of warriors, wizardry, and more special effects than you can shake a straightsword at. But is all this eye-popping imagery a case of style over substance? Sadly, yes.
Golden Harvest roped in Hark and a bunch of Hollywood effects guys to create this impressive spectacle of a fantasy flick, boasting a great cast and groundbreaking visuals for HK circa 1983. But somewhere between the flying fairies, fireballs, lightsabre duels, and all the other bells and whistles, the story and the characters got lost.
I mean, the actors are fine, and all do a good job--Yuen Biao, Meng Hoi, Moon Lee, etc.--but I feel that they are kinda' pushed into the background by all the special effects stuff, stifling their otherwise fine performances. And the already complicated story drowns in there as well. I've watched this movie a number of times and still have absolutely no idea what it's about. Sure, it keeps throwing crazy, flashy stuff at you, but it doesn't really go anywhere.
For the international version, a whole new plotline, involving Yuen Biao as a modern day fencing champion who goes into a coma and lands in an alternate reality, was shot and tacked on. The original fantasy stuff, being that reality, was recut, and the whole thing was sold as a slightly different movie. The modern day stuff is pretty fun. And I would like to see that full version some day.
I think the movie is a bit of a letdown in the action department as well. It is certainly competent. But I'm just not a big fan of fantastique wire fu. And the fact that there is so much visual effects stuff going on around it also distracts from the physical stuff.
In the end, I can enjoy this film as more of a curiosity than a fully fledged piece of cinema. To me, this is a good example of the dangers of big effects movies: if you lose the story and the characters, then all you are left with is bright lights and big bangs. And that in itself is not filmmaking.

Good points! I liked this film but the acting does get lost in the special effects.
You totally nailed it. I completely agree that this feels like an empty movie that disregards substance in favor of style. It seems that there are quite a lot of mediocre to bad movies that self sustain completely on hype.
I would love to see the full movie. I felt Biao especially was more tied down by wires than enhancement. The plot is as you said is lost. Too much special effects really hurts in this one.
The film is about inner chaos in which is manifesting outer chaos. Or it's about these warriors trying to subdue some Blood Demon. And can't agree cuz technically this wasn't meant to be a kung fu film but a strict fanasty film.
Invincible Pole Fighter (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This is my third favorite Gordon Liu movie. First is "Shaolin Master Killer", second is "Fist Of The White Lotus". The fight scenes and intricate choreography are insane. You are not a serious collector if this one is not in your collection, trust me son!

it's a pure disgrace that you gave this movie four- stars! FIVE BUDDY!
You know, I hate this movie, yet I've seen it 12 times now. What the hell is wrong with me? Just think in 30 years this film will be considered an absurd cult classic of some sort, just like all the shit in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. But for now, it can only be liked by idle-minded pederasts.
This film deserves a tiny fraction of credibility due to one man who died after the making of this bigoted, unethical piece of Nazi trash, and that is Raul Julia. Damn, his superb acting just consummately overshadows this film's abysmal structure of stupidity. Too bad really, his very existence almost makes up for this...this ASS, but it's not enough.
Where "Street Fighter" ('94) ultimately fails is in just about everything, from its horrible action, its ridiculous pacing, suck ass acting (except Raul Julia and, for some weird reason, the Russian guy called Zangief--dude, he was funny), poor and ignorant casting--for example the casting of a Samoan to play a Japanese sumo wrestler (E. Honda is not a Samoan name, f@#$ers)--and so forth. And the list perpetuates until my head explodes.
The success of this film is the chick who played Chun Li. UGH SHE'S HOT! And that's about it.
I hate this movie and yet I continue to watch it over and over again. KILL ME, NOW!!!!!!! :)

