Bio: Love the kung fu movies. Donnie Yen,Jackie Chan,Sammo Hung,Jet Li,Brandon Lee,Ti Lung,Gordon Liu. My top movies include Story of Ricky, Magnificent Butcher, Flash Point, Invisible Target, Police Story, Bio Zombie, Drunken Master, Dragons Forever, Rapid Fire, etc.
Here is a movie that got a lot of hype. If you were to judge a movie by it's promises, this would be the best movie around. It promises solid action, a hot young cast, great special effects, and the great Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao together again. Oh yeah, and screen legend Ekin Cheng is plopped on the cover [of some DVD releases].
But let's move past that and discuss what this movie actually does and does not deliver. First the dissapointments. Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao don't even fight each other, and Yuen Biao is pretty much cardboard as a villian with a goofy mask over his face the whole time. Second, the martial arts fights in this movie are completely jacked up by goofy effects and CGI. There is not one good kick ass hand to hand fight in this movie, which, I might add, is called The Avenging Fist. For the most part, the plot clods along with most actors putting in so-so or bad performances. The best performances in this film definitely belong to Sammo Hung, Aunt Wing, and surprisingly, Stephen Fung. As far as plot and action goes, this is no better than the Street Fighter movie crossed with a live action Dragonball Z.
But there are some good stuff. As mentioned before, Sammo Hung does a good job, and Stephen Fung is OK. Also, while the martial arts is bogged down by CGI, the action is not bad. The futuristic city that this film takes place in is cool looking. Also, the love story between Fung and Nova's sister is half believable.
When you boil it down you have to consider this...do you like popcorn movies such as Star Wars or are you a fan of Anime? Are you a teen girl who loves Stephen Fung? Watch it.
This movie, basically, is a couple hours of ok action and eye candy. Not much more. I thought it was in the middle, not crappy but not great. I would give it a shot if I was into popcorny flicks or action. Not too bad.

I found no eye candy or good stuff. This is about as bad as Sammo Hung gets.
The Story of Ricky is one of the coolest movies of all time. It has been hailed as one of the goriest movies of all time. I must say that I really don't think of it as one of the goriest movies ever, but it truly is an awesome viewing experience.
There are many flaws in this movie. The story of Ricky turns out to be not much of a story at all, just an excuse to splatter some poor bastards. The sets are very cheap and generic, the splatter effects are very amateur, and the acting is horrendous.
But this movie makes up for all of this with it's pure fun. The way Ricky disembowels and destroys each of his enemies is a treat to watch. What the film makers lacked in effects they made up for with the sheer creativity of the violence. There are several ways people are disposed of that you've never seen before.
This is one of those strange movies where you can't really explain why you like it so much, you just do. You are just sort of drawn to it. While it was made in 1992, it somehow has that old school charm that movies like Drunken Master and Shaw Bros. give you. You just like it for some reason.
This film has become a cult classic, and rightfully so. The low budget splatter effects, laughable acting and funny situations will win you over. I call this movie a cross between the gore of Bad Taste with a Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris movie. If you are a fan of ultra violent gorehound movies and you don't really need Oscar worthy acting and great sets, then definitely check this one out.
This is simply a movie to sit down and enjoy the blood and guts and dismemberment. It's not Titanic...it's a movie where in the first few minutes a gut gets a two by four nailed to his face, complete with rubbery fake looking effects. That's what you like about this movie if you like it, however. All gorehounds, this one should be on your must have list of ultra violent movies. Well worth a look if you like these kind of flicks, which I myself do. Other similar recommendations: Bio Zombie, Bad Taste, Ichii the Killer( probably the sickest movie ever), Brain Dead, Street Fighter series, Fist of Fury.

I do think of it as one of the goriest movies of all time - not that there's anything wrong with that. The wooden acting and laughable special effects make it not disturbing for one instant - but also make this no more than a ***1/2 film.
Ballistic Kiss was Donnie Yen's personal take on what we call the heroic bloodshed genre. I must say that all in all I was pretty impressed with his effort.
Donnie plays Cat, a secluded assassin who lives a lonely lifestyle. Annie Wu from Jackie Chan's First Strike plays Carrie, a cop who for some reason falls in love with Cat after he kidnaps her.
I will first start out getting the negative things about this movie out of the way. The main thing is the simple logic things. For one, the bullets. There is scarcely any reloading in this movie. I counted about forty bullets being shot from Cat's handgun in the theater shootout before he ever reloaded. That is a stupid thing to knock a movie for, however, and it doesn't detract form the overall film.
Another thing is the bullet wounds. Throughout the course of the movie, Cat and Carrie both get shot about ten times and they don't seem to be too bothered by it. Is it just me or would a gunshot wound to the side of the arm pretty much leave your arm useless? And also the aiming of the bad guys. It is pretty ridiculous how bad they aim. They never can shoot Cat can they? Except for those ten times, of course.
Then you have the main thing that keeps this movie from getting a good four and a half star rating from yours truly. Annie Wu and Donnie Yen's chemistry. Unfortunately there is none to speak. They just conveniently fall for each other when the script calls for it and it isn't very believable. After he threatens to break all of her limbs and mess up her face, I find it hard to believe that she could just fall for him. And is it just me, or does she totally screw him over in the end? She gathers up this army of a police force and goes after him, and then she cries like a baby when (spoiler here) they blow the hell out of him.
Enough of that. All of that negative stuff aside, and I can reveal why ultimately I love this movie. The most obvious reason is the amount of bullets emptied and the quantity of gun fights. Any fan of John Woo bullet fests will be satisfied with what's inside Ballistic Kiss. While it has some slow spots to so called "develop" Cat and Carrie's relationship, there's plenty of shoot em up in here to satisfy action fans.
I also must say that I loved the score to this movie as well as the style of shooting. Donnie Yen has successfully created a very dark and gritty atmosphere that works well with this story. The dreary music and gritty dark colors truly set the mood.
Overall I would definitely recommend this movie. It's got plenty of action and a stylish look and feel to make up for the unrealistic situations and unbelievable love story. Check this one out if you're a fan of movies such as Romancing Bullet, The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, or any Donnie Yen or bullet ballet flick.

I thought this was just a mess: bad plot, too little kung fu, and the kind of gun action made by people who know nothing about guns.