All copies and negatives should be destroyed so Raul Julia can rest in peace! As Tigerbloodclaw put it, no stars!
How many ingredients does this how have to be a bomb before the filming ever started. A movie based on a video game and Van Damme is enough for me. Ugh!
This was one of the few remaining Jackie Chan films I hadn't yet seen, and after seeing an explosive and exciting trailer for it, I was foaming at the mouth wondering why I hadn't yet. Now that I've seen it, I kinda wish I hadn't.
The trailer promised action--more action than I could shake a chopstick at. This film didn't have any though. It was a long, boring police drama based on a true story (supposedly) of a high profile kidnapping in which Chan plays a relentless cop. It's dialog heavy and the acting is terrible.
On one hand, as a Jackie Chan film, it's easily among his worst, and I can't understand why people like it so much. I've come to expect over-the-top action, stunts and fighting with amazing set pieces from his films. This was a bit of a departure from his other films at the time as he played a darker and more serious realistic character. That doesn't mean it's good. He's played a darker character in other films where it totally works. Here it's just a waste of talent.
As a police drama, it fails as well because the story is cliched and dull. It's also mostly a failure as an action film--until the end, that is, where it earns that extra half a star.
I recommend watching this like a porn: just fast forward through all the talking and watch the action. Basically, skip the first 4/5ths of this movie until you get to the end--and even then, it's barely worth your time. The action and set-pieces scattered throughout were weak for the most part and nothing you haven't seen. It's not until the very end that we finally get to see some classic JC--it's pretty clear which scenes he directed.
Even when things were exploding everywhere and the story had reached its ultimate climax, I was catching myself drifting off and just thinking about how Jackie Chan's hair kept changing length throughout the film, as though they had to do a bunch of reshoots or else they shot it out of sequence. That's probably why it felt so uneven.
Ultimately I'd say skip it, but most people out there seem to think this is some quality genius work. I'm a Jackie Chan enthusiast, but his comedic energy isn't what was missing here--what was missing was a good movie. There's literally nothing worth seeing that they don't show in the trailer. I'd suggest picking up "New Police Story" for a better example of a darker side of Chan, or "Thunderbolt" for some of the most fantastic stunts in a Chan film ever (just try to ignore the actual car racing scenes) instead.

Excellent film, plot and acting. Just because something is different does not necessarily make it bad. I think you skipped way too much!
"Crime Story" was based on a true story of the kidnapping of Teddy Wang, a Hong Kong multi-billionaire. The film is considered to be fairly accurate, although director Kirk Wong had to make some changes and the police would not release a lot of information on the case. Wong still tried to portray the events as accurately as he could--for example, the location of the kidnapping in the film was very close to the real event. It has also been said that the original ending of the billionaire drowning was likely his real fate, but was changed to a happy ending at the request of his widow, Nina Wang, who owned the cineplexes.
"Crime Story" was also Chan's first film based on a true story and one of his first major dramatic roles. The action was also pretty good as Chan took more of a streetfighting approach and showed no sign of his normal lighthearted sense of humor which is probably why some fans do not like this film. There was a lot of intensity in the fighting and Chan and his stunt team took many nasty falls. The explosions and fires were also well done as the old Kowloon walled city was burned and leveled.
The acting throughout the film was very good as Jackie Chan more than proved he can pull off this type of role. Kent Chang was great as always as police inspector/kidnapper Hung. It was also amazing how actor Law Kar Ying and actress Au-Yeung Pooi San looked like the real Teddy and Nina Wang.
I think this is a good film that allowed Jackie Chan to take on a new and challenging role that could be used as an example to critics who think Chan cannot act or take dramatic roles as he progresses in age.

Superb quality work from Jackie and Kent Cheung! Ashley the world is not black or white. As you go through life you will find a lot of gray. There are times when "the truth" will only kill more people. What little was left out did not change the story.
Jackie Chan and Kent Chang were excellent in this police drama. I agree with you on Chan silencing his critics for this particular dramatic role. Jackie was also good in " The New Police Story"!
The movie was such a disappointment because in order to tell a true story the audience needs a true story of what actually happened. The action in the film was good but the truth of the story should have been told.
The Fearless Hyena Collection [2-Disc Set] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Part 1 is a first-rate bildungsroman-train hard and take revenge story, showing Jackie Chan's genius-level originality and flexibility. Part 2 is an insulting hodgepodge of outtakes compiled by producer-director Lo Wei to cash in on the superstar he had driven away. There's a reason Jackie Chan left these bits out of the first movie: they're not good enough.

5 stars for Fearless Hyena 1. But for the whole collection it's just not worth it if the second film is there.
Lo Wei was pissed Jackie finally left and used everything he could find from Jackies earlier four films. Do yourself a favor and never watch the second side.
Dr. Wai In The Scripture With No Words (product link) Martial Arts / Fantasy This is a fairly uninteresting misfire. Jet Li is miscast as a passive loser of a pulp writer whose stories and fantasies are played out by the mysterious Dr. Wai, his alter ego and fantasy fulfillment--also (of course) played by the much better cast Jet Li. There's not enough story to tell one story, much less two. Jet Li has been in other bad films, but his unfocused performance in this one is more embarrassing than his better turns in even worse films such as "The Master".
Armor Of God 2: Operation Condor (product link) Action/Adventure / Comedy As much as I love the first "Armor Of God", I have to admit I like this one a little more. It takes less time to establish itself, the plot is a lot less loopy, with good, simple Nazi buried gold. Jackie goes to get the gold and beats up baddies along the way. With the signature breezy charm that made Jackie Chan a worldwide star, you can't go wrong with him in his element.

High adventure along with some truly very funny scenes! One of Jackie's best ever!
I like Anthony Anderson: occasionally, now, but not in this heap of garbage.
I like Tom Arnold: never, ever, under any circumstances.
Once again, Joel Silver has taken Jet Li's Beijing-style wushu and forced it down the throats of the American public, interspersed with third-rate hip-hop and tenth-rate writing. Jet Li is marvelous to watch, even in trash: this is trash.

Danny The Dog (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure First rate English language work from Jet Li. He had to wait for French producers filming in Glasgow. He plays a mentally-stunted physical adept working as an enforcer for a vile loan shark (played by Bob Hoskins), isolated from civilization and adult thought until he is drawn into normal life and forced to fight to protect his new family. The action has a real-world immediacy and practicality I have seen in none of Li's previous work, and the quality of his co-stars is much higher than what he has previously endured in the West.

Horrible, self-indugled piece of butt. Completely boring with an incredulous story. The list goes on.
The Fearless Hyena (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Jackie Chan's directorial debut is nearly as good as the just-finished "Drunken Master": an extraordinary showcase of his training and ability, wrapped around a very good story--the creation of "Emotional Kung Fu" through necessity and inspiration. Chan may never again have had such a physically-adept leading man in his self-directions. He was young, phenomenally limber, and extremely innovative in his ideas for action bits.

He he he he ha ha! Slave strikes again! Apparently he does not care for overhyped kung fu films of today 'cause they are ridiculously ludicrous. Oh sure, you could refute me with this unintelligible comment: "A 2 1/2 rating? But the film had great kung fu action." Great kung fu action does not justify a great film. You know it and I know it. Even a mentally handicapped person knows it. This is just another example as to why kung fu films have sucked and that is due to its self-absorbed art film idiocy and uninteresting story about some moron who learns about humility, narcissism, and hypocrisy throughout his existence due to a precarious personality issue and then becomes a Chinese patriot. God!
Maybe it's me--maybe I just get sick of new movies being cranked out the butthole to only reveal the same old shit. The stories and conceptions for today's kung fu films are soooooo worn out that this could have been an unintentional remake of a movie from the 70's or 80's; but who knows, really. To be perfectly honest, I think you're just looking for any excuse to give films like this any credibility when in truth you are in a state of denial.
The kung fu action was okay. JUST OKAY! I'll always have issues with wirework unless it fits with a film's level of insanity and/or absurdity, like "Tai Chi Master" or "Iron Monkey". But with a film like "Fearless" that's supposed to be consistent and well told (HA!), no wirework is required. It does not work. As far as the movements of the actors go, it feels a bit sloppy, but overall it's...eh, nice.
Probably the main reason why I didn't like this film is because of Jet Li. He is just not a convincing bad-ass. His martial art skills are 99% consummate but his screen presence is just weak. He's just a sissy Mary. The only films I've ever liked with him were "Tai Chi Master", "Fist Of Legend", "Martial Arts Of Shaolin", and for some odd reason "My Father Is A Hero". And perhaps "Once Upon A Time In China" 1-3, only because I like Tsui Hark films.
If you liked this film, fine. I don't care. But in the words of a great reviewer: "Nothing special here." It's just another everyday ordinary kung fu movie. Whoopee-do. Now I await your inflictions with elation.
AND THE ACTING WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!

Legendary Weapons Of China (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Seriously one of the best of the Shaw era. Gordon Liu: awesome. Lau Kar Leung: awesome. Hsiao Ho, first time I'd seen him in a movie: awesome. Kara Hui Ying-Hung: awesome.
This was one of those films you'd heard about or seen advertised as a great Shaw production. Then you buy it and realize you're an idiot for not buying it sooner. [The Celestial print] looks great, it has good action and humor, great sets, and a really cool way to learn about all the different weapons used in kung fu.
It's worth every penny and is one of the best when it comes to martial arts films.

The Accidental Spy (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts The film was great. The HK version storyline differs from the English/American version by a lot, with a different substance being trafficked, and with different scenes present to keep the story consistent. But the US version has the whole scene intact.

Valid points, good review..maybe a half star less. Ignore those who have no knowledge of film Asian Wu xia or the world in general.
i can understand how this film got more than 2 stars. There were so many involuntary humorous moments, so much pretense, .... I think Tsui Hark should stick to producing
I am saying no because I do not know which version you are referring to. The international version is a mess, it slaps together with no ease & a lot of confusion. The original cut of the film has a better story telling & the pace is fantastic.
Seven Swords (product link) Martial Arts / Swordplay/Sword(s) Like many of Tsui Hark's films, "The Seven Swords" is epic in scope, dark in emotion and cinematically striking. There are some truly despicable characters in this movie, but they are a large part of what makes it so compelling. Hark really knows how to pit good versus evil (that is certainly a central theme in his martial arts movies). While Donnie Yen is in this movie, he is just one of an ensemble cast that also includes Lau Kar-Leung (long-time Shaw Brothers director, choreographer and actor, and adopted big brother to Gordon Liu).
"Seven Swords" is a masterpiece in the Wuxia genre: the story sucks you in, the acting keeps you in, the visuals make you happy and the action makes you cringe.

This is a WU XUI movie. It is necesssary to use wires! It's ...oh forget it.
Being a warlord amongst your blood brothers is a tough line of business. "The Warlords" is an epic movie, epic in scope, sound, set design and cast. The film is also a remake of a Shaw Brothers classic movie "Blood Brothers". Why remake that? Anyways, "The Warlords" is another epic war/costume flick--I've seen so many of these films, now with "The Warlords" it just looks like all the other war movies we've seen in the past. This film really does not showcase the war, there are only about three action scenes and they were not exciting. You'll also find the sappy emotional war music that we've all heard before. This movie is not about the war, it's about the characters. The cast is simply perfect for this movie, but if you're expecting a violent style action war epic you're in the wrong movie. Watch the flick for the acting, because it's another period piece. But then again we've seen films like this before.

will since you so picky, why don't you make a film like that? we never get enough of jet li, that's the reason we see this film, if you are better than him, why don't you proof it????
The Warlords (product link) Action/Adventure / War I love the stars of "The Warlords". They are very talented and have great charisma. The movie itself is an all right epic tale of warlords. I say "all right" because it has moments that I have seen in better films. I am not saying this film is horrible, but it's been done before. The story is taken from other material, but again the actors were really great in the limited roles they had.

Absolutely must see and purchase to watch again a few times. Great fun.
What's that you say? You like seeing people kicked in the head but you don't own this movie? Sounds like a problem. I'd get on that. It's hard to say something about this flick that hasn't been said before so I'll do my best not to get too cliche or generic. For me this is more of a root for the bad guy kind of flick. Don't get me wrong I love Lau Kar Leung and he was good in it but no matter how much I tried I just didn't like the hero character. He was kind of sad and almost as big a tool as Mike Lee. Kim Won Jin as the bad guy's son steals the damn show with his funky scorpion style and a kicking arsenal that puts almost everyone you have ever seen to shame. I got to level with you I kick like the devil but when I watch Kim Won Jin do his thing it makes me feel like I need to carry my ass back to gym and try a lot harder because that man stands on top of the kicking food chain and we are all gonna need better goodies to keep up. This movie is just plain fun and full of good reasons to enjoy despite minor cheese deposits. I probably would have gave it a slightly higher rating but like I said the main character was kind of a chump. Get it for the bad guy. Collection Status: Mandatory.

Great review - to the point and totally accurate. Not to worry about the kicking I think it's probably partially genetic : )
A precursor to the "Lucky Stars" movies but, contrary to popular belief, not an actual entry in the series, although this was clearly the template for the style of action-comedy that would carry on through the subsequent run of films.
While I admit that the "Lucky Stars" brand of comedy, infantile as it may be, does have its moments, I think a little of it goes a long way. And those movies would be kind of a chore to sit through had it not been for the excellent action scenes. That is not the case with this one. I love the comedy here and find it more or less hilarious from start to finish. Sammo injects so much ingenuity, warmth, and great gags here that even without the action, the movie would still work as a straight comedy.
Sammo and the guys have great chemistry and timing. It is genuinely funny watching this gang of dimwitted misfits goofing around and getting into trouble. They are the perfect ensemble of talents, all with a specific role to play, and bringing their own personal touch to the proceedings. It also helps that they are backed by a truly impressive cast here. It is a veritable "who's who" of HK cinema, circa 1983. It is actually hard to think of anyone who wasn't in this movie.
Admittedly, it has less action and fights than the "Lucky Stars" flicks. But what there is is great and dispersed appropriately throughout the movie. Stuff like the roller-skate chase, the thirty car pile-up, and the warehouse fight just never gets old, which I think you can actually say for the movie as a whole. The comedy, as well as the action, holds up well to this day. A classic of the genre, and just a fun ride all together.
Operation Scorpio (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure I really don't know where to begin with this movie. This was a very well choreographed movie with plenty of action. Minus the wires and super human stunts, this was a very entertaining film. I have to watch this one again because it really blew my mind. There were two styles that were well played (Scorpion and Eel). I loved the Shadowless Kicks and the Hurricane Kicks. There was so much to see and enjoy. This movie is a must-see.

Whatever you want to call it I was half afraid to take a shower for years!! Scary movie!
Mediocre movie that could have been a lot worse if not for a good story buried underneath the family drama and overuse of startling scares rather than atmosphere. Based on the "true" story of a haunting in--where else?--Connecticut that sounds a whole lot like the "Amityville Horror": a family moves into a house with a past and are subjected to intense crazy hauntings and driven out. But here the family took two years to finally leave.
Ultimately this is about as "true" as the "Amityville Horror" is, but who says that doesn't make a good movie? Unfortunately neither this nor the two "Amityville Horror" movies (1979 and 2005 versions) make a good movie. The biggest problem with this movie was its inability to create atmosphere. It tried in some spots, but then screwed it up with the need to inject some startle-scares. Almost the first full hour is more of a Lifetime cancer drama about a crusading mother and her sick boy. But finally, an hour in, the other girl plays Nancy Drew and the movie gets good for a bit before screwing it up with more drama and cheap scares.
Buried underneath the movie's quest for mediocrity and safe scares is a really cool idea--an idea that if they had fleshed it out a bit and shed some of the unnecessary family drama could have made this a really great movie. All in all it's technically competent, cheap, disposable Hollywood Muzak.
I don't watch many horror movies. For no real reason other than I've never really gotten into them and my must-see movie list is already massive. I also can't stand most slasher movies and mindless, gratuitous violence; my aversion to them largely keeps me ignorant of the really good ones of the genre. But like most people, I enjoy a good scare every now and then. So when I get the itch to watch one I like to get it right and reach for the most suspenseful, jump-in-my-seat, check-my-underwear title I can. Aside from one friend who was unfazed by it, I had heard only great things about Ju-on. It was remade in the U.S. as The Grudge, and Americans love their horror flicks, so it has to be pretty scary, I thought. Well... it was a let-down plain and simple. I've never been so thoroughly unmoved. The movie was fine. The acting was all you'd expect, Takashi Shimizu's direction went without a hitch, the edits and music cues were all executed perfectly -- it just didn't SCARE me. I was a little creeped out at parts, and when I went to the bathroom in the middle of it I half-expected to see a little boy peering at me from behind the toilet bowl, but it didn't really do much for me.
I've read this was the scariest Japanese movie ever made, and I'm inclined to believe it is a cultural thing, though not entirely. The most effective horror plays off the human fear of things that could actually happen to you. Make a movie about people being killed in movie theater parking lots, and theatergoers are going to be running to their cars after seeing it. Thus, a film about an evil begrudged spirit is going to resonate with Asian audiences, whose cultures are permeated with animist beliefs -- for the Japanese specifically through their Shinto and Buddhist religions. The fact that it has done so well in the West may prove this is an inate human fear and not just superstition, but the beliefs are so up front and center in Japanese life and day to day ritual that they probably have more than a little to do with the "scariest movie ever" label. The shot of two ghosts staring out from behind a Buddhist altar, trapped in limbo after being savagely ripped from the circle of life, further cements the connection. Playing off cultural fears seems to be why a lot of Asian horror movies involve the supernatural world and restless ghosts, while most American horror involves being hog-tied in the back of a van or being corraled by inbred mountain men.
Cultural pondering aside, this is a horror movie, and it just wants to scare you whoever you are. For me, it failed. I'm actually kind of perplexed as to how this is almost uniformly revered. It's a well done movie, and the little blue boy is sure to be an instantly recognizable image for years to come, but the scares just weren't there. Not even the jumps. Alas, back to the list.

You aren't alone! I was hoping to be scared not bored to death! It is "revered" because it's 'in" now. It is not a cultural thing, it is a very poor excuse for a horror film, no surprises, no scares! Waste of film and time!
Okay, here we go. I guess I had to get around to this eventually. You can't really review HK movies without addressing the Bruce Lee flicks at some point. So I will now attempt to evaluate the man's short filmography to the best of my ability. Not being a big Bruce fan, these reviews will most likely not prove very popular. But at least newcomers (anyone not heard of Bruce Lee?... hmmm) will have the luxury of a more objective viewpoint than that of raving fanboys, foaming at the mouth from blind admiration.
"Big Boss". Okay, first of all, why oh why would you choose to shoot a martial arts movie in Thailand, and not pay homage to, or at least include the native style of, Muay Thai in any way? The Thai badguys just flail their arms about and fall down when Bruce hits them. Chang Cheh shot the Shaw flick "Duel Of Fists" in Thailand that same year, using Muay Thai to great effect, and as part of the storyline. He also made great use of the beautiful Thai locations. This movie could really have been shot anywhere. It wouldn't affect the story one bit.
Bruce has charisma and screen presence up the ying yang. There is no getting around that. He is also a great martial artist. Is he a great screen fighter? Sure. But sadly he is the only one who gets to show his stuff here. It's a one man show. And this self serving approach to fight choreography is my main problem with him and his films. On the other hand, without Bruce, this would just have been another mediocre basher flick, which is evident from the fight scenes done by Hang Ying Chieh. And when you finally see the two men square off in the final showdown, you see an obvious clash of choreo styles, with Bruce, no doubt, coming off the best.
The movie as a whole is a pretty uneven affair. There are numerous instances of flawed logic, poor continuity, choppy editing, sloppy camerawork, and some of the most naive characters you'll ever come across. But these things are nothing that most movies of the genre weren't guilty of at this time. It's just that this movie is held in much higher regard than its contemporaries. And aside from Bruce Lee himself, there isn't really much here that warrants that kind of overhyped adulation. To be honest, I'd take "One Armed Boxer" or "Lady Whirlwind" over this one any day. But hey, that's just me.

I rated this one higher, hey I'm biased! You are correct in your analysis of this one, lo Wei could have really made this a great first film for Bruce, but it is what it is!
Five Deadly Venoms (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Sadly another waste based on a real good idea. Stupid movie without any meaning or significance. Actors need to see 1000 times old time movies and practice a lot.

I think maybe you "need to see 1000 times old time movies"...
Pretty much everything that comes out of anyone's mouth is LOL-worthy, the CGI is total crap, the dialog about Megalodon is literally lifted word for word from Wikipedia, they re-use the same action shots over and over, and Lorenzo Lamas' character completely disappears out of the movie with no explanation.
Tom Yum Goong (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Tony Jaa is by far the most entertaining cinematic martial artist of the present day. Those who were impressed by "Ong-Bak" will be mesmerized by the more innovative fight choreography and hugely superior cinematography of this excellent film.

The plot was a little weak but the top notch action more than made up for it
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Embarrassing admission: I had put off watching this film because there was so much hype, I was just sure it would be a let-down.
Why did I wait? This turned out to be one of the best martial arts movies I've ever seen. Yeah, sure, it's not realistic that this little chick could kick all this ass; but let's call a spade a spade: we don't watch martial arts movies for realism. Uma Thurman got to do it in "Kill Bill", and Jeeja Yanin deserves the same kind of props for the incredibly acrobatic, intricate, and downright dangerous screen fighting she unleashed in "Chocolate".
I know that giving a film 5 stars is a loud statement, and I'm not trying to state that this film is perfect. It's not. Definitely not. But despite its imperfections, the action was just so fun, the choreography so exciting and often unexpected, that I'm willing to err on the side of generosity for this little film that could.
I, for one, can't wait to see more of Jeeja Yanin. If this is just her starting point, I can't imagine what else she could achieve onscreen in the coming years.
While I do agree there was some excellent martial arts action, I don't think this movie deserves anywhere near five stars. And while I am sure the notion of a mental disability necessarily limits the actor, her performance was entirely too one-note .
